  1. I'm from RI and whenever there isnt ice on the lake, and the water temp is under 60 I will cast the trap till my arms fall off for two reasons. One is that if they are gorging on baitfish they will destroy it and two even if they are latharligic, the trap allows you to cover A LOT of water so eventually you will run it by a few fish that will react to it. And as soon as the sun gets up those fish WILL push shallow to warm up. I catch 95% of my fish this time of year in 3 feet of water or less. You can throw a shallow diving crank around stumps, logs, rocks, docks, ect. In a tournament I was fishing around this time last year the h2o temp was 44* and the sun was out. The fish had moved up to about six inches of water, they were just infront of stumps along the bank. You could acctually see their backs out of the water. So dont rule out going shallow this time of year.
  2. Ok jig hits will usually always occur on the drop, swimming back to the boat, or after making contact with cover/structure (wood, rock, post of a dock ect). It can be extremely frustrating to learn because you think everything is a bite and even when you great really good at impact jig fishing you will still set on logs and such. I had the oppurtunity to fish with Tommy Biffle a few years back who has made a living fishing a jig and guess what though you dont see it on TV, pros set the jig into logs and such. It is very hard to fish but once you get confidence, it will be the only lure you want to fish.
  3. -When everyone skips on the last day of classes or the day before April Vacation and they are recovering from hangovers and still sleeping, you are trying to get fish to come up on a buzzbait.
  4. Thats one of my winter ponds too. You can always go there and catch fish. Great little place. Ramp is a little nasty though, had a few bad experiences with that.
  5. Fishing always beats sitting on the couch or just doing nothing. Fish one of two ways, slow down and finesse fish or go for reaction bites using a rat-l-trap, spinnerbait, ect. Also when is the front coming through? Usually from 6 hours after the front goes through until 24 hours after is when fishing usually gets tough, while the front is in the progress is passing fishing can be at its best. Dont always think that just because of the changing conditions fishing will be brutal. My experiences anyway. good luck and stay dry
  6. not about the quality, but about their warranty, heard a few horror stories. Depending on how the river runs, a tin boat or a boat with a jet engine. As for fiberglass, Skeeter, Ranger, Champion, Bass Cat, they are all good. Depends if your looking for stability, speed, storage ect. ect... A LOT about purchasing a boat is the dealership or marina you buy it from.
  7. Ok, blessed it with Low Budget Holy Water and used it most of the time out. Wasn't able to bring any fish in the boat with it but WOW! Put it this way, it is the only rod I will from this point on or unless the Mad Rod Scientist comes out with something even crazier.

2 split rings instead of one allows the trebles to swing a full 360* around so it is much harder for the fish to throw the bait or have the trebles tare in the fishes mouth. Where as 1 = 180* of rotation.
  9. It amazing how the fish can turn off like that. Notice its always after you hit them good and you are expecting them to be as cooperative as they were the day before if not even more. But thats fishing, lol. Any reason why they shut down? cold front...

Remember the usually on see the bottom of a topwater. Clear with rattles is always my favorite. And definatley do what t-rig said about replacing hooks, on the bigger versions put on 2 split rings to connect the body to the hook.
  11. There is a lot of good smallie areas in CT. I have been fishing Pachuag a lot for smallies and have got a few in the 4-5 pound range in the past month. A guy I was fishing with a few weeks back dropped one a few feet from the boat the was all of 6 if not bigger. But there are other great smallmouth fisheries in CT, most tourney's at Candlewood it will take an 8 fish limit of smallies for 25-30+ to win in the spring and fall. Also the Conntecticut River is just amazing. Especially north of Hartford, but it is nasty to run in a boat. The guy that won the Eastern Divisional there used a jet-boat to run north because of how shallow it gets. The Enfield area is supposed to be the best though.
  12. Carrot stix arrived I bought the 6'7" spinning version and I'm amazed how light 3.2 ounces really is. Feels great with one of my Abu Cardinals on it. But the bulldog is affraid of it and just snorts at it... Hope it isnt a bad ***. lol
  13. Bomber fat free. Also know of a guy who has won a couple tourney's on Champlain with big bags of smallies fishing a shallow diving crankbait carolina rigged and fished in 25-30 feet of water.
  14. Rods-Break them on bluefish Reels and Takcle States Youth B.A.S.S. or TBF program.
  15. Posted on: Today at 8:40pm They look super yummy but I think you been watching too much Martha Stewart. Everyone has a little secret thing they do when the ice comes in.
  16. Does anyone know if by burning the line you make it weaker in other spots. Like within a couple inch section up from where it was burned? Always wondered...
  17. Not too much, 40 hp 2-stroke mercury. Spent about $15 a weekend depending if I was fishing electric ponds or no, which is about 4-5 gallons. So probably about 65-75 gallons this year.
  18. Stafford, Watchuag, Wash, and Tiogue have the good smallie populations. Watchaug and Stafford are the best two. Wallum is a fun pond, can be a little tough but average smallie is about 1.75, and is one of the last lakes in RI that will give out a limit of smallies. Beach has some too. Both of these lakes are very clear and can be brutal to fish. Nearby Mass ponds like Wester and South Wattupa have great smallie populations too. Johnsons????? Something I dont know. I didnt think 2 smallies in 5 years counted as a smallie pond. lol
  19. Cutters. Dont like fire around it, just personal preference.

  22. Funny you say that youngbassmaster, I fish a lake that has a river flowing in and it pushes water out onto this 25 acre sand flat with 2-4 feet on it. To the right is a large lily field that you can crush largemouth on, and if you turn around and fish the flat swimming a jig or burning a trap you load the boat with smallies. Hundreds of miles away, same areas, and same results. lol
  23. Rudolph still lives. lol. Hopefully that river wont be freezing anythime soon.
  24. I think you jinxed it lol, 21 unanswered points by the Colts, 23-21. But its starting to rain, Peyton might melt, to used to playing in the RCA dome. ;D
