  1. First fish of the morning. Had been working down a bank with a Rio Rico in bone when she crushed it. Sounded like a toilet flushing, literally. As soon as I was sure she was hooked, I rushed back to turn on the camera. Just in time to grab the net and get her in for this video and a quick glamour shot! Jeff

  2. When my wife and son got home Thursday afternoon last week and I asked what he wanted to do that night, he shouted "Go fishing!" Didn't have to ask me twice. Wife wanted to go to dinner anyways so we went to a city lake in one of the nearby towns. I knew where there were a bunch of bluegills by one of the docks, but man I couldn't get them to bite to save my life. I managed to get him one little palm sized bluegill after I hunted a grasshopper down, and even that was a struggle. We relocated to a rocky point next to a flat where I'm always getting harassed by bluegill while bass fishing. Of course, couldn't get a bite, not a fish to even wiggle the bobber. Son is getting bored, pregnant wife is getting hungry, so I start to just cast the bobber and little jig as far as the little dock demon will cast and let Lake reel it in. Nicole decided next cast was the last one then we'd throw rocks in the water (one of Lake's favorite things to do), and go. I cast it and handed it to Lake who started his uncoordinated 2.5 year old retrieve. I was picking up my stuff when I looked up because Lake stopped reeling, just in time to watch the bobber head down quickly. My wife and I were soon in a chorus of "Reel! Reel buddy!" It was a struggle of epic proportions and I've been less nervous about kickers in a tournament getting off than I was that little bluegill. Finally, the monster lay on the grass and the excited squeals and giggles could be heard across the lake, our son was pretty excited too. Like I taught him last time, Lake lipped his own fish and posed for the camera like a seasoned pro. There will be bigger fish, but that's one I'm sure neither of us will forget.

  6. Got out on the Susquehanna river for some wading. The river is low but that is normal for this time of year. The first smallie I hooked was a nice 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. The 4 others were dinks but fun. The first one came on a Zoom fluke. After that nothing bit for about an hour so I switched to a small spinnerbait with a twin tailed grub on the back. That bait is almost a guarantee to catch fish on the river. Not a big bass bait but good for numbers.

  9. Just for the fun of it, I took some time and looked back at some of the very first posts I ever made on BR. I know many have been on here longer than me, but it's fun to see all that's transpired in the past few years. So do yourself a favor, go back and look at some of your Baby Bass Resource posts and see what kinds of things you were talking about, what questions you were asking, and what techniques and tips you've learned along the way. If you're like me, you're amazed at just how much you've learned. The folks here on BR are knowledgeable, quick to assist, and have a great sense of humor all across the country. We're lucky to have a place like this, moderated by some top-shelf fishermen themselves that have a passion for helping others. I've made some nice friends along the way, and I can truly say I catch more fish because of BR. It's worth a look....

  10. I fished last Friday from 6pm to 2am and only caught 5. So I can't tell where to fish but can tell you where not to go.... Jacks 944 lol. The surface temperature was 3 degrees warmer than on the main lake. The fish I caught were at the mouth of Housen on humps and ridges. All fish were caught on green pumpkin TR worm in 12 to 15 fow.

  11. You've lost 3 froggin fish THIS YEAR and you're complaining? Either you don't frog that much or you are the greatest Froggin Master the world has ever known. I miss at least that many every time I go out and I consider myself a pretty good frogger with about an 80% hookup ratio. Keep on keepin on. I've had days I lost that many frogs..let alone fish

Nick Creme was the first to come up soft plastic worms, before that they were made from rubber. Not sure what ZMan is using, maybe a plastic or elastomer blend? Tom

  14. Looks like the fish are here today, gone tomorrow. Caught 30 or so Friday afternoon on 2 spots and could not get a bite on either Saturday morning or afternoon. Looked around the area and its like they just vanished. the area was full of bait and fish friday but could not even find suspended fish or even bait. I did catch 6 between 2-3 lbs saturday morning shallow but Sat afternoon I struggled to catch 4, and 2 were spots. Packed up and came home Sat night, probably get back at them next week.

  19. I've known that bass eat dragonflies and have figured that a 4" wacky rigged stickbait skipped across the surface of the water is most likely seen as a dragonfly to bass. However, I saw something today that made me realize how these mini-helicopters may be higher up on the largemouth's food choice list than I originally believed. Mid-day, I was passing in front of a dock when I noticed 30 feet or so ahead of me a group of dragonflies zipping low over the surface of the water (we tend to have the most dragonflies here from mid summer to early October). They were about 5 feet from the shore in an area that was about 2 feet deep, an area that was pretty much coverless. Before I reached the end of the dock, I saw something shoot out along the shore and in an instant, a keeper bass was airborne flying through the dragonflies. The bass's jump was dolphin-like, he got alot of air and was definitely keying on the dragonflies. Despite his effort, I think all of the dragonflies escaped by zipping in various directions. The bass cruised back to the shoreline and the dragonflies, as they are wont to do, shot back down to the surface, hovering low over the water. Again in an instant, the bass shot over & catapulted himself through the mini-swarm trying to catch one. I sat back and watched this for about 45 second as the bass made a total of 4 runs at the dragonfly herd and got enough hang time each run to make Dr. J proud. I don't know if he finally caught one or got tired of missing, but he ended up swimming off into deeper water. I never made a cast while this was going on, it was too much fun to watch.

  20. Had a great day out with a veteran, spent a whole week there looking for something that would work, it's been a pretty tough past few tournaments, even the big ones have only yeilded low teens, that information held true for the week I was there, very difficult to find any kind of pattern, only found one small school that was anywhere close to the bottom, the whole week yeilded only seven fish, the biggest one being a 5.5, a striper, and some 1.5 to 2.5, I kept checking in on that little school that I found all week as it grouped tighter and tighter and it ended up paying off, the third overcast day in a row as the tournament got started and we set sail to find the school, by the time we got to it, it had broken up again but were still in an area of about 150 feet and very close to one of the secondary points in the creek. First fish belonged to my warrior, a nice 2-1/2 pounder from a jig he was using then nothing, we decided to go investigate a couple of other spots that had provided a couple of bites, nothing, went back to the same point about an hour later and still couldn't get anything going, I ended up Texas rigging a Senko on a split shot and in that last couple of hours managed a limit. We both lost a decent fish, his at the boat, at least another 2-1/2, mine about 15 yards from the boat with a acrobatic back flip, those two fish would have won the outing for the lad, we finished 6th with an 8.26 bag out of I think 68 boats, not 100 percent certain on that number but I know it was in the higher 60's. Had a great time and very thankful for the things I am learning from the knowledgeable ones on this site, your teachings are not going to waste, very thankful of the service our men and women put forth to protect our freedoms, very thankful of the people who put things like this together on a grand scale and allow us to give back. Here is a pic of us holding our big fish that I had them take with my phone, God bless !!!

  23. your hookups should easily double if you focus on ur mechanics. 1-manage ur line. keep as little slack line as possible on the water surface. also quickly reel 2-3 rotations to remove slack from the equation before hook set. 2-keep ur rod tip down or as low as possible while working the frog. working it high in the air invites problems. the more advanced you get the higher you can keep ur rod. keep it low until you get better. 3-if you see the frog is gone set the hook immediately. do not count 3 seconds . do not wait until you feel the weight of the fish on the line. i had the standard frog hook up issues when i worked my rod at 10-11 o'clock, and counted 3 seconds while reeling up slack. i read a lot of recommendations on here, studied the pros, watched rod/reel technique in videos and made the adjustments above. it made me love frog fishing again

  26. Where is this magical BPS that carries swimbaits?? I've been to several and the closest thing to a swimbait I've seen is one of the BPS jointed swimbaits. A lot of the baits mentioned are hard to get direct from the maker, how is BPS getting them?

  32. Have you ever weighed the baits to see if it's a true 1/8oz? You might be surprised by your findings. Here are some things I regularly throw on my light 2 power casting rod. I have trouble seeing a medium power rod getting any usable distance on a 4g bait. A 4 and 5 inch senko are pretty heavy and isn't difficult to throw with today's gear. Even a weightless trick worm will come in near 6g with a hook. Still plenty doable.

  34. Not that I've been to a lot of places, but of the places I've been SC was the friendliest by far. I loved the diversity there too. Everyone was just another person there, nobody seemed to notice color, gender, any differences, they all smiled and spoke to each other the same regardless. It really confused my wife coming from a place where everyone looks out for themselves and that's about it. Small towns are usually a good bet. Since we moved out of the city, everyone smiles and waves when you pass them on the road, our neighbors look out for each other and help each other when needed, very different from what I've grown use to and I really like it. Of course, the 3 of us make up .01% of the total population (225 people), so you kind of have to play nice with each other. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane,_Kansas

  37. Speaking of that, I left a hotdog pack in my catfishing tackle box a month and a half ago. Didnt go fishing for a while. A few days ago I went to go check to see if I ever did take out the hot dogs. To my surprise, there were these little brown dots on the outside of my blue plano tackle tackle box. I open it up, the most rancid scratch that PUTRID smell I have ever smelled in my life erupted from that small tackle box. I dawn the black grime buster gloves. I prepare for bilogical war. All hands on deck. Now or never. I lift up the trays, the nucleus of the infestation, nay the heart of the evil seeping from that plastic box. I take out the Carolina Links package with one dog missing that I used. Half the hotdogs are turned to a bio-hazard mush of frothing, pulsing, maggot filled decay. I make a grave mistake, I take a whiff. Instant gag, I throw up in my mouth. I put the the dogs back in box. I decide to take the loss on the rapala filet knife and fish grip scale along with some other odds and ends and some lures for bass. Im probably out like 55 bucks. But the death smell, the indescribable putrid smell that permeated everything rendered everything insavlageable. That folks is why you nee to clean out your stuff.

  43. With a lot of anglers using straight braid for jigs, some rod manufacturers have started making rods with slower tapers for techniques normally used with faster tapers. With fluorocarbon or mono you will get line stretch on a hook set so having a rod with a fast or extra fast taper with a lot of backbone helps counter the line stretch. Braid has zero stretch and a big hook set can actually pull a hook out of the fish so having a rod with a little more give helps keep that from happening. For frogs I don't know if I want a mod fast action but jigs or punching with straight braid, it will actually help.

  45. You are currently involved in the sport of fishing. This involves one outfit and catching fish. Most of us started where you are now. The question you pose suggest that you are considering entry into the world of tackle buying. You will never again find the enjoyment you now have if you take the plunge into the world of finding a better rod and reel than what you now have. It becomes never ending and all-consuming. Eventually you wind up with a room full of tackle while spending endless hours on the internet looking for a great deal on a better rod and reel. If you're lucky, occasionally you will find time to fish and evaluate your purchases, but the pure love of fishing will have been replaced by the love of buying better tackle. Embrace the rod and reel that you can't see yourself abandoning, and spend as much time as you can on the water catching fish.
