  1. New PB: 5.8 lbs. Caught on a wacky rigged Senko. Also caught a 4.6 lb'er on a @Siebert Outdoors black/blue chatterbait earlier in the day.

  2. For some reason the t rigged black/blue Dinger bite fell off in the past two days, which is my go-to bait in this particular pond. So I started ripping cranks. 1 of these was on a Livingston squarebill and the others on an H20 Xpress ghost shad lipless. The 3 in the collage ranged from 1.75-2.5. The big girl weighed 5 on the nose, making it my second 5lber this year—so that’s got me pretty stoked. She about got me hung up in the bushes.

  7. Someone needs to tell these poor fish I just lucky catching them on mono on my spinning gear since there's no way I should have been able to feel their light bites in the cold water. Seriously, the whole mono isn't sensitive enough thing is silly. That's all there was for a long time and lots of bass were caught on way less advanced gear than what we have now. You can get a good higher end mono like Sunline Defier Armilio and it will handle as good and probably better than fluoro and if you can tell a difference in sensitivity, you're a better man than I am.

  9. When it comes to selecting colors everyone has their own personal repertoire of confusion! I have seen days/nights where color made absolutely no difference what so ever. Many times I've seen 4-5 boats with 2 anglers per boat, all within casting distance of each other, all throwing Baby Brush Hogs in various colors, & all catching quality/quaintly. I have seen days/nights where color made all the difference in the world. Back in the 70s I set a record for the largest 15 bass sack with a 3/8 oz spinnerbait with a pink/chartreuse skirt & a #5 chartreuse Colorado blade...2 nd & 3 rd place was Larry Nixon & Tommy Martin...we were all in the same cove. I have seen days/nights where I had to constantly change colors to continue getting bit! Colors at night I throw the same colors at night that have been productive during the day. If I'm on a productive pattern that includes a Redbug worm you can bet your sweet bippy that I'll be throwing that worm after the sun sets! I let the bass tell me, hey dummy I don't like that color no mo! Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits ect I feel flash & vibration are more important than color...see the top three comments! That's good start from a dumb Cajun ?

  11. Half the fun of a Ned rig is the accidental catches. My dad and I got out on Monday to chase some walleye and saugeye. Caught a bunch, just no keepers like he was hoping. I was having fun smacking them on spoons though.

  19. Went out with my tournament partner for a fun day of fishing for some post spawn bass. In the last creek arm that we were fishing that day, we saw a big fish on a bed still. We made a few flips, but scared the fish off. We came back 5-10 minutes later and we could see that the fish was back. I stepped up on the front deck next to my buddy and made one flip and a short hop. Boom, fish on! We thought for certain that it was a 7+ pound largemouth based on the size of the shadow we saw...

  21. I got back from the FLW college National Championship on the Red River this Friday, and I was ready to go remember how it felt to catch some fish! I needed one rest day, but Sunday's forecast was rainy with a high chance of topwater. Lake Anna isn't a lake I enjoy fishing at all, I rarely go there besides in the winter, but with the fish being post spawn, and the conditions that I would be fishing, I decided to fish in a Sunday morning tournament that one of the marinas hosts all summer long. Lake Anna in the summer is pretty much a topwater for an hour then go finesse fish on brush piles from what I can figure, and I don't like that. The rain and clouds meant I could throw moving stuff the whole time which I committed to completely, I didn't even have a spinning rod rigged up. Our first stop of the morning after takeoff was at a marina for gas, the one we launched in didn't have ethanol free! After filling up, I put the trolling motor down and started fishing. I put a 2lber in the boat on a super spook within 10 minutes, and got on a pretty good bite for the next half hour, landing 4 decent fish in the 1.5-2.5lb range. They were all on two flat main lake points, which made perfect sense for herring eaters. I fished a couple more similar places after that with no love, so we headed to a creek to fish two pockets that historically have held nice fish this time of year. I always see the bass in these pockets, but can never catch them. I figured the conditions may give us a shot at getting them to eat. On the way into the pocket, we saw a 3lber cruise by that showed no interest in a senko, pretty typical for that spot. I then looked towards the bank and saw a bass lying motionless on the bottom, nosed up to a seawall. I told my buddy Ethan to cast to it, he had a senko in hand already. The fish moved towards the seawall when it heard the senko hit the water, but still didn't know where it was (behind his tail). Ethan twitched the senko a couple of times and the fish spun around, two more twitches and the fish bit. He was a little ugly, but ended up being our 2nd best fish of the day and our 5th fish. I bet most people wouldn't have thought to sight fish in the rain, but you can almost always stumble across a sight fishing opportunity if you are observant! I hooked up on the spook on my very next cast after netting his fish, which was a decent upgrade, putting us at about 10-11lbs. 10 will get a check almost all summer in the Sunday morning tournaments, so at this point we needed to go find a big one. It was 8am and we weighed at 11, so we had a good chunk of time to make it happen. I stuck with the super spook and decided we would stay on the main lake, I knew we could catch a bunch staying in creeks and pockets, but in a 5 hour tournament, you don't want to be looking for upgrades of ounces. Fishing for kicker bites is something I need to improve on in my tournament fishing, so this was good practice for that. From 8:00 to 11:00 I had two bites on the super spook, and hooked one of them. It was almost a 5lber, and was big fish of the tournament! We ended up with 15.15lbs, getting edged out by less than half a pound. It felt great to get back in the groove after a brutal week in Louisiana. Red River gets a 2/10, would NOT recommend!

  22. For some reason it wont let me upload the picture because the file is too big, but anyways i finaly got a normal sized bass im assuming it was like 2 pounds probably a bit more its still not the biggest obviously but a huge step for me from my last two and only two bass i ever caught that were under one pound! Prior to catching this bass about five minutes before i got smoked by another bass that pulled my line way harder than my fish that i actualy landed i was flipping a black and blue jig with same color craw. After that i was so ticked so i just switched to a C-rig and went to another spot like 10 feet away i hooked up an all black worm and dragged it along the bottom and maybe my 3 rd cast i saw the line slacked in a weird manner and i didnt even think i just yanked it and sure enough it was a bass? Thank you guys for answering all of my questions these past few weeks i wouldve never been able to catch this guy if it wasnt for all of your advice i really do appreciate it❤️

  25. Thirty years ago, I had a 10' john boat with a trolling motor and a black and white, 4" depth/fish finder. I was trolling and saw a fish on the screen. At the right distance from that spot I caught a fish. I'm sure it was the fish I saw. That was the last and only fish I've seen on the screen and then caught. I know there are a lot more reasons to have the depth/fish finder. That one I had fastened to a board and c-clamped it to the boat. I used it more ice fishing than any other way. I had a battery that I carried in the boat or on a sled for ice fishing. I was ice fishing one time and watching the screen and saw a school of fish pass through. There were several of us in the same area and I made a comment that I had seen the school go through. One fool asked me which direction they were going. I had the screen positioned, just be chance so it was facing east, the fish went from from my right to left, on the screen, so I simply told him they were going south. He dug a new whole and tried to catch up to them.

  27. Color is important to me, if I don't like it the lure stays in the box. Over the years color has proven to be critical during a tough bite and it's tough where I fish 80% of the time. When it matters it really matters, when it does't everything works. Tom

  30. Is there a reason why your wife accepts the gym excuse over fishing? Going to the gym incurs monthly or yearly fees as well. I don't know your wife or your relationship and I can only make statements from what I know about my own marriage, but I would have to sit down and have a serious dialogue with my wife if I felt that I needed to lie about what I am doing. I don't have to tell you that honesty is pretty important in a relationship. If you lie about one thing and she catches you, you've just damaged her trust that you won't lie about something else far more important.

  35. #1: know your body of water! I've seen some amazing boat operators get totally turned around at night. The problem is not being able to see landmarks. The salutation is learn how to identify landmarks differently. I can recognize camps, marinas, & boat launches by their lighting. Lighting: I use a white light that attaches to the bill of my cap. Yes the white light affects my night vision but only for a minute or so. If I was flying an F22 Raptor I might be concerned but I aint, I'm sitting on the deck chunking a lure! My second light is using when running; a Brinkmann Max Million III Q-Beam Spotlight. Night fishing is one time when I highly suggest having a partner. Navigation at night is easier with one spotting & one driving.

  36. So while searching for a popper rod, I stumbled across some bargain finds that I just couldn't pass up: * Daiwa Zillion 7'4 HRB (Heavy/Mod Fast) * Daiwa Zillion 7'2 MHRB-G (MH/Mod Fast Glass) I'm going to use the 7'4 HRB for throwing horny toads into heavy cover, and large plastic swimbaits like 7" Keitechs. It seems like there's just enough tip, but plenty of backbone for heavy cover. I may even try it for flipping jigs. I am unsure about the 7'2 MHRB-G though. I want to get into crankbaits since I now have a small bass boat, and I will probably have to fish deeper when the full heat of summer gets here. This rod is noticeably heavier than the 7'4 HRB, I weighed them using my fish scale, and the HRB came out to 4.0oz while the MHRB-G came out to 6.5oz. The rod itself is pretty thick, almost like a Mag Heavy blank. I couldn't find much info about the MHRB-G version of the Zillion cranking rod, so I'm not sure if it's a composite rod or full glass rod. It does have a very nice parabolic bend though, it goes from a soft tip and then nothing when it hits the backbone. I may try it out with heavy moving single hook lures, like a 1/2oz Jackhammer first. And I got some Jackhammers that were buy one, get one 50% off at Dicks that I stacked with their 20% off coupon. Edit: Oh yeah, I bought a 6'8 Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Tournament Jerkbait rod to see if it fit the bill as my popper rod. Unfortunately the handle is too long for my liking and the guides feel cheap as dirt. It's going back.

  37. Pretty simple, really. When it comes down to it, a thermocline is just another form of breakline. Find where that breakline intersects good structure near deep water along with breaks ("cover"), and you'll be fishing in a lot of the right areas.

  40. There's really no reason someone should have to upgrade the spool bearings on a new baitcaster. I’ve been fishing baitcasters since the 80's and have never had to “upgrade” a spool bearing, just because. Learn how to properly adjust the reel and the fundamentals of casting with it and you'll get plenty of casting distance.

  42. I don't think it has brought more fishermen to the sport, or even boat buyers, but it sure has brought more fishermen out off the bank. Actually saddens me in a way to see what technology has allowed. It started with GPS and the ability for anyone to just drive by you and push a button, forever marking your spot even though most people had no clue what you were fishing out there. Then came side imaging and hi-def mapping, and suddenly all the people who could never mentally create a 3D picture in their mind to know exactly what the bottom looked like from a 2D screen could now literally see the bottom and everything down there, along with how it all lays out. Stuff that took years and years to find and locate can now be found in a matter of hours. No more triangulation and lineups. No more guess work. Even boat handling has been taken out of the picture thanks to things like spot lock and contour linking between your trolling motor and your depthfinder. It is what it is, and I use it because it's out there, but it's still sad for me to see. And BTW, "get off my lawn!" -

  46. Considering comments above, it’s worth noting that the Boga should never be used to vertically hold or weigh a big pike/muskie you intend to release – these fish are not built to be hung in the air by their lip. If you’re pulling a big one out of the water for a picture, be sure to use your free hand to support the belly. There are temptingly cheap knock-offs out there and they actually work well for helping control and unhook bass with a face full of trebles, but they’re not what you want for a big thrashing musky at the side of your kayak. One key difference is that the boga head can swivel, which is a must when the pike or musky decides to roll like a gator at boatside. The cheap non-swivel versions will torque and tear up the jaw, and not hold as well. A set of jaw-spreaders will also be handy if you're frequently encountering big pike or muskie. You could tether them onto the Kayak somehow.
