  1. What bothers you more? That you suck at fishing or that even your wife can tell?

  2. No you don't. Learn your rivers! Got 5 of these guys about this size today... And one better one... I did not have one stitch of a hit on a jig or swimbait, so I went to a drop shot with a couple different baits, and started getting bites, but man, it was SLOW goin'! Had to drag and soak that sucker to get bit.

  3. I was hoping for a giant bass while on vacation in Florida and today it happened. This afternoon I reeled in the biggest bass by far that Ive ever caught. It pulled the scale down to over 11lbs.

  7. I completely agree. That favorite rod may or may not be one designed and marketed for that specific bait. I don't own one rod that is marketed as technique specific, because most of them start at a price above my budget. Having the "perfect" rod for a favorite technique does makes the experience more enjoyable IMO. Sure you can get by with the 3 rods RW always recommends or maybe you can do it all with only one combo, but why would you? Some seem to be offended that tackle companies market rods that don't appeal to them for a variety of reasons, including a technique specific designation or price. Does not make sense to me. I buy what I like that fits my budget. The market is what determines what the manufacturers will offer. I'm good with that.

  9. Back in the 60's and 70's, my old Ambassadeurs had a gear ratio of 3.5:1. I still caught bass using the same type of lures. Of course you have to realize, the bass were really stupid back then. Hootie

  10. Finally got a chance to go back to Philippines for a vacation and family reunion. Stayed half of the time in Makati, boy the whole place changed after 15 years. I could easily get lost here. Finally got to my sister's rest house in Caliraya Lake at Laguna. The road to the place I had a great time. The weather is Caliraya is fantastic. It's more of a rain forest setting, drizzle in the morning for half an hour and the sun comes out to brighten the day. It's always windy and the breeze cools the air. The house is between waters from the west and the east side. I got at least six black bass during my stay there. Most of them are caught in weightless 5" senko and 5" YUM worm. I tried all types of topwater lure to get a mud fish/snake head family but would not get them to bite. I actually have not spotted any. I think I found a place to retire: Thanks for reading

  12. Me and my son went to pickwick lake for a couple of days to camp and fish. The wind was bad but we managed to catch around 20 bass. All fish were caught on suspending jerkbaits. This was the best one of the trip. It was his first smallie and a good one at that! 3.02lbs

  13. Sister in law for sale. I'm tired of her and now excepting offers. She is 5ft tall and 5 ft round. Would probably make a good beach ball or pool float. Assuming you can get past the shrill whining and nagging. Has more health problems then a 90 year old hypochondriac. Least that's all I ever hear about. A sinus infection is the same as the rare Asiatic triple mosquito flu. Least I think that's the last thing she caught. I don't remember I wasn't really paying attention. Openly discusses female problems and other stuff I could really care less about. Maybe one of y'all would care more than myself. Cause I'm just a non caring ******* with a special place in hell reserved for me. Also really wants a child. Will not freaking shut up about it. After an hour of listening to her whine. I informed her I could make that a reality for her. She smacked me. I was just trying to be helpful. Honestly, I was just trying to shut her up so I could resume my fishing. Positive attributes. She can cook like a freaking champ. That's pretty much all I can think of. Possible uses. Beach ball or pool float. Dolphin call.(Her voice reaches pitches that only a dolphin could appreciate). Stick her on the front of a truck and you can smooth asphalt. Scare crow. Rare and made up disease encyclopedia. Actual encyclopedia.(She knows every d**n thing. Just ask her.) I'll start the bidding at some used bubble gum and a twig. I don't want to get my hopes up that I'm gonna get rich off this.

  14. The topic comes up occasionally or is often referred to. Some say it's just a marketing ploy, but I would disagree. Lots of guys ask for help selecting rods. My suggestion is to first build a base: http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/130634-rod-selection-the-basics/ Then over time we build on those fundamental tools. My recommendation for the next rod is something specific for your favorite presentation. Mine would be a dedicated jerkbait rod or swim jig rod. It's not that one of the basic three would not work just fine, now I'm looking for the "perfect" rod for something else.

  15. Ice went out on my secret pond yesterday and I broke out the Tatula frog rod for the first time. Really wasn't expecting to catch any fish, just wanted to give the new rod a try. I had a gen2 Premier on it with #50 samurai and was dragging a 3/8 ounce jig. Nice and light (already new that), great pitching rod. Tenth cast in and I get bit (nice little 1 pounder) 10 casts later I get bit again (3 pounder) and 5 casts later (2-1/2 pounder) great start to the year and a great trial run for the rod. A few more observations, very sensitive and a ton of backbone. The 3 pounder wasn't even a challenge but water temps was like 32.5. I got this rod for an all purpose heavy action rod and I think it's just that. Fished it side by side with my gen 1 Cumara and sensitivity was not too far behind. It's got a really stiff tip so you have to adjust you release point for an overhand cast but I expected that. All in all I think I'm going to be vary happy with it. Good thing as their are a couple of lighter Tatula sitting home waiting to go out.

  16. I can get used to this stuff lol. Today I stopped by a few neighborhood ponds and was throwing some Huddleston swimbaits. 2 bass decided to inhale the bait. One was over 6lbs and the other was a 28'' long Giant that weighed 10 3/4 lbs. I was told these community ponds can hold some monsters. I have a few more to try out in the morning or later today if I can't resist.

  18. techniuqe specific to me is having a favorite rod for each bait type you throw. I like it, because all I have to do is pick up another rod, instead of retieing. that, and I cant throw a 2oz swimbait on my shakyhead rod.

  23. I guess, just better for him, not you or I. I don't even change hooks anymore. Used to, but it got to where it seemed to me a major waste of time. I would never spend $50.00 on a handle for a reel that already had a perfectly good handle, but I can see why someone would, if that's what they wanted. Like Ricky Nelson sang, "you can't please eveyone, so you got to please yourself". Maybe he just really liked other features about the reel. Who knows, anyhow, that's all I got. Hootie

  24. Absolutely. I use Mega Strike, especially when they are barely taking the bait like they were yesterday. Very light, subtle bites, so I like to give them a little flavor to savor while I figure out I got a fish eatin' my stuff. Might only be responsible for an extra hookup or two, but hey, I'll take it!

  30. I have used braid since it was introduced and never had a problem with it digging in (all test strengths). Spool it very tightly using a lot of pressure (hold the line with a leather glove as you spool it). Likewise, I have also tied the end to a tree and walked off the entire length, then tightly respooled.

  33. No need for a leader unless you are fishing in super clear water or you have a lot of Pike/Muskie where you fish. If you really want one, 12 pound mono sounds good. Try Berkley Trilene Big Game mono, you won't be sorry.

  34. 1) 12# Fluoro 2) 10-12# Fluoro, can double up and use t rigs or other plastics 3) 50# braid Braid For 2, you can go either way, but fluoro i like better for that. For 3, 50# braid has always worked great for me, ive never snapped 50# and ive had that in THICK stuff, but you can go 65 if you want as well. Everyones going to have different answers and its honestly mostly personal preference. Good luck!!

  36. I've told this story before, but I'll repeat it. I used to fish a Tuesday Night team tournament where most of the teams were hooked on GYBC Hula Grubs, and dock talk always was shortened to only using the color number. After one tournament where my partner and I almost lapped the field for fish/weight, the question was "What Color?" Without missed a beat, my partner Tony replied "409 - Really Cleaned Up On Them!" The next week, one of the members came up to us laughing like crazy. He owned the local tackle store where most of the guys shopped. Seems almost everyone had come in looking for the color number that didn't exist!

  39. After years of working on the ocean, you can go cheap and buy often or you can just put down the cash and spend $100-$150 on a good quality set of rain gear that will last. Amazing we will spend hundreds on fishing rods but then go cheap when it comes to apparel. When you buy sunglasses do you buy the $10 set from Walmart or do you spend the $150 or more on quality eye wear? I've had the same set of Grunden's rain gear for 5yrs and it's still going strong. I've found there is only one thing worse then being cold on the water.....being wet and cold.

  42. My ipod goes from Bach to Slayer and everything between. But being a guitarist I tend to lean more towards guitar heavy music. Metallica, Megadeth, Children of Bodom, Slayer, Testament, Anthrax, Pantera, Iron Maiden, Zepplin, Hendrix, SRV, Django Reinhart, Chet Atkins, all sorts of stuff. But I love what they would call "shredders". Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci, Steve Vai, Satriani, Tony MacAlpine, the list goes on and on. But I must admit, there is something awesome about listening to great classical composers while on the lake as the sun is coming up and hooking into one of them chunky green fish. Lol

  47. I own a Lew's BB1, BB1 Pro, and 4 Tournament Mgs. I am slowly working towards replacing all my reels with the BB1 Pro because personally I don't like the magnetic brakes because they are only in effect towards the end of the cast not the beginning when the brake system is most important. Keep in mind that with the BB1 Pro it has an externally adjustable centrifugal brake system and is made to throw light baits. I can throw a 1/4oz bait on my BB1 Pro and a 7'0" Abu Garcia Veritas Medium heavy more than 65 yards (67.5 to be exact) while I have to really control my casts with the magnetic brakes due to an often backlash on the Tourney MG. Hope this helps

  48. My vote is to summer in Minnesota and winter in FL. I know there are great lakes down south but when I go to my lake pace, I am 25 minutes away from 30 different lakes that all hold 4-5 pound bass. But the best part is that there isn't any boat traffic on most of the lakes. The hardest decision I have to make is which lake to fish on a given day. I get grumpy if there's one boat on the ramp when I get there! I live on the Eastern edge of North Dakota. Look up the stas on our state. We have a massive budget surplus, we are the number 2 oil producing state, we have very low unemployment and the people here are some down to earth folks. No crazy liberal politics that may hurt the outdoorsman. Yep, I would say spend the summer in MN and the winter in FL if you can afford it.
