  6. This ties in to fishing, I swear. I happen to be a Baseball Dad and a baseball coach to my son and every now and then I look out for giveaways, especially with Wilson Ball Gloves because they occasionally give away $400 baseball gloves. One of the promotions they have is Wilson Wednesdays where you submit a picture. This week they were giving away a custom A2000 special edition All Star Game glove. This is the glove they gave out to MLB All Star players that wear Wilson gloves. Anyway, this afternoon I get a message on Twitter from Wilson. I didn't win the glove but I did win some shirts and All Star swag with the picture below that we took at one of the lagoons that we fish. It's been blazing hot hear lately and other than a few two pounders the other day we haven't caught much so the pic was truly our best catch of the day. Here's the Twitter link from Wilson: https://twitter.com/wilsonballglove/status/885597763437723648

  10. I expect that on a lake with a lot of boat traffic the bass get used to it. Conversely, on a wilderness lake it very well may be the opposite. On Saginaw Bay and Lake St. Clair smallmouth bass often are found (active, too) in the dredged canals that boats use for access to launches. It is not unusual to fish these, getting out of the way of the larger boats as they use the canals, and then go back in to fish. The fish don't seem to mind. I have speculated that the boats may disorient baitfish making them easier prey for the bass. Also, if largemouths were concerned about boats they probably wouldn't hang out under docks. In this case it seems that they get spooked by traffic, but not for long. In a local largemouth lake the usual path for the wakeboat business goes through about 5 feet of water and the weeds are cut down in that path. Like a "road" up and down the lake, with no weeds but a couple significant edges. The edge of that path is a good spot to find largemouths, although I've not caught a big one there. That being said, I think that "unusual" boat traffic would alarm them, like fast motoring in an area where it usually is not done. But I'm not a bass. We will have to find a bass to interview.

  15. Hello bass world, I just installed some new black lights on my boat and wanting to dive into the world of night fishing. I have only been bass fishing for a year but have already accumulated more tackle than I could ever use. I am about to make a run to my local tackle shop. I was wondering what baits and colors are a must have for fishing at night? Also would like any other advice that you all would like to give me about fishing at night because this is all new to me. Thanks!!

  16. @road warrior yesterday I bought some 2/O and 3/O Gammy EWG offset hooks(red) and some Strike King Watermelon Red Black Shim E Sticks. This morning I went to Indian Creek Reservoir in Woodworth, Louisiana. First time I've ever been there. I used my 3/O Gammy EWG and one of the SK Shim E Sticks along with my 6'6" Lew's Carbon MF Speed Stick spinning rod with straight 50lb Power Pro Spectra braid. First cast, reeled up my slack waited 30 secs, drug it about a foot and a half or so. Let it sit for 15 secs and went to drag it again and felt weight(never felt a bite) and started reeling in. I want to thank you for the advice. I now have a new PB! My scale wasn't working right, so I have to guess, but it's at least 2lbs or so. It's twice the size or so of my first two bass that were roughly a lb or so. That technique definitely works. Only caught one today, still a lot more bank areas to fish from out there. Didn't have enough time, with all the people that were there to do much more fishing before it started to rain a little. Thanks again, you're the man!

  18. Very cool. Where is your son playing? My son is only 11 (that's his A1K on the hook) and his goal is to play for the University of South Carolina. Of course, he wants an A2000 or A2K but I've told him he's too young for a $400 "forever glove". The only way he gets one is staying on honor roll from now until high school and making his high school team.

  19. The two best "processes" for eliminating water I've come across in all my years and studies come from Rick Clunn and Buck Perry. Rick's stuff was captured in several sources including Bassmaster and In-Fisherman, among many. The I-F articles done by Paul Prorok, the same person who wrote Bill Murphy's book, are the best. Buck wrote "Spoonplugging," but also has many other articles and material available. Can't go wrong with either system, IMHO. Both will create a permanent foundation of understanding to build upon, something so many seem to lack in this modern era of instant gratification for success.

  20. You can't go wrong with black when fishing ponds, I got a black Jitterbug so scratched that it's almost no longer black to prove my point. Do you need FC ? ...... whatever rocks your boat pal, I fish with nylon and unless somebody scientifically demonstrates me FC is superior to Nylon for that application I see no reason to change.

  21. GrumpyoldPhartte mentioned getting a Lews combo. That is a good idea. If you go on Dicks Sporting Goods website they have a $20 off coupon on orders over $100. There is two Lews combos available. They have a Lews Mach 1 and a Lews Mach 2 combo. The Lews Mach 2 is nicer but is more expensive of course. If you look at a Mach one it comes with a nice 6'10" IM8 graphite rod and a good all metal 9 ball bearing reel. It is available with the handle on the left or right. The price is $129 so if you use their coupon you could get it for $109. They also offer free shipping, however many times you can order it inline and pick it up in store. i would check on these options

  22. Given the time allotted, it is the only knots that joins 2 lines and can be used for terminal tackle. It is easy and strong...when doubled it is a 100% knot....kids prefer black and white and those staying in the sport will pursue others naturally.

  24. Lol, that reminds me of a guide trip I took on KY lake years ago. I won't mention his name, he's a great guide but one morning we were fishing back in a bay on a channel bank. He was explaining why and that he'd never fish the other side of the bay and pointed to a boat that was over there. He had barely finished his words when we all saw the guy set the hook and bring in a nice bass...bigger than what we were on..the guide mumbled something about a secondary channel. Percentage wise, I know the guide was right...but that was funny.

  28. Point Defined: A finger of land that juts out into deeper open water. The most obvious points are main lake and secondary points that originate from the shoreline. Points also occur in conjunction with underwater ridges and humps. Points can also be found jutting out on underwater flats and have no visible area above the waterline. Point Logic: Points create a slope contour that progresses from shallow water to deep but occasionally points will occur in stair-step form; these staggered series of drop-offs create additional structure. Bass relate to points for multiply reasons. Points provide a dining table for feeding acting as natural funnels for staging before, during, and after the spawn. The Best Points: Choose points based on the season; in cold water concentrate on main lake points where bass can find significant depth changes without swimming great distances. In warm water concentrate on secondary points which are points that occur inside the mouth of a cove or bay when bass begin gravitating to shallows via creeks, ditches, and channels. Submerged points are ideal especially during adverse weather conditions. The ideal point has a channel because they provide them a convenient place to feed with deep water access. Points with some form of cover Hydrilla, brush, stumps, gravel, or chunk rock are generally more attractive than bald points. Pointed techniques: Points are the most popular forms of structure because they are easiest to find and can be fished with any lure & technique which makes them the most pressured.

  29. No rod will throw everything. If you are thinking H, I would suggest MH instead. If you are like most and throw a lot of light plastics, a Med is the choice. If your going to be anything more than an occasional fisherman, avoid the ugly stick. Bump your budget by a few cups of coffee and us the search function for rods around 100.00 .......just one person's opinion Al

  30. If you shop around you can get a Black Max and Veritas for a little over $100. There are other options which offer good value and adequate performance. I know its easy to get the idea (not on this site of course ) that it would be nearly impossible to catch bass with anything other than an $800 oufit, but that's just not the case.

  32. If I recall, in one of the Lau videos about bass our big motors do not bother the bass. Trolling motors bother the bass with the large ones taking cover when they hear a trolling motor. Now if there is no wind; the surface water is totally calm; you may want to sneak up on a spot very slowly and quietly so you won't spook the bass holding in the area.

  37. Al Lindner doesn't think so. He was commenting this on a show that was on not too long ago. Guys who troll, drag baits "in the prop wash", just 6 feet or so behind the boat. This is a very effective tactic that we used in Canada on remote lakes that seldom see much boat traffic.

  41. For Famous I would nominate the Rapala Shad Rap and the KVD 1.5. Those seem to universally be supported by everyone! The Wiggle Wart could also be considered for the famous list. Another flavor of the month proposal: Bill Lewis StutterStep. I think spy baits like the Spinbait 80 could make this list also. I don't think its ready to make either list, but I really like fishing my Pompadour Jr. I know they aren't the first of their kind (Heddon Crazy Crawler and Arbogast Jitterbug came before for sure), but they seem to catch fish well The Double Plopper would fall under the "Worst purchases i've ever made" category, in my opinion!

  42. My neighbor has decided to create a wildlife sanctuary in her backyard. I suppose she's trying to bolster the local population of frogs and mosquitoes. The frogs are fine, and actually nice to listen to at night, but the skeeters form vampiric clouds, even during midday, so I decided to do something about it. I thought about buying some goldfish and putting them in there, but if she saw goldfish in there she would know someone dumped them in and might cause a stink. The next best thing? Gambusia (mosquito fish) these guys are native and will eat the crap out of some mosquito larvae. A quick drive to a friend's lake house with net, bucket, and of course a rod in tow, because you can't ever get next to a body of water without at least taking one cast. An hour and a few dozen mosquito fish later, I'm about to leave and take a cast with a swim jig. Reel reel reel pop reel reel pop reel WHAM a short fight and there she is, my personal best large mouth bass at 7 lbs. I wonder if I should thank my neighbor?

  45. No, I don't think it does. Matter of fact in heavy surface vegetation I've seen the bite get better when boats come by and tear it up a little. Bugs and other critters get dislodged and the feed is on. I've had boater's purposely do donuts, back off a little while then come back and we'd tear em up. The bite doesn't last long and doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes it helps. Mike
