  1. I have served my country in the U.S Army and I consider myself to be very patriotic. I have used Shimano baitcasters since I was 12 or 13 years old (I am 45 now) and if a company started producing a baitcaster in America that really gave Shimano a run for their money, I doubt that I would change reels as long as Shimano continued doing what they are doing. I do love Zoom Baits and I have not bought a rod other than Loomis in a long time. It's about using what you like and can afford and personally, I don't feel that I am obligated to buy American just so that I can consider myself patriotic.

  3. I got skunked at the lake bass fishing so when I got back I said what the heck and went to a secluded pond that's behind my Nanas house, it's usually flooded and you have to wade to get to it but during the summer sometimes it's not like it was today. So I packed up my stuff and took the 4 wheeler to the spot to go catch some Bowfin. This pond/swamp carries some huge warmouth and Bowfin (pretty much the only fish in there) and since it rained a lot today after I left it might be flooded again by now.... Caught some good ones on everything thing from 10lb braid with roadrunners and marabou jigs to 50lb braid and cut-bait! Caught one pretty good sized one and lost another that was probably even bigger! It's sad that lots of people outright kill these when they catch them and call them trash fish, I'm glad I have this awesome little area all to myself that is practically untouched by anyone outside of my family. I love catching bowfin!

  8. The white perch in Maryland are closely related to white bass and striped bass. They're good eating. Not a true perch, though.

  10. I recently asked you guys about this rod size and action. Due to the llack of information online I did a review. There specific rod is a team daiwa t rod, 6'6" heavy, fast action. For the price this rod is excellent. I feel it is a bit heavy but balances well when paired with my lexa 100. The rod has ten guides that all were well aligned. This thing is more of an extra fast action! I fish off kayaks and float tubes and I have to say this size rod alows me to cast from these platforms much easier! For those of you that fish heavy cover from a low platform, I cannot describe how much more efficient this rod is when compared to a 7'6". I was able to nail a 5 lb bass and the rod is powerful.

  11. I know that this is a bass forum, but if I have a situation where that many carp are actively feeding, I'd be targeting the carp. They fight much harder than bass and are usually much bigger. It is not uncommon to see 20+ pound carp. Imagine the fun in fighting those fish!

  18. Nothing Crazy, the other day I catch this catfish with no real appreciation. Comes out its a yellow bullhead and the Maryland State record is only 3lb 7oz? Keep in mind I am wearing a size 12 boot in this picture which puts the cat around 16-18"...had a nice belly on it. Sure wish I had a scale last Friday! Made a report to DNR who let me know about the state record as well. Maybe I will go back and try to catch one bigger. Sure would be interesting to have a "State Record"!

  21. I don't know how many times I have fried up crappie, walleye, bass, bluegill at the same time and there has not been a person that can tell bass from the others when fried (fillets are cut to the same size for consistent frying.) A bluegill and bass from the same lake are going to taste the exact same, live in the same environment, consume much of the same species however bluegill will be spending more and eating more organisms that live in the weeds. Are you guys not taking the skin off your bass, because that is the only thing that would make them taste anything different from a slightly less mild flesh than that of a crappie. Best way to eat bass species however: Layer bacon bottom of cast iron pan and layer cut potatoes on top and cover with foil on grill. Last 10 minutes of cooking layer fish and additional spices/herbs on potatoes and cover until done. Yum.

  22. DX for all bottom contact baits. Depending on the quality of the Fury blank, either Fury or Savvy for moving baits. Savvy tapers are ideal for a lot of baits I throw i.e swim jigs/spinnerbaits/chatterbaits/swimbaits/frogs/etc Champ CB for cranks. The savvy are overpriced for what they are. Good 100$ rod. Not a good 180$ rod.

  23. Bass, unless from clean, cold water and of smaller size, taste awful, period. I grew up eating fish out of necessity, bass of all sizes included. Bass was by far one of the nastiest things I've had to eat, and I've eaten some nasty stuff. The bass I've eaten are extremely fishy tasting with a strong flavor of what I imagine moss would taste like mixed in. Frying them is about the only way I've ever had them and I've had them that way by my dad, mom, and both grandmas so it isn't just my imagination. I have no problem with someone who likes to eat them, but to say that someone doesn't know how to fry fish because they think a fish taste bad is ridiculous.

  25. Being a "patriotic American" also means supporting capitalism to it's core, which means free and open trade. Therefore restricting international trade wouldn't be very patriotic. I'm a big fan of Abu Garcia, Daiwa, and Rapala myself. I'm a super patriot.

  27. I like to use zoom super flukes when the bottom is scummy. You get the weightlessness of a soft plastic with the erratic action of a jerk/crankbait. You can also fish it a different depths and rig them weedless.

  28. You are just casting way to hard. I do the same thing myself and sometimes get a few loops and a occasional minor backlash but so does everyone. Really just this year I have backed my brakes off and for most things it is so much better to I think. All the reels that I use on a regular basis with centrifugal braking are Lews. All of them are either a Tourney or Tourney Pro. I always ran 2 pins on those reels and they cast pretty much anything "within reason" with 0 tension and 0 mags. You don't even have to thumb the spool again till the end usually. Now they are set to only 1 pin and I can cast just as far or farther then I did with 2 pins with just a little flick. `It seems cool to be whipping every cast no matter what the lure like KVD and hearing the reel scream but those brakes push so hard when you do that to try and slow it down. If you have say 4 out of 6 brakes on you can get the same distance and a lot smoother with 2 on by casting half as hard or actually less.

  29. I use rosco snaps and swivels for saltwater fishing, which are American made. Definitely quality stuff right there. I agree with you 100%. Afterall, we are still supporting businesses here regardless of where the product is made.

  31. Only four feet deep? If you want to get her away from live bait you could start her off with a 4in. Senko style worm. Nose hook it with a #4 circle hook and she'll have plenty of action, if you can keep the bluegill at bay.

  33. I've never eatin bass, but my dad's buddies say if you're going to eat them eat the smaller ones you catch because, the 2lb fish and up can be a little fishy. And it's also better for your lake/pond to take out some smaller fish to help produce monsters.

  35. My experience is bass are very wary and will usually not come right back for a second time. An exception would be if you get a good blow up on a top water bait and he misses come right back with a Sinko to the same spot. p.s. many salt water fish will

  37. i love catching them and really want to get one on my fly rod. I agree that people are just ignorant when it comes to certain species. I couldn't bring myself to kill a fish that has been around since the time of dinosaurs just because....nice looking fish too

  39. Fishing is clear water allows you to see bass you wouldn't otherwise when fishing in water with a few feet of water clarity. The bass were interested in the lures and followed them out of curuoisty, not necessarily hunting them. Why did you stop using the top lure? Mid day bass fishing usually means slowing down if the surface water is flat, you need some wave action or some ripple on the water surface with flashy lures. Next time try a drop or slip shot rigged 5" worm in Shad color like Roboworm bait-ball and drag it along the bottom. Tom PS, hope you have a 2 rod stamp on your license.

  43. I used to only be able to cast with one hand. Now when I do it I feel like I'm going to throw my rod and reel in the water. It isn't worth losing money to feel cooler by casting one handed in my opinion. Lol

  44. I've been at it for 40 yrs and I still backlash every day I fish. I had a few good ones my first day out this year but most are pretty minor. I see plenty of Pro's picking at their reels on occasion too. Just keep at it and you'll see positive results over time.
