  1. I and some other guys went to a certain lake To start out the morning, it was raining, and we got there about 7:20. About 10 minutes after that, i was throwing a white KVD Elite series spinnerbait(i think that is what is was), when this exceptionally large bass hit. I didn't measure, but it weighed 5.9lbs. Nobody else caught anything for some reason at all.

  4. Your question is "should I switch?" No, but you should add a baitcaster to your arsenal. You should get a really nice set up for that money. For ease of casting I like Daiwa reels. A Medium Heavy, fast rod will serve you well.

  6. We'll I did pretty well down here in Florida 21 fish in 2 days. The big one was caught on a rage bug weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces 24 inches long. Most of the fish were caught on Texas rigged craws. Sight fished a good bit of them. I was in Palm Coast Florida in a fairly small pond.

  8. Well im home schooled and my mom is awesome because she didnt make me write about some dumb Egypt stuff but what i love fishing. I got most of this from this web site and KVD's spring classic sale seminar. so tell me what you guys think not on a teacher level but fisherman to fisherman and if any of my info was wrong so here it is BASS IN THE SPRING In this article I will be talking about the bass spawn and bass behavior in the spring. You will also learn about the different stages of spring which are Prespawn, Spawn and Post-Spawn, and what lures can catch spring bass. So lets get into it. THE PRESPAWN This point of Spring is called PreSpawn, this is real early Spring. At this time of spring this bass start to move toward shallower water once the water hits about 45 to 50 degrees. In the PreSpawn the bass are very hungry because of spending the whole winter in deep water, so the bass cruise the banks eating lots of blue gill, crawfish and shad. So blue gill colored crankbaits, swim jigs, spinner baits and swim baits work well. For crawfish imitations: crankbaits again, Texas rigged craws and beavers, jigs and even dragging craw colored spinner baits work well. For shad.... well again crankbaits, spinner baits, swim baits, jerkbaits, Etc. The bass also look for mates and calm places to make beds for spawning while they are shallow in the Spring, The word shallow can depend on the lake you are fishing, take for instance a lake in Florida, deep winter holes may be only 10 to 15 feet and the bass may spawn with their backs out of water. While lakes as such as Table Rock Lake, winter holes can be 60 to 120 feet deep and bass may spawn in 12 feet of water. How deep bass spawn will depend on depth of your lake and water clarity. So in review of PRESPAWN, what bass do is eat eat and eat and get ready to spawn. After Prespawn we have whats called the Spawn. THE SPAWN OK, Prespawn is over, and the bass very Very VERY BIG, FAT, And mean. The place you will find spawning bass is off of creek channels that run next to the bank, but you will find them on spawning flats next to the creek channels that the bass use to travel. These spawning flats are most likely old fields if you are fishing man-made lakes. When bass are on their beds they are even meaner because bass eggs and fry are on the menu for everything including blue gill, lizards, crawfish and frogs, so the bass have a hard job of protecting the eggs. So lures that work for bedding bass are blue gill colored lures, Texas rigged craws and beavers, lizards, and jigs. So to make sure to get best chance of survival for as many bass as possible both the male and female protect the bed. While of the bass runs things off that try to eat the eggs the other one fans the eggs to keep the bed clean and airats the eggs. So basicly during the spawn protects the eggs and keeps the bed clean. Now after the spawn its the post-spawn, now we will get into that. POST-SPAWN This is late Spring or Post-Spawn, While the male bass are off their beds, their job for spring isn't over yet. For up to another 2 weeks the male bass still has to protect the fry from: blue gill, crappie, and even other bass, so the bass' job is even harder then while on the bed because he has to protect the fry while going after atleast a week without a meal except for the occasional blue gill or crawfish that dared to come close to the bed. Once the bass fry disperse the buck can finally get his first meal In up to 3 weeks.. Well thats the bass spawn now thats over bass eat their health back then go into the creek channel where the water is cooler and stay there until fall where they will feed up for the winter. Well thats Spring for a bass, seems pretty tough for everyone involved but bass are still around. In review prespawn is when the bass move shallow and feed up for the spawn. The Spawn is when bass are on beds protecting the eggs from blue gill, lizard, and crawfish. And Post-Spawn is the end of spring when the bass fry disperse and bass start thair summer pattern.

  9. Bet this guy is also a trout fisherman. Very common to call eggs spawn. The easiest way to tell is by season, although we know that is never a 100% sure way to know. My take on it is this, I would never do it. But if someone chooses to keep a bass, caught within a legal season, by legal means, and is a legal fish, it is his/her right to do so. There are thousands of bass spawning around the same time period each year, and to think that just 1 bass will ruin a lake is asinine. Like I said, I would never do it, but all things taken into consideration- it is their right just like it is yours to release the fish. Jeff

  12. I get a call from a buddy about going up to Georgia for two days of fishing our most favorite pond. I jump on the chance because I have fished there before & know the potential for a new PB is looming. Besides it means fishing on my birthday a tradition I always try to maintain. We had a 6.5 hour drive to get there and didn't arrive until about 5:30 pm. We headed down to the back pond about 7 acres in size. Justin spread out to the right casting as he went. We all spread out as we started fishing. On Justin's fifth cast with a white spinnerbait he got bit. He yelled out I got a good one. Little did he know how really good it would turn out to be. We all headed over in his direction to see how big it was. Justin is a very accomplished fisherman in his thirties but has fished almost all his life. His biggest PB weighed was a big 9lb class fish until this trip. When he stepped off the bank with one foot to grab her he realized he had just caught a super pig. He put her on a digital scale that showed 14lbs-7oz. I weighed her on my digital and got 14-lbs-8.5ozs. She measured out at 25.75 inches long with a 24" girth. We finished the trip with a full day of fishing after that trophy day. We ended up with two fish over 8lbs, two over 7lbs and four over six with some fives. One unlucky angler lost a DD on a Hudd 68 when she wallowed at the bank. Shame on him.

  13. First win of the year! gardnerjigman and I teamed up for 14lbs 11ozs and I caught the big bass at 4lbs 14ozs. They were slamming my bladed jigs, which is always a good time. Took us about 30 minutes to get a fish, which feels like an eternity in a 2.5 hour weeknight tournament. Then I got my heart broke by a 5lb channel cat that slammed the bait 15' from the boat. Finally got on them good in the very back of one of the main lake arms in less than 2' of water. Both my bigger fish were right on the bank in less than a foot and hit the bait almost instantly. The biggest fish had a massive gizzard shad tail sticking out of her throat. I fished a few different colors but 2 of them were by far my best producers. Had a few on a spinnerbait also but nothing that got weighed in. \ The big girl fell for Bream with a Zman Diesel MinnowZ in Houdini Our other two biggest fish choked the T-rock with a black and blue YUM swim 'N dinger on the back. Coty snagged a massive grass carp with his bladed jig for a few seconds, looked like a scene from Swamp People with muddy water and weeds flying everywhere when it exploded the surface when the hook dug in, thankfully it popped loose. Had a massive 18" crappie caught by another team, never seen a crappie that big in person, it was a giant! Second place had 9lbs 7ozs and were both also fishing my bladed jigs. We watched them catch their kicker fish, 4lbs 12ozs. Kind of bittersweet to have someone else doing well with your baits when you're fishing against them

  18. First ill explain that I encounter all kinds of folks in my day to day job. It would be safe for me to say that i have encountered most types who are on this forum because not everyone I meet goes to jail. In fact I interact far more with people who do not go to jail or are not issued a citation than do. Frankly I see and interact with veterans, upstanding citizens, business people, average joe's etc etc etc. My statements about encountering people like you was not meant to be negative in the least, but it is good to hear that you have never been arrested, but I give you "no props" for that because following the law of the land is just part of your civic duty. Doing what it takes to not go to jail is what every citizen should be doing! Doesn't it just kinda sound rude when said that way....idk it prob just me. When I encounter people who are doing what they need to be doing I thank them for being a contributing part of society. Nothing wrong with thanking an officer for their service any different from thanking a serviceman or woman for their services to the nation. If we just looked at service people and said "no props" to you, your doing what you signed up to do, then would we look like rude jerks or what? Nothing personal in anyway man best of luck and tight lines this fishing season!

  23. It's funny; I used to picture the same cover you mentioned....until I started fishing offshore. Now, when I go out, I can't wait to pull up my gps, throw a bouy and cast a jig. EDIT: To answer your question Opie, shorelines get beat up all the time, not saying you cant catch fish there but everyone sees that same cover. I like finding offshore stuff, marking it and figuring it out. The biggest advantage of fishing offshore/deeper is I have found that deeper fish are less affected by pressure changes, weather changes etc... When the shoreline bite stops, I feel I can always hit some ridges or humps and find biting fish.

Been tried before, but post up and make this a really good thread. Some of my favorite soft plastics This is the majority of my tackle. I keep extra soft plastics and 8 or 9 hardbaits at home. It isn't that much, but I'm still collecting

  40. Here is my theory for what it is worth & I have experimented with all types of leaders & tying direct, and what I have found is that I like to tie direct with Braid in stained to tanic water color and I like the brown or green colored lines. If I am flipping I like the super slick 8 strand blue Power Pro since it is quit compared to a normal 4 strand weave which makes a lot of noise while casting or pitching in the wind, and when it rubs against the pads and weeds. I truly believe that the newer 8 strand braids with smooth coatings not only cast further, rarely dig into the reel & cause less casting issues, plus I am convinced that when fishing in weeds the fish here the braid, but I also use it since it helps me land fish because it cuts through weeds and allows me to fish places that 20-30lb would not, and if it could then I believe that the smaller diameter is an equal trade off....HERE IS A TIP THAT HELPS ME ALOT.. I love to watch my line when throwing texas rigs, drop shot, shaky rigs, punching etc...so if I am going with braid tied direct to the business end, I color the blue line black or dark green (the last 4-6') as it is important to set on a fish in heavy cover as soon as possible in order to get them out. On spinning rods, I will use green or brown braid and I feel that a 20lb test 4lb diameter or 10-15 2lb is better than using a mono or fluoro which is much thicker and fish can feel. As mentioned, a leader is always a good option, I like braid for Carolina rigs or any bottom rig so I can feel the bottom composition and I use a copoly or Fluoro leader tied direct or with a swivel. I find in clear water or open water I think I do better with 6-10lb test mono but that is a confidence thing when fishing a slow bait like a wacky worm etc. Here is a good rule of thumb that a few people who know a lot more than I know have helped me with...If fishing treble hooks on a lure than it is best to use a line that stretches plus you are reeling fast so if fishing a wake bait or zara spook I will put 15lb test trilene big game and go to town, but if I am fishing a rod with a slower action and lots of bend like a cranking stick in heavy cover, I then go with braid and keep the drag set properly, and I only use leaders for c-rigs or slow presentations, topwater I like a clear line for some reason. Now, I know people who fish braid with everything, tie direct and never look back and they do fine. I also know people that hate it and do fine, but I could not live without braid for casting distance, and thin diameter plus the strength. They make braids in colors that are tough to see underwater and you can always copy the Triple fish camo line of coloring 3 strips of brown, green, purple for a good 6 feet and that line and color combo works in the water here in Florida. I would not tie direct with Red braid or Bright blue or white solid colors. Fluoro leader helps me in my mind when I feel as though fish can see my line, so I will at times use 30lb braid on a spinning reel, and a 10lb fluoro leader for the fact I believe in the sinking and invisible properties that may or may not be true, but based on my ramble, there are not right answers, since you are not doing well with straight braid, I would simply change just for some New positive Energy.... Aaron Martins has some great videos on braid and leader etc....Hope that helps a bit.

  41. You're gonna need to bump up that 30lb braid man. 20lb mono or copoly is pretty standard for the baits you mention, with a little variance either up or down depending on desired effect. As far as leaders, I'd stick with a heavier fluoro leader as opposed to a steel one.

  42. So that was you that did that to my family and I?! You sir, have been found! Same scenario happened to us one night many years ago while night fishing on the bank. Customs and Coast Guard. Brightest light I have ever seen. Once they checked us out, all of the immigration paperwork, etc etc the tension quickly went away. But man, those dudes were rolling full battle rattle that night. That's one experience that I will never forget. Tax dollars at work right there.
