  1. As a guy who has always considered a phone as simply a way to talk to others I have been slow to embrace the marvels of the new technology. I only added texting because my daughter would answer a text when she would not a call. A sturdy flip phone (Rugby II) seemed to meet all my needs. Just about everyone I know has a smartphone, and the ease of taking and transferring pictures, and accessing maps and the interweb finally caused me to look into a new phone. What I found was by buying inexpensive smartphones for me and my wife, and sharing data we could get many more features for about the same money. After a few days of playing with my new phone I now understand that talking directly to others is only one of countless uses for a modern phone. While many of those uses will never be touched on my phone, including text conversations with someone in speaking distance, while driving, fishing, or talking face to face with a live human, going back to a simple phone is unlikely. So here I am, an old guy being drug into the 21st Century whether I like it or not. Now I have to go chase the neighbor kids out of my yard...

  6. Two old fishing buddies, Long Mike and Fishing Rhino, were out fishing in some rough waters when Long Mike suddenly lost his dentures over the side of the boat. After seeing the devastated expression on his friend’s face, Fishing Rhino decided to play a prank on his old friend to cheer him up. He removed his own set of false teeth and hooked them on his line and pretended to catch and reel in the missing dentures. After unhooking the false teeth and giving them to his friend, Long Mike took the dentures and thanked and hugged his old buddy. He slipped the dentures in his mouth and immediately removes them and says disgustedly: “They’re not mine, they don’t fit!” and throws them back into the water.

  9. Not the same quality as those Lake Erie bass, But last summer I went on a smallie quest to the U.P. of Michigan and in 2 days landed 17 smallies on a small lake between 3 and 4 1/2 lbs. dragging a crawfish tube. Not another boat on the water, eagles and ospreys everywhere. This is a C&R lake but no one fishes it. Also caught 20 LM between 1.5 and 2.5 lbs. on another lake on the same trip. U.P.= Gods country

  10. Another thing to consider is the prototypes may or may not have the cosmetics that the final product will have. The fact that they are already replacing the G series suggests that they realize they disappointed a lot of people. I expect the new Curado to be a very good reel, they can't afford to blow this one.

  14. Apparently the Vietnamese man that owns a Chinese restraint in town still remembers me 7 years later. According to my pregnant wife they have the all time best egg lolls and chicken flied lice in town. Well I was banished from there 7 years ago for accidentally mocking him. A large argument ensued, and I may have kept using my remarkable accurate Chino American accent through out. He also may have run me out of the restraunt with a ladle. Well the SOB still remembers me. I stepped a foot inside the doorway and was ran out again. This fool is like the Chinese version of the Soup Nazi. Personally I hate their food and think it is disgusting. So im its really no loss to me not being able to patronize his crummy establishment. However my wife loves their food and wants take out from there. So I get to send my dad or mom in to pick her orders up for her.

  15. Shimano- Built in proprietary factories and production lines wholly owned by Shimano one facility in Malaysia and one in Japan Pinnacle- Owned by Silstar, built by Dawon, Doyo, Kaito, or one of a couple other Chinese Manufacturers Abu Garcia- Pure Fishing can be built by Dawon, Doyo, or Kaito on the upper end reels. Lower and mid range reels are generally of "farmed" Chinese origin; IE: They can be built at any one of the Chinese factories in lots, there is no guarantee which factory they are coming from, generally. Lews- Generally built by Doyo and Dawon, with lower end reels being made at either Korean, Sri Lankan, or Chinese facilities. Pflueger Pure Fishing can be built by Dawon, Doyo, or Kaito on the upper end reels. Lower and mid range reels are generally of "farmed" Chinese origin; IE: They can be built at any one of the Chinese factories in lots, there is no guarantee which factory they are coming from, generally. BPS- BPS Reels are built much the same as Pure Fishing, and Lews- The caveat being that they are the owners of the tooling. In other cases, the bid goes to the mfr to include tooling. Cabela's- Can be made in any number of facilities, from Daiwa's own to Dawon and Doyo. As well, they can be of Chinese origin. Quantum- Mostly made in Chinese facility that shares manufacture of Zebco reels as well. Some are made in a Korean facility, it is unclear of whose facility it actually is. Some say that it is wholly owned by quantum, while Zebco/Quantum deny that is the case. Diawa Have facilities for OEM mfr in both Japan and Korea. A small Malay facility as well. Penn- See Pure Fishing- Some Penn Reels are still made in the USA, some are made in China and Korea Zebco- see Quantum Rods- generally are made in any number of facilities in China or Korea. With few exceptions on the higher end rods. How do you know the parts aren't the same? 99.8% of the Chinese reels will be similar, however, the parts will be stamped rather than machined, lower quality metals are used, and lower quality components. Quantum is notorious for this, as is Pure Fishing.

  16. If you have smart phone you can get an app called Line. Most of the people I met in Japan use this app. Free message any where in the world. That's how I keep in touch with the people I met while there.

  17. Or just buy the rods you want....lol unless i am getting a free rod out of the deal like last year's promo a free hat or t-shirt isn't usually a factor in my buying purchase. Not to mention it is usually a pain having to fill out a form, write a check, who does that anymore, and then mail it off.

  27. We took son, daughter-in-law and grandkids out to breakfast today and my son showed his new app on his iPhone. It controls the temperature in his house. Being a computer geek he loves the new app. As for me, I can just as easily change the temperatures up and down stairs before leaving the house. I am proud of myself for being able to download the "free" apps on my iPad and iPhone. Am I in the 21st Century or what?

  28. It depends on your favorite drop shot fishing technique. If you want to use the 2-pound to 5-pound test like the Japanese do then you need a reel that can handle line test that light. If you want to use regular 6, 8 or 10 pound fluorocarbon line then any spinning reel that handles those line tests will do. You can always go up or down a line test based on what your reel can handle. The larger the reel the more line can be placed on the spool. If you pitch and flip you may not want that much line so a 2000 or 2500 size spinning reel will suffice. Just remember that you need to check your line for knicks, scrapes, cuts, abrasions and cut out the damaged line so you may want to take along a second spinning reel ready to replace the first one if you have to cut off damaged line or retie a lot. Also, you will have to balance the reel's line test specs with those of your rod. And last, you may want to use the drop shot rod for other techniques so be sure the rod and spinning reel can handle whatever you want to throw after you finish fishing the drop shot. Any brand name spinning reel of your choice, including Cabela's and BPS will be acceptable. You don't have to invest a fortune in a drop shot spinning reel to be successful.

  31. Pick a pricing point and there are at least two or three that stand out. Then we look to "personal preference" especially regarding brand. I generally prefer Shimano, but have been VERY impressed by the new Tournament Series Pinnacle reels.

  33. Brother in law Chris, and I hit one of the power plant lakes for our first trip of the year. We were the first boat there but we had to wait 45 minutes to launch so we fished from the bank while we waited. I managed to catch 1 largemouth and 3 large crappie, one of which that thought it was a bass. Once we got on the water and went to the outlet we caught smallmouth largemouth, and Chris caught this ugly thing Before we left we hit the spot I'd caught the crappie from the bank earlier and I put 5 crappie from 13 to 14 inches in the livewell. Good start to the year for sure.

  37. My choice would be tab of yellow (not yellow chartreuse), tab of black, 6 strands of orange and 5 strands of watermelon. This would make up a 55 strand skirt. I get most of all of my skirts from fishingskirts.com If you think there is too much black in there take some out and add more yellow to balance it off.

  39. MH should be fine unless you are putting it into really thick stuff. I think the Abu rods run a little stiff too, so a heavy might be overkill for that lure weight. If you're open to other rods, I would recommend trying a ***. They normally go for 100, some gander mtns have them 20% off right now. 7'1" MH would be perfect IMO.

  41. Any time is a good time to throw a swimbait, you just have to know what they are eating. Under 50 degree water, 8 inch trout bait. Upper 50 - lower 60 degree water, bluegill bait Upper 70 - low 80 degree water, topwater rat bait

  44. Probably not, but we will have several couples that you might feel more comfortable staying with. If you have already visited the website you saw that the accomodations are cottages, seperate bedrooms and lots of space. The Roadtrip isn't like a fishing or hunting camp with a bunch of rednecks. It's much closer to a family reunion. I believe we had four women (wives) there last year. If you want some reference from a female perspective, send a PM to Keri.

  46. Hey All! I'm Tiffany. I've been into fishing for about 4 years or so. If I'm fishing, I'm typically looking for largemouth. I started out dock fishing right off my families dock in Sodus Bay, NY. There's nothing like fishing off a dock right after a steak dinner, air gets cool, and I'm fishing the pads. It's peaceful, beautiful, and if I'm lucky, a pig will hit, and I'm casting for the next. Do you not appreciate life more with fishing in your life as I do? Therapists are overrated.
