  1. This is why companies are doing away with lifetime warranties. There are a lot of anglers that abuse their equipment and expect it to be replaced when it gets broken in a car window or stepped on and truth be told, why worry about high sticking or taking care of a rod if it is going to get replaced if it is broken. If I were you I'd go the route of honesty is the best policy, I'd email Abu Garcia and tell them what happened and ask them if there is anything they can do to help you out, they may just replace the rod, or perhaps they offer you one at a discounted rate, or they may not do anything and say it was just bad luck, sorry. No matter what they say or do, the one thing you can take away from it is that you were honest and that means you have integrity and nobody can take that away. The truth is that when you have a high end rod like a St. Croix Legend Extreme or a Loomis NRX, they will want you to send the rod in for inspection and they can tell if the break was due to crushing (that is what your break is) or some other form of abuse or if there was a blank defect . Abu Garcia isn't going to do that, they will probably tell you to cut the rod off where the model number is and send it back with return postage and they will replace the rod, but that is if you tell them you broke the rod on a hook set or some other fishing related incident, maybe even if you tell them the truth but I wouldn't lie about it just for a rod, trust me, tell them the truth and you may end up being without a rod but you'll feel better about yourself as a person.

  3. Pardon me for hijacking my own thread, but thank you for giving us all the drawbacks to a system that you've never been involved in. IF you can finish your schooling, perhaps you could spend a day honoring those who died giving you the opportunity to be wrong about so many things.

  5. Thought I would share a couple of nice smallmouth from the weekend. Both fish caught on jerk baits. Enjoy!

  6. Well, I'm working on my GED. All I have to do is take the practice test to make sure I'm ready for it and then I can take the tests. Also went to the doctor for my depression/anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Having to attend therapy, which I'm not happy about. I'm fixing to get prescribed meds for my depression, and possibly separate meds for anxiety. Planning to attend AGI courses (American Gunsmithing Institute). I still need to work on my license and a job, but I'm pretty stressed out right now already. Sorry for the pointless topic, just figured some of you may be interested.

  7. This past week, my wife and I went to Florida to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. It wasn't supposed to be a fishing trip, but after doing a little research I discovered that there were peacock bass potentially in the area, which is at the top of the list of fish I would like to catch. So after reaching out to the great members on the forum, I was able to get a few leads and was even loaned a couple rods, a reel, and some baits to try to catch them. The first day I tried for them in the Griffin Canal and the pond in Vista View Park. I was pretty much stabbing in the dark as I had no idea how to catch them or where to look for them at. I did see several Chiclids that acted catchable and once I found the right candidate I was able to land my first fish in Florida Didn't find anyone else willing to play in the canal so we relocated to the park pond. I was shocked how clear the water was, and there were bluegills and chiclids swimming everywhere. I lost a bass one of my first cast, then found a fish on a bed. I wish bass were as aggressive as this little guy was. Not much else going on but I did manage to get a couple really small bass, my first ones from Florida. I gave my report to a couple of the guys from the area and one of them gave me another suggestion of a park he said he used to catch peacocks at several years ago but wasn't sure if they were still there. It was closer than any other suggestions so the next day when my wife said I could go fishing for a couple hours we went straight there. This canal was very clear as well and right away I spotted a potential new species hiding on the edge of the weeds. He wasn't hard to convince to swipe at an Xrap. I actually caught several small bass pretty quickly, along with another gar, but there was a nearby overpass tunnel that was calling my name as I recalled reading that peacocks love bridges. My first cast under the bridge with the Xrap and there were wakes and boils seemingly coming from everywhere! There was at least 10 peacocks behind my bait, each taking their turn at the bait and each missing. It was agonizing being so close but not connecting. I quickly learned that if they missed the bait once, they wouldn't strike at the same bait again. Thankfully, one of the first few cast I made, I connected with a fish. Not a monster, but my first peacock, and I think it's obvious I was excited, I even lost a flip flop and didn't even realize it. I quickly started changing baits to try to catch another. There was one much larger than the rest who immediately became my target fish. he struck at almost everything, but didn't hook up on any of it. Their strike was much different than a largemouth, more like a very large and violent crappie bite if that makes sense. After several near misses, I finally hooked up with a STX Jr. They aren't lengthy fights, but they are extremely violent, especially the headshakes. After a few nervous moments and some indecision on how to grab this fish with 3 trebles in it's mouth, I managed to land my largest peacock of the trip. The commotion attracted some attention, and I was soon sharing the tunnel with another fisherman who was way more talkative than I really liked. So with that spot effectively squashed, I moved to the other side of the tunnel. There were more peas there, but they had a large school of bait corralled. The speed that they attacked was amazing, but also frustrating as they completely ignored everything I threw at them. I gave up on them momentarily and started tossing a Senko at the pencil reeds. As I was watching the peacock blitz, I forgot to pay attention to my line. I tried to move my Senko but was met with weight. Once I quickly realized what was happening I stuck a solid fish. The head said 6 pounder, but the skinny body didn't quite go 4. There were a couple other tunnels that I went and fished and managed one more pea before it was time to call it a night. 2 days later we met up with topwaterrob at Holiday Park to fish for largemouth in the Everglades. I was really excited about the chance to fish such a different body of water and the Glades did not disappoint. We started a little slow with me catching several dinks on a jerkbait and Rob getting one nice one on a jig. The action wasn't as fast as he liked so we made a run to another canal. It all looked the same to me, but something was different because for the rest of the time we were on the water we were getting a bite almost every cast. I caught a lot of little bass on a Pit Poss, then Rob switched to a frog and was getting blasted almost every cast, even though he was having a hard time hooking up. I made one cast to the edge of the weeds and my line was moving off when I lifted on it. The hookset I'm pretty sure bruised my ribs and I was sure I had a monster bass. The prehistoric looking fish that surfaced wasn't the big bass I hoped for, but I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the fight was wasn't disappointed to catch another shortly after that. The whole time we were there, alligators were everywhere, but never very interested in us unless there was a fish splashing around. This was one of the biggest ones we saw. He wasn't overly happy about us being in his territory either. All the action even got my wife's attention. She got brave enough to join in the action, so I gave her a Diesel Minnow and soon she had her first fish in the boat, which turned out to be an Oscar. A short while later, she hooked another fish almost at the boat. The profile was familiar, but the patterning was not. I knew she had a chain pickeral, her first and one more than I've ever caught. She was less than thrilled about the teeth, especially when they sliced through the braid that my pliers could barely cut like it was sewing thread. After 4 hours on the water, Rob had to head in because of previous commitments. It was probably the most fun I've had in a 4 hour trip on the water in a long time if not ever. The scenery, fishing, conversation, not to mention the boat ride were all terrific. The second to last day of our trip I had to make one more trip to the park that I'd caught my peacocks earlier in the week. This was more midday instead of late afternoon and the fishing was much more difficult. I caught a couple small bass, then a couple more chiclids. We worked back around to where I'd caught most of them the previous time and I was disappointed to find the tunnel all but vacant. I worked what had been the best spot for 20 minutes without even moving a fish so I crossed over to the opposite side where I'd caught my biggest bass. I spotted topwater action immediately and my first cast with an Xrap, I caught a fat largemouth. Several more smaller ones would follow on a Senko and Horny Toad along with a missed giant on the toad (like to have had another shot at that one). My wife was sitting under a palm tree when she announced that she had spotted 2 peacocks that appeared to be guarding a nest. I'm guessing by their aggressive behavior that she was right. I missed them both several times as they just rammed my bait instead of trying to eat it. After several cast I finally hooked up with the much smaller of the 2 fish and landed my fourth pea of the trip. As much as I would have liked to have tried to catch the bigger fish, I could sense my wife was ready to go and I felt it was fitting that my last fish from Florida be the fish that I had wanted to catch so badly. So we packed it up and I returned my borrowed gear. The whole trip was great but with a little help from some of the great forum members here, it was made into a trip I'll never forget!

  8. Just some anecdotal evidence about heavily fished waters in my neck of the woods. It used to bug me but now it doesnt. A lot of anglers you see out there have no idea what they are doing. They may catch a fish here and there but for the most part they are unsuccessful. The fish see a lot of crazy lures and crazy presentations and i believe they get accustomed to that aspect. What they dont see is well presented baits and this is where i think a great angler can shine. I have been noticeably better this year by keeping this in mind. Just because you see guys out there doesnt mean they're catching the fish.

  9. The frog bite was on this morning while it was raining. Biggest was 23.5" long with a 15" girth and a solid 8 lbs. If you look at the second pic of the big ones mouth, you can see where I ripped the frog out of her mouth on a hookset. She came back for it a couple seconds later. That NFC 709 and braid with the drag locked down is no joke. Lots of power. It definitely helped me winch both of these fish out of the lily pads. Caught a 5 lber as well and lost one that would have been around 5 lbs. Solid morning.

  10. That's interesting. I actually find the unbent blade to run the deepest (referring to natural running depth, not by increasing or decreasing speed, rod tip height, line size, ect.). It also had the least amount of vibration, but did hunt the most. The coffin style (original chatterbait), ran the shallowest, but everything else is spot on. The bent blade was what I found to be the best of all worlds with it's strong vibration, good hunting action, and how easy it was to adjust it's running depth. I'm sure the amount of bend, angle of the bend, distance from the end of the blade, split ring vs. no split ring, along with several other factors effect the action of the bait. Just shows how important experimenting can be in the fishing world

  11. Good for you taking the step and talking to someone. One very sad and unfortunate part about my line of work is I think a lot of guys feel like it's a sign of weakness to ask for help when your mind starts wandering to dark places, when in reality it should be a sign of strength. I've been around for too many co-workers who couldn't take it anymore and didn't ask for help. Hopefully you'll get the help you need to get yourself where you need to be.

  16. This is my biggest bass caught this year. I lost a DD at the bank later that day on a swimbait. That one really hurt. I also lost a big smallie this month but never got to see her. She felt like a real toad.

  19. My best Largemouth & Smallmouth so far (May 22, 2015) of 2015. LM: 6lb 10oz - 23'' (April 13, 2015) SM: 4lb 02oz - 19 & 1/2'' (May 21, 2015) As for the loss, I was fishing a buzzbait one evening and saw a huge surface strike near a dock, so I tossed the buzzbait around it with no results. I then changed to a Excalibur Spittin Image and after fishing with it for a few min a ~4-5lb Largemouth came up from the depths and nailed it... but sadly didn't get hooked up. WolfyBrandon

  20. You can also use a piece of nylon mono to jam a rubber band into the weight in a pinch and it wont cut your line. Take the nylon, thread it through and make a loop, then put a 1/4 piece of rubber band between the loop and pull snug. Good to go!

  21. I just got home from fishing. The team rod was outstanding. This is my first cranking specific rod. What a difference it makes. Caught 5 bass 2.5# was the biggest. Hook set was almost all rod. Never lost a fish. I did miss one hit.. My fault! I started with a square bill in a rocky area then moved to open water and threw a rattle trap.. Bam! A great day with an awesome rod. I want more of them... That sucks Grant..

  22. Don't do it...By jamming a toothpick into your weight, you are depressing the line and making a weak spot. Trust me on this. Use a bobber stop, a strand of plastic from a jig or spinnerbait, a piece of rubber that you insert into the weight and pull snug ( don't remember what it's called) Mike

  23. I generally only peg if I'm pitching into heavy cover. I haven't noticed any difference in the amount of bites I get one way or the other though.

  24. I guess I'm old-fashioned, but I don't like high-speed reels. I don't have slack out anyway, and prefer to fish jigs and plastics with the reel rather than the rod. A high-speed reel would probably do me more harm than good for the way I like to fish. For short-line situations, a high-speed reel might be useful; not to pick up slack but to get the bait back to you ASAP and make another cast if you're expecting to get bit either on the initial drop or soon thereafter.

  26. Went up to the lake for the second time this year. This time around we were lucky enough to slam em'! Started off pitching double tailed grubs hooked weedless, got a reaction bite by swimming them. Eventually my girlfriend cracked the pattern of the weekend though. Started throwing senkos and roboworms wacky rigged and the smallies ate it up.

  27. Oh no, my point was you're actually fishing with 20# line. Almost all lines are under-rated for strength. If you're happy with it, that's all that counts.

  29. Ya know guys...with the new rod builder introducing the custom series rods...(and the fact that the Lew's staff are completely in love with them) I'll bet the HM85's are going to be phased out. Wonder what's in store at the next iCast for the Team line? This could be your last chance to get these...keep that in mind if you're holding back reading this. Mine is the finest rod I've ever owned.

  37. It did look a little thick, but I gave it some practice cast in the yard and it seemed just fine. Came off evenly, it did not spring off the reel. I can't afford Tatsu, and really was looking to buy FC Sniper, but they didn't have any in store. I needed something I'm a pinch so I bought. I will definitely be sure to buy Sniper and try it, but on sale at 14.99 for 400 yards I can respool multiple times if needed, and I doubt I'll be too disappointed in ots performance.

  38. You are correct but there are members here who ask questions about trout rods and saltwater rods too. And knowing what you are looking for is a big help, you fit the casual angler profile and that is also a big help. Normally what you are looking for would be served by 3 rods, a finesse rod, a cranking rod and an all purpose rod but you need something that fits your budget and that is what is important. I think your best bet is an Abu Garcia Cardinal SX spinning reel with an Abu Garcia Vengence spinning rod in a length and power you are comfortable with. Go to Tackle Warehouse and look up the models as they sell both the reel and rod, the reel is $40 and the rod is $50 giving you a decent outfit for $90, about the best you will need.

  43. No need to be salty. Smalljaw was asking a perfectly legitimitate question. Too many times, new members come up and ask a extremely vague question that nobody has any idea how to answer. Back to the original question, the h20 ethos would be the best bet for a rod in the 50$ range. For the reel, I would get a pluefger Supreme MGX or President. If you can find the Supreme MGX on clearance jump on it, as it is a really good reel. I personally haven't used the President, but it gets rave reviews from the majority of people who have one. Overall, this setup should cost you around 99$ to 120$. Good Luck, Vince

  44. I enjoy the Major League Fishing format, The fish landing penalty for the fish hitting the deck shows me that the others who let the fish flop around do it because they can! No more fish are lost because you took a minute to ensure it wasn't abused.

  45. My opinion, If the major bass tournaments are going to preach "catch and release" (and pat themselves on the back for doing so) then they ought to be doing everything they can to release those bass in as healthy a condition as possible. Wouldn't hurt to show the professionals taking extra care of their fish so the general public can see and understand proper handling. If they are going to swing that bass around, jack and dislocate the jaw, that bass may swim away at release and then it will just die later. Might as well keep and consume those fish. The tidal potomac river, just south of me, probably hosts as many tournaments as any body of water. Unfortunately I see bad handling practices down there all too frequently. A bag of bass (with no water) lying on the blacktop in the heat of August waiting to be weighed and then "released". A tournament director "releasing" a bag of bass from 10 feet high into 6 inches of water (if he had walked 40 feet he could have released them at water level but apparently he did not feel the need). I'm sure most of the competitors take good care of their fish but their actions are not as evident to the casual observer. There is an opportunity for the televised pros to set and promote a good example here.

  47. +1 can't go wrong. Live shrimp, or matrix shad FTW!
    1 point
  48. South Louisiana born and raised checking in: You want to be fishing live shrimp right now. Depending on water depth, under a cork or on a carolina rig. My goto plastic is a Matrix Shad on a 1/4oz - 3/8oz jighead.... cast it... let it sink to the bottom.... pop the rod tip up to pop the bait off the bottom. Give it another couple of weeks and you should start throwing a live cockahoe minnow under a popping cork. Cast out. let it sit. pop the cork a cpl times. let it sit. pop the cork. sit. etc.... Any questions just ask... it's late so that is just my quick response.
