  1. All around for a baitcaster, 40 braid or 15 mono. For spinning 15-20 braid or 8-10 lb mono.
  2. Never argue with success. Different things work for different folks in all sorts of endeavors. The trick I think is to get enough data points to figure out what works and what doesn't, and ignore what one should be using or how. Sure there are general rules and themes that make sense, but the fool and the sage are often difficult to distinguish, and the difference between the two can be razor thin.
  3. I could stop splishing poppers anytime if I wanted...
  4. Pier pressure (at least around docks)...
  5. Ah, no. vegetable oil will work as a lubricant in a pinch, for non critical low temperature applications, but it oxidizes and breaks down quickly, and will gum up the works. I am a huge fan of (good) olive oil in everything from fresh Mozz, ravioli, salads, and all sorts of yummy things, but not for lubing reels. I have found that Chapstik® (cherry) will work to lube the levelwind in a pinch if its not to cold out.
  6. I've yet to see someone in a pointy wading pool with or without fishing rods with a clue. Paddle (or pedal) away...
  7. Yellow cards. GOLLLLLLLLLL!!!
  8. That shay cray bro...
  9. I'm just jaded, I've been to a bunch of different sporting goods shows on the industry side for almost 30 years, It's sausage making, not the candy store the consumer sees or imagines.
  10. Best in show is much like magazine reviews used to be, all about the advertising and booth size and politics. Didn't Carrot Stik win a while back? meh.
  11. CrappieResource.com?
  12. This ^. Unless one fishes the same bait the same way with only the color being different, there is no evidence that color made a difference. I find action, size and profile to be much more important than color most of the time, but I have seen where color matters, but It's a small percentage of the time.
  13. The algae (and everything else) is just one factor, so it really depends on what else is present, like the bottom composition, contours, weather, water clarity, bait, etc. But generally they will relate to it mid day, and wander about a bit more early and late. If you have small clumps or islands, try those. If you have solid areas, fish parallel, or a frog over it. Small ponds can get totally choked with the stuff, but hey peoples' grass looks awesome. Haven't fished live frogs in a while, but hook it though one lip if you want it to swim towards you, and the inside of one leg close to the body if you want it to swim away from you. Oh, and if you tie one with about a foot of 20 lb mono and secure it to the ground near the shore with a tent stake, you can use a snake for bait in the morning.
  14. In my best Ty Webb voice; "see the goop, embrace the goop, BE... the goop!" Depending on how much and how thick it is, there are various approcahes and lures that I find work best. Sure at some point a frog or weightless ti-rigged plastic become the only options, but I find that a spinnerbait, and popper snaked around the clumps can be effective. The wind will concentrate or disperse it, so stay flexible. I find in a couple of spots, bass will sit under the stuff, and I can pitch to them or run something passed them. Also there is a technique to getting the stuff off your lure and line (and hands, and reel and guides, and everything else) that you just fall into and becomes second nature. It's totally annoying I know, and I would love not to fish around the stuff, but fish seem to like it, so there's that. The last thing is when the shore is covered in it, as it often is this time of year, and you have some open water beyond, reel the lure in quickly to within a few inches of it, then snap the lure up over your head while turning sideways and reeling in the slack. After a while, the lure won't touch the ground behind you, and you'll be ready for the next cast in a fluid motion (unless you hook yoursef of course). Do you do drugs Danny?
  15. I almost always have a t-rigged trick worm at the ready, weigthless and weighted. To me, creatures and craws, I like to drag or hop on the bottom or pitch to cover, worms I'm usually swimming or dragging and dropping.
  16. I see how some (or most) may come to this conclusion, but it's just not so. We see this with striped bass as well. There is nothing "more difficult" about catching larger fish. There are fewer caught because there are fewer around, and to a lesser degree because some (or most) folks knowingly or unknowingly fish for smaller fish and end up catching larger fish as by catch.
  17. I blame public schools...
  18. What shape is the earth? I think both are equally good, but I like the evening better cause I'm not a morning person. I have a couple of spots I can hit mid day with frogs and do ok, but It's no fun in this weather, so I usually wait till later.
  19. Senkos are no longer offered in bulk packs by the manufacturer. TW has a link to products/manufacturers not elligible for the 15% fireworks discount. I know cause I almost pulled the trigger on a Falcon Christie stick, almost.
  20. Oh man, I just realized I've been fishing a spinnerbait in lakes with no spinnerbaits. Should I stock some 1/8 oz ones and hope most survive to 1/2 oz?...
  21. Stop it! We'll have all your beltway buddies coming down here. The winter shows/flea markets do a nice job with pit beef samiches too... The Peruvian chicken in Waldorf (where the Sports Authority used to be) is very good, get lots of green sauce.
  22. Nice! SoMd has a bunch of really good BBQ places. Try T&Js or Randy's next time. There is a newish place on 381 in Brandywine near the firehouse, and a few guys set up roadside on weekends. T
  23. It really depends on what baits you will be fishing. It has nothing to do with topwater. A rod best suited for a popper will bear little resemblance to one for a large spook, buzzbait or (I can't believe you made me say) Plopper, not to mention frogs and toads. So, to answer your question: popper: 6'-6'6" med fast Spook: 6'6" MH fast Buzzbait: 7' MH fast (same rod I fish larger spinnerbaits with) Frogs: 7' MH fast (leaning to extra fast) I want it to have a tip, but lock out no more than 1/3 down the blank. Whopper Plopper: N/A
