  1. 3 days 3 tarpon, my 4th in the last 2 weeks, not too shabby. My first 2 poons were juveniles about 20#, a real fun size and my 35 incher a few weeks ago was super, but all pale in comparison. This morning about 15 minutes before sunrise my fluke gets rapped big time, 4 jumps in the first 10 seconds or so, instantly I knew I had a nice tarpon. I had one thing going for me, the current was only about 6 or 7 knots which is slow for the inlet as the tide was nearing change. My new 7'6 Star mh rod, saddled with a Cabo 40 reel loaded with 20# PP and 30# leader was up to the task, question being was I. After a 25 minute battle with about 6 runs that question was answered, yes I was. I get this magnificent beast along side the seawall, being as the law requires tarpon over 40" not be taken from the water, I want a photo op. Too big for a pier net so this fellow throws his cast net over, 3 of us could not lift the fish, I break it off and that's that. I think maybe 70 or 80 but who knows for sure, a great thrill none the less. A little topper on the day, an hour later I land a 40" cuda.........child's play, lol. This soon to be 69 year old will be back again tomorrow, to try and do it all over again, yes I'm a bit sore.

  2. Got out of work a little early Friday and headed to Otter Lake. Super windy, patches of rain and some big swells made for a tough day especially in a kayak with no anchors. Managed 6 LM and 1 perch. Biggest was only 16.5 inches, still nice to finally get out. Sorry Mike cant help you on that one.

  4. That's right I said it. I'm done, I'm fed up with being a slave to something. I'm done with it draining my money and taking my time. And its the silent killer of my health.. how can I be a role model to young people around me when I'm doing this.... I quit smoking over the weekend. After finally "getting mad at it" and a lot of prayer I've been able to WANT to quit bad enough that it hasn't bothered me yet. I've been chewing a lot of gum. I am going have to lay off the coffee and beer for a while....coffee and a smoke was my thing. Yall keep me in your prayers. I've been smoking since I was 15 and this isnt gonna be easy

  5. I had a blast, as usual. This was my seventh RoadTrip, and, like every time, I made some new friends. I roomed with Fishing Rhino and Dinky. It was a complete hoot hangin' with these two old codgers. Thanks guys for a memorable event. Thanks to Glenn, Keri, and the rest of the Bass Resource crew, for another great trip. It's time to start planning for next year's trip, and I would encourage any member who's been on the fence about joining this group for another adventure, to get off the fence, and sign up. When I left Sunday morning I was in the lead for big fish with a 5.9 largemouth. One tenth more, and it would have been the first six I've caught in several years. There were at least a dozen folks fishing Sunday morning, so I expect a bigger fish was caught to knock me out of first place. Just wait until you see the fish 00mod caught on a crankbait. If I hadn't seen the pic, I would not have believed it.

  6. No real giants for me this trip, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Had a great time with old and new friends. Jigs were the ticket for sure. Caught 90% of my fish on Siebert jigs. Jeff

  11. Did Sebago after not fishing it for 20 yrs got 2 fish for 4.71 added to the team standings, my biggest was 3.5 lb LM. Crazy Crazy day weather wise wind, rain. heavy rain and hail even watched my line float in the air because of all the static charge in the air.

  12. Although I don't want to, I'm putting tourneys, and possibly bass fishing, on the back burner until I can get my shoulder fixed once and for all. Did some crappie fishing today the sounds of crappie love are in the air. We sorted thru small males to get 6 decent sized females. My dad who is a pro when it comes to live bait LOL was getting drum as well. Even got a 2.5lb bass. I still haven't caught a bass this year. Just walleyes and crappies. I did pitch a jig for a little while and got one good bite. I happened to be on the phone with the ol' lady and needless to say I lost it.

  15. Well I will stir the pot a little, there is nothing wrong with little round reels like these Conquest 50 DC...They are mounted on a NRX 802C and 803C which I use since I am not fishing real deep water..... If you do not like DC reels you could got with a Conquest 50 like this.........

  22. Paddle fish are filter feeders, Bill. In this case, color made no difference. The only important thing for hooking one is a sharp hook. After that, it's all fish fighting skill. I've hooked 25 lb+ carp, and that's a ride. I can't imagine catching something as big as Jeff's fish. Crazy.

  23. It IS a magical place. I will be there 2 or 3 days this weekend. The tournament didn't go quite as planned yesterday on Sebago. We finished in 5th place out of 16 boats.

  28. Don't let the other posters get you down. I own a GL2 granted I do think they are over priced at retail but for 120 that isn't bad. I like my GL2 won't say it's my favorite, but it has it's place in my arsenal. It is plenty sensitive for for bottom contact.

  30. Well , only got 3 1/2 hrs in today , sustained winds above 30 mph , I dunno what the gusts were but they were pretty wicked . Water was 60 at the surface , stained to partly stained , fish were all mixed up , some suspended , some on the flats , suspended , some coming in for the spawn , some on the bottom but very tight lipped , started out with jigs for the ones one the bottom , got 3 that way , 4.1 , 4.8 , 5.4 , tried going after the suspended ones but to no avail , just could not hold the position , secondary points were my focus , seems most all the activity was on these points that had hard bottom areas , no discernible breaks that I could see , I changed up when I could not find what they wanted , they certainly were not in the mood to chase , I caught the next two on a LC pointer suspending JB , first one went 5.7 , last one of the day , 6.6 , brutal day to be out , lost one reel to my inability to control my balance and stepped on the darn thing , lost my LC pointer on the very next cast because of a wind knot , it was just too much after that , boat control was insane !!

  31. Magic magic mushrooms What! Magic magic mushrooms what! I can hear colors and taste sounds! Son, I'm way to high to drive to the Devils house right now. Maybe the blue kangaroo in the corner can take us though. We mustn't keep the Devil waiting. He's got some Oompa Loompas and Leprechauns smoking pixie dust over there waiting for us.

  32. I ended up motorizing my kayak with a minn kota 30. Had to register here in VA. No biggie. Makes a huge difference in getting places, keeping "hands-free" when fishing in certain areas, etc. Wife and kids want a boat -- for skiing and such. I'd prefer to stick with the yak. LOL

  33. I was in the same situation and went kayak. I was realistic in my expectations when figuring out which would work. Sure i might take someone out with me a few times a year but the majority of time i would be solo and moving a jon boat around isn't as easy as throwing my kayak on the roof of the jeep. The other piece i considered was having to register the jon boat because of a motor....not much money but the added hassle of doing that and then if i trailered the jon boat i would have to register that too, again, not a huge deal but one more thing. Then there is maintenance on the trailer as well. I went with a kayak and just picked up my 4th one in as many years after selling a few and buying some others Name brand kayaks hold their value extremely well for the most part and i have never sold one for less than 75% of what i bought it for. All that being said, I will eventually get a motor powered boat but it will most likely be a modified V so i can take out my soon to be 4 year old soon and fiancé but i can guarantee you that i will not be getting rid of the kayak when it happens.

  34. Definitely tradeoffs. You can take a friend with you in the jon boat. You can move the kayak by yourself to wherever. You can't with the jon boat. You can customize either with the layout you like to fish in. Portability. Kayak, hands down. Just my .02. I considered a jon boat before I decided on kayak fishing, too. No regrets at all going the kayak route.

  35. Well, the trip was a huge success. We had a camping spot right on the water, so we cast out and watched our bobbers while we played board games and things. He caught about 30 bluegill and a couple crappie. The first morning we were there, he woke me up at 6:30 and asked if we could start fishing. Second morning we slept later, but again, he wanted a line in the water the moment he woke up. By the end, he was casting his spinning rod with confidence (and giving me a pretty good ribbing about catching more fish than me). Thanks, guys -- we had a blast.

  36. If people get too close while bank fishing I just break out my "around the world" cast. Nothing gets someone's attention quite like having a set of trebles buzz by their head a time or two.

  37. Today was an amazing day of fishing on my favorite lake. Got to the launch, step out of the truck and there is a turkey gobbling at me in full strut 100 yards away. That was pretty cool. I launched the boat about 8 am and the water was 50 degrees. The fishing was amazing today. Fish # 1 19 inch 3 lb 14 oz on a jig While I was fighting this fish to the boat there were two GIANTS that followed her in. They were actually trying to get the jig out of that fishes mouth. So I back off the spot and a couple casts later I caught this fish. Fish # 2 21.75 inches 6 lbs 2 oz on a jig A couple casts later I get another hit. It is huge. Much bigger then the 6-2. I fought it a while. Got it her to the boat. I cant see my jig. She must have inhaled it. I reach down and grab the net. Moments before I am about to net her.. She opend her mouth and y jig just comes out. Bummer. She was around 8 lbs with out a doubt. That was sad. I move up 10 yards or so from where those fish were and I cast my jig out to shore. Bump. another big bass I on. Fish # 3 20 inches 5 lbs 6 oz The fishing was really good for an hour at this particular spot. I caught a lot of fish of this one spot and good ones too. I caught fish over 3 lbs on a jig, spinnerbait, senko, smoked grub and crankbait. After the bite died down I decided to try another spot, to give this spot a rest for a couple hours. After another 30 minute run with my trolling motor.... First cast. Fish # 4 22 inches 5 lbs 14 oz. Unfortunately she was kind of skinny. I wish she had some more girth. After landing that fish and a couple quick pics I cast back to the same spot. Before the jig hits bottom the line jumps. I set the hook. Immediately a big bass around 6 lbs goes airborne and spits my quick back at me. I make my way back to my first spot. I caught a few more fish and was about to go to another spot when I got a nice hit on a crankbait. Fish # 5 20 inch 5 lb 6 oz What a fatty ! Big smallmouth for the day, 3 lbs 1 oz It was an amazing day. Landed 19 largemouth and 10 smallmouth. 11 of the largemouth were over 3 lbs and 1 of the smallmouths. Biggest 5 bass went 26 lbs 6 oz. I am pretty bummed out about losing the 8 lber just as I was about to net it. I caught 3 lb plus fish on every lure I had tied on today. If I didn't have a tournament on Sebago tomorrow I definitely would be going back !

  38. When I use to use RI beavers, I split the tails 100% of the time. Perhaps one of my posts was one you read singing the praises of these baits...no doubt , they catch fish BUT, I switched to another bait (Havoc Pit Boss) and they work as well if not better.....Plus I don't have to be embarrassed to tell my wife and/or kids the names of the baits/colors I use and want them to pick up for me if they are near the tackle store....IDK, maybe it's just me, but I find it far easier to explain to my 9 year old daughter what a Black/Blue Pit boss is , than a Sweet beaver 4.20 in Penetration, or Skinny Dipper in Money shot....I am not "upstanding morals for all" guy, but for some reason, this bothered me this winter, so I rid myself of R.I. products, it was easier having tons of success last season with the Havoc stuff, but still, I probably would have done it anyways......rant over...............wow, way to get off topic. LOL

  40. What do you guys do when people decide to fish next to you within a few feet? I got a hard strike on my lucky spinner from Sieberts (stocking up on these haha) so since these guys invaded my space I yelled fish on! The bass took off and they left their lines in the water. Looked at me like I was dumb. If you take a look at the pic you can see two of their lines wrapped around mine haha. Ended up being a touch over 4lbs. Not super long but chubby. To free my line and the fish without hurting it I cut their lines. They didn't say anything and I handed them their lures back. I got a dirty look but was I wrong? My line, my reel, the fish, my leg were all tangled in their line and I felt I was being as courteous as they were to me. Tossing their line within three feet of my casts because they saw me catching and then when I said fish on they left it out there. Idk I could have been wrong but still. Good news was only I caught fish and lots of them. Just because they were throwing where I was doesn't mean they were showing the fish what they wanted. testing this new phone and posting pics on here finally.

  41. I thought I had lost this pic. I couldn't find it anywhere. I just found it about 5 minutes ago. I caught these last spring with my son on the boat with me. He caught a few fish that day but he was proud of the "big" ones, lol. These are some slab crappie. The one on the left was 2.4 and the one on the right was 2.13. I will get a replica made when I catch a 3 lber and I almost did.

  42. I have experience with the Stradic FI 1000 models, and the Lexa 2000 SH. Also other lower-end Shimanos, but I'll just compare the two mentioned. Like the management of both. Think both have great abilities. I use braid, so twist is not that big of an issue. Both lay braided line down just fine. Not the answer you were looking for, probably, but that's just my limited experience.

I don't know why this is so hard for you..................but then again I am the guy who suggested that he get taken to the woodshed...........bleeding hearts of the world unite in your fury against my stance but I have ZERO tolerance for drunks, and drug addicts, and there enablers....which, I am afraid to say, you just might be.
