  1. My brothers Border colie had puppies last week and I get one, so I can't wait till I can take her fishing! It will be a while though considering her eyes are still closed I'll try and get a pic later.

  3. Instead asking what is the "best" anything that tends to invites personal bias, try asking what line should I use for this application, saves time. Merky water, how far can you see a white Senko sink before it disappears? Let's say 3'. Bait casting reels most anglers like no less than 10 lb test line, 12 lb is a good average. Budget, premium monofilament, including co-polymers, are less expensive than fluorocarbon line and have better knot strength pound for pound. Any premium mono line brand in 10-12 lb test is good for your application. Tom

  7. The other week I was out with my buddy at a local park on the Upper Niagara. We were fishing from shore and we were targeting smallmouth, I has a dropshot rig tied on with a roboworm with an 8# leader off of 10# braid. It felt like I was snagged up, after a long cast with a 5/8 oz weight. I started to reel in for another cast and my line was about 30 yards out when it felt heavy and started to fight back. After a few seconds of fighting the muskie leaped in the air and I knew it was no bass! haha, Surprisingly, I got her to shore while my friend grabbed the small net that I had and got down to net her. I have no idea how my line was not cut and held up to the teeth. That was the first and only muskie I've caught and it was certainly a pleasant surprise, People in the park were walking over to me and asking about it afterwards! It was an awesome catch! It was by no means a monster muskie, but catching that using bass tackle is just one of the reasons I love the Niagara River!

  8. I pulled a 12" crappie out of the river a couple of days ago, above average size for the area. I turned to my wife and said, "I'm still the only one interested in eating these, right?" She replied that she was not going to eat that fish; that it was a "townie fish" lol. She then informed me that if I catch her a fish out of some pristine gin-clear Canadian (why Canadian? I dunno...) waters that she would gladly eat it. So you all are my witnesses; my wife just told me to take a fly-in pike trip for the good of the dinner table.

  13. Just in the past year have I started getting some legitimate rods and reels. Nothing top of the line, just some stuff that can suit a guy like me who is just getting into bass fishing on a more serious level. Its been a year or so in the works, figuring out what techniques I lean on, and what gear I need, and I have it down to four combos that suit me perfectly for right now. Left to right: 1. Quantum pt kinetic with 65lb power pro, on a 6'6 ugly stik gx2. I mostly use frogs on this rod, along with some heavier jigs. Really anything that I throw that is decently heavy. 2.Abu garcia promax combo, left hand retrieve, 7.1.1, 20lb pline, 7ft medium heavy. I use this rod mostly for texas rigs and my finess jigs. 3. Lews carbon fire, 7.1.1, 15lb p line, on a 7ft Duckett ghost cranking rod (medium). I use this for all of my crankbaits, popper and spooks. Anything I throw that has trebles is usually 3/8 ounce or smaller. 4. Abu garcia vengence spinning combo, 7ft medium. 10lb monofilament. I use this rod for small tubes and shakey heads mostly.

  14. The answer is it all depends. The further you crank the worse the bad effects will be. The bad effects include a worse ride and more wear and tear on your IFS components. These components include your ball joints, CV half shafts, and tie rods. The reason these wear faster is that the LCA and UCA are pushed down creating a bigger angle at which these components must operate at. All of these wear out faster when operated at a steeper angle. Therefore the further you lift your truck, the faster your will wear components and the worse it will ride. Also you might have heard of someone breaking a CV shaft or you might have even done it yourself. A CV shaft can operate at a certain angle before it binds. When it reaches its binding angle and power is applied (as in your in 4x4 and gas it) the force has to go somewhere, since the joint cant turn it blows up! This can happen even if your torsion bars aren’t adjusted way up by having your suspension at max drop and wheels turned very sharp. The catch is, adjusting your bars up makes it much easier to reach max drop since your already closer to it, and in turn makes it a lot easier to snap a CV. A-Jay

  16. Once I launch my boat I put on my PFD before stepping in the boat and my buddies do the same. It stays on until I step back on dry land. I know that even though I can swim if I fell overboard with all my clothes on I could easily drown. When you are on the water you are in a hostile environment because you can't walk on water and you can't breath under water. It is beautiful early in the morning out on a lake or a river, but it's still a hostile environment. Please everyone wear a PFD. Besides if you wear one then you will never fall overboard soaking everything in your wallet

  18. On one of the lakes I fish, there is only one submerged bridge and the creek bottom there is 22ft. It gets a lot of pressure with jigs and C-rigs, so I fish it with a Norman Thin N on a 1/2oz. Booyah Boo Rig. The fish rarely if ever, see a small crank that deep and I've left that old bridge with five or six nice keepers brought to my net on more than one occasion. I used to fish a crappie sized crank on a C-rig there, but with all the chunk rock , I'd get hung up on every third cast or so. The Boo Rig lets you keep the nose of the rig up out of harm's way and I've even run a Bomber Model A on a 2ft. leader behind one.

  20. So more bearings makes a better reel huh? I'll take a 6 ball bearing Shimano that they designed and developed, and manufactured from the ground up over a 10 ball bearing cookie cutter reel from Lews(that was designed and manufactured by Doyo) all day long.

  24. I just want to say thanks to all you guys. Ive read and read and read and while Ive fished on and off my whole life, I never went to the pond to catch "the one". I would stop and get some worms, load up the kids and throw the bobbers in and sit and wait it out. Then run back and forth getting all the bluegills off the lines and re-worming them for the kids. Well, I don't know what happened. I caught a few bass and then started buying more lures and most importantly, I googled and found 2 things that made it happen. This site and BassResource on youtube. I have scoured these forums and watched all of the videos and I have learned a ton. From Color selection to water temps to even how to fish a certain lure. I fished this farm pond yesterday that's old and all grown up. With the owners permission, I slid my boat in and started fishing at 8 am on the nose. I caught one baby bass and 2 nice crappie but at 11 am I had thrown everything I had. The water was medium to heavy stained (as all these farm ponds are) and about 2.5 acres. Water temp was 64. Deepest part was 9 feet. So at 11 am I had been throwing a 1/2 ounce black and blue Jig. Had a few nibbles but nothing concrete. Then, I remembered somebody saying " cast your jig, let it land in the shallows then let it set there long enough for the skirt to flare out and then give it 2 small, quick pulls. As I rolled up to the North side of the pond, it had heavy cover and lots of shade. The Sun was straight up and it was hot. I made one side arm cast in low under the tree limbs. My jig landed in about 3 inches of water. I let it set for about 3 seconds and gave it one small jerk which felt light. On the second jerk, it honestly felt like it was on a tree limb but there was no downed trees in there area so I said what the hey and set the hook. Immediately, the fish went nuts. He came toward the boat and I thought "this is gonna be a good one" and then as he got to the boat, he tried to go back under the trees and that's when I felt his wrath. I have never felt anything like that in my life. He was pulling the boat towards the bank!!! So I got him to the boat and he calmed down and I noticed that he was hooked good but I still couldn't focus but it was all too fast and at the same time, I couldn't believe what was happening! By way, He started pulling the star drag and so I turned it until he couldn't pull it. Probably a rookie mistake but I didn't want him to find a downed tree underwater. He didn't pull anymore drag (remember what I said about the drag for later). So buy the time I was ready to pull him up, I swear I had about 3 rods all tangled up from his thrashing so I literally threw my baitcaster to the bottom of the boat and wrapped the line around my hand about 3 times. I finally pulled this joker and and he was freaking huge! I could put my entire fist in his mouth! I took selfies, videos, measured him etc. and then I threw him back. I wanted to make sure he was out and back in quick. I had no scale. You guys can decide. When I got home, I found an unopened bag of 5 lb. Sugar and he was heavier than that but Who cares, he was 5 times bigger then any other bass Ive ever caught in my 42 years. As for that star drag story I told you to remember? After I pulled out to the middle of the pond and got my wheels back under me, I remembered about a big fight possibly setting off a biting frenzy so I trolled right back over, untangled my rods and re casted back in the same spot. And nothing. Once more, nothing. and then BOOM! another hit, same place but HARDER! remember that star drag? It was still locked all the way down. This next joker took off. He never came toward the boat and went straight left and down. My drag was peeling off so hard that the line was digging down into the spool and the drag was STILL spinning!!! Now I know all about fish lies but you guys have to believe me on this one. That fish snapped the line and I never saw him again. I untangled my spool, put about 20 more casts in there and nothing. I was exhausted and headed home. It was truly an Epic day so heres some pics! Thanks again to everyone! You guys rock! C

  37. UPDATE: We contacted him and talked to him on the phone for quite a while about it. Drove up to see it and test drive it the next day and the boat was in immaculate condition for the age. The boat has been kept in a garage since the day it was bought new and you can tell. We bought it and have taken it out twice already with no issues. Thanks for the replies everyone

  39. I believe he said hardbait...... At which point I would say lipless crankbait. If it's any bait then I'm gonna have to go spinnerbait.

  41. Where can I see these "swimbaits" you speak of? Man, don't buy into the "only Cali bass eat big baits." If you snoop around enough and pay attention, you'll see guys that have adopted the big bait mantra and have been at least partly successful with it.

  44. Carp like water temperatures above 60F for spawning usually. I use to specifcially target them in the fall with corn and nightcrawlers in ponds. It helps when you chum the waters to get a bunch actively feeding. I have even heard that carp might have a fall spawn too. This past weekend, I was fishing for bass on Silver Lake in western New York where the water tempertaure was around 46F. Hooked a few northern pike on the gold, red eye shad I was using and then got into this big common carp. 32 pounds plus! This carp took the lipless crankbait in its mouth - it wasn't snagged. There were a bunch rooting around feeding in the area that I saw moving to deeper water where I was casting it. If I was targeting carp intentionally - I wouldn't be using a crankbait!
