  2. I've been using a new spinnerbait for about a month now and I have to say, I have never had a bait change my opinion about a new design to an old standby as this bait has. StrikeBack™ spinnerbait by MegaStrike is the only one I've had tied on my spinnerbait rod for over two weeks now and I don't intend to cut it off except to retie. Needless to say, it has not only become my favorite new design but my new favorite all around. A number of things about this bait jump out at you when you see it for the first time. The swivel head that pivots and the dimpled, painted blade are just two. I've been a fan of hammer finished blades for years and have been painting my own for a number of years, so that feature wasn't anything new to me or the market. The pivoting head is what sets this bait apart from others. I don't think the person that designed it actually realized it's potential. Aside from keeping a hooked fish from gaining leverage to throw the bait, it allows you to burn the bait without it rolling on it's side. That eliminates changing baits to something heavier or with smaller blades. This was the first thing that impressed me. What impresses me the most is the enjoyment of fighting a fish hooked on this bait. It intensifies the fight you experience similar to the way braided line increases sensitivity. When a fish shakes it's head, because of the head design, it's able to swing more and when the head stops pivoting the angler feels a pronounced thump you just don't feel with a standard spinnerbait. Trust me, the first time you hook a fish on this bait, you won't believe the enjoyment you'll experience bringing it in.

  3. Set the hook faster and if the fish is still gut hooked, see below...... Do not just cut the line! If this is the only thing you ever learn from Bass Resource, please practice and master this technique..... 1) With the hook in the gullet, note which side of the fish's mouth the hook shank is toward. Note: For illustration sake, the line is eliminated here in steps 2 through 5. In reality, the line stays connected as this technique is performed. (2) With a finger or two, reach in through the last gill arch on that side of the fish and push and pull down on the hookeye so the hook turns and . . . (3) rolls out below the gill toward the side of the fish. At that point, amazingly, the hook, barb and all, almost always pops free from its hold in the fish's gullet. (4) Reach into the fish's mouth and grip the bend in the hook (which is now up) and . . . (5) lift it free. If the fish's mouth is too small to reach in with your hand, use a needle-nose pliers to grip the hook bend. What needs to be emphasized is how resilient a fish's gills actually are -- far from being the fragile organs often suggest by some sources. And the occasional bleeding fish? Does it have to be kept? Just get the fish back into the water as soon as possible and, more often than not, the bleeding stops. Jeff

  5. Just sitting here reading a Nov. Dec. 1971 issue of Bassmaster magazine, and reminiscing. I remember when I first got into bass fishing, there was no bassresource, no dedicated bass fishing magazines, just the occasional bass fishing article in one of the big three outdoor magazines. Then along came Bassmaster. I was fascinated with it. I think I got my first issue in 1969. The bass to me just seemed so magical and mysterious. I devoured every article and every bass fishing ad in every issue. I rarely caught any, but just couldn't give up. At some point, it all came together and I began to have some measure of success. These old magazines make me wish I could do it all over. I love the old ads. Old lures that are no longer available and most of the time back then I couldn't afford most of them anyway. But it was exciting when I could round up the cash for a new lure. I now buy whatever I want, and fish with top of the line tackle, but I don't think I have more fun than I did when it was brand new to me. Sorry if this is boring but I'm just an old guy looking back and remembering my good ole days. Hootie

Did Arrowhead yesterday almost 3 dozen in the schooly size 1-3 lbs. air temp was 55 but water temp was 68-70, today heading to Moose Pond for the first time with a good friend. Hoping to do Great East Sunday. Will have bass thumbs for sure this week.

  8. Being deployed can certainly be challenging, try to keep in mind why you are there and what is being accomplished. Stay positive and make it as enjoyable as possible for yourself and those around you. After 20 years in the Military and being deployed to some very undesirable locations, I look back at it and the bonds that were formed, and it was special. Hang in there, what you are doing is far more important than fishing.

  10. After seeing all of the cool modifications of jon boats on this site, and on youtube, I decided to modify a jon boat of my own. I started by messaging 00 Mod, and he answered all of the questions I had, and sent me some pics of some of his own jon boat modifications. So far, I have added carpeted seats, a rear casting deck, a built in cooler, rod holders, and bungee cord mounts, so i can strap everything down. A couple of weeks ago I found a Lowrance LMS 330c fishfinder and I picked it up for 10 bucks. I made a mounts for it, hooked it up on the boat, and it works great! The Jon boat, is powered by a Minn Kota C2 30 and it gets along just find on small ponds and lakes. The battery, and other miscellaneous items can be stored under the rear casting deck, which is easily removed. I have attached some pics.

  12. We had a lot of fun and caught a lot of fish. Chris and I got down early Thursday and put in at Wolf Creek. Chris caught a stocky 16" fish on a buzzbait his 3rd cast and that was the last bass either of us caught until about 10. We fished all kinds of baits and different areas looking for fish with a couple misses and lost fish to show for it. We ran down towards Honey Creek and decided to stop in a smaller cove on the way there. I had been fishing a 1/2oz brush jig in Texas craw but decided to switch to a 7/16oz finesse jig in PB&J. We opted for a bank with chunk rock mixed with small gravel in hopes of finding fish that were just finishing spawning. They must have been as we finally started to catch some fish! I found a brushpile with my jig and after 3 repeated cast finally caught my first bass of the trip. After that I went on a hot streak with several more fish, most of them keepers, that were thumping my jig. One of my biggest from Thursday. You can see from my line that it had swallowed my jig too. Most of the banks we fished looked like the one in the background with a little more chunk rock mixed and and quite a few docks. We ran to Honey Creek and decided to crank the riprap of the bridge, that was a good move, lots of fish like this one on a DT6. Also caught a couple nice ones off the Honey Creek Resort dock pilings. After that it got really tough tough. I think we went without a keeper, and not many shorts either, for the next few hours. After hitting several spots in Honey Creek we ran to Courthouse Hollow where the cabin is. The first cut we tried produced 3 keepers on a wacky rig. When we came out that cut it had started to lightning and thunder so we ran back and loaded up. Friday we made the drive to the dam to fish new water. We decided to start in Duck Creek, best move we made. We had 12-15 pounds in the boat in the first 15 minutes, catching at least one keeper and up to 3 off almost every dock we fished in the first little cut. Wacky rigs and poppers were doing serious work in the morning. Chris got our biggest spot of the trip out from under a walkway on a wacky rig. The walkways and banks that looked like the one behind him in 8-14 feet of water were key for us. Our plastics had to have some purple in them to, from purple color to purple flake. Friday was a crazy day with between 75-100 fish coming to the boat on a variety of baits. It actually got to the point we were seeing what they wouldn't eat on our shakyheads or Rocker heads, we didn't find much they wouldn't eat. Over half the fish we caught were keepers as well. We tried Drowning Creek for awhile and only caught a couple dinks and one keeper before we went to Lawhead Hollow. Keepers started coming to the boat quickly again including our biggest of the day at 3.96 pounds on a magnum trick worm and Rocker head. Saturday we decided to go back to Duck after the great day on Friday. We had to work a lot harder for them Saturday but the quality was a little better. We had a limit by about 8:30 and culled one shortly after that before hitting a long dry spell of either shorts or no fish. We ran around to some different areas we hadn't fished before and found nothing. With about 2 hours left we ran back to the same stretch of docks in Duck, doing the same thing, and culled 2 more times including our second biggest of the day. Chris and I ended up with 15.78 pounds for day 1. Scroggs and Zander had a successful day with both of them catching keepers. Sunday we decided to have everyone launch from the same ramp in Courthouse Hollow near the Cabins. Chris and I had very little to go off since we hadn't fished there much but we decided to look for stuff that looked the same and it paid off. We ran into Dinosaur and fished into a little cut. Biggest problem we were having was short fish. I was catching short spots about every cast with a Zell pop and wacky rig. Lost a keeper largemouth at the boat on a wacky rig before boating a keeper on the Zell pop. We fished all the way to the back of the cut before Chris caught a solid fish on a 10" worm. We picked up another keeper on a wacky rig before running over to the east side of Shangri-La Marina. We caught 3 more keepers, including our biggest of the day, and culled twice, all on a 10" candy bug Zoom Ol' Monster on a Rocker head. Ran to one more cove where we culled again before heading back to Courthouse where we culled one last time about 5 minutes before weigh in. Chris and I had almost 30 pounds in 2 days for first place. Jon and Christopher were in second with around 25 pounds and Christopher had big bass for the weekend with a 4lb 15oz fish on a wacky rig. The motley crew that was left by final weigh in.

I have been using 1 gallon Ziplock bags and separating the plastics by type (stick baits in one bag, lizards in another, etc.) I think it makes it easier for me to locate what I am looking for, and because I bank fish, I can quickly grab several bags and put them in my cargo pockets and be on my way. I store all different brands together; doesn't seem to affect them.

  19. Let me say this again for those that weren't listening... The blue gills are spawning. What this means is fish where the gills are spawning and throw something that looks like a blue gill either in shape or color or both. Blue gills spawn on hard bottoms. Buggy whips are a good indication of hard sand bottom. OR Throw a heavy weighted carolina rig and find the shell areas. This is how you can catch a lot of fish in June, in Florida.

  20. I believe that the Rage Rig article doesn't state that a RageTail bait is necessary to be used when Rage Rigging... And over the years, I've made it extremely clear that most ANY soft plastic (and especially those which are normally T-Rigged, C-Rigged or rigged weightless) can be fished Rage Rigged, with emphasis on the high action soft plastics being more effective in most situations, IMO. "Keel weighting Hooks" in the distant past were not termed Swimbait hooks as they are today, because neither the hook or the swimbait baitfish style plastics were being produced or utilized at that time. As far as the "Swimbait" hook being the style of the hook used for todays soft plastic swimbaits, this isn't called a SWIMBAIT RIG, as swimbaits are used with any and all styles of hooks ie trebles etc. and come in any and all sizes. Fishing terms and lingo regarding rigs came from styles of hooking and weighting systems to present baits. As with T-rigs, C-rigs etc., any variety of hooks styles and/or weights can be used, but the individual term and RIG reflects or designates the basic hook and weight position, line attachment, use etc. I started adding split shot and elongated tag end line weights (squeeze weights) to the belly of the hook many years ago to improve my opportunities in certain conditions to change the fall profile with standard soft plastic worms, creatures etc, which allowed me to catch more fish. This style of rigging is what is now termed Rage Rig and not necessarily fished to SWIM the bait through the variety of depths in the water column, but more over allowing the bait to fall more horizontally through the water column and bottom bump, allowing the bait to maintain the horizontal profile throughout, whether being dragged, jumped, bumped etc. This rig provides less snags in any and all types of bottom structure including grass which allows us to fish the different types of structure more thoroughly and as slow or quickly as the fish tell us they want. Hope that helps and answers a few questions

  23. Leo and I fished the KOTG Classic Sunday out of Holiday Park. We were pretty pumped when they drew "Holiday" in the selection meeting Saturday night, because Leo and I have been pretty much wrecking em out there. The smallest five fish limit we've weighed out there since March has been 28lbs, breaking 30 pretty much every time out there. On Sunday, though, we came up a little bit short....caught 29.75lbs, with a dead fish penalty that took us to 29.25. Winner was Tim Feller/Scott Crowe with 32.5. It wasn't for lack of trying. Leo and I ran well over 50 miles on the day hitting every stretch we had from the fingers, to the alley, to L68 and all the way down L67. It was a weird day...we caught more than a dozen fish on the day over 5lbs, but only one over 6lb (6lb 4oz). We just could not get the bigger bites that we'd been getting over the past two months. It's a weird feeling having almost 30lbs in the well at noon and feeling like you are not on the fish you need to win. Just goes to show what an awesome fishery Holiday Park is. Congrats to Tim and Scott. Very worthy champions.

  28. RoLo I enjoy your posts. I can say this with almost complete confidence, if there are no baitfish present your chances of catching any number of bass in a certain area diminish greatly, Maybe I am just a lucky guy, when I find balls of baitfish in the correct depth of water, I almost always find bass nearby.

My grandmother had one and one time I went from crawling on my knees to playing basketball in an hour. (Yes I was a LOT younger then!) lol I was always going to have her write me in for that in her will but never got around to it. If I could find one now I'd probably buy one for peace of mind. When I have checked before all they had was heated ones. That was some time ago and before the internet's current state of prominence.

I use the broneye frog and for years the new out of the package frogs didn't hook fish as well as my older wore out ones. so what I do now when I purchase a new one I take the frog out of the package and squeeze and play with the plastic making it more pliable and softer. ill sit there and work the bait with my hands for 30 minutes or so; so I know its nice and soft and easy to flex for when a bass comes up and eats it. now I rarely miss a fish on them

  47. About 3 weeks ago I bought a lunker frog and I was dying to try it out. A customer of mine had given me permission to fish his private farm pond weeks earlier. I always catch fish there, it's inevitable. But, there is this one corner that is always covered with moss and earlier times I was there I seen a big fin come out of the water and large ripples under the moss. So I knew I had to try that spot. I caught 6 LMB all over 13" in 2 hours. One fish was my personal best which is my avatar. It was supposed to be my wifes first fish, but I took the rod from her to show her how to throw the frog, and BOOM! I was shaking for probably 30 minutes. The earlier fish had me giggling and jumping around like a little kid, but this fish was magnificent. I let it go and ended the night with sending the picture to pretty much every person in my contstcs list on my phone. Man that was a good night!

If you can honestly say it happened at work at a specific date and time and you let your boss know you may have a workers' comp claim. Otherwise it is your health insurance. Please do not fool around with your back. Get it looked at and have the X-rays and MRIs completed like yesterday. Keep us posted and have your wife keep us posted while you are recovering from surgery!!!
