  2. Stop fishing shallow - forget those fish. Especially since you didn't use any words like "Big" or "Huge" when you described them. Instead concentrate your efforts away from the bank. Try doing both sides of points and as close to the ends as you can reach. Look for drops and places where there is a change in the type of cover. The first break off the bank that's in front of or close to some cover often holds a few as well. And if you can swing it - night ops often changes the game you're playing quite a bit - and usually in your favor. Good Luck. A-Jay

  4. if I understand correctly.. he would like to see less of an attitude from some guys when the topic has been asked/discussed many time before. just a helpful point in the right direction/to a previous post would be nice. there are many new members that aren't trying to rankle any feathers. they have a question and they ask. I realize they could "search", but I also realize that there aren't too many questions and/or topic that haven't already been covered here, many times. so, cut them some slack. and offer help...whether it be by answering the question, give advice, or refer to another post. if you don't want to answer that question for the upteenth time...don't. but don't rant at the guy either.

  5. I clicked to like a post and couldn't. It said I had reached my quota of likes for the day. I have never done that, and actually wasn't aware that you could. Anytime I start a topic, I will click like on every response, even if it is contrary to what I posted. I do that to acknowledge that I did read your post. I read every response to every topic that I post. So if you reply to a topic that I started and you don't get a like, it's because I have used them all up. I certainly appreciate all your responses. 6. I was lucky enough to have yesterday off so naturally I went fishing. This coming weekend I have to work. So decided to take my mom out fishing with me as way to make up for not being able to see her for mothers day. We got a late start to the day. It was very warm in the 70s and maybe even the low 80s. It was mostly sunny with a southwest wind 5- 10 with gusts to 15 mph. The water temperature in the shallows was surprisingly warm, at one point I saw 60 degrees. The plan was to fish flooded trees. After we launched it took over an hour to get to our first spot. It sure was worth the long haul. Second cast resulted in a 4-8 largemouth on my jig. Over the next two or three hours the fishing was unbelievable. Both my mom and I were catching some very large bass. She was catching them using a rubber worm and I was using a jig. It ended up being one of the best days I have had weight wise. We were not able to stay the rest of the day. My mom can only fish for about 4 or 5 hours at a time. Regardless it was an absolutely amazing day. The 5 biggest bass weighed in at 29 lbs 15 oz. the fish bass limit was made up of a 6-9, 5-10, 5-7, a 4-8 with a 7-13 lunker. I lost another big fish I would guess to be atleast 6 lbs. We ended up catching 23 bass between the two of us. It was am amazing day. Big bass are biting. 7-13 6-9

  10. Just remember the rod plays a large role in the picture. It needs to be able to load properly with light baits. The pixy will do its job though.

  11. Very rarely that fish will strike again unless it is very aggressive. However it is definitely worth some more casts in that spot as there could be other fish excited by the commotion.

  13. It was tough fishing, but we still caught a good number of fish. Long weekend and I'm still trying to recover after getting about 7 hours of sleep all weekend. First fish of the weekend, on a spook. Struggled the rest of the first day. Neither Chris or I ever caught a striper, and had a hard time finding anything decent sized. Chris caught this one at the end of the first day on Ned. He was trying to hook one of the hundreds of gar that were surfacing and accidentally got this Saturday we moved down to the dam. We got about a mile from the ramp and Chris' motor started acting funny. Not sure what was wrong yet but the short version of the story is that we were without an outboard and had to be towed back to the ramp at about noon. In between that we finally found some fish despite about 15-16 feet of visiblity. Some of the clearest water I've ever seen except for Lake Tahoe. First fish on a tube 2 lb 8 oz Then we found a bank with a flat and some really nice rocks on it and proceeded to pick up several decent smallie Biggest smallie of the trip for me on Ned 3lb 1 oz Sunday we took off from the cabin and drove to the strip pits. I only caught one but it was a decent 2 1/2 pounder on a pink bladed jig Clayton had big fish on the day. He may correct me but I think it went right around 4 pounds.

  20. The handful of retention ponds I fish in my neighborhood sound VERY similar to your situation. I can't name all the things Iv caught bass on in them, but the major top producers for me are jigs, spook and buzzbait. Right on the banks. All sizes of fish. You'd be surprised at the number of quality fish that hug the banks. As far as jigging, all I use in these ponds is a 5/16 oz black/blue with Rage chunk. Don't let the smaller size fool you either. Plenty of 3-4 pound fish come from that thing. Work the banks with t-rigs and jigs. Square bills, top water lures. Open water with a 1/4 oz. Lipless crank. Just find the baitfish. If you see bass popping a school in open water, run through them. Def fish drains if any are available, ESPECIALLY after a good rain if the water is running. A lot of times bass will hang out waiting on an easy meal to wash by. Any kind of cover at all is good. Cat tails on the bank, a small grass line, anything.

  21. It would seem to me that some on here prefer bad manners and smart butt responses over common decency. I find that distasteful. Edit: Hoosierbass007, the above Is most certainly not directed at you. Why Is It so difficult for some to simply not respond to a topic If It bothers them so much?

  27. Here's some information that may make some folks excited, I know it does for me. There is only one thing I am not sure about, but I had though that in the past they had trailered boats at a ramp and then drove the fish/boats over to an arena or auditorium to weigh the fish. Now, I am being very optimistic here, but I will admit I would absolutely love to see a classic out here. I know the West Coast has earned a bad reputation with some people and I certainly don't blame them. One thing is for sure, some fans out here really, really, really love bass fishing. One thing that is happening in Sacramento is we are getting a new sports arena for our Kings franchise, which will be located in downtown Sacramento right off of I5 our major interstate through the entire state. Now, I would NOT want to see them go out of Sacramento again. To me I was honestly a bit scared for the safety of these guys, I know they're beyond experienced drivers but I heard a few horror stories of killswitches coming off and guys almost going out of the boat from unexpected wakes and what not. What we have is about 45 minutes away, a large launch ramp where we could launch the boats and possibly (once again in a perfect world) trailer them back to Sacramento's arena. Just thinking out loud here but that's some "local" info that may change some minds or get others more excited! I know I would be!

  29. You make a good point. I always tell guys to read the tourney standings from last place up, not from the top down. Everyone focuses on who won, and the media loves to spotlight a winner, but if you start at the bottom, sooner or later you'll see every angler, including the big name "favorites," right down on the bottom and not even close to being in contention. Lots of guys beat themselves up when they have a tough day, but that's fishing. Nobody catches them all the time, even the best in the world. -T9

  31. I don't think you should fish humps while you're mourning. That could bum you out, and you probably not get all the positive energy you should out of the fishing experience. I'd just go ahead and mourn. Mourn all you want, or as much as you feel is necessary, whichever comes first. Get your head straight, or as straight as feels comfortable for you. Then, the morning after you are done mourning, go fish all the humps you want. I'm just glad that I could help in this situation. Genuine, deep counseling is never easy.

  34. The biggest laugh I had was watching my granddaughter. Back when she was about 9 or 10, she was not that good of a swimmer and all her cousins were in the deep end of the pool. She jumped out of the pool, went to the boat shed and got her a life vest out of the boat. She got her auto inflate because that's what I always made her wear when in the boat, but she never really knew how it worked. She just thought it was a thin, lightweight life jacket. Well, she snaps it on, goes running and jumps into the deep end, It inflated quicker than a cars airbag and scared the total crap out of her. She's screaming and hollering and I'm laughing my butt off. It was worth every penny of that arming kit just to see that one.

  35. Don't tell my creditors please, but this season I'll be fishing Seaguar Tatsu. I first learned about this superior stuff from RichZ's September 7, 2009 Bass Blog in which he said, "Seaguar just announced the release in the USA of Tatsu. I don't know what it will cost. But from an end results/fish in the boat standpoint, it doesn't matter." High praise indeed from a well respected bassmaster. The product description on ***.com reads as follows: "Like the flexible, lithe, and armored scales of a dragon (tatsu means dragon in Japanese), Seaguar Tatsu Fluorocarbon has a tough, but soft exterior, which hides incomparable inner strength." This really fired my imagination. Would I like to battle bruiser smallies with a dragon protecting my presentation? Of course. Would I care to spend $36.99 for 200 yards of reptilian ruggedness? Uh, no. How about on sale for $26.39? That I could rationalize - barely. With guilt I clicked on add to cart for a spool of 6 lb. And, hand to forehead, a spool of 8. Well hey, let's go fishing. The day started cool and gray with Quabbin's surface mostly unruffled. I had the pleasure of fishing with Bassmaster Brad again who is both a gentleman and a very savvy smallie guy. We spent the morning fishing Brad's spots which you can access from either Gate 43 or Gate 31. Brad, using a Silver Buddy was having a multi-species morning featuring smallies, lakers and Yup. That is a landlocked salmon. I too had been throwing a blade bait but neither the fish nor I were getting good vibrations. Hmph. Can't say that Brad was front ending me (not that he would under any circumstances) because we were fishing flats offshore mainly, working 10' - 20' depths. I decided to try one of the baits I pour, paint and dress. I liked the looks of this jig head from the 3/16 oz. cavity of Do-It's Tapered Tube jig mold. To fish legally in Massachusetts I used the 281 alloy from rotometals.com which is 58% bismuth and 42% tin and weighs about 25% less than lead. It's dressed with bucktail and a few strands of pearl Krystal Flash. And I'll tell ya, with that Z-Man Elaztech Split Tail Trailer, it sure looked sexy undulating through the water. Here's a bass that thought so too: This fish came unexpectedly. I had switched my rod to my left hand so I could grab the net and hand it to Brad. While doing this, the rod came to life. So now I know a smallmouth will pick up a jig dragging bottom. Why not try the 1/8 oz. (alloy = 3/32 oz.) ball jig with eyes. (I like the eyes - I don't believe the fish care one way or the other.) Pleased to meet you! There are two grizzly hackles running down the top of this jig. Feathers can be fragile but these stood up to five smallies chewing on them and will fish another day. Brad tied on a black jig with a few strands of Wapsi Flashabou Accent. And so it went for a couple of hours mid - late morning. Unfortunately I was not able to reciprocate with fish on my spots. Maybe next week when the water is a few degrees warmer. Today we fished 47º - 51º . . . slowly. Considering the lack of wind and not much sun, I was well satisfied with the day's net results. Thank you, Bassmaster Brad, for your excellent company and fine net work.

  38. The prop is too deep. Even if it is tilted all the way down, you'll still have problems getting it on plane. It's a function of leverage. The longer the lower unit, the more leverage the prop has to raise the bow. Make the shaft long enough and it will flip the boat over backward. You need to raise the motor. There are bolt on devices to do just that. Raising the motor five inches will not only solve your problem, but it will also allow you to run in shallower (is there such a word?) water. The previous post about weight distribution should also be considered.

  39. I have a Lowe 1432 and have no problems with all three of the motors I use on it. I have a 4hp Merc, a 9.9 Johnson and a 25hp Merc, all short shaft motors. The 25 is a bit much and you have to be very careful, the sucker is scary fast with it. You don't make sudden changes in direction. My first thoughts are you are not tucking the motor in far enough and have too much weight in the rear of the boat. You have to remember, that 18 Rude is the same as the 25 Johnson and is a very heavy motor to be on the back of that small of a boat. You definetly don't want to add any more set back, that will only make it worse. You need to start with the motor adjusted so the tilt pin is in the very bottom hole. If it's still making the bow go straight up in the air, add wedges between the motor mount and hull so it will trim further in. If that don't help, then the motor is probably too heavy and will have to put something in the bow to add weight. If the motor is just bogging down and not lifting the bow, then you have motor problems. Motor is not making enough power.

  41. I pulled this one in a couple weekends ago using a lipless crank. He couldn't even fit the lure in his mouth, just got snagged on the hooks. It was an awesome fight though. I forgot how hard catfish can fight so I initially thought I hooked a striper, but no just a desperate catfish. Other than this for the most part I have caught a ton of pickerel on bass lures, but not much else. The one I did find funny though was when the bass weren't biting so I switched up to catch some panfish just to catch something. After catching a handful of bream on a beetle spin I was shocked to pull this guy out. This was technically my first bass this year so I was stoked to catch it especially since by that point I had given up on catching any bass.

  42. So let me ask you this: if you snagged her by her face and drug her around for a few seconds, would that have been less stressful on you? Because I'm sure the bass doesn't care where she's hooked. If you're going to fish, and bed fish, it's going to happen. I hope you find peace.

  45. Is that somewhere close to "Terry's Run" ? If you call the marinas and ask to speak with any of the guides , there are a few that can give you some great details as to what the fish are doing that time of month , anyone at Fish Tales is usually extremely helpful , call and leave a message , they will call you back if you don't get an answer right away , Ask for Chris Craft or Dave Fauntleroy , Ron is also a good one to speak with , they have a pretty good fishing website ( Anna point marina ) that has the current fish activity for the month covering all species of the lake , so does Sturgeon Creek Marina , just let em know the dates and they will give you some pretty good clues as to where to try your luck for the area you'll be fishing . The lake primarily fishes green , ( bait colors ) depending on sun and water clearity as to when to add some flaking or color to your baits , that time of month I would be focusing on some of the deepest grass lines you can find , if it's overcast , fish the outer edges and outside of boat docks , if it's sunny , focus on the bait getting under the boat docks , if you can skip a bait , put it as far under them as you can , if you find some thick vegetation pick it apart with a jig . There are some good lay downs around the lake , don't pass up the opportunity to fish those as well , fish those at the outside and work your way in , especially with ones that extend out to deeper water at the top of the lay . If the fish aren't chasing spinners and crank baits , don't be afraid to soak your baits with a T-Rig worm etc ... A grub hopped along the bottom works great for that time of year or swam slowly around boat docks with some intermittent pausing , otherwise , move them very slowly across the bottom or use some slow fall rate baits and watch your line closely ! Hope that helps and that you have a great trip to Anna !!!
