  6. Note: This is part of a series targeting toward beginners about straightening your learning curve with a baitcast reel. To see part one on why to get a baitcast combo, click here: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/154372-trials-and-errors-with-a-baitcaster-pt-1-why-get-a-baitcast-combo/ --------------------------- So we've talked about your choice to buy a baitcasting reel in part one of the series. Let's say you've decided to give them a try. You go online and start looking around. Wow! There's a lot of choices! There's Shimano, Abu Garcia, Lew's, Diawa, Pfleuger, Ardent, Wright & McGill, Megabass, Duckett, Quantum, Okuma, and Pinnacle, just to name some of the better known ones. Don't even get started on rods. So what are you looking for in a good combo? First, don't skimp on quality. Most pros will tell you, don't go under $100.00 for your first reel. If you're really budget minded, you can probably safely go down to $75.00. There are reels under that price range that will perform decently for you, but investing a little more money and getting a nicer reel is always worth it. It will last longer and make your experience smoother. I would be more lenient with rods. You can get a surprisingly sensitive rod that will last for as low as $40.00 Obviously, if you have the money, get a nice rod, but if you're on a big budget, you can skimp a little here and get by just fine. Buying used always is an option. You can get a nice rod or reel for a lot cheaper if you get it off of Ebay or the Flea Market here on Bass Resource. Buying anything used is always a little risky, but this is a great option for you if you're looking to save money. Stick with a Name Brand. I don't swear by a specific brand, simply because I haven't tried a lot. Probably the four best known and most trusted companies are Shimano, Abu Garcia, Lews, and Diawa. Some people swear by X brand, and say everything else is junk, and some people like trying lots of different brands. Whatever your opinions are, make sure you plan a trip to Bass Pro and try out the reel you want to get and see how it feels in your hand. You don't want to get a reel you don't like the feel of. The same with rods. Find one in your price range that feels good in your hand and has good ratings online. For the record, I picked up a Lews Tournament MG Speed Spool, and have been really pleased with my choice. Make the choice between profiles. What about those big round reels? Those are designed after the original baitcast reel with a larger profile. Some people really like them, others don't. Due the sake of simplicity and ease of palming the reel, I'd stick with a low-profile for your first reel. Figure out what side the handle should be. Typically, if you're right-handed, you cast with your right hand, switch your reel to your left hand, who palms it while you're reeling, and reel with your right hand. So the handle will be on the right side. Vice versa with left-handers. Some people like to mix it up, but typically what I've outlined works for most people. Make sure you get a reel with the handle on the right side! Find some good sales. Waiting till Black Friday can really pay off. I found a reel that typically retails for around $140.00 for $50.00 brand new! That's some big time savings! Sites like Gander Mountain, Cabelas, and Tackle Warehouse all had really good deals and rebates last year. I would really recommend buying your reel on Black Friday if you can wait and would like to save money. In the end, don't complicate things. Research helps. I did a good bit of online looking, asking, and reading before I bought my first, and it paid off. My reel has been performing flawlessly. But the most important thing is gaining confidence with casting the reel. That's what we'll be looking at in the next few parts of the series.

  7. I have to vent... You guys are awesome. I've always liked fishing as a kid and have many fond memories but never got reeeally into it until a few years ago. It was an impromptu fishing trip for a friend who was going through some really tough times that turned into the greatest day ever- it was GLORIOUS. We still talk about it now! It took that day to really open my eyes and become a huge focal point in my mind and the obsession had begun but I still had no idea what I was doing. I mean, how do you even begin to learn when you don't really know many people that fish and the ones who do aren't serious at all? Bass Resource, that's how. I mean dang, between Glenn dropping so much video knowledge I have to wear steel toes when I watch 'em to the individuals that fill it with nonstop experience, humor and insight... You can't help but learn. It's like a fire burning and just about all of you have helped me stoke it in some way. It's insane to think of all the things I learned between lurking, searching, reading, watching and then finally participating more recently. It's been a heck of a run so far and it's just the beginning- I still have so much to learn. So yeah, just wanted to take a minute to say thanks and give you all a big fat cyber high five for being yourselves. I really have appreciated all the enabling, the stories and the experience. Without you guys I'd be stuck sleeping in and having all kinds of money lying around and we can't be having that!! Cheers!

  8. this is wrong. you need to set the hook at the first tap or sign of a bite. it's hard enough to feel big fish b//c they inhale/exhale the lure so fast. Shaw Grigsby said there are 3 taps you'll feel with a bite: 1st tap= the bass inhaling the lure 2nd tap=the bass spitting it out 3rd tap= is shaw tapping you on your on shoulder asking 'why you didn't set the hook!?'

  9. I match my rods and reels by weight. I have 5 Alphas and an SS SV. These sre spooled with either 8 or 10 , and mounted on my lightest power rods. My 4 Zillions get 14 , and are on my heaviest power rods. In the middle of the pack are 5 Fuegos, 2 TD-Z, and a Viento. These are spooled with 12, and are on the rest of the rods. What they look like has no bearing on the pairing.

  14. When you catch the fish, lay it on the floor of the boat (or on the shore) & set a TV remote control next to it. If the fish grabs the remote and starts pressing the CH+ button, it is a male. If the fish asks you to change the channel because it would like to watch "Dancing with the Stars", it is a female.

  18. Today, I was at the pond. Caught a couple of little fish, but couldn't get anything together. I tied on a Yum Money Craw with a 1/4 oz. bullet weight and started dragging it over logs on the bottom. Felt a weight, and set the hook. Thought I had a turtle or a carp on at first, but when it jumped for the first time, it was so big I thought I had an 8 or 9 pound bass on. It headed straight for some logs to my right side, so I charged into the water and fought it away from there. Pulled it up to the bank, picked it up, and the hook fell out. It weighed 7 3/4 pounds on the scale, and was 24 1/2 inches long, with an incredibly fat stomach. Now, you're asking, why are there no pictures? For one, I made quite possibly the stupidest mistake of my life and didn't bring my phone. I usually take a trackphone fishing with me. The photos won't even upload to the internet, but at least I could show people. So I took a vine and tethered the bass to a log in the water. I didn't want to kill it (I would much rather have it swim away then get pics and die). I attatched the vine in such a way that the bass was upright in the water, made sure it was breathing, and headed down the road on my bike to home, 2 minutes away. I'm sure the cars passing wondered why this wild-eyed teenager was racing down the road at such a desparate pace! Ran into my house, got my brother and mom and a camera, and we drove back to the pond. THE BASS WAS GONE. Very disappointing. But I caught the bass!!!!! My previous PB was 4 1/3 pounds. People might not believe me, but at least I landed it. I'm still shaking.

  19. I'm a little late posting this, but I went out Tuesday morning to try my luck since the weather has been a little more consistent in the high 70's and low 80's. I didn't think I would be throwing a Pop-R since soft plastics been getting the job done. Well, it was a lot action on the surface and I immediately changed my presentation. I don't fish top water lures often. Here's the first bass of the day that got my adrenaline rushing... He's no record, but he got my day started. I do believe I missed my personal best that day with the Pop-R Nice hook set, felt the fish, fish came out the water and threw my Rebel back at me... Same fish threw my Super Spot back. It was time to go home.

  21. Sounds like you found some females that had other thoughts and found a few males willing to play. Great thing is there are always fish somewhere that aren't in a spawning mood. That batch of females moved up, so somewhere in a staging area the next wave of females may be taking their place. I rarely catch big cruising fish so I just admire and ignore them for the most part and try and focus my efforts where I think they should be staging and slow down and grind it out.

  24. Have gone out almost everyday over the past 7 days. Fish have hit everything. Topwater frogs, soft plastics, and hard plastics. Caught fish from about 10" long up to a solid 7 pounder the other day on a fluke. Most of the fish are protecting the fry and those who aren't hit just about anything. I also caught a fish today that i had caught 2 days in a row in early March. I will post pics when i make it home. The way i could tell it was the same is it has a weird injury on its back that shows really well

  27. Fishing Lake Jackson in Ga in january we went up in a nasty looking cove full of rocks,logs, and trash. My partner had to answer natures call so we powerpoled down so he could shimmy up logs to the bank. We spent almost an hour picking through lures that had washed up. I have a box now dedicated to recovered lures.;

  31. I like a wide variety of music, my favorite genre right now is probably hardcore stuff, Motionless in White is my favorite band. Other than that I like a lot of hard rock ( 3DG, Shinedown, A7X, Killswitch, Breaking Benjamin, Escape the Fate). My girlfriend has gotten me into some alternative stuff like One republic, Imagine Dragons, and coldplay. As well as some softer pop music. For other pop music : uptown funk is my radio jam. I would like rap music more if the majority of available content wasn't horrifically offensive, artificial, ungenuine, repetitive, and so on... jmo That Baby metal is some sick sounding stuff, I would probably really dig it if I understood Japanese.

  39. My hookup ratio decreases with jigs, plastics and frogs as well when I'm far away. But I've found a heavier rod and braid will help. When I'm fishing from a boat I'm not usually shooting for distance. But when I'm fishing from a canal bank, a good long cast helps immensely. I bought a seven six casting rod just to fish some of the canals here in south fl. And it's helped me to cast the opposite points and legdes I couldn't reach with shorter rods.

  43. You're right. Nobody in the history of mankind to our knowledge has ever gotten that big without steroids, but that's not what I'm saying. His competition weight is ~300 lbs with a body fat percentage of ~3%. I'm saying if he never took steroids he could have realistically gotten up to 240 or so with a 5 % body fat percentage. He has the genetics. If I or someone else took just as many steroids as he does, worked just as hard, and ate just as much, we still wouldn't be nearly the size he is. I, however, would never want to get that big even if I could. I think it looks stupid. But everyone seems to have a genetic limit, even with steroids. Trust me. A very good friend of mine has screwed himself up forever trying to push his limit. He took more steroids than you would believe and never broke 220. So the lesson to be learned here is don't do steroids.

  48. Tuna: When you get to the landing, walk to the right toward the Potomac River. As you get to the river, turn right again and follow the shoreline downriver about 100 yards. There, you will find a ledge that goes all the way across the river. You can access one of the better pools from the Virginia shore. As you look across the river, you will see rocks sticking out of the water on a diagonal line, heading upriver. Each of these rocks is part of the ledge and has a school of minnows at the upper end of the rock. Smallmouth cruise up and down the Maryland shore until they come to the ledge. They then follow the ledge over to the Virginia shore, stopping at each rock to gorge on the minnows. In 17 years of guiding on the Potomac River, my clients had 10+ citation smallmouth from this ledge, particularly the pool just below the rock closest to the Virginia shore. The water at that point swirls away from shore and down a chute beside the first rock it comes to. This has created a pool below the rock where large smallmouth go to feed.. If you can get across Goose Creek, you can walk upriver along the Virginia shore until you come to the power lines (about 150 yards). At this point, a gas line that is shored up with riprap, runs across the river. Fishing Tiny Torpedos, Pop-R or Rapala floating minnow above the gas line and allowing it to float down to the riprap will get your arm jerked real good. I have had many 50 fish days on topwater on that gas line. Below the gas line, smallmouth feed on crayfish and hellgrammites on the bottom. I have found that the best lures below the gas line are small tubes or grubs in dark colors. At one point, approximately 20 yards off the Virginia shore, the gas line riprap is very sparse, creating lots more current than along the rest of the gas line. Here, I like to fish small spinnerbaits and Zoom Super Flukes. And lastly, get yourself some Bill Norman Deep Tiny N crank baits in white and crayfish colors or Bagley Killer B1 baits in crayfish and chartreuse colors and just fan cast the entire river at the mouth of Goose Creek. You will catch a bunch of smallmouth bass. They may not be the largest fish in the river but you will definitely enjoy yourself. Good fishing'........ Charlie...... www.charlietaylorfishing.com
