  2. Fished a local reservoir from my kayak today. Went waaaaaay back in a creek, where no boat can go, mainly to explore. Skipped my jig up under a tree in a shade pocket, and started to swim it out when I felt a tiny tap and my jig started swimming sideways. Swung for the fences, and all hell broke loose. I didn't have much line out so the fight was very short and violent, but I managed to lip her and get her in the kayak. Went 23" and weighed 6lbs.

  3. Welcome to the forum Matt. Should you wait for a 2nd tick? Perish the thought! When you retrieve your lure, check to see if the hook-point has indeed busted thru the plastic trailer. If not, you might need more hair on the hookset. On the other hand, if the hook-point lies well outside the trailer, I'd continue the same hook-set, and you're bound to experience a reversal in fortune. Good Luck. Roger

  8. X2 on the Structure Bug. I was on vacation at Kentucky Lake last week and used a Structure Bug on a SK Jointed Structure head fishing ledges, slowly crawling it along the bottom with occasional pauses. My group caught fish on various plastics (SK Rage Craw, SK Space Monkey, big worms, shaky head w/ finesse worm) but all of my fish were caught on the Structure Bug. I just couldn't put it down.

  12. Read all of Ned's blogs on In-Fisherman. He'd have you believe that finesse fishing didn't start on the west coast, didn't start on the highland reservoirs of Tennessee or Kentucky, no it started in and around eastern Kansas. Me, I don't know. I know that in the mid-70's I was reading about Slider Fishing in Fishing Facts magazine. I was reading how "Lunker love Nightcrawlers" in Fishing facts magazine. (a live bait, but still a true finesse approach) I know that road runners were made in Missouri and that the Mar-Lynn company, which made many of the baits that Harold Endsley used, was located in some KC suburb. I don't know anything about the evolution of west coast finesse stuff, but what do I know, I didn't have even semi-regular access to a boat until some time in the 80's. At the time, I was a hippie pond fishing meat fisherman. I think that it is possible that different minds, working on a similar problem in different areas, can come up with similar solutions to a fishing problem, with out very much cross pollination - information wise. So, the notion of who came up with finesse fishing first & when, begs the question , "Who cares?"

  13. Luckily they don't have much in terms of teeth, so you can lip them. In reality, they aren't that dangerous so long as you just stay aware of the fins.

  14. to be honest, and don't take this the wrong way, I'd spend more time learning how to properly tie an Alberto knot and less time looking for a new knot.

  15. Spinnerbaits over the slop. Drop Shot rig with bait over slop and weight in slop. Wake Baits. Toads buzzed across water. Buzzbaits. Frogs, as you mentioned above. Unweighted trick worm in pink or white moved across the water like a snake.

  17. My friend and I went out yesterday morning to Rodman Reservoir and put only four bass in the boat, plus a catfish, a mudfish, and a pickerel. The largest bass weighed 7 pounds 2 ounces. See pix below . . .

  18. Assuming you are using jigs that are 3/8th ounce or heavier I would recommend you go heavier with your leader material. Look at 15 or 17 pound test. Bass are not line shy and the heavier line will not alter your presentation with those sized jigs. I use the Uni to Uni knot and go with 6 wraps on both ends. More wraps may be better but for me I get a more uniform knot with the 6 wraps. Lastly (and this is just me), I have no use for fluorocarbon and I use 14 or 17 pound test Trilene XT Mono (both of which test out at 20 pounds or more). My issue with fluoro is that if you stretch it (like on a snag), you weaken it. On a strong hookset the braid has no give, it is all transmitted to your leader.

  29. The way I fish a spinnerbaits is I usually do a roll cast (that usually prevents helicoptering) past my target. It also allows the spinnerbaits to enter the water a lot quieter.

  33. This is my new Ned Bullet Mold. Just in the experimental phase. I have some baits out being field tested and it looks good so far. The baits are 2.75" in length and a max. diameter of .450", 1/0 hook works well. Colors 1; PB&J 2; Baby Bass w/Silver, Gold Flake, White w/Silver Flake, Pearl Highlites 3; Brown Pumpkin w/Green Flake, Orange w/Red, Copper Flake 4; Baby Smallmouth w/Black, Gold, Copper Flake, White w/Silver Flake, Pearl Highlites 5; Green Brown Pumpkin w/Black, Purple, Copper Flake 6; Green Pumpkin w/Purple, Copper Flake 7; Junebug, w/Blue Flake 8; Kyles Purple Flash( Smoke w/Purple, Disco Purple Flake) Bait is named after our very own Kyle (Senko Lover) and is more translucent than the picture shows. I will take a pic in natural light tommorrow and add it, the picture is under LED Lighting. Brian.

  34. Seems to me you are giving the lure too much "hang time." Cast with a flatter trajectory and put your thumb on the spool near the end of the desired distance so the line can't interfere with the blades. I'll wager your problem will be solved.

  39. Sorry for the extremely late report. Conor and I hit Wolf Creek on Saturday morning in search of some brown fish. Took a gander at the outlet and the water temp was 91, so we made the run down to the rip rap past the island. Got bit shortly after arrival on a War Eagle. Had one more better fish nip me halfway back to the boat and missed him. We were marking a ton of suspended fish in about 20-25' of water where we were sitting, so Conor let his spinnerbait drift back a ways behind the boat and strolled it along. He got slammed, and broke off after a short tug on what we think was probably an angry Wiper. Would have liked to see that fish, but not long after he got bit again, this time it ended up being a 17.5" Walter. Super good fish. We got bored with the rip rap and decided to target some of those suspended fish by trolling cranks, because by this time the wind had picked up immensely and we knew we didnt have much longer before we got called off. Ended up going through a school(s) of slab Crappie that wanted nothing more than my giant 6XD. We boated 4 Crappie, nothing under 13 and the biggest being 15'. After the school had moved we decided to make a run to the wood, but by this time the mainlake was awful. Halfway back we heard the walkie go off and we were done. And sufficiently soaked. Since we both had time left, we decided to stop by Melvern to see what it looked like.....and wow. Only a foot or so of the rock jettys at the marina were above water. The marina cove in the back looked like the Lousiana bayous. The mainlake again was too rough for a run, so we fished where we could by the campgrounds. I got bit twice on the Ned, landed one, which seemed to come off of the campground itself. Conor and I joked that the fish were holding tight to the grills. Good day to be out and hit both lakes, even though Melvern was....quite less than desirable. It will be a while before that recovers.

  45. Thanks. I am going to try. Now that I am done with school and can just work and enjoy life on my days off, it would be nice to meet some girls that love fishing as much as I do. It sucks trying to get girl friends to go and sitting with someone allll day that doesn't really enjoy fishing. I don't mind if they just sit and tan,,, as long as they don't whine to go home. If their in the boat that just increased my limit on a good day

Yes fish will attack fish that are too big to consume & die shortly afterwards. But it is not a common occurrence. The biggest bait I use for smallies are LC pointer 128.
