  2. Well I went and managed to score my new PB Northern Pike. Pike's measurements were 32.5" long and weighted 8.5lbs, was released quickly after the photo was taken. If you have this species of fish near you I highly suggest you give them a target from time to time. They hit like a runaway freighttrain.

  10. There´s no such thing as Shimano VS Daiwa, there´s Shimano AND Daiwa, the problem is trying to figure out which one you are going to purchase first.

  11. Hi Folks, Thought some of you might enjoy this: Those are my rods. Left to right: I wanted the smallest reel I could find for my Ultralight. It ended up being a Pflueger. The rod is an older Berkely Limited Edition I bought back in the '90s sometime when I broke the tip on my previous ultralight. Next is an Abu Garcia 4-screw Ambassadeur 5000. I bought this one and fixed and cleaned it. The rod is a Daiwa Spinnerbait rod I bought as a teenager, again in the 1990s. I remember I was attracted to it because it has "Bill Dance" on it. Heh. It's a good rod, though, and the only thing I hate about it is that the guides are slightly canted counter-clockwise. To the right of it is an Ambassadeur 5600Mag on a 7' Lightning Rod. Dad didn't like it and gavie it to me. (I in turn bought him a Silver Max and put it on a Lightning Rod; he prefers the reel handles be on the left side so he can work the rod right-handed.) The Black Max on the Saturn Rod is a medium weight rig. It's an experiment I just set up this year, and I'm not sure how much I like it. I don't like longer rods with the longer handles. The way I hold them, the handles get in my way when working a lure. Next up is my dad's Ambassadeur 5000 from the '70s. It's the first reel I remember him using and sat for the longest time on the Lew's Speed stick next to it. I rebuilt it and put it on an Ugly Stick I had laying around. I need to get a heavier rod and reinstall the fast gears he had in it (they went in the one on the left because his needed a new frame.) I also need to find a new reel handle as that small one isn't really usable for me. Next is Dad's old Quantum. It replaced his Ambassadeur 5000 and he since replaced it with a newer Quantum with the reel handle on the side he prefers, so he let me have the old one. I rebuilt it and put it on Dad's old fiberglass "Lew's Speed Stick". I heard tell some folks prefer fiberglass for cranking, and that's what this one is aimed towards. We'll see if I like it. Finally, that's a graphite Fenwick rod. I had to repair the tip; it was Dad's as well. The reel was Grandpa's. I still fish it now and again. Currently the line is stripped and I'll probably be finding some Dacron braid for it. Believe it or not, it casts almost right along with the free-spooling baitcasters, but the gear noise is hard on the ears when it's thrown out that far. ___ Of these, the three on the left have been used most, though this year the 5600 was out of action until recently. It somehow suffered a blow to the left side that took out the sideplate, magnet holder, and axle; I had to order parts and rebuilt it. This year the ultralight and the four-screw 5000 have seen the most use, with the Black Max trailing as I get used to it. The Ultralight has accounted for the most bass this year,, followed by the Ambassadeur 5000 three-screw mounted on the Daiwa Spinnerbait Rod. Those combos are the two I've had longest. Josh Edited: That's a 5600. That's what I get for posting sleepy.

  14. Been so busy lately haven't been on for a while, looks like everyone is getting on some fish. Congrats Maine on the may competition and Nev you caught some nice fat ones. Welcome to the site rippinlips. So far this year haven't been able to do much serious fishing, but have been able to fish some with my kids. Couple of weekends ago my second to youngest got his first bass on an artificial bait, my youngest learned how to kayak and my second oldest got her second biggest LM, a fat 15 1/2 incher. While I would like to get some serious fishing in, fishing with them (while i dont get to fish much) is still great, some great memories for them and me. Did get to go to a small local pond yesterday for about an hour and a half, caught 8 LM biggest was only 17", water temps are warming up quick, cant wait to get on some bigger water. Tight lines everyone and hope we all have some nice ones this month

  16. Not sure i would try it, but it is not because of your car's motor. I would have no concerns about your engine being able to tow that boat. Those 3.8's (3800 series II???) are some of the most dependable engines that GM has ever made and they are workhorses. For me, the greater worry is in your transmission. I doubt that it is geared to handle that kind of strain. It is a reasonably light boat, so I am up in the air on this one, but i'd probably stay on the safe side and not chance it.

  17. Well I think you weights are a little light. I have fished for trophy pike for at least the last 20 years. A trophy pike usually starts at 44 inches & 20 lbs. My best pike went 49 " and weighed 32bs. I have caught 46.5 " that weighed 26.5 lbs. My pike buddy caught a 46" that weighed 29 lbs. My 2nd best weighed 27lbs & measures 47". I have included a 24ber & 23 lber all bigger than your 25lbers. Take a look at the pics & you decide. Big pike fight like big pike not like 8-10 lbers. Since I have been pike fishing I have totaled over 50 pike over the 20 lb mark as a minimum. Say what you want but don't bull sheet me about pike.

  21. The S, SX, BCX, all of the new pure fishing garcia rounds are CRAP!! I have a 5601 BCX that is pure junk, I look at my older round reels 5501-83, 6500-83, all with the raised Abu emblem, and engraved side plates. Pure joy to fish heavy baits with. Now a days with the custom upgrading/tweeking we can do, they can on the smaller reels (2500,3500,4500,4600, even some 5000') throw 1/4oz baits... As stated you would do better getting any of the 4500C3, 4600C3 (narrow spool) for light baits, 6500C4, 7000C4 (wide spool) for heavy baits . Again the S, SX, BCX all junk... The .02¢ of an old service tech..... Tight Lines!

  27. i have never had that problem either. i get multiple fish on all my rage tail plastics. ive even flipped them upside down and fished them, torn some off the end to get fresh hook spots on a t-rig, and fished them with one claw or no claws where bass or bluegill bit them off and still caught fish on the rage craws and baby rage craws. but still, never just had a claw fly off on the cast...

  30. I throw a wide variety of lures during the post-spawn, but you asked for the 'favorite'. I'm sure the answer can vary regionally, so my response addresses central Florida. For the past 15 years, our most effective post-spawn lure has been the "Swim Minnow" (aka: soft swimbait & paddletail minnow). I've found that during the post-spawn, 'weedless', 'subsurface' & 'minnow-shaped' are 3 important lure properties. I doubt there's a soft swim minnow I haven't tried, but my first crush was on the Berkley 6" Hollow-Belly Swimbait The 6" Hollow-Belly is no longer available, but is still available in 5". Other swim minnows we've found very effective are the Berkley Split-Belly, Basstrix Paddletail, Lake Fork Magic Shad & Deps Deathadder Shad (sadly discontinued). My main squeeze today and the mack daddy of Florida's post-spawn period has been the Gambler Big EZ (forty niner). Roger

  31. Have fun! If you like baseball, you'll love the whole town. 3 Braves are among the newest inductees! Glavine, Maddux, and Bobby Cox. And of course, the "Big Hurt" Frank Thomas. La Russa and Torre were also inducted. Kind of cool to see Cox, Torre and La Russa get inducted in the same year. The last of the generation of managers that I watched as a kid. 3 of the greatest as well.

  36. Aren't the Duckett pros you listed below doing absolutely the same thing? Are you really going to tell me that a $150-200 Duckett rod will outperform the $350 Champion series? The build quality aren't even in the same ball park. The OP should ask more specific question such as comparing the brands at specific price range or specific series of rod, since comparing two brands only leads to biased and uninformative answers.

  42. Soft plastics are different than hard baits. Hard baits you feel a big hit, and the can feel the lure stop moving. A hit on a soft plastic more often that not is just a "tap-tap" or a subtle "thump" in the handle of the rod. My guess is you are getting bit, but just not feeling the hit and by that time the bass has spit the plastic. If you're not getting bit on a senko, then something is askew...

  45. After a late night last night I decided to sleep in just get u and go fishing when ever I woke up. I arrived at the boat launch at 8 am. The parking lot was full. there were 14 boats already launched. I almost decided to go somewhere else but decided to go for it anyway, I was already there. I launched my boat and just started fishing. It certainly was a slow start. I assumed the northeast wind had something to do with the poor fishing. I just kept plugging along catching a fish every now and then but nothing of any size. I spoke with a couple of guys fishing in there boats and they said it had been a really slow morning. Then the wind picked up pretty good. It stared blowing 10-15 mph out of the northeast. It started getting a bit choppy out on the water. A few boats left once the wind had kicked up, then it began to rain. Most people decided to call it a day. I elected to stay. After an hour or so the wind calmed down significantly and the rain stopped. A front had just passed and the bass were biting ! The afternoon bite was insanely good. I had the place to myself for the most part. Sometimes it pays to tough it out and stay with it. I caught 27 largemouth and 1 smallmouth for the day, as well as a bunch of pickerel. Lunker fof the day. 6 lbs 0 oz 21.75 inches 5-8 5-6 5-1 Got a 4-1 and 5 between 3-4 lbs as well but didn't take any pics of them. It was an amazing way to end an incredible month for me, 19 bass over 5 lbs for the month. Hopefully June will be just as awesome !

  47. I will answer your question from the practical perspective. I will leave the technical stuff to other anglers who are much better versed than I am in that dept. I look for light quality gear (rods and reels) because I tend to fish for long periods of time. 7-9hrs straight. Needless to say over this time fatigue can set in. Heavier gear will expedite fatigue on the water imho, thus shortening your time on the water. Fatigue leads to sloppiness. Somehow the big bass wait for this happen to strike..... LOL

  48. I prefer to approach fishing points casting from shallow to deep and working up the point. It's easier for me to maintain bottom contact and when hooking a fish, they have a tendency to head for deeper water. That means they're moving away from me when I'm playing them rather than them coming at me. There are only two times that I fish a point from deep to shallow and that's during the spring and when I'm using cranks which will stay in the zone longer that way than bringing them up the drop. Either way, if I establish a depth pattern, I'll move and cast parallel to the drop so my presentation stays at that depth for the majority of the cast.
