  3. Almost two years since the passing of our two dogs, we started to look at rescue groups to adopt a puppy! We found HART, homeless animal rescue team. A little of mix breed puppies was rescued from a high kill shelter and were put on their website for adoption. We filled out an application and planned to attend the next adoption event. Their events are very well run with an all volunteer staff and an unbelievable number of people that foster dogs and cats until perminant homes can be found. To adopt a pet from HART, you must complete the adoption form, go thru 2 interviews, have a vet check ( to make sure all of you previous and current pets were/are well cared for and current on vaccinations ) as well as a home visit!! This is Maple, she is supposedly a lab/border collie mix. At about 12 weeks old, she weighs almost 25lbs! She is such a good little puppy, already crate trained and on her way to being completely potty trained!

  6. You might want to fish locally for a few years and see if you're any good at it. Everyone thinks they are halfway decent at fishing until they fish their first tournaments.

  7. I'm just going to throw this out there. Most ads for fishing gear are designed to catch fishermen. My good old Wal Mart $19.00 fishing rod catches big bass just fine and those Walmart spinners work great as well. Just saying.

  8. I'm looking forward to it. I even purchased an extra memory card to hold all of A-Jay's trophy catch pictures.

  9. Also, to make it more interesting.............there is no "standard" amongst the rod companies. What some call a medium power , others might call a MH, and some call a fast what others would call an XF. About the only "rule of thumb" is there is none.

  13. You need to pay careful attention to how much slack is in your line. When you're standing up on the bank you probably back up when you hook a fish, even if you don't realize you do it. In a kayak the opposite happens, you are pulled toward the fish. Make sure your line is tight enough when you set the hook and then reel to keep pressure on the fish after you set the hook. With open hook finesse techniques, I would reel until the line is tight before sweeping the rod. Your hook size is fine.

  14. That rod, technically, is built around fishing swim jigs. It's not ideal for spinnerbaits and the like, it's just too fast. It's a great jig rod up to 1/2 ounce. I prefer my plastics rods a little slower than that specific rod, but it will work for that, as well.

  17. I'm sorry to the other guys but a 40 size reel isn't "HUGE" - it is a size bigger than most bass guys use but it isn't like you're using some giant offshore tuna reel or something.

  18. You guys are right about the big heavy stick for pitching, I use a 7'9" Extra heavy white ice for punching mats and flipping but with this topic he was wanting advice for a four rig set up for a co-angler. He can get away with a heavy 7'0" for frogs and flipping and it will work better than a big stick for co-angler. Best advice is to know where they are fishing and then plan according the info he has, he might have some trouble punching but everything else he could make do with.

  21. Gun owners do not carry assault rifles around. Gun owner do carry pistols and hunting guns/rifles around. You usually keep assault rifles at your home or business and only take them to the range for practice. You usually carry pistols on your body and in your vehicles plus hunting weapons. So I would say assault weapons are by far safer than pistols and hunting weapons. But the kooks hate any type of firearm unless their behinds are in a bind. Then we find out that either they or their body guards are carrying or have guns in their homes and vehicles. Go figure.

  26. As a general rule, I would go with 1. 7ft-F spinning for finesse 2. 7ft MHM for all Treble hook baits 3. 7ft Mhxf - chatterbaits/spinnerbaits/soft swimbaits/t-rigs 4. 7ft HF w/braid for frogs, jigs, pads etc. Obviously it will be different based on what rods you own but this is the simplest way. All 4 rods are 7ft and it's an easy system to go by. The rods I own are abit longer so mine would be between 7 and 7'4

  28. Some crank baits are better late winter/very early spring baits than others. You've just got to experiment to find out what works for you. My experience has been that I can occasionally git bit on wiggle warts and shad raps. I have to throw the shad raps on very light line - currently I'm using 10 lb nanofil. Wiggle warts for me are pretty much the same thing, I'll use 10 or 12 lb test, more often 10. Any decent mono will work. The good thing about wiggle warts is that I can throw them on bait casting gear with decent results. Having said that, I think that jerk baits (specifically Lucky Craft Pointers) and jigs or shaky head worms are a better late winter/early spring option day in and day out. Another early spring crank related to consider is that every spring, I will catch 1 or 2 big fish (5 to 8 lbs is big for me) throwing a rattle bait in 1 to 3 feet of water, late March or early April. It seems to me, in the conservation lakes that I mostly fish that the big fish come up very shallow, very early and then go back down and then the regular pre-spawn - spawn - post spawn progression happens. Throwing the rattle bait early in the year has never been a numbers game for me, but it has resulted in a big fish or two for me nearly every year for the past several years.

  33. I'm with A-Jay. As long as my hands are moving I'm happy but topwater is the most exciting for me. Nothing like getting startled when a fish blows up on your buzzbait or frog.

  34. I am in the same camp as A-Jay. Any thing that moves fast. Swimjigs, spinnerbaits, lipless cranks, buzzbaits, and stanley ribbits are all my favorites. Senko fishing is about as fun as watching paint dry unless I am working it like a fluke or jerkbait.

  35. Chunking & Winding ~ really doesn't matter what it is. Could be a Spinner bait, a Crank bait, Swim bait,or Top water just as long as I'm heaving it out there and grinding it back. A-Jay

  36. Sure did! My wife wasn't real big on the name Lake at first but it's really grown on her, probably because of how many people hear it and say they really like the name I liked it because I obviously like fishing and being on the water, and my wife and I love camping and being on the water so why not name our son after something that we already loved? Plus, how do you say no to that face? It could have been a lot worse for him for sure. My wife's boy name was "Aspen" Something tells me "Boy Named Sue" would have been one of his favorite songs if he'd got stuck with that name

  39. Go to "Links" at the top of the Forum pages and then go to Bass Clubs. Scroll down to Virginia and look at the two last entries. Pull up their web pages and check the names of the clubs in your area. Contact the club's or the Region executives about joining one of the clubs. In your area the clubs fish a lot of waters including the Potomac, Lake Anna, Rapp, Pamunkey, Mattaponi, Historic James, Chick and sometimes they travel to Buggs and Gaston.

  45. I am 52 and bought my first fishing kayak two years ago (ride 115) I can't think of one negative thing about fishing out of it.I take it out 2-3 times a week and prefer it over my pond prowler which i haven't used since i bought my kayak. I have never had a problem landing a fish or being dragged around a lake by a big bass. I am not an expert on kayaks since this is my first one but i venture to say most fishing kayaks are stable as heck (go to you tube and watch guys catching huge fish out of them in the ocean) I sit side saddle in mine all the time while fishing with my legs dangling in the water without fear of tipping over.If people can stand up and fish out of these thing you don't have to worry about being flipped out of it while sitting and fishing. Kayak fishing is a blast, even for us older guys.
