  1. Went fishing in the rain today, and this bass and catfish decided to fight over my torpedo. First time I've ever doubled up, and definitely my first time seeing a bass and catfish hit the same lure! *Both fish were returned to the water alive and swimming! Has anyone else ever seen this happen?

  3. Funny story...My buddy and I a few years ago were surfcasting for stripers from a beach in Rhode Island. We were into some solid fish for about two hours.....well, HE was into fish.... It was a breezy night with an east wind in Novemeber. It was cold, and bitter, and the surf was up pretty good. He was fishing a large needlefish plug, and he was able to get it out beyond the breaking surf. I had a couple of lighter needles, but I couldn't cast them very well. He was catching fish on almost every cast for just about two hours. He hung up in the rocks and broke it plug off. Now that he lost the magic lure, the bite stopped. He left and walked down the beach a little bit. A few minutes later, I reeled up my plug, and saw his plug hanging off of it. Now I'M into fish! He came walking back when he saw my light on a few times and he noticed I was catching fish. It's the middle of the night, and you can hardly see your hand in front of your face. He saw me catch several big fish, and he wandered over to me asking what I was using. I turned on my light to show him. The look on his face was absolutely priceless!! LOL!!!! He let me continue to use if, but the bite died quickly. I told him I would sell it back to him when we got back to the truck. I teased him a bit about it, and gave it back before we went home.

  4. Today's mail call was pretty good. Some original pre 2000 straight eye pop X's and some limited colors too. '2 not pictured' 4 - RCS 1016 spools will find some homes also. More goodies still waiting to be delivered. Made a small TW order also since it was 15% off. Needed a few things.

  5. My PB largemouth, I wish I had a picture of it. I have a terrible history with phone as a teenager. I caught it bank fishing at the bottom of Watts Bar Dam on lake Chicamauga on a black and blue jig(idk what brand) but it weighed 7lbs on the dot! I cant remember the day but i know it was in june because it was on the new pole my dad got me for my bday. My PB smallie out of Long Lake, WA last summer.I caught it in 33 foot of water at the bottom of a steep rock drop off. It was on a War Eagle 1/2oz heavy finesse jig with a rage tail structure bug as the trailer. I knew it was giant when I set hook and my drag slipped! Battled it for 5 mins to get it close to the boat. When it came to the surface and i saw it jump me and my buddy freaked out, we knew it was a trophy smallie. I end up landing it and put her on the scale. 6.16 on the digital. Hands down one of the best feelings i have ever experienced in my life. Thats what fishing is all about.

  6. I was loaned an Imakatsu Aventa Crawler to try this past weekend and I really gave it a serious try. The bait is huge, 4.5" long and 1.3oz. The closest thing to it is a Pompadour, which is "only", 3" and 3/4oz. I knew there was a shallow spot with several large boulders that the bass ambush shad as they move in and out of the creek. Maybe this fish had missed it's last meal and decided it was going to make sure the next thing that swam by didn't get away, maybe it was just having a bad day, either way it was an awesome strike.

  7. I tried spybaits for the first time this year-- and what do you know, they work! I've been successful with the usual recommendations -- duo spinbait 80, 7' ML spinning, 6lb copolymer line, clear water, long casts, sink to desired depth, straight retrieve S-L-O-W.

  8. March 3, 1993 Lale Castaic. I had taken the week off to fish during pre spawn at lake Castaic. Had a really good Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday the 3rd was forecast for rain and knew it was going to be a good day for a potential world record bass. The crawdad anglers like Crupi were already on the water anchored down on the well known spots in the fish arm, only a few boats on the ski arm where I planned to fishing it was a light rain and light wind. It was around 9 o'clock that I decided to try a spot called the old folks home and already caught 3 good bass earlier had a good idea at what depth and structure these bass were located on. I like to start outside a good spot and work quietly into casting position, no other boats today with so could take my time. The wind had picked up somewhat and was casting cross wind requiring up wind cast from where you want the lure to end up and this also creates some additional slack line. Made the 40 yard cast, picked up the slack line with the rod held low waited for my jig to hit bottom and realized it stopped so I cranked the reel fast and set the hook. The bass came up and jumped completely out of the water, very unusual for giant bass in 18'-20' of water. Because this bass jumped I didn't at first think it was over 12 lbs. The fish came up and made a head shaking jump this time about 50' away and looked over 20 lbs. Now I am talking to myself to calm down, take it easy this could be the fish. After putting the giant bass in the boat she weighed on my scale close to 20 lbs. Filled the livewell, put the bass in and went to the marina to get a formal weight. The marina didn't have a certified scale! Put the boat on the trailer and drove to the mini mart, who did have a certified scale and weighed the bass at 19.3 lbs and disappointed it wasn't over 20. Drove back to the marina and released the bass. Never caught my 20 and looking back very fortunate to catch the 19.3 lbs PB Black/purple/brown hair 7/16 oz jig with barn red custom Super Pork 4" trailer, 12# Big Game, custom Lamiglas rod, Diawa TD 103HA reel. 9. Although Definitely not an actual word, I do believe this slang term SLAUNCH was first coined by Mark Zona (that's who I stole it from) & used to describe any rather Oversized Bass. I'm not certain if it's a combination of Slob & perhaps Staunch. Either way I think it sounds funny. Bass anglers have a number somewhat bizarre and often kind of off the wall names for Big Bass; besides pig, hoss, & fatty there's . . . beast, brute, monster sucker, giant, dandy sow cow moose, toad, mule whopper Sasquatch or Basssquatch chunk, chub, slob big nasty slaunch donkey (credited multiple times to Mark Zona) Godzilla, water zilla, hogzilla or Basszilla butterball football bucketmouth Rumpletoadskin (by Sv Rider) Hog Molly biggun' girl names: Nadine, Bertha, Mona, Jezebel boy names: Bubba, Tyrone, Ned big mama or big papa Frankenstein swamp donkey swamp gator grass monster Big Mac wildebeest Big Mama Jama hippopotobass slobber knocker chunky monkey pole bender behemoth hydrilla gorilla Jolly Green Giant Toad Choker humdinger Slabber Jabber Granddaddy whale log donkey moss monkey tank, truck, hemi Loch Ness Monster swamp jockey stump knocker hammer, bruiser, beefcake Boom Boom Pow heart attack wooly monster stud game changer freak neasty Donkey Kong Yeti T-Rex, Donkeysaurus Rex, Slobosaurus Rex, pteradactyl Shamu A-Jay

  10. Took my hero out in the Old Town this morning. Today was the last day of fishing for this year on our favorite 'Paddle Only" lake. Weather was nice for this last day of August, a mix of sun & clouds with a pleasant fish catching breeze.. Going on the First & Last day of the of the very short 10 week fishing season at this secluded little lake has been a tradition of ours for the past several years. Making memories & Good Times and today a 6 pound bass, Biggest we've ever caught here. We'll remember this one all winter. Here's some video we managed to get - it's a little rough but captures the memory well. A-Jay

  13. #1: Understand what structure is, how to truly identify it, interpret it, and then fish it effectively. #2: Understand what the predominate prey species in your lake is and how that species relates to structure with each passing season...morning, noon, and night. With those two I can confidentially fish anybody of water. One should always fish to their strengths!

  14. It's good that you want to learn "right away" - a positive attitude can be helpful, but I'd recommend that you keep reasonable expectations. Otherwise you may become a victim of your own enthusiasm. Learning to cast & fish with a revolving spool reel takes some time & it's different for everyone. I've watched Glenn's videos on YouTube as well as the good ones here on BR http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/rods-reels-videos, they all offer solid info that if followed will help you learn. Best advise I can offer is to perfect how to cast smoothly, don't get concerned so much about distance. That will come as you become proficient. Use 15 mono - something inexpensive and enjoy the process. A-Jay

  18. My little brother drove to Morgantown this weekend to visit (fish) and our goal was to get his first musky. I took him to my spot yesterday evening and this morning, a couple follows but no dice. Today we were fishing a pile of laydowns and he sets the hook on what we thought was a catfish.....the fish jumped and chaos ensued! 12lb mono and a sk bitsy flip with a zoom ultra vibe speed craw!

  20. Multiple cast to a single target is always a wise decision! I fish a lot of "Team" tournaments, that's 2 angles fishing for a single 5 bass limit. We fish together as a team not as two individuals out fishing When one catches a bass the other should immediately fire a follow up cast to the same spot. When done in unison both anglers can cover water quickly & thoroughly, which allows a greater opportunity to establish patterns faster.

  22. Used 250 worth of gift cards and took advantage of the tackle warehouse sale. Several of the lucky crafts are on sale, so I got several sizes and colors. Also picked up some Norman cranks before the price goes up, some line, and some soft plastics in colors/brands I can't get local. After all I've spent the last few months I'll be surprised if my wife doesn't throw me out. That will be really bad since I'm pretty sure there's no way and can walk and carry all my rods, reels, and tackle very far

  23. I use lots of different baits. I'm in Tennessee but fish a couple rivers that sound very similar to yours. On top I like poppers, small walkers like Sammy 85's, small 1/8 oz buzzbaits (usually black). I like hard jerkbaits a lot too. All kinds of brands but usually in the 3"-4 1/2" range in shallow rivers depending on the size of the forage fish I see. This time of year I catch more on floaters like original rapalas, rogues, bomber long a, and lucky crafts. Other hard baits I really like are square bills and medium depth cranks. I use all kinds from shad raps to wiggle warts. Shad raps, rapala dts, wiggle warts, bagleys, bomber a, Normans are what I use most I usually use ones that are designed to run deeper than the bottom where I am fishing and use craw colors and grind them in the bottom. I use inlines like rooster tails and small underspins like the fish head spin with super fluke jr trailer in bait fish colors, and some spinnerbaits, but I only seem to do well with spinnerbaits after a rain when there is color in the water. Then I like the war eagle finesse spinnerbaits in 3/16 and 5/16 in spot remover and pond scum perch. Soft jerkbaits, senkos, and trick worms weightless. I like the zoom super fluke jr, 4" senko or dinger, and white or chartreuse trick worms weightless. I catch a lot on soft swimbaits. My favorite river bait is are the 3 inch keitech easy shiners and fat impacts, but I've used others with success. On the bottom I like finesse jigs, usually 1/16-3/16, but sometimes I use 1/4-3/8 if it has rained or there is a lot of current. I want the bait to barely stay in place and maybe drift a little down stream like a natural crawfish if lifted off the bottom. Most of the time I drag or shake it though. Favorite colors are mixtures of greens and browns with some orange highlights like my local craws. I fish tube jigs from small bitsy tube up to 3 1/2" tubes the same way. I use these and grubs on jig heads and drag on bottom, but sometimes they like them swimmer and only scraping bottom every few feet. I use the same colors with tube jigs and grubs as with regular skirted jigs. Natural craw colors. I Texas rig small craws, finesse worms, and small creatures also. Usually 1/8-3/16 weight and small ewg hook. Work them like the jigs and other plastics. Colors are simple. In clear water anywhere I like to match the hatch as a fly fisherman would say. All my local craws are brown or green with orange highlights, so anything that color is what I use for craw imitating baits. I use black blue if the water is muddy though. In baits that imitate baitfish, shad, chubs, Creek minnows, panfish, and trout are what the bass in my local rivers feed on. Look around while fishing your local rivers at baitfish and turn over a few rocks to find craws. See what the main colors are and imitate that. Smallmouth and spots also like some chartreuse at times, so I always try something like sexy shad on my reaction baits, and I also dip a lot of my jig trailers and soft plastics in chartreuse and orange dye because smallies and spots seem to like it. Other tips I can give is to walk or wade very quietly almost like hunting while fishing if the water is clear and keep movement to a minimum before you at least make a few casts in a new area. Also smallmouth and spots seem to like current better than largemouth, but all three species seem to use rocks and downed wood as ambush spots and current breaks quite a bit. I always catch more while retrieving my bait downstream with the current than upstream. As far as equipment I usually use shorter spinning rods for everything because of overhanging trees but also because they are versatile and can fish a wide range of baits. I sometimes take a lighter baitcast outfit though because I prefer it with cranks and spinnerbaits. Line is usually 8-10lb mono or copolymer because of water clarity. Sorry I wrote such a long post but one bait would never work for me and I've been fishing rivers for bass over 20 years. I actually fish rivers and ponds more than local larger lakes. I don't think I'm an expert by any means and I'm constantly learning new stuff like the ned rig most recently off sites like this. I just wanted to help out some of my fellow bassresource members that may not fish rivers as much.

  24. Nearly every bass angler starts off with 1 rod and reel plus a few lures. Today multiple rods and reel combination seem to be the norm, in reality you can only fish 1 at a time. When you go fish lakes for the first time take the rod and reel combo you catch the most fish with. Today you can research fish reports for nearly any lake in the country and determine what the locals are using to catch bass. You more than likely have something that will work, if not buy it locally when you get there. I traveled all over the country on business trips and only used 1 bait casting outfit and a small tackle bag, caught lots of bass everywhere using Texas rigged worms and jigs. My tackle bag had 12 lb Big Game mono, needle nose pliers, sun screen, small flat file, 3/0 worm hooks, 3/16 oz planted bullet weights, 6" straight tail and 7 1/2" ribbon tail worms, 7/16 oz jig and #11 pork frog, all in purple and brown colors. If I needed anything else I would buy it locally. Tom PS, today you couldn't take that bag on a airplane!

  25. Caught what I believe would be my new personal best tonight, certainly the largest I've ever put on a scale... 5.58lbs Was fishing the Sudbary river in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Some downpours had just moved through the area and it was very overcast and humid. Lots of hydrilla and lily pads scattered throughout the river which got to a max depth of about 10' in the area that I paddled. Water temp was 79F. Caught the fish on a livetarget hollow body frog on a line of emersed hydrilla.

  27. That's one impressive day on the water! Congrats, (insert clapping here) ...still shaking? And trust me, you wont forget that afternoon, ever,;.... See why my favorite lure is a jig? I strongly believe when the big girls are biting nothing beats it, NOTHING. And here yet is proof again. I'm happy for you as I know that feeling, that, omg, what a day I just had, I hope to beat it someday feeling. For some time, you will reflect on it, and still be in awe. relish in it, you deserve it.. its definately an awesome accomplishment. Kudos to you! Get one of those collage pic frames, put those lipped fish pics in it. The memory will never leave you. But still, you have the opportunity,.. take it. I wish I did just this, as it's nice to reflect back on those days I had like that, memory serves well, but pics remind one more often. Again,.. congrats man,....thats awesome!

  28. May 1986 - SE Massachusetts. Small pond, fishing from the bank, using a 7" Rapala minnow in a complete downpour. Only fish I caught that day. Weighed in at 7 pounds 3 ounces on certified scale about an hour after catch. Unfortunately, I have not caught anything close to that size since. After nearly a 20 year absence from fishing, I am hoping to turn that around.

  29. I'm in Florida so take this for what it's worth. I use a black 12 inch worm with as light a sinker as you can get away with. Here's the catcher - a cast/retrieve should take a minimum of three, that's right, THREE MINUTES ! Just crawl it along the bottom. They know it's there. If you work the lure any faster you might as well not even go.

  30. False and false. I have small hands. You could only jump over the high bar head first until you couldn't. That's a 400 Calcutta with a No Ratz handle. 300E on an 8' rod, etc. People fish however they want, but the word "can't" should have been retired a long time ago.
    2 points
  31. It depends on how you hold the rod and reel. You obviously don't use a 8' swimbait rod and round reel that can't be held by palming the reel. You don't run the line over your index finger using a casting reel unless your hands are very large, mine aren't. For me I rely on my index finger and thumb to feel the line to detect the slightest strikes. No rod ever made can transmit the feel strikes better then your finger tips on the line. The foregrip allows me to hold the rod in a position where I am in control, the rod is balanced, the line going over fingers during the lure retrieves and know exactly what the lure is doing, even in total darkness. 37. I know this isnt a bass but I caught my PB northern pike this year in March on Long Lake, WA from the bank. I was throwing a firetiger husky jerk size 14 on a MH7' rod with 40lb braid and no leader. I know Im reckless sometimes but I didnt have a leader and it was that time of the year. Regardless, it was about 10' of water with weeds on the bottom, perfect spawning habitat. I threw it out there, cranked it down to its depth and paused for about 30 seconds. Gave it a twitch, 30 second pause and as soon as I was about to twitch it again my line just starts screaming to the right. I knew it was big just because of how heavy it felt. It was like i was hung on a log that was going with the river current! We get it to the bank after 15 mins and I see the size of this thing and my heart just starts pounding! It slashed us all so good when it turned to run again, I was frozen but whatever, more than worth wet pants to hold this giant. 42" 22.23lbs splashed** it did not slash us lol although its teeth could be considered knives.

  38. Most expensive usable lure I "found" was a Storm Arashi crankbait attached to the mouth of a big catfish that ate my swimbait. He also had a football jig stuck in his side, so he had been busy breaking hearts & lines. Changed out hooks on the Arashi & it was like new. The lure I was happiest to find was one of my own. I busted off a Strike King 3XD in a brushpile and then found it floating in the same cove about 5 months later. I say it was mine because it had the red hooks I always switch too that I am pretty sure no one else on the lake uses. It had some moss & gunk growing on it, so it had been underwater a while. Not sure how it finally broke loose & floated to the top, maybe that catfish freed it. .

  40. fished the Sudbary river from 2:30p-7:30p this evening. Pretty weedy and shallow, lots of hydrilla and pads. Managed my new official PB largemouth at 5.58 lbs on a topwater hollow bodied frog... What a blast that was. Water temps were around 79 degrees and I caught 6 bass while I was there along with a few sunfish.

  41. I caught my pb in February while in a trout fishing tournament. It was about 5pm and i was fishing a large flat area. used an ultra light shimano rod and a small okuma reel. I was throwing a drop shot with 4lb fc line, small trout worm hook and a bright pink lip ripper trout worm. I must have dragged that thing right on top of her bed and really ticked her off. I just thought I had a huge trout at first. Then I saw it jump out of the water. Biggest bass I had ever seen! People on shore were yelling at me to be careful and not break it off.....well yeah, that was my plan. After about 10 min finally got her in the net and to the dock scales. 12.1 lbs!!! I couldn't believe it. I eased her back in to the water so I could try and catch her when she is 14 lbs.

  42. Just reeling the new line off of the filler spool with no tension on the line will do this. Your line has to be snug on the reel. I like to wear a leather glove and pinch the line as I reel it onto the reel.

  45. I have the MHM in both an avid & legend elite. Great rods for baits up to an ounce in weight. I like to use braid with them since the moderate action keeps the fish pinned along with a moderate drag. Go with the avid if you can. I use mine for both crankbaits & jerkbaits.

  46. I've used the avid rod in this model for the same stuff. Nice rod and pretty sensitive, especially for a cranking rod. I liked it for squarebills, lipless, and medium divers, as long as you don't fish a lot of weeds or cover. I prefer a mod fast for that or even a fast action to help pull lures free. Great rod for most cranking stuff though. About the only things I wouldn't use it for would be small balsa baits like a lot of customers or Bagley honey B's or shad raps, or for deep cranking with 15+ ft divers

It's always better to be on the same page as your lawyer. Also it use to be that the woman pretty much had a cake walk in these cases. Not so much any more. Good luck. Oh don't send her a dime that you don't have a record of exactly what it was for etc.
