  1. Completed the '12 Antares, '13 Metanium, and '14 Conquest trinity. Shimano makes a nice reel. Not sure what it's going to ride yet.

  2. In my last report, we were crushing largies in the deep weeds. Since then, that bite has died off a bit, but not before my buddy smoked a 6+ pounder, his biggest of the year. On Sunday we had a club tournament on a smaller lake and the weather was nuts. It was 8C (46F) with 40kmh winds and pouring rain. I could not figure the fish out. I tried fishing smallies, I tried largies in milfoil, on rocks. I fished slow, I fished fast. I had 1 small fish at 1pm. Then I punched a mat and got a fish over 4. I kept going. In the next 2 hours, I landed 12 more keepers and managed a 3rd place finish. Punching mats in 1-2 ft of water. I spent this past week exploring a bunch of smaller lakes in the Haliburtons. I went looking for big fish, but was instead rewarded with numbers. Big numbers. Over 2 days I landed close to 100 fish, mostly on jerkbaits in 18-45 feet of water. So much fun. Had a trip out to the main lake Simcoe yesterday, Found lots, but with high pressure and lack of wind, it was a tough bite. Still managed some good ones though.

  3. If he was fighting a fish at the time, it's called back reeling. In the "old" days, spinning reels did not always have very dependable drag systems so guys would flip the anti reverse switch and control the fish by letting line out turning the handle backward as needed. Those who got used to fighting fish that way still do it even though the drags are much better on modern spinning reels.

  8. The only thing I'm picky about on a jig is the hook, the skirt and collar can be replaced, if I keep it long enough, I bank fish some rocky spots and sometimes my jigs don't make it back.

  9. Id say atleast 40lb braid
    2 points
  10. You may end up having many issues with 20lb braid on a baitcaster. Mainly line dig digging in and trouble casting. You want to have a line diameter of 10 lb mono to about 20 lb mono on that reel for best results. I would look at getting a 50 lb braid and using that. Loosen the drag a little bit and you are ready to go. As far as a knot I use a uni knot on everything I tie with no issues. I hear a lot of guys here say use a Palomar knot. Look up either one on you tube to see how to tie it correctly. Sounds like whatever knot you are using is slipping through and untying.

  12. Barbie fishing rod setup? With fishing lures what I buy, I buy extra for my son's, there spouses and grandchildren. Fishing reels / rods too. Almost fourty years ago as my son's were born I purchased them hunting rifles and shotguns. They weren't one month old.

  13. especially since you can re-engage the clutch without touching the handle or thumb bar by pushing the hood back down. That might be my favorite thing about the t3. I find myself trying to do that with other reels.
    2 points
  14. Dude, you'll love it. Both my T3's are 6.3, so they're on finesse and cranking duty, but I used it on my jig rod before I got a faster tatula and it was effortless pitching jigs. I think that's where the t-wing shines brightest. IMO, it's an all around better casting and retrieving system, but when you go to pitching with it you won't want to put it down.

  16. Hooksets are free, if you feel a bite, think you feel a bite or anything different set the hook. Yes sometime it will be grass or rocks but you will learn the difference over time while hooking more fish.

  21. GoPro is a great choice as others have said. Get the model you can afford and get a suction cup or the jaw clamp for the boat, whichever will work best for your situation. If you are shooting from shore find a way to mount it on a tripod or something stable. Head/Chest cams are ok, but if you move around a lot your going to make your viewers nauseous.

  22. If I'm catching big pike I'll look elsewhere. I have caught plenty of bass mixed in with small pike though. Just a month ago my father-in-law and I caught 90 bass in an afternoon and nothing short of 40 pike in the same areas on the same baits. Bass ranged from 1lb to 4lbs. None of the pike were over 3lbs. Sometimes you have to sort through them and other times you need to make a change in location.

  23. Here's how I rig them. Most of the time it's with a 1/8th ounce weight. A drop of super glue at the nose keeps the bait buttoned up to the weight. The bait is upside down in the photo. A good jig head is the Keitech Super Round Tungsten jig head. I use the 1/8th ounce with a 2/0 hook. But I also have 1/16th ounce, 3/16th ounce and 1/4 ounce hooks for experimentation. The bait in the image is a Rage Tail Craw. But Zoom craws and the grand daddy Mister Twister also work well. You can catch several fish on a single bait, unless the pickerel or other toothy critters are after them. There is no right or wrong way to fish 'em. Vary your retrieve, and let the fish tell you what they want. Our most common practice is to wait five to ten seconds after splash down depending on the depth we are fishing. From there you can twitch and jerk and let it settle after each "jump". You can also swim it.

  25. Agreed. With the exception of the day we threw spoons for them in December, all my bigger fish have come shallow. My largest, just under 5lbs, was in about 2' on a spinnerbait. A year ago my father and I got 2nd in our get together (granted it was spring) but we caught over 16lbs on 5 fish on the Ned in about 2-3 feet of water. Or... buy a cheap one on ebay and let me paint it for you

  26. Went to a local reservoir after school, found 3-6" of visibility and thought what the heck I'll try it...One fish on a spinnerbait, two on a KVD 1.5, two on a 1/4oz black buzzbait, and half a dozen or so on a texas rigged baby brush hog. I would just shake it in a laydown for 15-20 seconds and they would find it. All dinks, this was the biggest one, measured 15" Muddy! Deep, the lake has dropped quite a bit, I found this buried in a stump. Looks like something did have a hold of it when you swung judging from the amputee baby rage craw.

  27. Got a story about BFS. My first setup was a 6'9" ML-XF LTB, with an Alphas. Had 6lb fluoro line on it. I had that Alphas tuned to perfection. Was out with a buddy one day, and asked him if he wanted to try a BFS setup. He took it and backlashed it about 6 times in a row. After he handed it back to me he asked, what the *&%% is BFS anyway? I replied, "in your hands it means Backlash For Sure".

  28. try a smaller weight like a 1/16oz, a larger hook and no weight, or a belly weighted hook like is used for swimbaits or rage rigs. what size reel are you using? a larger spool makes it easier to get longer casts. the rod could be a little longer, but i can cast a size 6 hook and a piece of crawler with no additional weight farther than 10ft on my old 5'6" medium original ugly stick spinning rod using a 2500 size reel and 10lb mono. some of the problem could be in your casting technique. try spreading your feet a little and step into it as you cast while using both hands to fling it out as hard as you possibly can

  29. I have the Powell and am happy with it. Kinda wish it had more give in the tip to get more distance. I would not recomend mini guides for frogging. The stuff you pick up on the line, when fishing slop, clogs the tiny guides.

  30. I have the Powell and love. I'm 5'10" and went from a rod similar to what you're using. It takes a little bit to get used to it but I really like it now. It can handle any cover I throw at it and it walks the frog easy. That was my first Powell rod and now I am switching all my rods to Powell. Its such a light rod so I can throw it all day even though its 7'3" heavy.

  34. xcalibur zell pop. I have seen no other popper sit in the water like this one does. Its tail sits down in the water and when you pop it, it creates an amazing slurp sound Get one before the are out of stock everywhere. TW no longer carries them.

  39. There´s one thing that you aren´t taking in consideration, besides being harder to pull with a faster reel, lots of deep diving crank baits simply refuse to work properly when pulled faster, the same resistance makes them roll on their sides, so here the speed at which they are being pulled has a direct negative impact in the way the lure functions and performs.

  42. I'm a Plano box guy. I'll label the box with a sharpie and when I open a storage locker they're all in a row and easy to grab what I need. I use the normal size and the thin boxes. For yak or bank fishing I'll stick an assortment of plastics in 2 - 3700 size boxes and make up 2 more with hardbaits. It's always more than enough for a days worth of fishing.

  47. Any thing with a metal frame, decent drag and good free-spool will serve you well. Pretty much any of major brand's offerings starting at around the $100 retail mark. Avoid flipping switches and "insta-gage" setups. With few exceptions they are clumsy to use a weak link mechanically. The SX is a good pitching reel. The mag only brake setup is more conducive to pitching than bombing long casts for most users.
