  1. First let me say that location, location, location, is so over used and over rated especially on this site. That's right I said it and I'll own it. I have seen many post where a guy asks for lure suggestions and at least one person chimes in with location. He didn't ask you about that did he? No and that simple answer does not help him in any way. Big bass do not live in some magical mysterious secret hole where all you have to do is find them and they will instantly turn stupid and eat what ever you throw at them. Anybody who has ever bass fished know this is absurd. Right place at the right time only gives you an opportunity. Its only a fraction of the varialbles. The entire process is extremely important. This includes, your approach, your presentation and hugely important, your lure or bait. You have to do a bunch of other things right weather you realize it or not. Catching big bass consistently is different then catching one ocasionaly. Targeting big bass is different then catching a bunch of small ones with a good one ever once in a while. Catching big bass consistently is about percentages and odds. You want to do everything you can to stack the odds. First, yes location. obviously and I emphasize OBVIOUSLY if your looking to catch the biggest bass you can, then your odds go up when you choose to fish lakes that hold more big bass. Learn the habits of big bass in your lakes and they will be easy to find. Does this mean they will also be easy to catch? Of course not! I live in possibly the most pressured fishing area in the US. I have no problem finding big bass. That's easy. Now catching them is adifferent story. Learn to stack the odds in your favor. Learn to recognize the percentages. Example. Barney catches 100 bass on Senkos. 95 are under 2lbs. 4 are between 2 and 4 lbs and 1 is an 6lber his new personal best. Now somebody posts a question asking about big baits for big bass. Well guess what Barney says? "Big baits don't wprk any better because I caught my PB on a Senko so I recommend that for big bass" WHAT?????? did he somehow forget about the 99 other bass that were not big? That senko produced 1 out of a 100. 1 percent and now he thinks that's a great big bass bait. That is absurd!!!. When I am targeting big bass I would estimate that 40% of my bites are big. You know why? because I am throwing baits with high percentages of catching big bass. Do big baits catch bigger bass?..... YES! period! They up your odds. Anybody who tells you differently does not have enough experience or they are unable to process all the info they have taken in. In other words they are "Barney" who caught the one big fish and forgot about the 99 small ones. It means nothing that a tiny percentage of big bass are caught on small fish baits. There are allways exceptions especially when they are millions of guys fishing for small bass. If you catch enough small bass, chances are you will luck into a bigger one. This is not targeting big bass. This is not upping your odds. Most guys who have caught big bass have caught them just like Barney. They look back over decades of fishing and remember the handful of big bass they have caught and then they recycle the same old bad advise on how to catch them. If you catch a small percentage of big bass then you are not doing it right. You also should not be telling others how to catch them. Its the blind leading the blind. Example. Think of the guys that consistently catch big bass. Butch Brown, Matt Allen, Oliver Ngy, Matt Peters. You can see these guys videos all over youtube. They aren't using small bass baits. They are using baits with a high percentage for catching big bass. Do you think they catch 1 big bass out of 100 dinks? You bet they don't!!! I am sure they catch a very high percentage of big bass. They do a whole lot more then just "location" and they use big baits. There small bass are Barneys good bass. My whole point to this post is help guys sift through the bad info posted on forums about how to catch big bass. If the answer is coming from a Barney then pay no attention. If the answer is simply "location" then that is so obvious it isn't helpful either. Now let me say of course location is important. There has to be big bass there to catch them ( thanks captain obvious) Figure out where they like to live in your bodies of water. You want to find them? Throw a big swimbait all day and they will reveal themselves to you. You might catch some or you just might get some followers. Pay attention to where they came from and what type of structure, cover, depth etc and find similar conditions and there is a high percentage that similar spots will also hold big bass. Trust me. it is a whole lot easier to find a big bass then it is to catch them. This is why I made this post when guys start posting the location response it takes away from all the other important factors. Don't believe me? again pay attention to what consistant big bass guys are using and how they approach a spot. Remember if a guy has caught thousands of small bass with a handful of big ones. He is not consistently catching big bass He might be a great bass fisherman but he is not a great big bass fisherman.

  2. Listen, you're going to get a lesson here.... Figuratively speaking, there is a reason you have two ears and only one mouth. You ought to be listening twice as much as you talk (or type). You're asking for advice. You're getting advice from people that have caught more big fish than you've dreamt about while sleeping (no, not counting myself in that group). It IS relative. You're stuck under 5lbs in a state that held the world record, a state where I'm good friends with more than a couple people who've caught fish well into the teens. Trust me, you're doing something wrong. Why don't you sit back, check your ego and listen / apply the information that's being presented to you. Try it. If it's something that seems totally against the grain of what you've been doing, that may be a good thing considering where you're stuck.

  3. Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, 'Steve's Place,' and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket. It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket. Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, 'Why the spoon?' 'Well,' he explained, 'the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour. If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.' As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. 'I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.' I was impressed. I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly. Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, 'Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?' "Oh, certainly!' Then he lowered his voice. 'Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom. By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%. I asked quietly, 'After you get it out, how do you put it back?' 'Well,' he whispered,'I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon.'

  4. I've fished these for about 8 years now maybe longer. They are definitely premium baits. I've caught hundreds of bass off them. Smallies and largemouth. These baits flat fish! I worked with Big M to produce these exclusively for me. Many of you guys may know him. I'll even throw out there that if you dont like the crankbait I will refund you for it or credit to other product, as long as it is returned in new condition within 30 days of the purchase.

  7. The fishing the past few days has been pretty good. There were times though when I went HOURS with out a bite. Saturday I got up real earlier and made it to the northern end of Lake Champlain. The fish were biting as soon as we launched the boat. I was getting a bunch of blow ups on a frog. We found fish in 2 weed beds. All the other areas we fished sucked. We tried for smallmouth and there was not much happening there. I did loose a big smallmouth but tat was about it. We started an finished the day on the same productive weed bed. For the day the two of us boated 35 bassour biggest five went around 17 lbs with a 3 lb 11 oz largemouth lunker. Sunday I fished a tournament out of Larabee's point on southern Lake Champlain. Between the tournament I was fishing and the 4 other tournaments that day there were over 80 boats fishing tournaments on the southern area of Lake Champlain. Then of course there were other fisherman not in the tournaments and recreational boaters. The place was a zoo. I didn't catch very many fish at all. The morning bite was good though. My first 2 fish in the boat were good ones and we needed them. The first fish slammed a jig pitched into some Milfoil at our first spot. At the second spot we went too after the fog lifted I was getting some frog blow ups. I got my second fish of the day here a nice one that exploded on my frog. The rest of the day was pretty slow. Nothing of any size the rest of the day. My partner and I went hours with out a bite. At the weigh in everyone said they had a tough day like we had had after the morning bite. We finished in 1st place with 15.6 lbs of fish and missed lunker by .07 lbs. Without the two bigger fish bites we would have not finished well at all. The two biggest fish 4.95 and 4.5 lbs Monday I had a few appointments in the morning. I decided to fish for smallies in the afternoon. It was hot with almost no wind. They didn't cooperate at first. I hadn't fished this lake for 2 years. After fishing a few spots and figuring them out I started catching fish. They were holding in deep weeds. I caught 26 bass for the day. Mostly around 2 -2 1/2 lbs. I saw 2 big smallies swimming by my boat. I toss my jig out there and they both go for it. As my jig was sitting on bottom both of them were nose down on it , one on each side. I hop and the bigger one inhaled it. The fight was on and I could see it was a real nice smallie. The fish was making strong runs and on one run the hook pulled out, bummer. It was a good one. In the same spot I hooked into a big fish I didn't see. It was like setting the hook into a stump, big fish. Big fish and 8 lb flouro carbon... The fish broke my line, bummer. I did manage to catch a couple better fish but nothing the size of those two. I finished the day with a 3 lb 1 oz and a 3 lb 5 oz. Definitely going to go back there soon. 3 lb 5 oz

  10. Big baits = big bass but a bait does not have to be big to be a consistant big bass producer. Small crayfish are a consistant big bass producer. They are one of the exceptons. I will also make a post later on about the misconseptins of throwing big baits. On of the biggest misconception is the "fishing for 1 bite a day" Or not catching anything for days. This is not the norm for guys who have some things figured out.

  11. I just heard from a couple of buddies that MLF is filming in Maine right stinkin now! Dang I wish I could get to a lake just to see them launch and pick up. I heard there are 24 pros here, 8 to a lake, all staying around 45 mins from me. Supposedly they don't know where they are going until they get there, 15 min lake ride and game on. I love that format and can't wait until it airs!

  12. Hey guys so I caught my personal best yesterday! I have only been fishing for about two years now, and a lot of what I have learned came from this forum and all yall on here, so I wanted to post and say thank you! Until this year I had never had any luck with texas rigging so I have been spending a lot of time each outing trying to get better with it. It has for sure led to some larger catches for me over the past few months. Anyways my dad and I were fishing a laydown that we hit almost every trip out. We had been on it for a pretty good while when I pitched a 7in powerworm into the middle of the tree. I felt the tap and started to get my slack up when I see my line swimming back into the laydown. After setting the hook he tried to wrap me up on a number of different limbs, but finally I was able to work him out of the tree. My dad netted him for me and we threw him on the scale. He came out to 6lb 6oz. Haha he bent out my hook some and I couldnt tie another hook on for a few minutes because my hands were shaking so badly! Anyways thanks again for all the advice and all of the help you guys offer on this forum!

  16. I think a lot of people use bigger baits than they even realize, at times. If you look at the profile of some of the "creature" baits out there, they are not exactly finesse baits. What keeps people from using the truly LARGE baits to target trophy fish is time on the water. Guys like me who don't get to fish as often as we'd like tend to focus on techniques that are likely to produce action, and possibly a big fish; rather than techniques where you might not get bit much but you are searching for the big one. I liken it a bit to catfishing, which is my background. I'm more likely to chase channel cat and maybe some decent blues on a Friday evening when I have a few hours, than rig up a 1 lb. carp and hope to catch a giant flathead.

  18. Big fish tend to let their guard down some at night. Cover the whole pond throwing a buzzbait parallel to the shore where the water is at least 2 ft deep. Then cover the pond again throwing a large slow swimming wake bait like a jointed rat, ms slammer, etc. . Those are two of the most reliable consistant summer time big bass techniques. The fish in your picture arrears to be healthy and bigger then a typical stunted bass. I would guess there are better fish in there.

  21. Took a buddy that just got into Bass Fishing on Saturday morning. Launched from Bull Run Marina and water was chocolate milk and up from the recent storms. A lot of people head down past the splits to get into clearer water. I fish my usual spots that hold fish in the morning and just change my baits accordingly. The way I see it is, the water is up and fish will move shallower to eat. Water temp was 71* and covered water with chart/white spinnerbait. After a few casts caught a 4.5-5lb that gave a nice fight. Continued covering 2-5ft of water and caught a handful. Moved further down toward the splits and fish were hugging cover. Creature baits produced strikes on the fall many times. Marked a TON of bait balls toward the bottom, but no fish with it. My buddy only caught a dink since most of the time he was catching leaves from trees. lol. He was happy he didn't get a goose egg. Never a bad day on the rez.

  24. here's how it works: as you can see, it all depends on what kind of fisherman you are. regular joes (blue) are don't know any difference and are happy as clams with a $50 combo or a $1000 combo. interestingly, professional tournament anglers (red) know the difference but most see fishing as a job and don't enjoy the equipment; also, they're so good, they catch fish regardless of what they use. the avid fisherman (green) appreciate nicer gear and have a sweet spot around right around $350 ($180 reel and a $170 rod)...after that, they have to spend much more to gain a little bit more enjoyment. now, for the tackle enthusiast, any combo under $250 barely even registers in their brain...they have to spend at least $500 just to have a so-so time fishing; for them, enjoyment goes up linearly with price.
