  1. Use a heavy surfcasting combo to fish a bucket properly.

  3. I keep a ditch bag there, and sometimes the battery. In some cases, the cart went up there as well. Pretty much anything that I didn't need while fishing, but needed to have in the boat. Believe me, if kayaks didn't have a front hatch, you'd all be squawking about why not, lol.

  4. The only technique I fish where additional capacity comes into play is long lining crankbaits. I prefer a shallow spool on the 50 size Shimano reels.

  5. Believe it or not, there is an entire academic literature in applied ethics on the question of whether the choice to engage in catch and release fishing at all is ethically justifiable. The argument against boils down to what you say here: If I do it, I cause unnecessary harm and distress to fish and I risk mortality, whereas all I gain is personal enjoyment. That is, the net benefits do not outweigh the costs. Catch and keep fishing, however, like hunting, result in a harvest in which the benefits can outweigh the mortality cost (presumably, if you harvest for food, that means there is something else you are not eating instead, which is saved). Ergo, hunting and catch and keep fishing are actually more ethically justifiable than catch and release fishing. Note, it's not an argument about what should be legal, just an argument about whether one, at the moment of decision, is ethically justified in choosing to do it, compared to not doing it, or to doing something else. There are many possible responses to this, some of which are good and some of which are bad. But my response is simply to shrug and point out that the range of alternative activities I could do for leisure instead would impose worse costs, without any greater benefit, simply by moving around more, using up more energy, and taking up more space, potentially creating more waste, and creating more lucrative markets for resource extraction and exploitation. In the face of all the myriad things humans do natural environments and creatures within them every day, even If I accept their argument, I'm quite sure my own catch and release fishing is nowhere near the most ethically problematic thing either I or they do every day.

  6. The thing to me that makes fishing so much better than hunting is that you can "score" at fishing without killing the prey. In fact, you and others can score repeatedly with the same prey in different ways. You can't do that in hunting.

  7. I don't look down upon anglers who fish with lesser equipment, but if I see some bucket brigaders sitting on a cooler full of fish, holding their rods and reels upside down, and keeping fish at a catch and release only lake, then I am going to speak up.

  8. I suppose the meaning is relative to where you're at. On a bass forum an artificial user will almost always look down their nose at fisherman on the bank fishing using bait. Keeping the fish isn't the issue, it's how the fish are caught and the equipment being used is what creates the elitism. How possibly can a guy using nightcrawler be on the same level as "angler" with 5 $500 combos and enough tackle to stock a small tackle store.

  9. If you're here long enough you will learn the real "facts" about bucket fishing. 1st - It is the act of keeping every fish caught regardless of size or possession limits. 2nd - It is almost always done by illegal aliens/immigrants/etc.. and who never, ever, have a fishing license. What you will never learn is how anyone can tell who has a fishing license or the citizenship status of the offending fisherman, or how long the poster actually stalked the bucket fisherman to know without a doubt that no fish was ever thrown back. These things we must simply assume to be the truth because its on the internet, and nothing is ever incorrect if its on the internet!

  11. You failed to stress the romance of consummating the marriage in the men's bathroom at the stadium. Just think how special the night would be. You arrive at the stadium on the steed(that word should get the juices flowing). You get front row parking for the Harley. Security takes care of the foreplay as they felt both of you up looking for boobs and booze. You both make your way over to the refreshment stand where you buy the nacho platter and a 20oz cup of Bud Light with 2 straws. Make your way to the stands(on the second level. This is key for the plan to work) and you threaten to beat up the 2 d-bags sitting in your seats(Chicks dig bad boys). After sharing the nacho platter and bud light, and sitting still thru the first half, she will need to go to the ladies room. This is when you make your move. Get up and head to the john with her(chicks dig going to the john with other people) Anyone who has spent any time hanging around ladies rooms knows the lines are always long whereas, the guys john is in and out. Lead her into the men's room(Chicks dig danger and the thrill of getting caught). Take her into the handicapped stall(More room for more positions) and throw her the bone.(Flush the toilet first in case one of you slips, the water will at least be clean) All the drunks in the john will be to busy urinating and whining about the Raiders having another bad year, and there will be no handicapped guy waiting to pee.(Wheel chairs don't go up stairs to the second level) No one will even notice the 2 of you. How could she ever say no to that?

  12. I'll start by saying that Although I own more Shimano baitcasters than any other brand, I'm not only a Shimano guy. I own the Tatula type R that I just purchased this year and several other Daiwa, Abu, and BPS reels. This focuses on what I consider to be the new flagships for Shimano for some time to come. Undoubtedly, more people will own the Curado I. I've owned and still own Curado B's, D's, and E's (and a G that I sold), and I can honestly say the I series, at least from a first year performance standpoint does pretty much everything better than previous generations. The I's cast farther and more smoothly, they handle both light and heavy tackle exceptionally well, they're more adaptable to different weather situations, and the retrieve is smoother than it's ever been with other Curado's. It's my contention that at it's price point (anywhere from $120-$200), there's not a better all purpose reel on the market. That's not to say it's the best at everything. My Daiwa Tatula R is smoother, my Abu Winch is better for heavy cranks, but really, there's hardly a reason to go with a different reel in this range unless you're a tournament fisherman or you just like having the absolute perfect reel for every application. Time will tell if it holds up like the older Curado's, but I'm very optimistic. I've used mine heavily and they're better than new out of the box (mine all took a little break in). A tiny bit of maintenance every couple of months and you're good to go. Excellent reel in all gear ratios. As for the Chronarch Ci4+... first off, it's usually around $90 more, and can usually be had for $200-$270. I think it's justified that it costs more. I'm trying to be as objective as possible here, but the Chronarch is a better reel, hands down. I often see people say the Curado is smoother or casts better or is built better. I can't say from my personal experience that's the case at all. They're both good reels, but the Chronarch is just... slick. It's as smooth as any reel I've used (I own a Daiwa T3 and a Shimano Metanium), it casts as well or better than anything I've casted, and it gives you plenty of power for all but the heaviest applications. Some people don't care for the light construction, but I love it. It's light, but not slight, and is as solid as any reel I've used. I can't say I've banged it against a concrete wall, but it's never given me a single issue. People sometimes call the Chronarch a finesse reel for flipping and pitching, and although it can be used and excels as such, it's much much more. Both excellent reels. I own two of both in different gear ratios, and I use them for everything but the heaviest applications such as deep cranking and in heavy cover, where a lower geared reel like the Abu Winch or my older 5.1 or 4.1 Curados provide more torque. I usually keep 3-5 reels on the boat, and these compromise all but one or two every time. Do I think the Chronarch is worth the extra dough? Yeah, actually I do. Consider that these reels will probably be in your inventory for the next 15-20 years or more. That's an extra $4-6/year. Absolutely worth it for a reel that's competitive with anything I've owned right out of the box. I know people mod the Curado to get it there, and that's awesome. I'm talking stock. Try both. You can't lose with either. If you're in the market, I believe they're the best all around reels at their respective price points, with the Chronarch competitive with anything out there.

  15. When I fish started frogging in pike waters I'd lose a frog or two every season. Not good. So I started using a short section of wire. Really helped, I got many of the fish and all my frogs back. Problem was the frogs were almost always totally sliced up and fished like a U-Boat afterwards. Tried the glue thing - not for me. Ended up ditching the wire and have resorted to extra cursing to help deal with the lose. A-Jay

  16. Yeah, my father-in-law has that. He doesn't grasp the notion of trying to catch something you won't eat. He also doesn't understand slot limits, which on at least one occasion lead to much disgruntlement about a walleye we made him throw back. There is also mentality (not even a mentality -- just an unquestioned impulse) that, "I caught it, I'm gonna keep it" irrespective of whether you'll actually eat the thing. Honestly, though: Please, go ahead and bug me about catch and release any time. It gives me a nice opening to explain the principle and it's purpose, and why I do it, and maybe they'll go home and think about it.

  26. So, uh guys?... Maybe I'm being captain obvious here but... these lists are garbage. These lakes are just the ones with the combination of the most miles of shoreline commercial/residential property in the most economically depressed areas. The most people with the greatest lack of money. The list is for boosting angler tourism. It has nothing to do with the fishing. Nothing. I'd guarantee that all 100 of the true "100 best lakes" in the US are kept secret and not one is on this list. Glad the same goes for most of my favorite lakes as well.

  27. ding_ding!!! I went last night to a reservoir that not many people have access to. I was in the kayak as I usually am. There were three bucket brigadiers in a jon boat keeping any and everything. I caught a bass well over 5# (no scale, no camera) on a topwater in plain sight of them. I unhooked it and admired it a few seconds. I heard one of them say "You don't want that fish?" I ignored him and let them see me let it swim away. It makes me feel so good to watch a big fish swim away.

  31. I agree with the costa del mar glasses with the 580g glass being top of the line. They are unreal. I have tried every cheap pair of polarized glasses imaginable, and these blow them all out of the water tenfold. Crazy clear, and comfortable, and I never want to take them off! I use the amber lense with green mirror outside, and it works great, I can see great in and out of the water in any weather condition. I would never want another pair of shades, these fit all aspects for me. I even wear some dorky floaters when on the water, because I would probably lose these just like the other 5 pairs that fell into the water never to be found again. The thing that would hurt me the most is that I couldn't get them again for what I paid, got a steal on the auction site. Brand new paid $80, retail for new, (I tried the same pair on in the store) cost $250! Heck of a deal for that price!! Keep an eye out for later, the cheap ones will get you by, but in the end, they are the cheap ones, and you get what you pay for!

  33. Sounds like the honeymoon is over before the wedding. C'mon man, telling us that you are a diehard Raiders fan is one thing, but your fiancé'? And to think, you once had a "Dear Raider" thread on this forum. At least I seem to recall that. Is it a hallucination? Going on the assumption that you indeed did start a Dear Raider thread or service, who would take advice from someone who bleeds silver and black? The line between fantasy and reality gets more blurred with the passing years, so I could be wrong. p.s. If you didn't have a Dear Raider thread, you should have. Or maybe a reprise of the book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People".

As for the bait slipping down the hook - I highly recommend you check out a product called "Parasite clips". They are design specifically to address this problem and they work perfectly. 44. What I don't like is misinformation! Sorry BobP but it's been scientifically proven dozens of times that fluoro stretches as much as and in some brands more than mono. Monofilament, fluorocarbon, copolymer all stretch but but stretching has nothing to do with feeling a bite since it does not occur until after hook set. Feeling the bite has to do with vibration being transmitted up the line, down the rod, through the hands and interrupted by the brain. Feeling a bite requires keeping a certain amount of tension on your line so you can feel the bite while at the same time keeping a certain amount of slackness in your line so the bass doesn't feel you.
