  2. Yes there is a BIG differnce between those 2 rods. Typically a top water rod is about 6' 6" and M/F to M/XF and a frog rod is typically 7' 4" or so and is typically H/F to XH/F...

  3. Caught the Muskie burning a spinnerbait over a weed bed. Only had bass net in boat so I had to hand land it. My son caught the bowfin on a wacky worm.

  6. Too much tackle? There's no such thing! If I find I don't use a certain bait much, I'll put it in my surplus cabinet. Or if it looks really cool I'll hang it on the wall with my rods. I've never gotten rid of any baits and I don't think I ever will!

  7. Here's a contour map of the lake this should help a little. No idea what your water temps are right now, but If they're in the mid 50's or lower I'd be looking at the flats closest to deeper water.

  8. Stopped at the pier on the way home last night and decided to put on a Culprit, because of this thread. No bass on any lures, but I did catch a 12 lb blue catfish on a 7.5" original Culprit (motor oil.)

  9. Watch this video on how to setup your transducer. Also, with SI you do not need to run directly over an object. just to the side. Find a known object, mark it with a buoy, move past it with your SI and DI split screen on. Make adjustments to your Sensitivity and Contrast. You may need to change the Palette colors as well. SI and DI are very sensitive to water depth compared to 2D, meaning as water depth changes your setting will need to also. There is no "automatic" setting. Your chart speed must also match the boat speed. SI and DI are usually good up to about 5-6 mph only. Do a search for Doug Vahrenberg and watch his videos or posts on other websites. His info will be extremely helpful to you. The attached chart settings are applicable to Helix as will. I have a & SI and love it for the detail it shows.

  10. Caught my first chatterbait smallmouth today. 15" which is darn good for the Mon River in Morgantown. 2nd biggest I've caught fishing the river several times a week since August.

  11. i purge stuff pretty regularly to be honest. i like to buy and try and then hang on to what i really like or really worked well for me. if it's of enough value to sell, i'll sell it and take that money and put into something else fishing related. if it's of little or no resale value, i'll hang on til i have enough to be impactful and give it away to someone. the old one man's trash is another man's treasure is only amplified when given to a youngster as @Surfcaster mentioned above.

  14. Keep what is most successful for you.. or anything you've had for a long time that's sentimental. I'd get rid of anything that you haven't used in 2 seasons. I'm in a similar situation with hardbaits. They all catch fish though so I haven't let them go. I just keep em in a guide series tackle box and then put inside a tote

  16. Tackle junkie and whitwolf are one and the same. I don't let It bother me that I don't use a lot of the baits I have as I sometimes simply go Into the tackle room and sit, admire, and enjoy what I have worked for. So to me there's really no such thing as too much tackle. That being said If someone needs something I gladly give It away. I have started a tackle box for the grandson and If he continues to want to fish he will, for many years to come, not have to buy anything. Lastly, If you really want to downsize give what you want to away or If you want a high priced item sell what you can to help offset the cost.

  17. Would you use a snap to connect to a jig, a Texas rigged lure ? I see two purposes for a snap. Quick lure change and a connection that allows a bait to obtain it's full action. A snap is not a direct connect and with that, inhibits the transmission of vibration and or lure contact. If snaps were truly beneficial on a spinnerbait, I would think the manufacturer would install it at the manufacture sight. I'm not questioning anyone who uses a snap in the OP's context. I'm just asking where the real benefit is ? If it works for someone, awesome. It's not for me. I'm convinced A well tied knot that is checked and periodically retied is a better practice.

  18. Making a 2 1/2 hour trip when buying a used boat is part of the game. You can't know for sure unless you personally go down there. You could have backed into a super deal. Make sure he has the title in hand prior to leaving. If he can't get it for some strange reason I would pass. If he has the title and there's no lien against it, I would go check it out. I would find a local Merc mechanic that will check the engine over for you if you aren't familar /w it. The XR6 is a great motor but if it's just say unused a lot, the fuel lines, filters, plugs etc probably haven't been changed/replaced and that will cause you issues.

  19. Anything you get rid of will be the perfect bait to use the next time you go fishing. Just remember that. Trust the guy with a room full of baits. Better yet, have your wife gift wrap some of those lures in a box and hide them till Christmas. If you are as senile as I am you won't remember what you gave her or even that you gave them to her. So it will be a great Christmas gift.

  20. I've had many jerkbaits of various brands vary in buoyancy. I've also made my own from floaters. Get water (at the temperature you'll most be be fishing at) in a bucket and test them. You may have to doctor them a bit to get the buoyancy right.

  21. Finally pulled the trigger on the first half of my river smallie set up. Got a St. Croix Legend Elite 7' Light Power Fast Action. Right now going to pair it with a Sahara 1000 until I can get a Ci4 1000 around Christmas. Hoping to put this baby to good use when it comes in next week.

  24. Everyone has their own style of fishing so you are going to get many different answers. With that said I prefer a Medium Action rod for small/medium sized topwater lures and a Heavy Action rod for big topwaters/ frog fishing.

  25. A friend of my father's came fishing in our pond about 40 years ago. I was 7. When he was done fishing, he called me over and went through his tackle box and gave me a lot of his lures. Looking back, it was his unwanted stuff. But a 7 year old did not see it that way. I thought it was great. Keep your unwanted stuff on hand and when you see someone who would appreciate it, give some away.

  26. I've got lures that haven't seen the light of day in 30 years. I know I have a problem, but I don't have to many lures. that's what my therapist tells me. he likes to fish to………………..seriously keep what works for you and some that you want to work on and purge the rest.

  29. That's a tough one ~ and I may not be the best tackle hoarded - I mean angler to offer advice here. I've done it a few times and it's always stuff that I just don't use or have replaced with something else. But if you have any extra Senko's or Knock-off, if you send them to @Darren. I promise you they will get used. Good Luck liquidating. A-Jay

  34. This sounds like user error and it would be hard to convince anybody otherwise. I've used both SI and DI features on Lowrance and Humminbird; Scanned images show up perfectly and are very crisp. You need to get somebody to show you how to use it properly and do some homework via youtube.

  35. I'm gonna need the length, weight, and girth of each of the individuals in the picture to make an accurate estimate. Make sure you weigh them on solid ground, not in the boat. Also please provide the temperature and barometric pressure on the day that this picture was taken.

  42. Revenge Swim Jigs in 1/4oz, orange chameleon has produced best for me this year, followed by a C+C Custom Baits 1/4 in bluegill, both with a Zoom UV Speed Craw trailer.

  43. I would add a couple of color options to go with the sexy shad. I will throw 3 main colors...Black/Blue, Chartreuse/White, and a Bluegill pattern. I also use 3 different soft plastic trailers...curly tail, swimbait, and craw. Lately I have also used a willow blade as a trailer, especially a gold blade on the Chart/White jig to imitate a Golden Shiner.

  44. Check out strike king swinging swim jig. No weed guard, rig the plastic weedless and it comes through almost anything. Also has a different action.

  45. Are you having continued decent luck with the SK jig and looking for more, or is your action falling off with it? If it's the latter I would stick with what has worked and first change up retrieve, then colors, maybe go to a bluegill type color, then consider changing trailers, if you are using any. If you aren't then you should try a curlytail grub or maybe a small swim-bait as a trailer. In my limited swim jig experience it seems like the fish are extremely sensitive to the type of retrieve. If that doesn't do it then it might be that it's time to switch tactics altogether and abondon the swim jig for now. I don't fish a swim jig very often. As far as brand I love D&L jigs. They may or may not be readily available to you. They're local to me but I don't know how widely they're distributed.

  46. For weeds I like the lethal weapon IV swim jig. It comes in a 1/4 ounce you could use. It has a very pointy head that comes through weeds very well. It has a lighter weedgaurd than some so it's sot the best around heavy wood though.
