  2. New, old…not a darn person will know about them if no one posts about it. Seriously guys, what is it that you think these forums are for, keeping secrets because you already know it all? Either help a guy out and contribute, or move on if your above the thread content. Remember, for every person that posts, there are untold numbers that do not.

  4. This past winter I bought a Garmin Virb Elite, finally joining everyone that films their trips on the water. I'm not very tech savvy so there's been a lot of trial and error (mostly error), trying to figure out how to properly film everything and editing the videos. My first few attempts were from the bottom of the boat where not much could be seen. I recently bought a suction cup mount and moved the camera to my boat's windshield and it helped a lot with being able to see what was going on and even seeing some of the strikes. I probably need to get a microphone for it next. Some of the on the water commentary and shenanigans that go on in my boat are probably more entertaining than the actual fishing There's a couple pretty good examples of that in this video.

  6. Don't think for a moment this was an isolated incident. This is just the one where they got caught. This calls into question their entire season. Unfortunately, you can't put all the blame on the Pats. The NFL is notoriously bad about enforcing it's own rules and selectively applying them ad hoc. It's no surprise teams with no integrity or values are taking advantage of the situation.

  8. Hmmmmm.. lotsa questions in there. No. Fishing pressure will not completely kill the bite. It will influence it though. If you know how to fish, you can work around it. Best advice, beyond your re-visiting this question in a few years, is to take advantage of low visibility sky and water conditions -clouds, chop, turbidity, cover. Also, learn about speed control as this can matter a lot and will vary with conditions and fish mood (and season). Then add versatility. Hey, it takes time. Enjoy the journey.

  9. Couple years ago, I was at a shopping mall near here and saw a teenager with the baggy pants half way hanging off his arse trip and fall into one of his friends. It was funny, but what was even funnier was his friend also had low slung pants and his pants fell down to his ankles when the other guy fell into him. One face planted into the floor and bloodied his nose and the other guy landed kind of on top of him. A lot of people chuckled and kept walking, but I had to stop and sit down because I was laughing so hard and loud it was almost embarrassing... almost. The kids got ticked because I was laughing at them but I didn't care... Still brings a smile to my face every time I see a kid with his pants like that.

  10. Yeah you're right, let's see the inland buoy tender I was on had a water blistering speed of 7 knots, good ol' USCGC Blackberry. But not all were that slow, ever stationed in the 7th district?? We had confiscated cigarette boats, but not even our go fasts went that fast tho, but helos. That's the ticket for this, just call in air support. A dolphin sweeping in and hovering in their path usually did the trick. I loved the resources we had there, it was so different from the rest of my career. That was the Reagan/Bush era and the start of the zero tolerance policy that the press coined the war on drugs.

  18. Tubes are made 2 different ways, most big companies, not all but most, have injection molds to make the tubes. Other companies, most small manufacturers but a few big ones as well "hand dip" their tubes, the way this is done is the plastic is in a large pot that is heated and then a series of stainless steel rods is dipped into the plastic and then pulled out. When the rod is removed, a layer of plastic sticks to the rod and then dipped again and then you have what is called a "double dipped" tube which has a thicker wall ad is more durable. Most hand dipped tubes are slightly hard because it makes it easy to split the tails, if it is too soft the plastic will tear but River Rock has a way of doing it while keeping the tubes super soft. For the smallmouth I fish for, they see tubes all the time and they spit them quick so having a soft tube is critical, most of the guides I know are using River Rock, that is how I learned of them. An internal jig is a jig head that is tapered to slide up inside of a tube and then it is fished with the hook point exposed. The "Stupid" style is rigging a tube with an internal jig weedless, there are videos on rigging a "stupid tube" . The reason for this is because a Texas rigged tube doesn't have the same action as a tube fished with an internal jig but you can fish the internal jig in the same places as a Texas rigged tube so someone figured out how to rig an internal style jig weedless so you can fish it in the same places as a Texas rig but it still keeps the action of a tube rigged with an internal or insider jig head.

  20. It's a rare day on the water that our Golden isn't in the boat with me. Last night was one of those nights, she'll still be pouting about that until we go next. I got home and not sure I've ever seen eyes look that sad. She's been going with me since she was just a puppy. Now she's a seasoned vet with 2 years on the water to her credit. She's super laid back on the boat, big fish are the only thing she gets excited about. Little fish rarely get more than a passing sniff.

  24. The issue is apparently the costs of growing gametes. Undernourished bass must obtain the nutrition (fats in particular) to have gametes mature. Fish that come into, and make it through, winter in good condition tend to spawn first (which may not mean early but on time). These may not always be the biggest individuals in the lake, but those in best condition. Often big fish are the ones in best condition though. What is notable is that the latest spawners tend to be the real little ones -when more 10inchers show up to give it a shot. At these late dates some larger females may still be around still willing to spawn though. Then there's the issue of accurate sampling. It can be hard to tell what is actually happening out there especially with limited observations (fishing only on weekends say). This is not an attack in any way, as I hold myself to the same standard. It's just darn hard to be there seeing enough to have an accurate description of things in nature, especially those occurring underwater. I'm going on what the biology literature describes. It's certainly possible that your water has some large fish spawning later, and/or "smaller" ones spawning early. It's just not the usual thing according to the literature. And we don't actually know the condition factors of those groups of fish. Hope this helps.

  25. Many years ago, Skip Bertman, who was the manager of the USA's Olympic baseball team, brought the team to The Diamond in Richmond for a pre-Olympic baseball game against Japan. I dragged my wife to the ball park to watch the game, go on the field to say hello to Skip, and listen to her complain as she was ticked off as it was too hot to watch anything outside. During the game the Olympic mascot was ushered by its assistant down the stairs and into an area behind the first base dugout to turn around and stand and waive at the crowd. Of course this attracted many young kids who wanted to go and stand or touch the mascot. The only problem was that the place the mascot was standing was directly in my line of sight to home plate so I could not see the Japanese batter. Then it happened. The Japanese batter hit a screaming line drive into the back of the Olympic mascot. There was loud "thud" as the mascot heaved forward. And the kids standing around him yelled and screamed and ran in panic up the stairs and back to their parents. The mascot was staggering and the usher had no idea what had happened. Well, I went into hysterics. It was funny hearing the foul ball thud into the mascot's back; seeing the kids yell in horror and run in panic; the Mascot reel around in pain; and the usher not knowing what was going on. The usher assisted the mascot up the stairs and out of sight and he never returned. I still laugh about it to this day and my wife still thinks it was not that funny. But at the time it was the funniest thing I had seen in years and it still brings happy memories back to me when I think of it.

  27. I thought you made good points in your thread...Loook at all the responses you received..I would say you made some good points, and was well written, If people never experiment and share there results then fishing never makes the next leap forward....For every idea you think is good, someone else who is also a good angler will always disagree with you, that is what makes fishihg so good, you never know when and where and often I learn more from a person I take fishing for his first time than I do from someone who is reading the same magazines I am...Not having any expectations except catching fish makes new fisherman successful many times no matter what you give them, even a pink worm and blue hook.

  29. :respect-059: :respect-059: POST OF THE DAY ~ YOU WIN THE INTERNET TODAY ! FLYFISHER - THIS LINK IS FOR YOU - (I only wish I had posted it.) Ex-Eagles and retired Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Blake confessed in an interview that removing air from footballs was common when he played in the NFL from 1992-2005. "I'm just going to let the cat of the bag, every team does it, every game, it has been since I played," the ex-Eagles QB said Wednesday in a radio interview on the "Midday 180" show on Nashville's 104.5 The Zone. "Cause when you take the balls out of the bag, they are rock hard. And you can't feel the ball as well. It's too hard. "Everybody puts the pin in and takes just enough air out of the ball that you can feel it a little better. But it's not the point to where it's flat. So I don't know what the big deal is. It's not something that's not been done for 20 years." Blake says that he'd order ball boys to let air out of his footballs just before the start of games during his entire NFL career, which included time with the Eagles in 2004. A-Jay

  30. So a team that is notorious for cheating was unfairly treated because people were looking for reasons to see if they were cheating when in reality they were cheating? lol, ok. Was JAX doing this or others? Who knows..Call Tom Wells if you think the Patriots were singled out. As said before, they were questioned about doing this earlier in the season and nothing was done about. They were then stupid enough to do it again vs the same team.

  34. I think you make a good argument A-Jay. I disagree that there are no lessons to be learned from sports. You learned many of the important life lessons from people of integrity and honor. There are many who are not so fortunate though. Like it or not, our sports heroes and teams are an example to many of how real life is played. I don't think you can say it is just a game when there are so many who look to sports for life lessons. When there is no integrity in professional sports it does have consequences. The NFL and professional sports in general have a greater responsibility for more than just entertainment IMO.

  38. A-Jay I agree with the central idea of the above article. The NFL can't talk about integrity while not doing anything about it. If the "integrity of the game" is a meaningless phrase in professional sports, where winning and money are all that matters, it is a sad indictment of all involved. That includes those of us who blindly root for our teams with little regard for the bigger picture.

  39. First Off - as a Pats fan - this is much easier to deal with having won another title - Secondly – Most of what is written below came from Anno Catuli’s article about MLB. But after by replacing “MLB’ with “NFL” in the text, I believe this to have value. If the NFL really cared about the “integrity of the game”, they would kick everyone who ever cheated, took drugs, murdered people, used substances that are now banned (regardless of if they were legal at the time) or not out of the HOF. If the NFL really cared about the “integrity of the game” as many claim, they would actually take a very strict policy on the steroid issue. I do not care where you stand on whether or not steroids help, or should be banned, if the NFL really wanted to “clean up the game” they would start by issuing a one and done PED drug testing policy. You get caught once, you are done. The time has come to stop throwing around the empty phrase “integrity of the game” because there is no “integrity of the game”. All teams, players, owners care about is money; cold hard cash is what makes these decisions. Not integrity. This is not really about The New England Patriots, The Owner, Coach or the QB at all, but that empty phrase “integrity of the game”. The Patriots are just a convenient launching pad for people to use & pound the “integrity of the game” line. The NFL has lacked integrity since d**n near the beginning, and the NFL Hall of Fame is loaded with people who lack credibility. In my humble opinion, the NFL has two options. Put up, or shut up. Either stop talking about how much you supposedly care about the “integrity of the game” or actually do something that proves that you care. A-Jay

  41. I use the marine batteries from Wal Mart, Everstart I have had good luck with them and they are reasonable. make sure it is a deep cycle battery. I would guess a marine battery from a farm and fleet, menards or whatever you have down there would be fine. just make sure you put a low charge on them as soon as you are done for the day and you should get a good life out of it.

  42. No actually I strap mine down on the roof of my truck. The battery, trolling motor and trolling motor mount and Rod holders are all removable. It can be put on in less than 5 mins when I get to the lake. Very easy to transport and light and still a totally normal canoe if I'd like it to be.

Good post, nothing new, but it inspired good conversation and put it in front of eyes that may not have any info on senkos. FYI, you've gotta start skip casting things!

  45. Don't let anybody tell you that catching fish in a pond is as easy as catching fish from a barrel. My favorite pond is a small neighborhood body of water that recieves a ton of pressure. When you have a pond that small, and everybody fishes it, it's tough to catch fish sometimes. What if the fish in that barrel don't want to bite? Kinda hard to catch them. Through a friend there at the pond who has figured them out, I have learned a lot about the fish in that pond and can usually catch them every time out. Senkos and some of the tricks I talked about helped me do that.

  47. Two things. I watched Dean Rojas skip a frog all over Oneida When he didn't need to. When asked about it, he said the skip was part of the presentation. Hmmm, I now skip cast every time with a senko. Pete Gluzik showed us how a 6-7" senko would do all sorts of crazy stuff when fished Texas style with a pegged 1/16th bullet weight. He also skips them every time. Something about the entry and the weight makes the bait do loopy loops.
