  1. Again from Mr Texas Rig Larry Nixon! Being the meticulous professional he is, Nixon has spent countless hours examining the action of plastic worms in swimming pools. Years of constant experimentation have allowed him to realize the unique properties of an unpegged Texas rig. “If you throw an unpegged Texas rig into the water and watch it, the weight hits the bottom about eight inches in front of your worm,” Nixon said. “Once the weight hits, the worm sinks downward like a dead-sticked Yamamoto Senko. I’ve always had so many quality bites at the beginning of my cast and I think that’s why.”

  8. I tried this rig for the first time today and wow am I surprised at its effectiveness. I caught a new personal best in a relative's pond (I was fishing alone so the picture isn't great). They always seem to hit it as the lure is falling. Needless to say, I am very pleased. I would definitely recommend this to everyone!

  10. here's some advice buddy, slow down a notch and let folks answer the half dozen other threads you've started on the same topic. not being mean nor insulting, just trying to help a brother out! on that note, i own a fury and it's a great rod. zodias felt like a pretty solid rod when i held it in a local store, but nothing special and not worth the extra $ especially if you're getting the fury for $85 as you said in another post. and a lew's lfs isn't really a cheap reel. i don't own an LFS, but have 3 lew's casting reels and they're all solid performers.

  12. Another greatly exaggerated part of bass fishing is catch & release! Selective harvesting is proven more beneficial than catch & release!

  17. One problem you might find is that once all the salt dissolves out of a full ZinkerZ, it might actually float the entire rig, jighead and all. That happens a lot with a 1/2 ZinkerZ and a 1/32-oz jighead. For upsizing, we usually go to something like a full sized HulaStickZ. Another popular option is a 4" Zoom lizard - still a small bait, but bigger profile that will work well on the 1/15-oz head. -T9

  18. Fish whenever you can - But if I had to pick 2 trips with the best chance to catch a big bass . . . . I'd go with Tues April 19th - At Night And some time Thurs & Fri the 21st and / or 22nd of April. Prime time might be the hours right before & during the start of the barometric pressure drop. Might be in the darkness late Thursday night or pre-dawn hours of Friday morning. btw ~ Full Moon - rises 8:47 pm your local time on the 22nd. Good Luck A-Jay

  23. the DNR have the limits in place for a reason. believe it or not, taking some home is part of sustaining a healthy population. so long as it's legal, i'm fine with letting each do their own thing....

  26. Slightly "tip heavy" is not a bad attribute for a jerkbait rod. The whole tip heavy thing with St. Croix rods is over played internet gossip. There's a couple models I've held that definitely need the right reel, or some ballast added to the rear. Very few rods at this price escape this. I remember everyone saying that the tiny bit of cork missing when they went to split grips ruined the balance - nonsense. I find you do have to match ANY BRAND rod with the right reel. And remember, every time you tie a bait on, it weighs the tip down, lol.

  28. Lake Orange has plenty of jon boats to rent with trolling motors. We could all take a cooler with an aerator and see who can catch the biggest limit under 16" since there's a 16-24 protected slot! Great picnic area as well, decent bank access if there are any who prefer that.

  31. Two guys in an aluminum boat beat our eyes out in a tournament throwing beetle spins. Big cold front came in and you couldn't buy a bite on a traditional lure but they'd caught 10-11lbs on a beetle spin

  35. The Ned caught my first 20" river Smallie this year along with a trout over 20. Definately can be a big fish bait. Heck I have caught a 9" bass on a baby King Shad, still not sure how he got his mouth around the hook lol. I guess without knowing it I have been doing this for years, the zoom lizard has worked well for me too along with 4" ribbon tails. You can't go wrong with 3-5" grubs either, I am convinced that the tail makes them fish way bigger than they actually are, all the big pike and musky strikes validate this for me.

  41. Cabela's has the Fenwick Silverhawk on sale for $60, it is $10 more than you wanted to spend but it is a lot better than any other rod in that price range. That rod has Fuji Alconite guides, a good blank and a Fuji reel seat, you aren't going to get that kind of quality on any other rod in the price range. The other thing is they have a 7' medium power, moderate fast action in a spinning rod but if not that you only other option with that action in a 1 piece is a Lightning rod shock.

  42. Drop it straight down next to or into a tree and hold it steady for several seconds before shaking it lightly. A lot of times they'll whack it while it's just sitting there. It's good to use a lightwire hook because you're going to snag up a lot and the light hook will allow you to straighten it and get your jig back. You can also fish them under bobbers and either let them ride the waves to impart the action, or give them short twitches and let the jig swing under the bobber.

  43. Can't say I have, but I've had some pretty vivid dreams of fishing, usually after a really good day on the water. I've scared my wife when I set the hook in my sleep more than once. It didn't just recently start though, there was a hole in the wall by my bed at my parents house from a particularly vicious sleeping hook set.
