  1. Got a great gift today from a very unexpected person. The young guy that I fish with... Wow. Some of you guys have followed the posts I've made about a young man from my church that I've been mentoring and fishing with. He just turned 16 and lives with his mother. He doesnt know his dad. I've gotten him some lawn jobs and a job as a life guard for the summer. Today he calls wanting to come by, I told him. Sure....and he gets out of his Tacoma with a brand new fishing rod. I hollerd "Dang, boy...you cant mess with money". He brought it tp me and I looked at it and said " you got your self a nice one, I've been eyeballing those for a while for a topwater rod". He smiled real big and said, "its yours, Happy Fathers Day". Wow!! I thought my heart stopped. I told him that he shouldn't have done that, that a hundred some odd dollars is a lot of money and that he should save his money. He smiled real big again and said that I should have spent more time with my son and my wife but I didn't, that I chose to help him, keep him on the right path, teach him about life, church, service ans fishing. He had tears in his eyes and said that up until now he only knew what tv dads were like, not real ones and that he was happy to be my friend. At this point, I'm crying.. I told him, take the rod back and he can use some of the money to take me out to dinner... He smiled one last time and said " nah, ill take the reel thats I got you that's in the truck back .., keep the rod " The little rascal had saved up and got me a rod ans a reel and a card. New to my arsenal is a Fenwick Small mouth rod, and a Daiwa Tatula reel. I'm a happy dude.

  2. I didn't think Virginia had any truly big fish left. I thought it was a catfish or a carp for about 90 seconds as it towed my kayak around the lake. When I got a good look at her, I knew this was the bass of my life... Last personal best (which might have been this very fish 2 years ago) I had a scale, but no camera. This time I have the proof... Best father's day gift I could have gotten (although the BPS gift cards from my kids are not too shabby either...)

  7. 11 fish this morning all 15 - 18 inchers , nothing bigger. Good numbers in the Nashua river lately , just no big ones. Todays choice Purple senko , and white weedless mouse on top of the lilly pads. Launched from Stellos and followed the shore on the same side all the way around the corner and past the boat docks. Stumps, trees and lilly pads

  16. Got out with my dad for what will probably be the last pike trip of the season, as bass season opens up before my next day off work. Got a whole whack of fish, but only 2 really worth sharing. Got mine on a Shallow Believer on a deep tree over 17 feet of water, dad got his on an Imperium Ace on a shallower stretch on the same shoreline.

  20. The way you see most folks drop their combo's on the deck or shove them into rod lockers, on tourney's on t.v. it's no wonder. Combine that with the wholesale usage of uber high lb. test braided line and reels with high drag ratings than was previously available. Something has to give and with the line now being basically.....rope, it's going to be the rod. Surely you as a All-Star rod user, have seen a decrease in quality. When companies are consumed by mega conglomerates, these companies become a shell of their former selves and survive only in name.

  22. Went out saturday morning and water visability was a solid zero fromthe recent rain. Fish were still active chasing bait. Caught fish mostly in 2-2.5lb range and hooked up on this hawg when i went into a cove. Saw a nice baitball with feeding fish on sonar and pitched to the back of the boat. Didn't realize how big until it jumped. First nice fish this year (5lb 4oz). If you haven't gone out yet. Now is the time. Caught fish on rod except topwater. Swallowing cranks!

  24. Since I bought a Dobyns 736 a while ago, I haven't felt the need to have another frog rod. It just flat out does it all. Some people think that the 735 is a better rod for walking type frogs, personally I like the 736 more. IMO it's got a great tip for walking, you just have to learn how to use it since it's not as soft. You can call Dobyns directly and ask them what they think about it. Good bunch of people there that will happily help you out.

  25. Several years ago I fished with a tournament fisherman. After the day on the water, his comment was, "This is my first time fun fishing in several years." Hell, if it isn't fun, why do it?

  26. Again, huh? My 8-15 PB came on a 1/8 oz shaky head and Zoom finesse worm that I was throwing on a ML spinning rod with 8lb test. Absolutely no one is saying you MUST use spinning gear but let's please not pretend that big fish are not caught on small tackle. Use whatever you want, but I have multiple spinning rigs as part of my arsenal, and when I need to throw something less than a 1/4 oz, they get the call first.

  29. There are obvious differences between magnetic and centrifugal braking. There are also some less obvious, it is important to understand how magnetic braking effects the spool of your reel during the cast compared to centrifugal braking. Centrifugal braking has the most effect on spool speed during the beginning of the cast. Centrifugal braking relies on the high RPM of the spool to force the brake tabs outward and against the brake hub. This provides for more control during the start of the cast. As the spool speed slows the tabs do not have as much centrifugal force to deploy and the braking is reduced. This is where your thumb helps to finish off a perfect cast. Magnetic braking is very different, it applies a constant steady force to the spool throughout the entire casting sequence. During the beginning of the cast when the spool speed is the highest, the magnetic brakes have their least effect on the cast. When the spool speed is high it can overcome the magnetic force that is being applied to the spool and cause some nasty problems at the beginning of the cast. When the speed of the spool begins to slow the magnetic braking has the most effect on the spool and provides a more controlled spool speed. Many anglers prefer centrifugal braking for casting distance where you are throwing baits that benefit from long distance casts, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and rattle traps come to mind. Spool speed is high and the centrifugal brakes help control the spool speed. Magnetic brakes work well with pitching and flipping, where spool speeds are not as high, and the magnetic force has good control over the spool. These speeds may be too low for the centrifugal brakes to have much effect. Obviously these braking systems will work for either type of casting, you only need to understand where you will need to use your thumb more to help control the cast. Centrifugal at the end of the cast and magnetic at the beginning of the cast. One thing that will aid in being successful at casting long distances without backlash using magnetic brakes is a smooth casting action, don't snap your wrist as hard during the beginning of the cast and generate that very fast spool speed, steady smooth cast will get you a very good distance with magnetic brakes without backlash. IMHO the best of both worlds is dual braking, you have some control over how much braking you would like at the beginning of the cast and also at the end. Hope this helps, good luck with your transition as you call it.

  31. Huh? First off, adding weight means you're no longer throwing weightless lures. Weighted plastics catch fish, but they're no longer weightless. Secondly, why exactly do you think big fish are not caught on weightless plastics?

  32. I took one of my Grandson's fishing one evening a couple days ago, gave him his choice of where he wanted to go, the river where we get big cats, a small lake where we get Bass, or a little Lake we never fished. He wanted to check out the new water. In an hour and a half later we had 2 big blue gill 10" and 14 Perch all nice most over 12" . Yesterday I took his brother to see if it was a flook or if IT was a "Perch Honey Hole" 20 min. away from home that we had never knew about. It paid of we got 24 this time and all over 11". I don't know when "we will go back" go back, but now I'm sure this will be "OUR" secret Perch hole. first trip day 2

  34. I have this Powell max 683c that you are mentioning. There's actually an old review about it on tackletour believe it or not and I agree with their findings. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfastpg2.html I disagree about needing to bump up to the endurance line. This rod does not leave much left to be desired. Don't get me wrong, it does not fish like my NRX 803c, however, for what I paid for it I am more than happy. This rod is an excellent utility rod. It does just about everything that I throw at it (within reason). Its rated as extra fast, I find the action to not be as fast as some other XF rods I own. I would say it is a little slower. I dislike the lack of a foregrip, but that is a personal preference issue. With the light CH50mg it balances well and is a light rod overall. The sensitivity is well above par for its price point. What I find to be the best thing about this rod is its versatility. I can do just about any technique within the 1/4-1/2oz range. That is the upside about this not having a true XF tip. It can handle lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, t-rigs, jigs, jerkbaits, topwater etc. etc. It is a utility rod. I put monofilament line on it and let it cover techniques that my other rods aren't dedicated for. This rod finds a solid place within a lineup of higher quality rods in my lineup. I don't think you can go wrong with this rod.

  35. Quality crankbaits for sure - good enough hooks, good finishes, all of mine have run true (so far). The Deep Little N is my "go to" for it's depth range and I use it the most. I also toss Fat Boys, Thin Ns, NXSs, and DD22's as well. This DLN is having a bit of a finish issue..................but then it's on the north side of 100 bass caught. Caught a bass on it yesterday...

  37. Learn to tie good knots quickly instead of using a snap swivel on every lure you mentioned. The snap swivel causes you more trouble when casting your lures as it allows the line to tangle with hooks or blades in flight. Tying leaders on lures creates 2 knots to fail. There isn't an upside to use snap swivels with most bass lures with one exception; inline spinners. Using a good quality snap for deep diving crankbaits shouldn't affect the lures performance. Practice tying a few good knots like the Palomar and San Diego Jam knots, both take less than 30 seconds. Tom

  42. After being bored out of my mind reading about the merits and disadvantages of F/C line which I don't use any way, I decided to read some reel reviews. Reviews are very mixed, one reason I normally pay little attention to them. One person loves the battle, another says they corrode while a third says they have corrected that issue. I read a review by a charter captain that swears the conflict is the best reel Penn makes. You are going to read reviews declaring nothing better than a Shimano spheros or Quantum boca in this price range, I've owned most of them and I'm confused just typing this out. Any time I see the word "best" that's a review I find suspect, I don't think best exists. If you want technical info ask 0119, he has a good handle on that stuff, me I just catch fish. I don't recommend specifics, I could come up with reels not even mentioned that are very good too. Your money your decision.

  43. Stand on bank. Cast into water. If no bite, cast to your right. If still no bite, walk down the bank. Repeat process. If still no bite, rob a liquor store or sell a kidney to generate enough cash flow to fix troll motor. Always remember.....the BEST fishing spots will get you a trespassing ticket and a summons to appear if caught.
