  2. Had a buddy from Atlanta come down for two days of fishing. Unfortunately for us both we were involved with a major cold front. Temps went down into the low forties each night. Anybody familiar with Florida bass fishing knows or have experienced tough, tough fishing after a cold front hits. Usually the bass shut down for days up to a week. The cold front started on Tuesday & we were fishing Wednesday & Thursday with dampened anticipation for the next two days. Day one really sucked because of water flow problems stirring up silt & plant debris. Day two started out cold & foggy but the water was clearing & still. We started catching fish right away. Long story short we had a really good day. My long time fishing buddy caught a new pb & I did as well. We had about 20 fish between 4-5 lbs. Two fish between 5-6lbs. Three fish between 6-7lbs. Dave's pb bass went 8lbs-8oz and my pb bass went 11lbs-2oz. What a day for a cold front! The magic baits were indigenous swimbaits.

  7. Pun intended...anyways got early christmas gift. My wife is the best. Got a silver max (really wanted an h2o mettle express) but couldnt find a lefty. I was really impressed with it. Once i figured out the drag brakes spool tension this thing was a blast. It was much easier to use than i expected and casts a mile. I like having control of where i can stop the cast etc. I am going to enjoy 2015 with this reel. I have it paired up with ugly stik gx2 7 ft mh rod and 50 lb braid. I think it is a very solid combo for under 100 bucks. I am glad to join the bait caster club

  14. For drop-shotting try the VMC spin shot hooks, I use them, and like them a lot. Here is what I do: Nose hooking things like finesse worms, gulp minnows, and other small baits I use the #2 spinshot, If I want to rig those same smaller baits on a weedless drop shot, I will use the #1/0 EWG spinshot. If I bump up to a little bigger bait, I go with the #1 spinshot, and the 3/0 EWG spinshot If I am "bubba" or "power" shotting I use the 3/0-5/0 Power-shot hook. These hooks are all fairly cheap (in cost, very good quality) so get a bucnh of them and see what works for you. As for sinkers, I like the "pencil" or "finesse" style drop-shot sinkers. The slip in and out of rocks and grass better. I carry 3 sizes, 1/4oz. for shallow work, 3/8's for "all purpose work", and 1/2 for deep water and/or windy conditions. When bubba-shotting, I use the old-timey lead bass casting sinkers in 1/2-1 oz sizes depending on the thickness of cover, they tie direct to the "tag" or "drop" line and wont pull off in thick cover like the drop shot weights do.

  16. Tom's jigs: *close up photos of a few jigs and pork trailer. The pork trailer is a copy of the old Pedigo 4” lizard made for me by SuperPork*, now out of business. The jig is my own design that dates back to ’71; a stand up viper shape that goes through rocks extremely well, not good for brush. I use a Gamakatsu #114, 5/0 on the 7/16 oz jig. This jig is ideally suited for casting horizontal presentations in deep structured lakes..*

  20. Last week 00mod & I pulled the trigger on a spur of the moment 4 ½ day trip to our favorite Big Bass Lake on the planet, and once again Lake Baccarac Lodge in Mexico did not disappoint. Our guide Manual (Mexico’s Best), had us on good bass at our very first spot and the action was hot & heavy for our entire trip. Jigs, scroungers and flukes were our go to baits and the super charged Lake Baccarac Bass were in an feeding mood. Now I’ve heard stories about how there are times on this lake when it’s a bass on every cast but until this trip I’d not experienced it. However during several extended periods of both our morning & afternoon sessions, it was literally a bass on every cast with well over 400 hundred 2-4 lb bass coming to the boat in 4 ½ days of fishing. It was a little nuts, but in a good way. The last two days of this epic trip, the really big bass that this lake is known for began to feed. Jeff & I both landed several bass between 5 and 7 pounds along with 8, 9 and 10 pound trophies. A few of my favorite pictures appear below and I’m sure 00 mod will have something to add as well. I’ve said this before but I’m going to say it again, if you have the opportunity, this place is really special. I highly recommend it. A-Jay

  21. I'm not in CA so I guess it does I was dragging a 5" zoom shakeyhead worm on a 1/8oz jighead... moving it about a foot every 15 seconds. Two taps and I set the hook! I would like to think that he had the tip of the worm in his mouth so when I set the hook it stuck in his side, but who knows. Eager to try it some this weekend when I have more time, it's hard to cover water when it takes 2 minutes per cast!

  24. A DEA Agent stopped at a ranch in Texas and talked to an old rancher. He told the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs." The rancher... said, "okay, but don't go into that field over there...", as he pointed out the location. The DEA Agent verbally exploded and said, "look mister, I have the authority of the federal government with me!" Reaching into his rear back pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. "See this badge?! This badge means I can go wherever I want... On any land! No questions asked, no answers given! Do you understand old man?!" The rancher kindly nodded, apologized, and went about his chores. Moments later the rancher heard loud screams, he looked up and saw the DEA agent running for his life, being chased by the ranchers big Santa Gertrudis Bull...... With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it was likely that he'd sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The old rancher threw down his tools, ran as fast as he could to the fence, and yelled at the top of his lungs...... "YOUR BADGE! SHOW HIM YOUR BADGE!"

  26. I agree with the DQ.. The rule seems clear enough to me. Tournament Director did his job & duty. The team broke the rule, and were caught. Seems straight forward to me.... The rule is against the A-rig. A fisherman must know the rules, and IMO must follow them all..

  28. This one makes me nervous. It's dangerous in any industry when one company can corner a market. I worked in corporate acquisitions for a number of years, and here's what my strategy would be if I were Johnny Morris: 1. Announce that all brands will stay independent, only have common ownership (i.e. Bass Pro/JM). Pronounce that BPS will be a premier boat dealer with more selection than just Nitro from now on. Declare a win for consumers because a company that loves the outdoors will own all premier boat brands instead of a greedy Private Equity firm. 2. Behind the scenes, start consolidating internal functions (sales, accounting, management, HR) everything but manufacturing, and centralize the R&D function. Increase synergy and profitability. 3. Plan a market strategy to "stack the brands". Always make Nitro the most price competitive, Stratos falls behind Nitro, Triton falls behind Ranger. 4. Keep all four brands until the sales shake out. Drop the low performing brands, take the R&D budgets of the low performing brands to reinvest in the high performers. Increase profitability across the board. 5. At the end of the day, consumers will be left with 1 or 2 brands. My bet is that we will see Triton and Stratos fall to the wayside within 5-8 years as JM writes down the acquisition and hits his payback. We will be left with Nitro and Ranger. JM will have very large supplier power and will also be able to control the dealership markets which could hurt brands like Bass Cat, Phoenix, Skeeter, etc. To spell it out, JM could say that boat dealerships cannot sell the other brands if they want his brands on their lots, or could give better pricing structures to exclusive dealers. He will also have supplier power over Mercury, Evinrude, Honda, Yamaha, etc as he will have more purchasing power over the motors to power his boats. My gut tells me this is a big loss for consumers and a huge win for JM. I would be surprised if Mercury, Yamaha and Evinrude, Bass Cat, Phoenix, Champion, etc don't throw a fit and try to challenge the acquisition. You may ask why this hasn't happened already because the three brands were already owned by a common owner. The difference is that JM owns the whole supply chain, manufacturing and now distribution. JM also owns the biggest source of competition, Nitro. Also, remember what happened to Procraft and Astro when JM bought those brands.

  29. Crappie has been a lot lower here as well, much shorter numbers and thinner offerings. I didn't even keep any this year. I can't complain for this bass season, it's still going for me until the water gets hard. The wife and I had 4 over 7lb and numerous over 5lb. I really didn't get out as much as I wanted to due to other reasons, but I'm satisfied.

  31. All of the Bass Pro Shops XPS lures at fairly good quality. On par w/much more expensive baits. Big Bite Baits soft Plastics are also a good value that perform very well.
    2 points
  32. Havoc soft plastics. $2.99 for a a bag of 8-10 baits (on average some have less, some have more), and I have yet to find one that's a dud. I have replaced all my higher priced plastics with Havoc baits, and have not looked back. Some , like the Pit Boss for example are almost as good as it gets for that style of bait. And I was..............WAS............a big fan of the R.I. Beavers, until I switched to the Pit Boss's. Boss jig making materials are about as good as it gets for jigs (for me) I can make my own head skirt combos with quality heads/skirts for on average $1 or more less than the jigs sold by the big names (SK. Booyah, etc....) or the custom jig makers.

  33. My dad lived by this. There were even a few times he turned around because all of the cows were laying down. To be honest I think it was an excuse to go back home and go back to bed. lol I don't know if is right but I know almost every time I go fishing and have a good day I see a lot of wildlife roaming around, running across the roads and fields. Maybe theres a connection

  34. My general rule of thumb is if it has treble hooks I am throwing Mono. The stretch helps reduce the amount of pressure applies directly to those little treble hooks, and reduces the number of lost fish.

  35. You will doing a lot of "sweeping" at nothing at first. Then you will start gaining "memory" on how different strikes feel. Best way for me is I know what it feels like when I am just working it back, so if it ever feels differently, let er rip. Hook sets are free.

  44. Ones that I have debunked..........at least to myself, some people might disagree, oh well, such is life: #1 Color matters #2 Bass are smart #3 Bass fisherman are smart..................and before anyone gets their jock strap in a knot about this, I am example #1..........I say color doesn't matter, yet have the rainbow of colors at my disposal. I'm pretty much an idiot. #4 I lost my train of thought.............

  45. Fluoro does stretch but not quite as much as mono. It sinks much quicker and it is definitely less visable. Ask anybody who fishes saltwater. When the fish get line shy, Fluoro can save the day.

  46. I have a Popmax and it's a good bait. My favorite popper is the Xcaliber Zell pop, the smaller size. Generally it's easier for me to spend a little more on a topwater or shallow running bait because I know there's a better chance I can get it back if it gets hung up.

  47. Myth, Internet experts are real experts? Just because a guy makes a lot of posts and loves to use key words like location, structure, and patterns does not mean the guy is legit. Every message board has one or a couple of these guys and usually a lot of members buy into it and praise them for there knowledge . These guys love to recycle info that they have read in some fishing magazine to try and make themselves sound like great and knowledgeable fisherman. No pictures, no video, no real info = internet expert.

  49. A man goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water. As the bartender gives him the drink he says: 'I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 88th birthday and it's today.' The bartender says 'Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.' As the man finishes his drink the person to his right says'I would like to buy you a drink, too.' The old man says 'Thank you. Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.' 'Coming up' says the bartender.' As he finishes that drink, the person to his left says 'I would like to buy you one, too.' The old man says 'Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.' 'Coming right up' the bartender says. As he gives him the drink, he says, Sir, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?' The old man replies, ’Sonny, when you're my age, you've learned how to hold your liquor... Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.'
