  3. In general my method on gear ratio is, for any bait which is moved by the rod go high gear ratio. For baits moved by the reel go lower

  7. After winning the tourney with our 29.95lbs bag a week and a half ago, I headed out the other morning with a good buddy. We're both new dads, so planning trips isnt easy. If I have time, I usually dont know until that morning. I'm incredibly lucky to have a wife who understands my passion. We had about 4 hours that we could scoot out for. High sun, 10-15 kmh winds we knew it wasnt going to be a stellar day, but we should be able to drag some up. We didnt mark near the number of fish around that we have been, but enough to keep our interest. Our first pass over the school and I hit a 5 pounder. Good starter fish, but still not the reason we fish Simcoe in the fall. Next pass, I load up on a fish that doesnt feel like anything special. Fought nearly the same as the other 4-5 pounders. As soon as it got near the boat, it "tried" to jump. Thats when I knew she was a toad. I've caught a number of 7 pounders and I knew this one was my biggest yet. Unfortunately no scale on the boat, but I imagine she went somewhere between 7.5 - 8lbs. A truly giant smallie that photos will not give justice too. Now time to go get my 9.

  8. Leaving the scales at home is my favorite way to hunt big bass. It works better than any other technique I have tried.

  10. For me the positives of a braid/fluoro leader set up out weigh the negatives...........by a huge margin. Positives: #1....Braid, as a main line handles much better (esp. on spinning gear) with zero memory/coiling/handling issues far longer than fluoro. #2....Flouro is much MUCH more abrasion resistant than braid, which is important to me fishing around things with teeth and zebra muscle infested water. #3.........Economy, like I said before, braid lasts a LONG time, and so does a spool of fluorocarbon when used as leader material. Negatives: None that I can think of, then again, I have never had issues with the connecting knot that were not my own fault.

  18. Most of the time I dont use one . I throw spinnerbaits in the snags and dont want that extra hook hanging up .

  19. The lower gear ratio is a better all around gear ratio but the popular view nowadays is the higher gear ratio is better for bottom contact. Personally, if I were going to buy one reel and I knew that I would be throwing baits with resistance, like Spinnerbaits, I would get the lower gear ratio because the 6.3:1 is fine for bottom contact as well as spinnerbaits.

  21. If it looks like a prey item to them they're going to still hammer it... somewhat similarly a lot of guys catch huge bass in Clear Lake on rainbow trout swimbaits even though no trout reside in the lake.

  23. Drop shot. Keeps the weight on the bottom and the bait off. Also good for cold water as you can keep it very still for long periods of time! Jeff

  28. How many neon pink and chartreuse forage do you see swimming around? None I bet...yet they catch fish. I prefer the natural patterns myself, but in certain conditions ill throw around the bright colors. Worry more about where you're fishing, is actually holding fish vs the color of your bait and whether its the "right" color. I throw sexy shad colors in water that has never held a real shad and it gets annihilated.

  30. Yup. Pretty much across the board consensus to use them. I didn't use them for a long time because I thought it was unnecessary. I didn't realize how many times I was probably getting swiped at but the fish were missing the bite. Also, I wanted to fish. I didn't like all the steps necessary. Re-tie the lure. Put on scent. Then put on a trailer hook and a piece of plastic tubing. Found the easy solution. VMC makes some great trailer hooks with the tubing already on it. Takes a whole second to apply. Difference is astounding.

  31. It looks like a horse from a carousel, like Darren asked was it stationary or was it jumping out of the water breathing fire? No joke that sucker looks like a plesiosaur. Google "Plesiosaur".

  33. Glacier Glove - I have 3 pairs of them. Different weights depending on how cold it is outside. Under Armour fleece liner good for 40-50 degree temps - not waterproof. Newest acquisition is the Simms ExStream glove (expensive but worth it if you fish in the cold) - very warm, fleece lined, thumb & index finger fold back so you can tie knots and stuff. They don't have the best grip on them though and given the fold back fingers, they're not waterproof but are resistant to precip (rain/snow). Finding the perfect fishing glove is tough to do. I have like 5 different pairs and keep all of them on board during the winter.

  39. The big fish were eating this week for me! Wednesday was my biggest smallmouth of the year at 4lb 11oz on a Luck-E-Strike STX jerkbait. Thursday I only got 3.5 hours of fishing and I took too long to figure them out. Once I did though, I caught 2 4lb 10oz, a 4lb 12oz, and a 5lb largemouth. First one ate a homemade brush jig, the last 3 were on my homemade bladed jigs in black and blue.

  40. Good luck on the shoulder. Getting rid of the pain will be well worth it. Follow the PT to the letter and you will probably get your motion and strength back to about 95%. Put my boat away this weekend also. It will be a long winter indeed.

  41. Never ceases to amaze me , but, every year some fisherman have to fish the last ice that is not yet melted in the spring.......Invariably some body pushes his luck too far and their truck sinks through the weak ice and sinks to the bottom of the lake......Not hardly worth it to get the last panfish supper....A local barber did just that with his brand spankin new Ford pickup, my oh my!
