  1. Poppers, specially the smaller spitting ones are best with little or no wind. I often go out with a popper and a smallish buzz bait this time of year cause with these fronts and storms it can go from still to choppy in a blink. In another couple of weeks, a lot of my local spots go into strict frog mode.
  2. lack of sales I would imagine. I find I only reach for it and other similarly faced poppers when I'm gurgling or walking side to side, which isn't often. One of the best pieces of fishing advise I ever got was fish fast, or fish slow, didn't get it then, but oh so true. Goes for most lures, most of the time.
  3. Sounds easy don't it? I don't wish sporting goods retailing on my worst enemy...
  4. One of the house brand ones believe it or not. What I find with poppers, just like crank baits, but even more so is that they are all different. Ricos and Yellow Magics are great poppers, but there are different versions of both. They and the Splash-it, along with a few others are copies of the old Michael Popper, which is still one of my favorites. There is a Matzuo (don't laugh) that crushes for me at times, and a few others that have a place and a time. I also have several modified Pop-Rs that are very good. I find that in addition to the lip, the rattle, angle at rest, and the feather trailer can make a huge difference. There are 3 main actions I want to get out of my poppers that usually get it done, and I can alter the wrist action/timing thing to get it from most poppers, but I have the muscle memory of the ones I know best, and that is why I also always throw them with the same setup (well almost always). The reason I don't love the Pop x (or it's big brother) is that they have a more dedicated action that doesn't lend itself to the nuances I want to impart. Don't get me wrong, both great baits.
  5. Even on Wednesdays?....
  6. Yeah, I haven't seen Silver Thread in a while. Did you try their website? I used to use it in spinning gear a while back. Good line, but I didn't see enough difference between it and XL to make a difference.
  7. That's like saying I got rid of my Vette, and got a Ford cause my Vega sucked.(and it did!) The Colt is clearly a price point rod that missed the mark, and not a reflection on the other Dobyn's lines, IMNSHO.
  8. If I'm asking the InterWeb®, my friend is most likely a better fisherman than me. Also it would take maybe 15-30 minutes to use the same InterWeb® to get a good idea as to what a body of water might be like at a particular time of year. But to answer the question as asked: Some weightless t-rig plastic A jig A spinnerbait a drop shot a top water
  9. Good popper, will catch lots of fish, but not my favorite by far.
  10. I'm pretty sure a channel swing is where the channel swings, what are we trying to figure out? Bass and other fish will use contours to travel, stage or reside. a channel, submerged stream, trench or any other such feature is just another contour. How and when fish use it depends on a bunch of different factors.
  11. It's already taxed. The difference is the requirement for retailers to collect it. In theory, buyers are supposed to self report and remit the sales tax on items purchased, where collection did not occur I care. We have to remit sales tax to the city and state on sales quarterly based on sales. If I neglect, forget, or decide otherwise not to collect it, it comes out of my pocket.
  12. A dowel, 9" or so (hard wood with a piece of bicycle tube stretched over it if you've got OCD like me) makes short work of breaking off (or more likely straightening hooks) any size braid. We hang up in 50-200 feet of water in the salt a lot, and cutting line just doesn't make sense. 30 lb and below, I just point the rod and pull (don't blame me if you bend the shaft on your Ultrainum light JDM 5 oz gem. My reels work for a living...
  13. Letting a spinnerbait sink on a semi slack line is killer some days. I had one where I dented the blade on a back cast, and it did something the fish liked a lot on the drop after that. Finally lost it on a snag.
  14. manufacturing tolerances between production runs.
  15. They aren't charging it, they are collecting it. The only folks who charge sales tax is the government.
  16. I run a leader with braid when using treble hook lures, when I need abrasion resistance or tooth guard, when I want to float the lure higher, or want to add a bit of stretch/shock absorption.
  17. The pawl could make knocking, binding noises when casting, but with today's reels tight tolerances, if it's doing that, and has been doing it for a bit, It's most likely time for parts. Tightening the spool to where there is virtually no side play and casting will narrow down the culprit. Once there is no friction from the tension knob, loosening further isn't going decrease braking.
  18. Not a fan of the Colt rods. I think there are many other better options for an entry level rod at the price point. The Fury on the other hand is a a lot of rod for the $, the weird power rating not withstanding.
  19. Most refrigerators are not set low enough to properly keep fish, plus every time you open the door you are letting heat in. Ice is your friend.
  20. I own both a 703 and a 704. Completely agree that the 703 is a Med Mod fast, but disagree that it won't work for t-rigs. I use it for t-rigs, swim jigs and weightless plastics with 12-15 lb mono. What you can't do (successfully) is match it up with heavy wire hooks.
  21. It depends on the type of fish, and how it was kept. If it's put on ice right away, and its not exposed to a rise in temp, it will be ok for 3 days or so. This assumes the fish is in ice the whole time and not just sitting on it. Most fish benefit in quality and taste if kept cold for 12-24 hours. In these same conditions, it will be fine to eat for 3-5 days, but the quality will decline. Bass aren't particularly fragile, they hold up well. Spoilage starts in the belly, so if you are not going to clean them for a while, you might consider just gutting them.
  22. Is that one of the ones where the bodies look a bit like the old Daiwa LPs and has the hidden, no nut, how do I remove this handle set up? I have one. Haven't used it in years. I have other pinnacles that I use daily. The ones they made that were the same as older Trions, BP Clunns, and other house brands, were work horses. The ones with the floating waffle spool, 6 pin cent. brakes are still one of my favorite reels
  23. There are snakeheads and pickerel where I chase bass locally, so they don't last too long. I go through about 6-10 frogs a year, and I mostly throw them July-September. When fishing only bass, They last quite a while, but sometimes they get mangled or the hooks pierce the frog, and they start taking on water.
  24. I have never seen a correlation between hook color and strike ratios. I use a lot of silver and tinned salt water hooks and they catch just as well as any other color. I end up using black nickel and bronze the most.
  25. This is the problem with the whole technique thing. Bass that are aggressively chasing bait will best be targeted by a fast moving bait above them (how far above them will depend on several factors). Bass hunkering down, tight to cover, or in a neutral state will best be targeted by a slow presentation at, or very close to their level, cause they won't move much (if at all) to strike a bait. So the answer is both, but that just scratches the surface.
