  9. The Berkley Havoc Subwoofer is my new goto topwater bait. Cheap and durable. Bought a bunch in a silver color for less than 2 dollars a pack today. I have caught Bass and Snakes on them. I even let them fall and swim them slowly. I know most love them as swim jig trailers.

  11. Well, I suppose I should post considering I think of myself as a Quantum aficionado. I currently own a whole dang bunch of them. Some old like the 3:8.1 cranking reel and what not to my new found loves the Smoke series. A reel is only as good as the person behind it. Proper maintenance and it will last for ever. Heck I've got some of the 20 dollar Quantums from when I was a kid that I still would take out and fish with. I may be in the minority here, but, I've never had a problem with any of mine...............

  20. Facts Require Confirmation....Beliefs Thrive Without Confirmation Barometric pressure is not without merit but its relationship to fish behavior is widely misconceived. The association between atmospheric pressure and fish disposition is coincidental, it is not causal. Additionally, barometric pressure is a lagging indicator, like driving your car while looking in the rear-view mirror. Water Pressure versus Air Pressure Air is a highly 'compressible' medium, whereas water is virtually 'incompressible'. Changes in barometric pressure are barely perceptible to fish. As an example of Air versus Water, imagine pressing an air-filled balloon against a rock and expecting a reaction from the rock. To further display the power of water pressure, allow me relate a graphic but real-world example. In saltwater, we often fished for ling (red hake) and whiting (silver hake) at the Ambrose Lightship where water depths exceed 100 feet. Fish that were hauled topside were subjected to a lethal plunge in water pressure. Due to a dramatic reduction in water pressure their eyes were bulging out of their sockets and their gullet was in their mouth and turned inside-out. Needless to say, catch-and-release was not an option. A Little Science Goes A Long Way All matter has weight, even gaseous matter such as the earth's atmosphere. Air is extremely light but the earth's atmosphere is several hundred miles high, so at sea level our atmosphere exerts 14.7 pounds of pressure per square inch. Barometric pressure (atmospheric pressure) is usually quantified by the height that a column of mercury rises in a standardized tube. At sea level, normal barometric pressure will force mercury 29.92 inches up the tube, which is expressed as 29.92 inHg or 'one atmosphere'. Okay, now we have a Barometric Baseline, so let's add some meteorological events. During an average cold-front (high-pressure clockwise cell) the barometric pressure will climb to around 30.32 InHg, a mean rise of 1-1/3% on balance. During an average warm-front (low-pressure counterclockwise cell) the barometric pressure usually falls to around 29.52 inHg, a drop averaging 1-1/3% below normal. In contrast to air, water has a far greater specific gravity. At a depth of 34 feet, water exerts the same pressure per square inch (lb PSI) as several hundred miles of atmosphere. So at 34 ft deep, the sum of air pressure and water pressure is 29.4 lb PSI or 'two atmospheres'. Due to water's high specific weight, when a fish swims just 5.4 inches downward in the water column, the rise in pressure is identical to an average high-pressure system (cold front). Inversely, when the same fish swims 5.4 inches higher in the water column, the drop in pressure is equivalent to an average low-pressure cell (warm front). For anyone interested in calculating their own formulas & results, I've included two useful constants: => 1-foot column of water = 0.433 lb / sq. in. => 1-foot cube of water = 62.35 lb COINCIDENTAL FACTORS In and of itself, barometric pressure exerts no influence on fish behavior, however it frequently accompanies meteorological conditions that do. In any case, there's no advantage to monitoring a proxy like atmospheric pressure, when the direct causes are more obvious and more timely. Atmospheric pressure is not only a symptomatic indicator but often a laggard indicator. Listed below are easily recognized weather conditions that directly affect the behavior and disposition of fish, regardless of barometric pressure: APPROACHING COLD FRONT > Falling Barometer Until the cold front is actually upon you, the barometer will likely continue to creep lower > Building Cloud Cover Reduced light level is positive for fishing, with or without a falling barometer > Increasing Winds Wind creates surface refraction that reduces luminosity and also aggregates plankton which are both positive conditions, with or without a falling barometer > Steady Air Temperatures Stable weather over the long-term is very positive to fishing. but over the short-term, steady air temperatures have no appreciable effect PASSING COLD FRONT > Rising Barometer By this time, increased winds & falling air temperatures have spilled the beans > Clearing Cloud Cover Increased light levels are negative for fishing, with or without a rising barometer > Gusty Winds Early on, gusty winds are not negative, but persistent cold northwest air mixed into the epilimnion eventually becomes negative. Barometric pressure offers no input as to the pivot point in timing. > Falling Air Temperatures Falling air temperatures is one of the most negative events in bass fishing, especially for Florida-strain bass. Once again, barometric pressure offers no useful input ============================================================================================================== APPROACHING WARM FRONT The four conditions noted above under 'Approaching Cold Front' also apply to an 'Approaching Warm Front'. In other words, the barometer cannot differentiate between an approaching warm front and an approaching cold front (ouch). On the other hand, 'wind direction' quickly and accurately distinguishes an approaching warm-front from an approaching cold-front. Roger

  23. "My Brand is better than Your Brand" threads are perhaps my least favorite topics on the entire BR fishing forum. Rarely if ever, to these threads add anything constructive to what is otherwise such an excellent site. I can't even call them entertaining as they routinely cause disharmony. Question regarding certain brands / models are routinely answered with adequate information provided by members who have experience using the equipment. Posts offering the opportunity to debate brand quality, performance and dependability, illicit responses that appear defensive, misrepresented and hard to interpret; completely different from so many of the high quality response elsewhere on the forum. If there is nothing good to say . . . . . . . . A-Jay

  25. We Italians aren't stupid we just don't have feet that large. We gave you pizza, spaghetti, sausage, and don't forget my people were building boats and smashing grapes way before Columbus came here. But the knights Templars were here first so the Italians don't get the credit for discovering the new world we call America today. More Italians fought in WW 2 than any other nationality. They were proud to be called Americans and willing to die for this country. Size 15? That's built in swim fins. I'm just a spaghetti bender from Jersey what do I know. Bill

  28. Your question might have provided better information if you had asked about I.P.T. rather than gear ratio. There is quite a bit of difference between one mfg and another in terms of IPT even when comparing reels of the same gear ratio. Spinning and casting reels cannot be compared apples to apples in terms of gear ratio also, as a spinning reel with the same gear ratio of a casting reels will almost always move considerably more line. If you are just looking for a standard guideline the information that has been provided is very typical of most anglers.

  33. I am very competitive, even when fishing a lone so I always expect a lot out of myself. Sometimes I feel like I am an odd dude because I will refuse to leave until I have X number of bass or I will fish a certain bait for a long time, even if I know it isn't idea for the conditions, just because I think certain baits are more fun (i.e. Frogs).

  35. I go out alone quite a bit. I have phone service most of the glades and a gps on the boat. Apart from having some general knowledge of the area, common sense is all you need to know what to do/bring. Its actually hard to find a spot out there where someone isnt around or near by when on a boat. Everytime i TRY to find a place nobody is around, there they are, fishing in it lol.

  36. I would highly recommend you go with a Champion series over a Savvy for any technique where sensitivity is of concern. Champion series for any bottom contact technique and the Savvy for moving baits. I personally use a Champion Extreme dx704c for all t-rigs 3/8 to 1/2 ounce and it is amazing! I've also used it for Carolina rigs and I felt it handled 1/2 ounce perfect. I wouldn't recommend going to a 5 power for the weights you mentioned unless you plan on going above 1/2 ounce. I feel that the 5 power rods (champ 705c or DX 745) really excel from 1/2 ounce up as the tip loads up better with the heavier weights where the 4 power rods (champ 704,734 or dx744) excel from 3/8 to 1/2 ounce.

  37. If you don´t get bit with a Trickworm then you must not be doing something right, straight trail worms ( Trickworms mainly ) have been my number 1 worm style for more than 3 decades, maybe 80% of the time I tie a worm it´s going to be a Trickworm; my number 2 worms style is the ribbontail worm ( Culprit 7.5" ) and my number 3 worm is a C tail shape worm. I seldomly fish with stickbaits ( senko style ).

  38. Quantum reels are the predominate ones in my arsenal. I have an Energy PT IV, 3 Tour Editions and a KVD Tour. I also have the likes of Daiwa and BPS reels. I like my Quantums and I too feel that they do not get enough 'love' as well as some others on this forum i.e. Okuma and Pflueger. Like stated earlier there have been qc issues with some reels, but then again there will always be issues with any manufacturer. I believe personally that my reels are workhorses, able to do anything I ask of them and am able to do myself (casting properly). With that said, I'm a bargain buyer and have never bought a reel that I couldn't get for @least 40-50% off. I love my Quantums and will no doubt buy more in the future. I personally think they are on par with the likes of Shimano, Abu Garcia and Daiwa. When it boils down to it, rod and reel ownership and the opinions that follow are completely subjective and hardly if ever objective. The first sign of trouble with anything, and us fisherman are ready to say "never again will such and such company get my hard earned money".

Most of those people in the big citys have no clue how to light a match unless its for a joint or cigarette and if they were to camp for a few days in the big bad woods oh....my. 44. I went through a bottle of Maker's recently. It was very good. I wanted to do a test so, I bought a bottle of Jim Beam. I only do ice. The Jim Beam was....bourbon. I drink a lot of Sam Adams. While Bud is beer...it's not Sam Adams. Same (to me) for the bourbon. I like Buffalo Trace. I almost went Knob Creek. I think I will when the Beam is gone. I am certainly liking the testing.

  45. I'm in the camp that color only matters when it increases or decreases visibility. Rolo's comment about fish being color blind is closer to reality than not. Studies I have seen in the infisherman suggest fish do not see color like we do. And their range of color is greatly inferior to the human eye. Maybe they are color blind & only react to shades of certain colors. Fun topic.

  47. The rod can be spliced and will perform as before if done correctly. It's too involved for a post but you can call or email for help. It involves an inner splice and over sleeve.
