  2. Man I was slaying the trout today! As a side note, the trout pond at the Sportshow was free today Went to see Chapman and Scanlon do their Q&A seminar and it was right by the pond, had to get in on some of that since it was free. Can't lie, felt pretty good to catch some fish, even if they were penned up trout. The best part of the whole show happened right before I left the trout pond. An older lady came into the trout pond area right next to me with her adult special needs son who was in a wheelchair. She was trying to hook a fish so he could pull it in and was having no luck so next one I hooked I handed the rod over to him and left the trout pond. Both their smiles and his obvious excitement made the trip up there worthwhile

  8. The wife, or the bass....lol. She is a whiz with photoshop. I had her to send this to Walgreens to be put on a coffee mug. When I went to pick up the mug, the photo was on one side. On the other side she had put, in big capital letters, "BIG BOGUS BASS". When I asked her why, she says, "you didn't want to lie did you". I said, YEAH!!! Oh well, still a nice mug. I try not to let anyone see the other side. Hootie

  9. Does anyone recall OuachitaBassAngler, he was a learned fellow from Arkansas who worked for the Game & Fish Comm. He was a catch-&-release fisherman, but advocated keeping a stash of legal bass in the freezer at all times. My wife & I are C&R anglers too, but also enjoy eating bass, so you'll always find bass around 2 lbs in our freezer. About a month ago while retrieving my boat at the ramp, an angler strolled over and asked: "Well, did ya hammer'em today?". I replied, 'No, but we got a couple bass'. On the word 'bass' his face seemed to drop, so I surmised he was a crappie fisherman. Sure enough, he came back out of the blue with: "Crappies are the best eating fish in the world". As it happens, my wife has given me several taste tests at home comparing crappie to Florida bass. I tested each sample with my eyes closed, and in every case I'd always point to bass as the most flavorful fish. But rather than share any of that with this fellow, I just nodded yes, while tightening my tie-down straps Roger

  11. Like Mark said, just come to WI and throw anything. Seriously, they will hit it. I don't think theres a lure in my rotation that hasn't caught pike at some point. If specifically going for them I'd pick a spinnerbait, not inline, in white, chartreuse, maybe a hint of red. Another to give a shot is a lipless crank like Felix mentioned. Wide wobble with a quick retrieve, preferably in a perch or firetiger pattern around my parts does well.

  13. My first thought when I saw that was the person that did the layout of that page probably put the photo of the 11-13 right next to the "11-4" on purpose..... Now, if you saw the photos (no weights listed) of the 11-13 and the 17-0 side by side - which would you call the bigger fish? Hard to tell. Photos capture memories,.........................accurate scales capture the weight...

  17. We have just recently started doing some custom anodizing of cosmetic reel parts to match the accents on our handles. We are rolling this out as an additional service to our customers. You can send us your star drag/cast control knob and we will strip/anodize it to match the color of your handle accents. We have done this for several customers and the response has been extremely positive. For now we are doing this customization as a value-added service for people who buy our handles. But soon, you will be able to buy custom colored accent parts directly from our website. We are in the process of building inventory now and hope to have these parts available for sale by mid February. These are brand new, factory parts which we strip/anodize to match one of our seven standard colors (silver, light gold, dark gold, blue, green, red, orange). Have a color that you don't see here? We may be able to help you out with that too.

  18. If it had only been the smallmouth I thought it was when it first bit and for the first couple moments of the fight! From way back on the 4th of July, I'd been catching some really nice smallies and was thinking I had a shot at a really nice one when I hooked him. Wife was deleting videos off her phone and found it and uploaded it for me. Sorry it's sideways and don't mind my antics at the end, our dog always goes with me and we have pretty good dialog back and forth sometimes

  19. After 50 yrs of rebuilding my own reeIs, I finally decided to send about 10 of my fav's to a REEL PRO and Mike at Delaware Valley Tackle did a terrific job I only use the old Curados as they hold up to my style of ABUSE with winching on 65lb braid and 25lb fluoro minimums. It was amazing how much better these were when I got them back and another THANKS to Mike... REEL PRO

  21. As both a reel tech and former lube oil distributor, brand is totally personal preference. The keys are to use quality products in an appropriate application on CLEAN parts. Drags require special drag grease (if it's not a dry system), which can serve as a gear grease as well otherwise a water resistant marine grease works well. A med weight multi purpose oil on sliding parts(clutch etc) and a light weight oil for bearings (REM oil, Mfg Oil, even sewing machine oil). A bearing packer for a few DIY reels is overkill, I'd use a heavy oil for frame bearings. 80-140 gear lube works well and is a good middle ground on worm gears. You can lightly swab the AR in baitcasters with a light oil. spinning reel AR's, specifically shimanos should be left dry.

  22. You could just come to Wisconsin or MN and you'll catch enough in one day to never really want to again. Don't get me wrong, catching fish is fun but when you're specifically targeting bass and you keep getting hammered by 18-24" pike it drives you bananas after a while. Catching big pike is a lot of fun, finding the big girls is a bit trickier. That is unless you're in the upper Saskatchewan fishing pristine lakes that see 2 or 3 fisherman a year. Up there you can catch multiple 40's in a day! A trip I'd like to take some day. Honestly anything you throw for bass is going to catch Pike. Spinnerbaits, Crankbaits, buzzbaits, spooks....you name it, the water wolves will devour it. Hollow belly swimbaits get annihilated by pike too.

  24. Don't leave the dock without a couple of spoons. Slightly over-sized for bass will do nicely. The classis red & white as well as the "5 of diamonds" patterns have accounted for many a pike. These are definitely in the Oldie but Goodie class. Some type of leader and a "Jaw Spreader" will make the whole experience much more pleasant. Good Luck A-Jay

  31. Stopped by at Schaumburg show. Not bad. Talked to plenty of reps about there products. Found some jerkbaits and medium sized cranks. Price shop first although most didn't carry to much of a selection with certain brands or choice of colors. Will be going back since im not finished. Have some kind of problem and that's not having enough lures. See ya'll there Oh yeah.....The Man - KVD

  34. You have dead hands then, or have no idea what your doing. I have the same rod, and if you can't feel a crank wobble, or tick grass, or defelct off cover with this rod, your not going to feel it with anything. I can feel a fish swim up behind a bait with this rod and "push" water at my bait....I am not saying it's the greatest rod in the world, but it's certainly plenty sensitive for cranking.

  37. Smokinal, the secrets to taking a good photo of you with your bass includes: 1. Nothing in the background to take away from the photo. 2. If the water is shown have the background bank about shoulder high. 3. Hold the bass out in front of you to make it look larger. 4. Lie about its weight. Simple way to take the photo. P.S. Make sure your fly is up if it is a full body photo.

  39. That would depend on the definition of a spider jig. The original spider jig was a Bobby Garland spider shirt and twin or single tail grub. Gary Yamamoto offered the spider skirt attached to the grub and called it a Hula grub. Others now make Hula grubs like Chompers etc. a spider jig is simply a hula grub on either a stand up or football plain jig, simple and very effective when cast and retrieved like a Texas rigged worm. Jig and craw or jig and pig is usually a jig head with a weed guard, Arkie, football, etc., with a skirt attached to the jig head and a trailer added. The advantage is you have a wider choice of skirt materials, color, trailer combinations and the weed guard to fish in heavier cover. Spider jigs are excellent choice in more open water with rocky structure and light cover. Jig and craw are excellent in heavier cover, weeds, wood, etc. Tom

  46. My "finesse" bait cast combo. Use this for light worm fish, jerkbaits, senkos, etc. This one has the custom anodized star drag and cast control knobs from a Curado 200E7. Blue anodizing matches the accents on the Dobyns Champion rod (704C) very well.

  47. My jig set up. Not a huge Quantum Fan but their flipping switch is (ergonomically) the best in the business, IMO. This setup is very light but very powerful. Orange accents on the handle and reel match the accents on the Dobyns Extreme rod (745DX).
