  1. That's a Loaded Question . . You're asking a bunch of Tackle Junkies if you "Need" more gear . . . Of course you do. Seriously, a few moving baits would be a good idea; squarebill cranks, spinnerbaits etc. And this guys says stock up ! A-Jay

  2. Got out for a few hours today to look for some big smallies. With the full moon this week and water temps still in the low 60's I expected some smallies would make another push shallow. There werent as many bedding fish as I expected and the ones that were on beds were paired up and spooky. It's not a tournament, so I really didnt need to bother those fish. Let them do their thing. I moved out to some gravel ridges a little deeper than the bedding fish and threw tubes on the edges. The bite was tough, but I landed 7 or 8 fish, with the biggest 5 going around 23lbs. I dont mind a tough bite when the fish are big.

  3. I caught my first Big slammer fish today, pulled out the scale to get a weight and what do ya know the battery was dead. So I took measurements, this thing was def a football, 21"x 20"! (steel tape so girth could be a little off) Weight calculator says 8.6. Is that thing fairly accurate? Either way it was a good fish.

  4. Bass season finally opened up on Saturday and it has been good so far. We've got smallies as shallow as a foot and as deep as 15. A 4" prodigy tube and a 5" impact stick has done most of the damage so far. Lots more to come.

  6. Are you catching fish? Are you enjoying your time on the water? if the answer to those is yes, then keep on doing whatever you want to do as it is working Sure more baits and techniques will broaden the possible bass you catch but it isn't a guarantee nor will it guarantee you have more enjoyment.

  7. Tom, your response to a brand new member was neither congenial nor ambitious. It goes without saying, every single topic and subject has been revisited uncountable times. If the survival of the BR forum depended on new & unique material, the time has come to close these corridors. Mr. McCauley rightfully pointed out: "There are always new experiences & opinions to be heard, whether from people who weren't here or from those who've learned new things since then" Kudos Neil Roger

  12. My brother and I each ordered an Inshore Abu Garcia Orra. My dad had some metered 30lb braid left over from spooling up his reels for our boat (every 10 meters is a different color so you can tell how much line you have out when deep dropping or trolling) so we put it on there, looks pretty cool!

  13. My wife and I fished Great East yesterday. The weather report was for 5-10 mph winds, but it was more like 10-20 mph all morning, so fishing in a 14ft tin boat was a challenge. We spent most of our time in the larger basin. Fished the weeds close to shore and the main channel. Caught pickerel but no bass. I lost one (pickerel I think) that I would have loved to have seen. Big top water blow up, rod bent over, line going out, then he broke me off. I made one cast just as a big wind gust came up. That's why if you happen to look at a particular tree, about 12ft up, you'll see a new hollow bodied frog wedged in a branch. plowed through white caps all the way back to the launch. So at the end of the day. We were wind burned. Didn't catch any bass. ( we have yet to unlock the secrets of LM on Great East and have a multi bass day) Lost a 7$$ brand new lure. Wrenched my back jumping up and down in the boat, swinging a paddle to try and reach said lure. Did not get to tweak my new sonar so that it shows fish as arches, rather than lines or blobs that I think are fish. Used up a vacation day to do all of the above. On the way home my wife and I were talking, and came to the conclusion. Even with all of the above. we had a lot of fun, can't wait to go again. Jim

  14. I really like to eat - so I'm always packing food for a day (or night) out on the water. Cliff bars are almost always part of the plan along with some seasonal fruit and perhaps a cheese stick or two. Staying hydrated is an absolute priority. A-Jay

  16. Thanks for the responses. I never heard of a hair rig before but I'm anxious to try it. I would like to make some dough bait with creamed corn but since I hope to go out tomorrow morning I think I'll just stop and pick up some sweet corn and give it a shot. I'll let everyone know if I catch anything! Thanks again!

  17. IMO, it would be a mistake to pay attention to the shoreline (fish don't). Deep water can be close to shore, and shallow water can be faaar offshore, the shoreline is just a pawn. On your contour chart, pinpoint the food shelves that adjoin the most rapid depth change (per current water level) Then during your field survey, locate the best cover adjoining the best structures. 21. Unless you were about to starve I can't think of a good reason to eat an 18 pound bass. That fish has to taste so nasty and have such high mercury levels. Could have taken pictures, measurements and released it to get bigger and gotten a good replica mount made. Most likely someone has caught that fish at least once in it's life and released it so he had a chance to catch that monster, but now nobody else has the chance. Maybe the fish was hooked badly and wouldn't have survived regardless, who knows, just hate to see a monster that nobody else will have a chance to tangle with.

  22. I just saw on my facebook page from Wilderness Systems a video of the ATAK with an electric power device that sits down between your legs and a foot peddle device. Wow. I don't know, do I want a new $1,000 Dell PC or do I want to spend $2,000+ on that ATAK with an electric motor? I could buzz all around a big lake with that ATAK and motor!

  27. I used to get bent about it, but.... They have every right to be there too, it is public water. Unless they are going out of the way to purposely screw with me, I just curse under my breath and keep fishing. It doesn't seem to hurt the fishing anyways, and on some days it actually improves it. Now a days, I get more ticked off at other idiot bass fishermen who think because I am not rocking a $70k, 70mph rig, they can just ignore me and cut me off, or come right in on me.....I will say, that every moron that's done it, has done it once and never again for reasons I am not going to elaborate on....because sometimes I do things that make ME the jack off.

  30. Fill a 5 gallon bucket (or something similar) 1/3 of the way with quickcrete. Place you pvc in and then add water. Let it sit overnight, and you are good to go. 37. Spent the morning on Buffumville Reservoir with Gramma...plenty of keeper bass, some nice crappie and a huge pickerel. Swimmin Superfluke Jr. and 3" Sluggos did all the damage. Fished hard in 8' weeds.

  41. It's been fixed. Also having never used the GLX I can't comment on the similarities and differences, but I would just go for it. You only live once. $100 spread out over the next 15-20 years is nothing. Totally worth it to not second guess yourself

  42. I was thinking about this exact topic the other day. The thing about guys like KVD is they force the other guys in the sport to perform that much better. It happens in sports all the time. The athletes today are head and shoulders above the athletes of yesteryear. A lot of ole timers would most certainly argue the point. Even mediocre basketball players of today would more than likely have been superstars thirty years ago. Athletes are always getting better and records are always being broken. Same goes for fishing. Like I said could it be that KVD has forced the rest of the field to perform that much better? There isn't a doubt in my mind. And I bet they would agree.

  44. I like my Cabelas guide select bibs better than the bass pro ones but I like the 100mph jacket best. Simms makes good stuff but the price point is rediculous. They have been that way for as long as I can remember. I used to fly fish a lot and simms was popular back then and still charging double.

  45. As I've stated on another thread in the "Fishing Tackle" forum, I've become addicted to tying big and small bucktail jigs. I used to toy with custom painted crankbaits and catch some fish but these are the first lures that I have just flat out crushed big fish on that I built from start to finish. It's a lot of fun to see what I can come up with.
