  1. I ordered this combo when they were both 25% off several weeks ago. It is really my first step into the high end gear arena after fish the last few years with more modest gear, like the Lews TP and Powell Endurance rods. I am a jig guy so I wanted my first shot at highly touted stuff to be in an all around jig rod. First impression- The Shimano Core 100 mg is light and it is smooth! It weighs about the same as a Team Lews Pro that I have. The core has a silkiness to the retrieve. It is a lot smoother is action than my several Lews TPs and has a slight edge on the Team Pro. (Not making this a reel competitionnbut I did want to reference to something). The DX is an absolutely stunning rod. I love the finish. The rod is noticeably lighter than the Powell's I own. I really like the tip of this rod just messing around in the shop. I spooled the reel with 14lb Sniper and paired the two. The combo is pretty darn light. They balance perfectly. The balance point was just above the reel seat. On to the fishing! I've been out on several short or half day trips with it and I was able to see what all the fuss was about. I went to an area I fish a lot with some deeper boat docks and I was able to fish this rod and my other jig rod a Powell 714/ Lews TP. On both rods I used both 3/8 and 1/2 jigs with typical rage craw trailers I was impressed with how well the core casts on the DX. I was able to roll cast and skip the lighter jigs under the docks with ease. Ok now to the fun part,....was it sensitive, it the 704 strong enough to fish 1/2oz jigs, ? Yes and yes! I only caught 5 fish on that rod but, it is flat out like having x ray vision. The rod feels good. I was able to get good hook sets and yank the fish out before they got me wrapped around poles. I fished about a few trees and got the same result. Rod has plenty of backbone and the reel was able to do its job too! Ok so would I buy another Core or DX. Maybe and Yes! I could tell a food difference with the rod over my Powell it is absolutely worth the extra hundred bucks. The Core is a phenomenal reel but o would have to catch it on sale again. I felt that differences in the Core and the Team Pro weren't that far apart to to justify the extra money. Team Pros can be had for 233 all day and most people can get a core for 370.. that's a 140 bucks for what I found to be a little difference. Now my team pros are still earning their dues, I know the Core will last me a lifetime if taken care of. That all said, if in see a pattern of the sales like that again I will absolutely capitalize. Hope this helps a few guys. And just remember, I'm not a pro, I'm not a rep, and not a fishing gear service guy, just a fisherman. Thanks guys. Edit- oh I forgot to mention, I love the handles on the Core far and away more than the handles and Eva crap on the Team Pro. And much more than the flat paddles of the TP. Its a lot more comfortable

  2. slow and easy pee You know that relaxing feeling you get when you got to go bad. You step up to the urinal, take a deep breath and let it out nice and slonezp. Nothing more relieving or relaxing in the world than that.

  4. Absolutely true. To be perfectly honest I never knew there was difference in finesse or power fishing until I become a member of bass sites, although I've been fishing for bass 60 years. IMO people equate finesse to spinning as that's the programming they've been led to believe, I don't think it's true at all. There are a number of people on this site alone that use nothing but spinning in all types of water conditions, wind, species and lure types, seen some pretty nice fish displayed here too. There is a spinning rod made for just about every thing, many have a wide range of lure weights too, standard size 2000 or 2500 reel has more than enough line capacity and drag. It's a personal choice, mine is always spinning and never b/c.

  8. For me the biggest advantage of a casting reel is accuracy. A proficient baitcaster will be much more efficient with lure placement than a proficient spinning reel guy. Also casting reels have much more power available as compared to the spinning reels commonly used for freshwater fishing. The advantages of a spinning reel is casting lighter lures easier, the drag on a spinning reel is fantastic which sets it up perfect for light line light wire hook applications(finesse). I love both for their strengths which is why I carry a good number of each. Mitch

  11. Spinning reels excel throwing light baits just due to the mechanics of a baitcaster, and for slack line presentations where a perfectly vertical fall is critical. For sheer casting distance, spinning can't be beat as long as it's set up correctly. You can get by bass fishing with all spinning or casting but being proficient with both opens up options and enhances the over all experience IMO.

  16. the ww2 is in referance to a few things..........my granfather on my dad's side was a navy vet of WW2, my grandmothers brother on my mom's side was an army combat vet of the ETO. I also collect any, and everything related to the the US armed forces during WW2........uniforms, field gear, weapons, etc......for many years I also traveled the eastern part of the country doing WW2 living history events for public education. The group I belonged to is one of the few in the US that is fully sanctioned and reconized by the Veterens association of the unit they represent..........the 5th Ranger Infantry Btn. I am no longer activly envolved, it's too time consuming with the travel, it's mega expensive, and I have kind of gotten a little long in both the tooth and waist line to accuratly look the part, but I pop in to a few of the local events they do from time to time and make a fool out of myself............and the farmer..........well that's what I do. I should change it to trucker though, as it seems I do more truck driving than farming now a days.

  18. It was a nice 66 degree day here in Ca. so I went fishing after work, I'm glad I did. I threw my Dobyns DX744C with a Shimano Chronarch CI4+ (30 lbs braid with 10 lbs leader) in the back of my truck and drove to the lake. I was using a Siebert Outdoors Dredge Football 3/8 oz jig (Whisky Craw) with a Watermelon Seed Baby Brush Hog trailer that had some Mega Strike on it. I didn't catch anything big but what I did catch the CI4+ handled with ease. The Dredge Jig has a great hook!!! When you hook a bass they stay hooked. Anyway, here's some pics. First Bass of the year!! 2.9 lbs. Small one 1.5 lbs. 2.46 lbs. another small one 1.45 lbs

  19. Boys I am here to tell you I am amped up!! We lost our ice this week and I can't wait to get out on the water. I have been down with a cold for the last few days and it is driving me crazy! I changed 300 round snaprings to ovals today. I ordered my LED light kits for my boat .My first big trip of the year will be for a week, back home on Table Rock the first week in April. I tied up 10 mop jigs that will be the first called up to bat. I sat for hours staring at a spot remover shakey head envisioning a 5 inch lizard thrown up around the docks. Every hook in my boat got the stickey test. I ordered a few things I needed for Jann's. Now I am trolling the fishing websites waiting on the BMC to start. It will be hours of staring at the war room too see who's gonna pull it off this year. Come on warm weather!!

  22. How is it so difficult for people here to understand the reel trade-in process? It does not matter what reel you trade in, how old it is, how much it cost when you bought it, whether its a spinning reel or a baitcaster, what color it is, etc. As long as the reel works, as in spins when you crank the handle. You get a discount. The amount of the discount is based on the price of the reel you a purchase. The more expensive the reel you purchase the more of a discount you receive. This is why people buy a 5$ reel , trade it in, and get a 15-20$ discount. Take some time, do a little critical thinking, read about it, I promise it is not difficult to understand. Good lord. Rant over

  27. I use braid on a 7'6" mh flippin stick. There are basically 3 steps. 1) Resist the temptation to swing at the sound or commotion of the hit. 2) Look and make sure the fish actually got the bait and not just smacked it and missed. 3) I you don't see the frog, see if line is moving and/ or reel up and if you feel anything, swing for the fence. This should all take place within a few seconds but if a fish gets my frog, the only time I seem to miss is if he inhales enough slop with it to cover the hooks and prevent penetration.

    1 point
  33. You might be setting the hook prematurely. Try to give it a 2-3 count before you set the hook so the fish can get in its mouth.

  34. if you have the proper equipment and hook-setting technique the strike to land ratio can be very good. the right equipment in my opinion is a 7'6"-8' MH/F-H/F casting rod (doesn't need to be very sensitive just strong) with a 7:1+ casting reel with metal frame and gear side plate. spooled with 50-80 lb braid. the proper technique for setting the hook is (IMO) once the strike occurred and the bait is out of sight lower your tip, reel very fast till you feel weight then do a hard over the shoulder set followed with a lot of reeling. optimally the fish will ski across the water over the top of the heavy vegetation all the way to the boat. Hope this helps you out... Mitch

  35. I showed everyone in my house and they all thought it was a real live trout. Impressive. Never fished a swim bait. I have a couple I'm going to use this year. If they work out for me I may invest the 30.00 on one of these. Heck I could see having pool parts tying up a weight on it instead of a hook and trying to fool people by tying it to like a 3lb test on the little dock demon pole my 4 yr old uses see if I could trick some people. So if it didn't catch fish I may be able to pull a prank or two haha

  36. I agree and amen. Couldn't have said it any better myself. Which is why I push my son (who is 4) to be better than my g/f's kids who are 8 and 12. I push them just as much but I think a competitive spirit and nature is something this country is greatly lacking. A sense of pride in what they do is another, and hard work? Forget about it. For instance they wanted a snowmobile so I went out and bought a couple of old ski doos that I grew up on and told them it's not all fun ,and they were going to learn to break trails. I told them how to do it and said good luck. They spent allllll day shoveling themselves out because they didn't listen. Then after 3-4 hours of watching them bust their butt I hopped on and broke the trails for them and they got to enjoy the last couple of hours. But boy did it make me proud to see these kids who when I moved in wouldn't leave the video games alone out there working for what they wanted. Not many kids would put in that kind of work like we did as a kid and I'm a firm believer the type of mentality we have and our used to starts young and sticks with you. You become complacent as you get older so if you're allowed to become complacent at 12 forget about it get your hand out for welfare now. (don't get me wrong some people need assistance but it shouldn't be a way of life). That being said I did get a trial sponsorship. they are sending me a jersey, hat, stickers/patches, tackle to try out, discount tackle to start and if I can sell x amount to local bait shops. tackle at cost and free tackle depending on amount plus a percentage. Also are going to pay for my first three tournaments this year and depending on how I place, and how I'm performing in sales we can restructer and they have a pretty good compensation plan the better I do. So it's a start for an awesome company, and will take some financial responsibility off my current local sponsors, and they are still allowing me to work with them and show off their logo etc as well. Thanks for those of you who were behind me on this one. I'll post a picture of me all decked out when it come in. Never owned an actual "fishing jersey" before. Can't wait to see how it feels. I think my voice cracked a few times on the phone after they told me the details. I was like a kid on christmas. The best part is they are leaving it up to me to perform. I love the pressure. So If I do great I don't have to worry about being stuck under a basic contract. The downside is I could get the boot pretty fast,. but I have faith. So for those of you looking for sponsorship put your name and face out there worst they can say is no but in my case I got lucky to have had a foot in the door.

  37. A cranky old woman was arrested for shoplifting at a grocery store. She gave everyone a hard time, from the store manager to the security guard to the arresting officer who took her away, complaining and criticizing throughout the process. When she appeared before the judge, the judge asked what she had stolen from the store. The lady defiantly replied, "Just a stupid can of peaches." The judge then asked why she had done it. She replied, "I was hungry and forgot to bring any cash to the store." The judge asked how many peaches were in the can. She replied, "Nine, but what do you care about that?" The judge patiently said, "Well, ma'am, because I'm going to give you nine days in jail -- one day for each peach." As the judge was about to drop gavel, the lady's long suffering husband raised his hand and asked if he might speak. The judge said, "Yes, what do you have to add?" The husband said, “Your Honor, she also stole a can of peas.”

  39. Back in the 80's out in the oil fields in the Bakersfield area all the companies used CB radios to communicate........everyone on the same channel. Some guy declared himself 'Wolfman'......and every morning, at the end of everyday and at different times of day would key his mike and release a long howl and then make some kind of statement. " aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooooo. The wolfman says, it's time to go home!" On a Friday afternoon. Or "Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooooooo. The wolfman says it's time to eat." At lunch time on a Tuesday. Always in secret and nobody seemed to know who it was. There was one particular foreman for Branch oilfield construction that absolutely hated this guy and his howling. His name was Whitey and he was in his 40s or so. He would jump on the radio and holler at wolfman that he was breaking radio protocol and if he ever caught him......he would make sure this wolfman never worked on that oil lease again! This went on for a year or so. Then very early one morning Whitey was at home and was awakened by the wolfman. Aaaaaaahhhhhhooooooo.......the wolfman says get your ass up! Whitey half alarmed and half homicidal.......ran outside to find his wolfman. It was his own son! Needless to say Whitey learned to chill out a little and have some fun at work! And it did not matter that everyone now knew who the wolfman was.........it was still as enjoyable as ever when the wolfman howled and announced his thoughts!

  41. Plastics, you aint got no plastics. You can count the number of bags you have. You don't count plastics, you weigh them. If your plastics don't cause your boat to list a few degrees to port or starboard you don't have enough. If you don't have 15-20 plastic shoe boxes of "extras" and "fill ins" in your man cave, you don't have enough plastics. If you don't have 3 bags of pb&j and 3 bags of sour grape Zoom 7" u-tail worms ( their the same color) you don't have enough plastics. If you don't have plum and plum/apple and plum/red and plum/blue, whatever , you don't have enough plastics. Come on man, get with it. The bait monkey is not doing his job. You need at least 30-40 more lbs. of plastics to catch up with us. Nice looking tackle though.

  46. If the bass is a largemouth they tend to engulf the jig fully into their mouth and crunch it between the tongue and top of the mouth. Look into a basses mouth and in the back on the top of the mouth are a set of crunchers used to kill prey. Largemouth use their lips to prevent prey from escaping, not usually to bite with. The tap you feel is the jig hitting the back of the bass mouth, the second tap is often the jig being spit out.You can't set too fast on largemouth bass. Smallmouth and spots often grab a crawdad by it's claws and shake it, before taking it info the mouth, so a hesitation works OK. More than likely the bass swam directly at you and simply spit the jig without being hook well. Better hook set will help. Tom
