  1. This past week, my wife and I went to Florida to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. It wasn't supposed to be a fishing trip, but after doing a little research I discovered that there were peacock bass potentially in the area, which is at the top of the list of fish I would like to catch. So after reaching out to the great members on the forum, I was able to get a few leads and was even loaned a couple rods, a reel, and some baits to try to catch them. The first day I tried for them in the Griffin Canal and the pond in Vista View Park. I was pretty much stabbing in the dark as I had no idea how to catch them or where to look for them at. I did see several Chiclids that acted catchable and once I found the right candidate I was able to land my first fish in Florida Didn't find anyone else willing to play in the canal so we relocated to the park pond. I was shocked how clear the water was, and there were bluegills and chiclids swimming everywhere. I lost a bass one of my first cast, then found a fish on a bed. I wish bass were as aggressive as this little guy was. Not much else going on but I did manage to get a couple really small bass, my first ones from Florida. I gave my report to a couple of the guys from the area and one of them gave me another suggestion of a park he said he used to catch peacocks at several years ago but wasn't sure if they were still there. It was closer than any other suggestions so the next day when my wife said I could go fishing for a couple hours we went straight there. This canal was very clear as well and right away I spotted a potential new species hiding on the edge of the weeds. He wasn't hard to convince to swipe at an Xrap. I actually caught several small bass pretty quickly, along with another gar, but there was a nearby overpass tunnel that was calling my name as I recalled reading that peacocks love bridges. My first cast under the bridge with the Xrap and there were wakes and boils seemingly coming from everywhere! There was at least 10 peacocks behind my bait, each taking their turn at the bait and each missing. It was agonizing being so close but not connecting. I quickly learned that if they missed the bait once, they wouldn't strike at the same bait again. Thankfully, one of the first few cast I made, I connected with a fish. Not a monster, but my first peacock, and I think it's obvious I was excited, I even lost a flip flop and didn't even realize it. I quickly started changing baits to try to catch another. There was one much larger than the rest who immediately became my target fish. he struck at almost everything, but didn't hook up on any of it. Their strike was much different than a largemouth, more like a very large and violent crappie bite if that makes sense. After several near misses, I finally hooked up with a STX Jr. They aren't lengthy fights, but they are extremely violent, especially the headshakes. After a few nervous moments and some indecision on how to grab this fish with 3 trebles in it's mouth, I managed to land my largest peacock of the trip. The commotion attracted some attention, and I was soon sharing the tunnel with another fisherman who was way more talkative than I really liked. So with that spot effectively squashed, I moved to the other side of the tunnel. There were more peas there, but they had a large school of bait corralled. The speed that they attacked was amazing, but also frustrating as they completely ignored everything I threw at them. I gave up on them momentarily and started tossing a Senko at the pencil reeds. As I was watching the peacock blitz, I forgot to pay attention to my line. I tried to move my Senko but was met with weight. Once I quickly realized what was happening I stuck a solid fish. The head said 6 pounder, but the skinny body didn't quite go 4. There were a couple other tunnels that I went and fished and managed one more pea before it was time to call it a night. 2 days later we met up with topwaterrob at Holiday Park to fish for largemouth in the Everglades. I was really excited about the chance to fish such a different body of water and the Glades did not disappoint. We started a little slow with me catching several dinks on a jerkbait and Rob getting one nice one on a jig. The action wasn't as fast as he liked so we made a run to another canal. It all looked the same to me, but something was different because for the rest of the time we were on the water we were getting a bite almost every cast. I caught a lot of little bass on a Pit Poss, then Rob switched to a frog and was getting blasted almost every cast, even though he was having a hard time hooking up. I made one cast to the edge of the weeds and my line was moving off when I lifted on it. The hookset I'm pretty sure bruised my ribs and I was sure I had a monster bass. The prehistoric looking fish that surfaced wasn't the big bass I hoped for, but I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed the fight was wasn't disappointed to catch another shortly after that. The whole time we were there, alligators were everywhere, but never very interested in us unless there was a fish splashing around. This was one of the biggest ones we saw. He wasn't overly happy about us being in his territory either. All the action even got my wife's attention. She got brave enough to join in the action, so I gave her a Diesel Minnow and soon she had her first fish in the boat, which turned out to be an Oscar. A short while later, she hooked another fish almost at the boat. The profile was familiar, but the patterning was not. I knew she had a chain pickeral, her first and one more than I've ever caught. She was less than thrilled about the teeth, especially when they sliced through the braid that my pliers could barely cut like it was sewing thread. After 4 hours on the water, Rob had to head in because of previous commitments. It was probably the most fun I've had in a 4 hour trip on the water in a long time if not ever. The scenery, fishing, conversation, not to mention the boat ride were all terrific. The second to last day of our trip I had to make one more trip to the park that I'd caught my peacocks earlier in the week. This was more midday instead of late afternoon and the fishing was much more difficult. I caught a couple small bass, then a couple more chiclids. We worked back around to where I'd caught most of them the previous time and I was disappointed to find the tunnel all but vacant. I worked what had been the best spot for 20 minutes without even moving a fish so I crossed over to the opposite side where I'd caught my biggest bass. I spotted topwater action immediately and my first cast with an Xrap, I caught a fat largemouth. Several more smaller ones would follow on a Senko and Horny Toad along with a missed giant on the toad (like to have had another shot at that one). My wife was sitting under a palm tree when she announced that she had spotted 2 peacocks that appeared to be guarding a nest. I'm guessing by their aggressive behavior that she was right. I missed them both several times as they just rammed my bait instead of trying to eat it. After several cast I finally hooked up with the much smaller of the 2 fish and landed my fourth pea of the trip. As much as I would have liked to have tried to catch the bigger fish, I could sense my wife was ready to go and I felt it was fitting that my last fish from Florida be the fish that I had wanted to catch so badly. So we packed it up and I returned my borrowed gear. The whole trip was great but with a little help from some of the great forum members here, it was made into a trip I'll never forget!

  3. This is my biggest bass caught this year. I lost a DD at the bank later that day on a swimbait. That one really hurt. I also lost a big smallie this month but never got to see her. She felt like a real toad.

  4. My largest fish so far this year is a smallie! And that makes me very happy! 5lbs 13oz Jeff

  5. Went up to the lake for the second time this year. This time around we were lucky enough to slam em'! Started off pitching double tailed grubs hooked weedless, got a reaction bite by swimming them. Eventually my girlfriend cracked the pattern of the weekend though. Started throwing senkos and roboworms wacky rigged and the smallies ate it up.

  6. Pardon me for hijacking my own thread, but thank you for giving us all the drawbacks to a system that you've never been involved in. IF you can finish your schooling, perhaps you could spend a day honoring those who died giving you the opportunity to be wrong about so many things.

  7. The frog bite was on this morning while it was raining. Biggest was 23.5" long with a 15" girth and a solid 8 lbs. If you look at the second pic of the big ones mouth, you can see where I ripped the frog out of her mouth on a hookset. She came back for it a couple seconds later. That NFC 709 and braid with the drag locked down is no joke. Lots of power. It definitely helped me winch both of these fish out of the lily pads. Caught a 5 lber as well and lost one that would have been around 5 lbs. Solid morning.

  12. Biggest bass this year was this 6.5 pounder caught on Okeechobee and the biggest fish I lost this year was on Okee and would have been a PB for sure she looked around 8pounds... My biggest NH bass this year is between 3 and 3.5lbs which will soon be shattered since my lacrosse season has finally wound down.

  16. Jakob, did you run the line through KVD's Lure and Line Conditioner when spooling? You get a washcloth and spray a "wet spot" on the cloth and run the line through this wet spot when spooling. Did you go out side and tie the line to a post and then back the line off the reel by walking away from the post, stopping and with the drag tight stretch it for about thirty seconds five or six times, holding the line in the stretch position for about 20 to 30 seconds each time? Did you go back to the post and untie the line and then reel it tight back onto the spool? One other thing to consider. Try to find someone at the tackle shop who is not a dummy and knows who makes the line for Gander Mountain. I know BPS has Seaguar produce their line and it performs very well. Almost as good as Yo-Zuri. You know that when your line test goes over 12-pounds it can get to be a little "wirey" as you say. But don't give up on it. You should have good results as the other normal people in Indiana are watching the Indy 500 and you are out fishing. Let us know what happens. Good luck on your upcoming fishing adventure. Be safe.

  17. The bass may be a female which means it can be more picky than a male when it comes to feeding. May I make these suggestions: 1. Stay out of her sight. If you can see her she can see/feel you. 2. Using the flipping and pitching method rig up a 1/8 jig head with a three inch heavy hook and add a Zoom Junebug trick worm for bait. 3. Slather the Junebug trick worm with MegaStrike. 4. When you see her or just fishing the bank have the bait make a splash for a few casts and then cast it so that it enters the water very quietly. 5. Let the trick worm just sit there for at least 60 seconds - an eternity in bass fishing. 6. Wiggle rod tip a little but let trick worm sit there. 7. After letting worm sit for 60-seconds and then giving it a wiggle, start to move is very slowly. 8. If this does not produce any interest or bites get a shotgun and ................... Oops. Number 8 is for guys living in Louisiana. Remember, bass are inquisitive animals and your bass should show some interest in your bait. If she does not want Junebug, try green pumpkin. Then watermelon. How about watermelon candy? Pink? White? Neon green? And you can throw the bait weightless, too. Add to your list of baits the Mag II trick worm and give it a shot. As for the Senko, do the same as above but fish it unweighted wacky rigged. Move it up and down so it flies like a bird in the water. You can add a touch of yellow dye (JJ's Magic) to the tips of the Senko to try to entice her to hit it. Sooner or later she will hit your bait. Or go back to your house and get that shotgun!!!

  18. My best Largemouth & Smallmouth so far (May 22, 2015) of 2015. LM: 6lb 10oz - 23'' (April 13, 2015) SM: 4lb 02oz - 19 & 1/2'' (May 21, 2015) As for the loss, I was fishing a buzzbait one evening and saw a huge surface strike near a dock, so I tossed the buzzbait around it with no results. I then changed to a Excalibur Spittin Image and after fishing with it for a few min a ~4-5lb Largemouth came up from the depths and nailed it... but sadly didn't get hooked up. WolfyBrandon

In general, fisheries management applies to both large bodies of water (example would be oceans) as well as smaller private ponds. More forage = bigger fish or More forage = more fish. Example 1. A family of 5 eating enough food for a family of 10. There will be 5 overweight people. Exampe 2. A family of 10 eating food for a family of 5. Enough to stay alive but 10 very underfed people. Example 3. A family of 10 eating enough food for a family of 10. 10 average sized people. Slot limits are a fantastic option for creating a healthy population of fish as well as promotes trophy size fish.

  23. What I've been told is that younger (dinks) fish have a voracious appetite and will eat basically like teenagers keeping some of the bigger fish from the forage. Now in some cases those same dinks are the forage for really big fish sooo. who knows

  26. Flouro can be amazingly fragile after digging out a backlash. It hardly takes anything to damage it. I'm about to give up on flouro for this reason. It backlashes more than mono or braid, it is easily damaged in removing the backlash, and other advantages just don't justify the problems with it.

  31. It's likely that you had it spooked from it seeing you. More often than not, if you can see them, they've spotted you too. They get a little tight lipped when that happens if they don't just swim off in general. I've been fishing from shore a lot lately, and I've noticed its easy to get a fish that just cruised in to bite, especially if I had already casted and I just have to work the bait to it. The less you move, the better. Wear clothes that somewhat blend in with your background. I don't go crazy, but fishing behind my complex, I've been wearing green or brown shirts with dark jeans. I stand infront of a larger bush or tree trunk to keep my silhouette from standing out. It all might seem ridiculous, but I've had much better luck somewhat concealing myself than just standing out in the open.

  36. I appreciate everyone's comments so far.......I mean I kinda knew it wasn'tt user(my) error in casting and I maybe thought it was a nick in my guides or reel, but I think it's gotta be an issue with the flouro pinching down and weakness if I get a backlash........you all have been very helpful and I thank you!!!...FISH ON GUYS!!!! I got this bruiser 2 weeks ago on a LC deep diving jerkbait here in NJ......

  43. On state controlled waters you are probably OK. On county forest preserve lakes, you need to check the regs. Some lakes don't allow any boats or you can only use one of their rentals.

  44. I got mine today also, a medium light, fast action spinning rod and I am super happy as I got a remarkable deal. The rod is very light and seems well made, K-series guides and they line up perfectly and the finish is exceptional as there is no sloppy epoxy work. What really makes me happy is the blank itself, it feels very responsive with a nice crisp action, this was an absolute steal!!!!
