  1. Thanks pal. And yes, there are plenty of things I don't agree with about CA, but there's also plenty to like here as well. I'm a fan of Mizzou, one of my friends played there that now plays for the 49ers. I went back to his home town a few years back and have to tell you, if I could convince the wife to move there I probably would. As far as beautiful country women, I wouldn't know. I'm happily married to a GREAT woman. Why the hell she married my ugly mug is beyond me. I'm the same guy I've always been. Lately I feel there's a lot more camaraderie on this site, which is great. Oh, and Raider Nation, camaraderie means 'friendship amongst people that spend time together'.

  4. The fishing rods I own are strewn throughout my house, but the shipping tubes are all stashed in my garage. Yesterday while walking past my rod tube jungle, I thought about this BR post and snapped a picture. You'd be hard pressed to name one rod brand that I don't own ('13 ***' being the latest addition). On the upside, at least you know the tackle opinions I voice are not flavored by brand loyality Roger

  8. I would suggest getting some 3700 boxes and start keeping your tackle somewhat organized in those. Get a bag that holds a few 3700 boxes and you can pick and choose what boxes you want to take and swap them in and out of your tackle bag.

  9. The sole purpose of a weed guard is to prevent the jig hook point from snagging, it also prevents snagging the basses mouth tissue. The best weed guard is no weed guard whenever you can get by without it. I use a Hiychhiker spring to attach a short length of finesse worm to protect the hook point, no weed guard. Tom

  14. I've wanted a bass boat since I was a kid. Have owned several boats but never glass and never big horsepower. Have almost bought several times but always backed away. I finally pulled the trigger. I don't get excited about much but I'm pretty fired up about this. I know the boat won't catch me any more fish but I've always wanted something like this. It's a '98 Stratos 201 with a 225 Johnson and I cannot wait to get her out on the water.

  19. I have a bunch of blemished ones if you want them they are yours free. This would include some Arkies (which are brown), finesse Snooties and bunch of others in black , brown and green and all different sizes in ounces. They are not perfect as some of them have flaws, maybe a paint chip, but they are fishable and will catch fish. They do not have skirts on them either. So if that works for you then they are yours. PM me your full name and address, and I 'll send them out to you on Tuesday. Have fun and catch some fish.

  20. I'm not going to dig deep in the preference thing, versus materials and construction and engineering but, the way you often state you're looking for the metal drag star- why? What difference does that make? There are so many upper end reels that use material other than aluminum for the star, I'm curious as to why you think it makes any difference? I know why it couldn't be any less a concern to me, but your insistence baffles me.

  28. Unless you're incredibly dialed into your equipment, I do not think you'll notice much of a difference between the two. I'd be much more concerned about the rod company and action than those two inches. Have you narrowed down your choices to any specific rods?

  31. Don't let the smallish hooks keep you from fishing them. Many times, bass will just smash into a bait to stun it before they eat it which may be why you did not hook up. Trust me, even with huge hooks, you won't get every fish that takes a swipe at your bait. Those floating Rapalas have caught more fish than any other single lure in history. Give them another try with the original hooks. Just make sure they are sharp. I catch a lot of bass on lures with #8 hooks. If a fish gets a bait with sharp hooks inside his mouth, the hook size should not be much of an issue.

  43. Honestly I probably fish some of the same tournament waters as you do, I do punch with 3/4- 1 1/2 oz weights every now and then, and it is very successful at times, My set up is a Abu Vendetta 7'6" H/F paired with a Lews superduty. this setup is not super sensitive, but it is well balanced, and has plenty of power. Sensitivity is not too much of an issue with punching as you have a very large weight at the end which will make a bite very easily detectable without a super sensitive rod. Personally I wouldn't spend a ton on a punch rod, I would save some of that money and upgrade the jig and t-rig rods down the line. The *** 7'3 H/F would work pretty well for MN punching... Mitch

  44. What was the fill on the down jacket? Not all down is created equal. Youre looking to need a 600 or 800 fill for winter. I can suit you up to be warm, but youre going to pay dearly. Ill give you a piece of advice, its all about layers. Do you want to buy something from people who think they know the outdoors or people who live it? The hiking companies have great clothing thats not camo. Id go with... 1st layer: Merino Wool - it wont get stinky and provides warmth if you do sweat and get it wet 2nd layer: Fleece or wool 3rd layer: Down 4th layer: Shell wind/waterproof On the feet: Merino socks in a boot rated minimum for -40, go up a half size, tight boots make cold feet On the hands: Light glove like a sitka liner glove and handwarmers in your pockets. Take the gloves off dealing with baits or cut the index/thumb off. On the head: Fur lined hat or Merino

  47. All good rods for the money. Take a spooled up reel and a jig to the store and try them out. Sounds weird but its the only way. Other than that they are all decent rods. I would honestly go the route of the Shimano, solid rod from a dependable company.

  48. Not so much one technique, but one or two specific covers: thick vegetation or heavy brush and boat docks!! Punching, flipping, pitching, froggin, ripping swimbaits nd swim jigs through hydrilla is just my thing. I also love skipping docks with jogs, plastics, flukes and square bills. That's my niche, that's what I enjoy most, but still fish alotnof other techniques and diffeent structure like everyone else. Hank parker once said that if u find grass, you will find bass... I just toook it and ran with it. Its paid off

  49. The size, strength & type of leader material chosen is usually predicated as much by the cover (or lack there of) as the size/strength of your main line, in this case braid. Routinely, the leader size (diameter) of the leader should be close to the size of the mainline. 20lb braid with a 20lb mono or fluorocarbon leader would not fish well. Although the rated breaking strength is similar, the size difference between the two is too dramatic. Despite being boxed with a rated size and test, each company's standard is a little different. So depending on your favorite brand of both main line & leader, you'll be better served to play around with each until you find what works best for you in any given situation. Generally speaking, when I am using a braid main line and leader it looks something like this ~ Braid main line Leader size 10 - 20 6 - 12 30 - 40 14 - 20 50 - 65 15 - 25 Though there are many good ones, I use a Uni-knot to Uni-knot for the main line to leader connection. This is what works for me - your results may vary ~ Good Luck A-Jay

  50. Paddle size can be easily determined by standing with your feet flat on the ground and raising your hand directly above your head. Take the paddle and try to cup the end of your fingers around the end of the blade as it stands next to you. If you can just barely cup your fingers over the edge, then that length will work for you. Anything 10cm longer or shorter may not be as efficient for you on the water. When selecting a paddle, your physical stature is not the only variable to consider. You need to take the proper length paddle and then sit in the kayak itself. If you have a kayak that rides higher out of the water than others or has a higher gunwale (as in the case of the Ascend D10T), then you may have to increase your paddle length by 10cm (ie: a 230cm over a 220cm). Remember, the Ascend D10T is a SINK (Sit INside Kayak) versus the Malibu Mini-X which is a SOT (Sit On Top) - two entriely different kayaks from a seated position perspective. Another variable in your kayak decision process is seat time - I have yet to see any response from you stating how much seat time you have had in either kayak. They both are suitable as first kayaks, but if either or both are uncomfortable after 15 minutes on the water, what will you do then? Get some seat time in both and make sure you are wearing the exact PFD you plan on wearing while you are trying them out. That is the only way you will be albe to test out how comfortable you are. Hope this helps.
