  1. I’m still battling a bit of a slump, not smart enough to take a break from it. I’ve been wanting to figure out a fairly large local lake, a very popular fishing destination but all new to me. After looking at contour maps I went out one afternoon and graphed over a very long rocky flat/point that falls fairly sharply on 2 sides from 4-5ft. to 15-25ft. with weeds then to much deeper water (eventually to over 90ft). The wind was blowing onto the point so I figured current, weeds, and a drop off it’s got to be good. Plan was to throw my new love Carolina rig and feel it out. I caught a 2.5lb. lmb on my first cast and thought “oh man, I’m learning!”. We all know how that story ends… 🙄 I couldn’t buy another bite so switched gears and just casted along the shore. I found lots of logs in the water so a good area to work. I did catch a couple along there, including a 3#. I tried the lake another day and caught a couple smallmouth on the rocky flat, and saw others cruising. I then tried for largemouth and although I saw some in the very clear water (visibly about 15ft. thanks to the zebra mussels), they wouldn’t bite anything I tried. I was frustrated by those two outings, so went to a different lake another afternoon. I don’t know the lake much better and caught zero for 3 hours in the afternoon heat. I was downright dejected after that. But I dragged myself out of bed at 3:30am to fish a lake I know much better yesterday morning. Only one swipe at my popper so I switched from topwater to a flashy swimmer and caught a decent smallmouth. Then I just picked up a dropshot and eventually caught 1/2 dozen, a couple pike, and another smallmouth and a snakehead on a white spinnerbait. I also fished a frog in some scattered slop with zero bites, so went back to the dropshot for a couple more. So my luck is on the upswing but I’m struggling to catch more than one fish at a time and long breaks between. Hopefully the upswing will continue. I’m wanting to get a friends two young sons out this week, but the fishing has been so slow I’m hesitant to risk it.

  2. That would be wonderful. I bet if some of us reached out to representatives, some would accept and especially if we did it under the banner of Bass Resource. I went fishing alone this evening for three hours. I caught 22, including eight smallmouth in a row. The brown bass were all about the same size. Here's one: Here's a cool pic of the pond: I landed a 19.75-incher: The setting Sun was so pretty it made me ache: This was my last bass. I didn't measure her, but she was a beauty. She had a thick jaw and came into the net with a headful of weeds: I did have one bass hit my lure right beside the canoe. The hit sounded like someone dropped a bowling ball in the water. I had it hooked for a millisecond. Bass are so hard to land on a short line.

  3. I struggled again today. I got 4 Bass in the boat, all spots. One "micro bass" and 3 cookie cutters. I also got a Blue Cat that would have been around 10 pounds. I took my pliers and shook it off next to the boat. I didn't want slime all over my boat. All , including the cat were on a shaky head.

  4. I took our senator fishing for three hours this morning. He sits on Maine's Inland Fisheries and Wildlife committee, so he remarked that it helps him to be reminded of what he's protecting. He'd never caught a bass before this morning, so he was thrilled to catch them and a quick study. He caught them on the surface, on a T-Rigged craw, on a T-Rigged worm, and on an underspin, both trolling and casting. His casting improved throughout the morning and he said he loved hearing me explain why I moved the canoe here and there. He's a terribly busy guy, so I felt honored to have him spend three hours in my canoe. He's also a great guy, both brainy and down-to-earth. Here are a few of his fish. See his smiles!

  5. Yes, bowfin but we use the name snakehead interchangeably up here (I’ve also heard them called dogfish). This one was maybe 4# and did give me an excellent fight - was wishing it was a monster largemouth when it whacked my spinner bait on a weed edge. I do appreciate the input @ol'crickety I know the clear water is an issue on my new nemesis lake, so am re-rigging some stuff - more fluorocarbon and less straight braid. There’s a lot more rock that my usual places so may also try some cranking, which I’ve never done because everywhere else I fish is just weedy enough to make that impossible. I struggle with early morning fishing - I love it, but like my early morning turkey hunts it puts me totally out of sync with the rest of the family. My son and I might try for the evening bite today, but those trips mess up family dinner which is something we value. If I was away from home I’d gladly fish the early morning and late evening, with a quality nap in between. 😊

  6. Allow me to add to the story of this weekends adventures...... Day before yesterday we took @IcatchDinks to our favorite summer lake this year (been great to us this year for some reason) and had a really fun and sweaty 2 hour boat session. We started out hitting some spots that have produced giants but not many bites - and got not many bites 😂 and then moved on to places where we tend to get bit more consistently but the quality is inconsistent. Stuck two on near back to back casts out of the same pocket off of what looked like a bedding area - hard to say if it was the bream or the bass that were on bed - but it was going down back there. Two NICE bass: Sadly it was at the very last second for our guest and we had to take him home right after we found em! Bummer! Then it absolutely dumped rain on all my tackle 😂👍🏼 It needed washing it's fine. WELL - yesterday was quite a epic day to be sure! The Plan : @IcatchDinks + @LrgmouthShad + @Pat Brown + Jake @ sneaky lil spot @ 0500 hours. We arrived and it was still dark - no breeze. Tough conditions but I knew because of the cool rain the previous night - we'd be getting some action. I tied on my black scum frog and went to work. Jake tied on a weightless plastic and went the other direction. He catches one almost instantly and a nice one! First few casts I nail this squeaker who informs me promptly to keep the frog tied on! I obliged and was treated to number 2 very shortly after: The sun starts to come up a bit more so I tie on a little popping trophy scum frog to see what kinda action it gets at this spot. End up with the biggest of the trip with a nice one just shy of 4 lbs. Healthy girl - great fighter. @LrgmouthShad makes his entry and I point him to some areas that have yielded bigger fish and offer him a few strategic points that have helped me at this particular spot and away we go! We are both fishing a grassy point with a big tree hanging over it from opposite sides of the tree on the bank - he's tossing a swim jig and I'm throwing the scum frog popper and he got to see me water ski a nice 2 lber! Always fun when I get an audience - even more fun when it's part of the BR fam! At this point @IcatchDinks sees a flurry of action on a crankbait and catches a nicer one! Jake then manages #2 for the day along the same shade line! At this point we are all sort of on top of each other in the shade as it is getting VERY hot VERY quickly with zero breeze. I bomb my frog parallel to a long PVC pipe that acts as insulation for the feed line for the fountain at the center of the pond. I walk ol scummy pop a couple times and all of us see her take it. I actually got a really nice hookset on her and had her on for a second but she was a jumpe and launched her near 6 lb frame about 3 feet out of the water and returned my bait to me before going on a diet til we leave 😂👍🏼 It was a heartbreaker to be sure. I don't miss a lot of fish at all when they are hooked on the frog but when I do it's humbling and it reminds me to be super thankful for the fish I get to hold and release. The action slowed considerably at this point. @LrgmouthShad kept us in the game with a healthy fish on a megabass pop max (gonna need a couple of those!!!!) @IcatchDinks stuck a nice sunfish and a bass on the crankbait! Jake got one more I think I couldn't find a picture of and I lost a 2 lber in private. 4/6 on the frog is not bad for me and I feel like letting them get that bait established in their mouths is pretty darn good stuff. I missed a lot swinging too soon earlier this spring and I'll be ready next year / this fall 👍🏼😎 The coolest part of meeting these guys and fishing with them is that they're all great people I'd feel comfortable leaving my kid with. They are the salt of the earth and kind and good natured as people can be and we all had such a fun time given the AWFUL conditions for bass fishing! AND we caught the snot out of em!?!?! That's a win. Looking forward to our next adventure - and the next time we get visits from faraway bass friends.

  7. I don't always get these picture sorted by the day, and often I'll fish it several days close, so forgive me if you notice the lighting is off. Sometimes I'll hit this lake a bit before bible study, and then again after. The boy entices them somehow, with is his furious retreives! Learning split shot rigging... Working too.. now just to find the hawgs. I rigged this up for the wife, gave it a test cast and caught this little fighter. I often give her or the boys rig a test cast to make sure things are in order, and often connect. I think this is the first bass I've ever caught on a roostertail. I don't fish inline spinners much. It twisted my line Got my first jig, albeit a swim jig, bass. Yum FF Sonar minnow on a Carolina rig seems to work pretty good. These are red because they were in my catchall bag with a red lure a few days. Worked at the river too! She had a knob on her nose, and another angler there mentioned catching one like that, upon seeing the pictures, he said he'd caught her the other day. Back to the private lake. Where the brim are energetic. Couple days later. Split shotting is working good and I have a good feel for it with a #3 weight and 10lb line. I am going to go to 8lb line and see if I can get the weight down some and still keep my distance reasonable. I don't particularly like these worms, but I have a bag of them. Not sure if this classic color works or is just nostalgic, which is why everyone fishes it. The boy wanted a white grub, this was my test cast. I don't use that suncatcher line for stuff normally. I do have it on a rod that I've been throwing topwaters on, but I just generally don't have any confidence in it. The next day. Watermelon with red flecks is working just fine. Eat anything that don't eat him first is his motto! I was trying this color out... eh... I still don't have much confidence in it. Probably lose it at the river anyways.

  8. I catch an amazing percentage of my bass at the very end of my longest casts. If bass are tucked under heavy cover, you can catch them feet from your boat, but if you're fishing clear, shallow water, as I often do and as @The Baron always does, as he fishes the Canadian Shield, it's best to stay as far from them as your casts allow. I think a lot about bass being here for 3,000,000 years. That's ten times as long as us. So, they've been tweaked and refined for ten times longer than us. They're complex, refined animals, continually moving and constantly wary. Preach it. The senator noted yesterday that I don't park on a spot. I don't even carry an anchor. Heck, I'd be pulling it up two minutes after I'd drop it. FWIW, I had a first yesterday evening. I often see a line in the water as a shallow water bass charges my lure. Well, yesterday, I saw three lines for the first time, i.e. three bass going for my lure. When I reached the spot, the water was sooooooo skinny, but my long cast didn't tip my hand. A couple from yesterday evening. I didn't measure the first one, but the second one was 19.75".

  10. Okay @Pat Brown asked me to take over the report because he’s been very busy since our outing. He has been really gracious to @IcatchDinks, @FishTax, and myself. He’s held no secrets back on where he fishes and how he fishes. Pat is a master of the frog and many other lures! Great guys to hang out with. I had a good time and I hope everyone else has, as well. Unfortunately @FishTax was too busy and could not hang out with us at the time. We fished a small pond together. It’s the same one that you have seen other reports coming from. Really interesting pond. Took me a bit to figure out. But we smashed em! Please correct me if Im wrong. I believe Pat caught 4, I caught 3, @IcatchDinks caught 2, and Pat’s son caught 3. If I’m missing any photos, feel free to add y’all and my mistake. They may take a bit to add into here. Pat also lost a GIANT on a frog that everyone saw him wrenching in. It just somehow got enough wiggle room to get off. I give him a lot of credit for tricking that fish into biting a frog. Thank you @Pat Brown for sharing a little bit of your bass fishing haven and for sending us home with some gifts! He’s a gentleman.

  11. Ouch! I had a very similar experience last year. Fish hit hard and started pulling drag so I assumed it was a striper until it jumped and threw the hooks. One of the most spectacular things I’ve seen. I’d estimate this fish at 45-50 based on two 40s I was able to land the year before. A real heartbreaker but at least I have a memo.

  13. This going to sound unbelievable and I wish it was.....So I went to one of my favorite lakes today and had my mind and heart destroyed. I have only caught one double digit bass in my lifetime and thought I would never see another one, until today. I was fishing a line of weeds when a monster hit my ned rig. I was only in a few feet of water and when this fish didn't jump, I thought I caught a catfish but about 8-10 feet from kayak I could see the head. It was so big I thought I had two fish on there. As it got it closer, it jumped. That's when my mind went blank, I 💩 my pants and I forgot I had a net. All I could think of is don't loose it, keep reeling in. After a few minutes of it running, I got it right next to the kayak and went to lip it. I gently reached down, got one finger on it and snap, my line broke. This monster had gotten my line in the crevice of the rudder handle and just like that, she was gone. I stared at the water in disbelief for about 15 minutes as my new personal best swam away. The mouth on this fish was three times the size of my fist and it was as round as a volleyball. In length, it was easy to measure since it laying on its side on top of the water right next to the kayak. It's tail was at the end of my side rail and the head was just beyond the rudder handle. That's 30 inches. You guys can guess the weight but it's the biggest one I've ever seen in person. I think I need a break from fishing after today.

  14. I used it today with a variety of small baits. A Rebel Wee Craw, an inline spinner I make and a BooYah Pond Magic Spinbait. It was a learning curve though, I am use to grabbing a 7’ or so rod and putting some oomph (technical term) into it and doing my thing. While you can still do that with this rod, the best results came from just slowing down, letting the rod correctly load and being smooth with it. Once I figured that out, it was game on and my casting accuracy came together. By the end of the day, my accuracy and hooking ability with this rod is off the charts. I can’t really say anything negative about this rod. If I had to nit pick, the trigger finger rest could be just a tad bigger but we are really reaching for something here at this point. I caught a bunch of small fish today and going with BFS style presentations puts you into sunny territory so you have to weed through some of them but I also caught a couple of nicer ones today too on the BooYah. While the Booyah is small itself, it keeps the sunnies at bay.

My laptop has a Microsoft feature that searches for coupons, and it found some. bbb10 and thanks. Pretty good deal. GSM also owns GY, Bill Lewis, and a few others if you need just a few things and don't want to reach a minimum threshold to get free shipping.

  18. How would you rank your fishing ability from the shore, in a canoe or kayak with no electronics, and in a bass boat. Out of 10. SHORE: I began as a shore angler and I still fish occasionally from the shore and catch a few with my feet on the ground, so I'd give myself a 5. No, 6 for the half dozen muskies I've caught from the shore. Even with those muskies, I'm no @Pat Brown. Nowhere near. BASIC CANOE/KAYAK: I'm an excellent paddler and love primitive, sneaky fishing, so I'm a 10. BASS BOAT or TRICKED OUT SMALLER MOTORBOAT: I can't operate a trolling motor or any form of sonar. I could start the engine and launch the boat, as I've trailered boats and run outboards, but that's about it. 2 for being able to launch the boat and start the engine.

  19. Since I think the question is more geared towards your ability to get places and fish and fish the area well and not necessarily how many/quality you catch I'm going to answer that way. Shore: 3/10. I did some of it in my youth but I was fortunate enough to always be taken on a boat or have access to a boat. My lack of skill here comes in the research area of where I can hike around a lake legally and getting access to areas you need to do some legwork to find the owner. My knowledge of all the ins and outs of that stuff is just very lacking. For the places I do go on foot I can fish to what I believe its fullest extent. Canoe/Kayak: 5/10. I've done it for a few years and still do it on occasion but I wouldnt say I ever got comfortable doing it. I constantly get pulled into cover fighting a fish, blown past spots too easily, etc. What I am good at is using its advantages and getting into spaces bank anglers and boats cant get and fishing. That and being a lot more quiet helps. Dedicating more time to this and the right equipment I'm sure I could bump this up similar to my boat score. Boat: 8/10. There are few times I catch myself thinking I could have approached a bit of cover better but other than that I know the limitations of my boat and have learned how to attack spots given wind and other conditions well. Some aspects of sonar I could understand better but I can adjust it multiple times a day to the conditions present and get the most out of them I believe I can for now. I'll never give myself a perfect score, always room for improvement. If were talking quantity/quality of fish then its a toss up. I've caught good fish and numbers in every one of those 3 categories. Some days I'll fish from shore quick in the morning and do well expecting the same on the boat to only catch 1 later that day. Others I wouldnt get a nibble from shore and kill em in the boat.

  22. Ok, I knew that. I should have said I prefer this one over the Quantum KVD composite rods I have been killing it with for several years. Quite a bit of it boils down to the longer cork vs that shorter Eva foam handle. My end game is to eventually replace every split grip I have with full cork. Makes me happier. A-Jay

  24. Really hate to hear that, and that puke feeling in the pit of the stomach is hard to deal with when you lose a special fish. Please don't let that fish crush you though, in time you'll see how much of an amazing experience you just had. One that 99.99% of other Bass anglers in Indiana won't have. You got to hook, fight, and witness lightning in a bottle. You'll never forget that fish, she's forever part of your Bass fishing history. Try to take pride in the fact your skill made that experience happen. You got to much awesome JDM fishing tackle to take a break anyways 😉

  33. I wanted to put together the cheapest around $100 rod and reel combos for jigs, worm, punch and frog and another for heavier moving baits like chatterbaits, ploppers, buzzbaits and 6 inch magdrafts ect. I wanted to get as much quality as I could while still only paying cheap pre-built combo reel/rod prices. Those God awful plastic reels on wimpy but heavy cheap rods are a plague in the big box stores. Everyone makes a combo and they are pretty awful compared to what someone with some know how can put together so I wanted to try my hand at it to get some familiarity with the gear to recommend it to newer angers looking at these cheap $80 to $129 combos that I personally find to be rip offs. 2 years later and now I can give my impressions on these two. I don't use them every outing but I rotated them into my normally higher end stuff as a direct replacement for one of the higher end combos and fish it. The jig, worm, frog and punching combo: Rod: This is silver Lews Hank Parker rod with a Piscifun Alloy M. Both can be found for around $53 at times. My rod is the older silver color but the current rods are the same blank. The rod has very stiff and slow loading tip for a MH that gives it a tremendous amount of hook setting power for a MH and fishes like a 7' H flipping stick. I've punched 1 oz tungsten with it with no issues and it is absolutely capable of 1/2 jigs. It's a very light and well balanced rod too. It feels and balances out better in hand than my last gen Tatula Elite 73MH. Its not as versatile or sensitive as the Tatula Elite but it balances out great and feels really good pitching jigs to cover and sticking fish. The low end rating of 1/4 oz is nonsense since it can't even cast a 3/8 oz 5" senko well. It's a stiff rod. If you want to get into jig fishing and want a cheap rod to try it out I recommend this one. Reel: This is the Piscifun Alloy M. It's an aluminum frame compact 32mm spool reel with a lighter weight spool and a long 100+ handle on it. I run no spool tension on my reels and this one is a little fast but still an adequate caster with braid. I didn't like the way it handled unconditioned fluorocarbon line with no spool tension but it's good with braid. I have no problem pitching to cover and then turning around and making a longer cast. It's best attributes are it's compact, good paming shape, long handle and light weight. Heavier bait moving bait combo: Rod: This is the 7 foot MH Lightning Rod. It's an interesting rod. It's pretty powerful and rated only down to 1/2 oz which I believe is accurate. I use it for 3/8 oz and 1/2 oz chatterbaits, buzzbaits, plopper 110, buzzplugs and cullshads with 1/4 oz of nail weights added. This makes it a 1/2 oz to 1 and 1/4 oz bait rod and it's been pretty good. Like the Lews MH it's also a stiffer MH that really isn't an "all around" but compared to the Lews it's softer and able to do treble hook and single hook moving bait work. It think it's a lower modulus or cheaper graphite rod than the Lews but it's pretty forgiving for a powerful graphite rod probably thanks to that cheaper graphite so I'm not complaining. It's not as well balanced or light weight as the Lews but it's a tip down and wind rod so I don't care. I've been using 15# Big Game for line. Reel: this is the last gen 34mm spool Histar Black Mamba. There is a newer one out with a 32mm spool and longer handle that also has an aluminum frame and handle side plate with a double supported pinion. The old reel is still sold along side the new reel with both sometimes being as low as $50. It's a solid reeling aluminum frame reel with an aluminum handle side plate. You can wind in high resistance baits and it doesn't have loss of winding power under load like you get with the cheap plastic frame reels. It's a very solid feeling and nice casting reel. The conical level wind is quite far out in front of the reel giving it a Tatula or Fuego CT like palming shape. The smoothness is average to below average. It was nice out of the box but after 2 years mine has a gritty feeling that I am sure is one of the pinion bearings. Not a big deal if you know how to size bearings, service reels ect. These run as low as $50 on Aliexpress but the Tatula 150 is as low as $100 there as is the 24 Tatula. Both of those are also aluminum frame reels with aluminum handle side plates to put things into perspective. In conclusion both rods are great. If you want a cheap jig and flipping stick then get the Lews HP if you don't mind a 7 foot rod. Forget that it says MH on it. The Alloy M is a decent reel to pair to it for under $60 too. The 7 foot MH Lightning Rod is a good cheap rod for chatterbaits, buzzbaits ect and can even fish 6 inch magdrafts. Maybe it is because I am a reel snob when it comes to moving baits and winding under load but would encourage up moving to a Fuego CT or Tatula. The Histar Black Mamba is functional but not nice enough for me. That's just me because I know people that fish spinnerbaits on plastic Royal Legends with spool tension that would make me vomit after one crank so your mileage may vary.

Last and biggest fish was caught by an isolated clump of weeds kinda hard to see in the picture but it’s about where the trees’ reflections are in the water.

  47. I spent the better part of the afternoon solo fishing a small pond in NC that @FishTaxand @Pat Brownintroduced me to. I caught three nice bass, the largest at 18.5" and the smallest at 17. Two on a single Colorado bladed spinner. The third fish absolutely CHOKED on the crankbait. I finished out the afternoon fishing with Pat Brown and his family. It was a great time, but I didn't catch anything. Right as we got back to the dock the heavens opened up, and I spent a soggy drive back to where I'm staying. 😆
