  1. We just got back from five amazing days of bass fishing on Lake Baccarac. Once again fishing with my good friends and BR members Dwight Hottle and 00 mod (Jeff) was a blast; both very good sticks and a ton of laughs. This second trip seemed especially sweet as it was a make-up job for one we had planned back in September. Unfortunately Hurricane Manual put an end to that one. Living up to their reputation of excellence the lodge accommodations were top notch. Great food & drink, a friendly attentive staff and the best bass fishing guides in Mexico make these trips ones to be treasured. We were blessed with favorable weather conditions on our four travel days and plenty of warm sub-tropical sunshine on all but one of our fishing days. The last day we fished in a stiff mountain wind and some rain. After catching the first few bass we were reminded of just how well-fed these fish are and when pinned to the end of your line they seemed supercharged. Virtually every bass we caught was fat & healthy and pulled like a fish twice their actual size. Total numbers of bass caught each day were not kept, there were just too many. As we were mostly interested in the “grande” bass Lake Baccarac is famous for, we decided instead to only track, weigh and photo the fish at and over 7 pounds. So how’d we do? Fishing each day from 6am to 6pm with a 90 minute break for lunch, we spent the first day and a half fishing several different baits at various depths attempting to locate the bigger bass while hoping to put together a pattern. By the afternoon of the second day’s fishing, the stable warming weather seemed to help position the big gals on main lake and secondary points in 10-20 feet of water. Spinner baits, Rattle baits and a Scrounger / Fluke Combo were drawing the strikes we were hoping for. By the third morning and straight on through the fourth day, it was on like Donkey Kong; the Big Bass were biting and we were hanging on for dear life. Man, these big fish pull hard. As a group, our best 5 fish bag went 50 lbs 5 ounces ! That is by far my favorite stat of the trip. I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate my friend Dwight on his first Double Digit Bass. A 10lb 2.5 ounce beauty of a Personal Best Beast that crushed a 3/4 ounce SK Redeye Shad off a main lake point in 20 feet of water. You fished long and hard for that big girl and definitely earned it, nice job. As usual Jeff was making it happen as well, landing several in the Big Fish category topped off with a 10lb 1 ounce Toad of his own. Though not a PB for 00 mod his string of Double Digit Bass on every trip remains intact; impressive. The capper of the trip for me came on the third day late in the afternoon. While fishing a ¾ ounce SK Redeye Shad (Sexy Shad) in front of some bushes on a “nothing” bank, I hooked what eventually turned out to be a new PB. The fish hit like a freight train and immediately ran for the bushes, I managed to turn her. Next she went way under the boat attempting to get free, I managed to foil that one. Then in a last ditch effort she went straight for the trolling motor, but my man Dwight had my back. With cat like reflexes and lightning speed, he snatched that baby up and out of the water leaving this now less inspired Trophy bass nowhere to go but in the net. Once our guide Manual placed the net bag onto the deck, with my heart just about pounding right out of my chest, the bait fell from the fish’s mouth. Wow, lucky for sure and quite a rush. This fish weighed 11lbs 11 ounces was caught on Nov 11th (11-11) ~ now that's going to be a hard one to forget. After getting a weight, photos and successful release, I had to take several minutes to collect myself – I had a bit of the shaky hands thing going on. It was cool. By now the sun had just about set and once I could no longer feel my pulse in my face, I went back to fishing. The magic continued on my very next cast. An 8lb 14.25 ounce bass sucked down that redeye shad and the fight was on. To tell you the truth, I don’t really even remember the fight. I was still numb from the previous events. Somehow the fish ended up in the net, there was a weight and some pictures taken in the dark and then she was released. That’s 20+ lbs in two casts. It was like dream – the good kind. It’s only been a couple of days and I’ll admit that the discussions on the trip home did mainly revolve around our next trip in March, but looking back that was one heck of a bass fishing adventure. The pictures & videos from our trip are still in the collection and editing process but will be posted ASAP. Additionally, I’ll be adding a brief video narrative to this thread discussing the rods, baits, line and terminal tackle; what worked and what didn’t. A-Jay

  3. st. croix has arguably the best customer service in the industry. i will say with complete confidence that they customer service woman you spoke with did not tell you that the LTB was tip heavy and "insensitive". Why would St. Croix pay for the shipping for your rod when you broke it? it doesn't matter if it's a complete accident or not. and then you are done because they won't send you a rob tube? seriously, you broke the rod, go get a 25 cent tube from any home improvement store. most will just give them away from carpet rolls. St. Croix asks you to pay the shipping of a broken rod, they fix or replace it for most likely free(which is why you pay shipping) and then they ship it back free or for 10$. and you're complaining that paying up to a possible 30$ for a 240$ rod you broke is unreasonable?

  11. It's all good - Admittedly this is the only trophy bass fishery I've ever visited. So I can't tell you if this one is any better or worse than another. But Lake Baccarac has been everything I had hoped for ~ twice. A-Jay

  14. I think you're right Brian, but these guys know this lake so well. By seeing and fishing it with the water down to 30 %, when it fills back up it's almost like cheating. They do not use any electronics and are constantly pointing out "The spot on the spot" even though it might be in 25 feet of water. The guides fished off an on. Mostly after we had beat up a new spot and perhaps not met our potential (at least in their eyes) they would spray a few casts and show us that we'd missed a few. I learned a lot about angles and fighting / landing Big Bass. Either way, when those fish are included, the hours fished per DD bass caught would go down accordingly. A-Jay

  21. Peter was nice enough to invite me out to his secret pond Thursday afternoon. Wind was howling too hard to try to put a boat in so we walked the edge of the pond, which made things a little difficult because the water level was way down and pretty shallow along the edges. I watched Peter catch the first 3 while all I managed to do was snag a bluegill on a rattletrap. I was dragging a homemade blackberry colored brush jig along the dam when I felt a very light bite and my line started moved off very slowly. The cold water didn't deter the fish from pulling really well and the jig popped out as soon as I got my hand on her. Didn't measure her but looked like she'd just eaten a big bluegill or another bass with the fat belly. My first fish was 4.67 pounds. We fished around the pond and only caught a couple more before we got to the far end with a bunch of dead lily pads. I had a couple bites on a pit boss and caught a dink or two before I switched to my homemade black and blue chatterbait. Got a couple more dinks and missed a good bite when I stuck another good fish. Another fat, strong pulling fish that was probably in the 4-4.5 pound range. We made it back to our starting spot and I was fancasting the chatterbait off a point when I got another light bite that turned into a heavy, hard pulling fish. I was barely able to keep her out of some cover before she gave up and let me get my hands on her. My biggest of the day went 5.57 pounds. Fished for another hour or so but we both only caught a couple more small ones. It certainly wasn't fast fishing but the quality made it more than worth it

  33. One thing about the Hummibird 5" models with the 640 x 640 pixel dislays, they have the highest resolution in the industry. 31,170.5 pixels per square inch. You will get the sharpest images with those, smaller than a larger display unit with the same settings,,but sharper. This is a creek channel screen shot with my 798ci SI with a trolling motor mounted transducer. The lines on the right side are vehicle tracks made during lake construction.

  36. Slone, First thanks for the kind words, second whatever path u decide to travel consider the stress involved, nothing flares my pain more than stress. Also as an estimator working from blue prints may aggrevate your injury, being constantly bent over a set of prints stresses your neck. My prayer is that u can get and remain pain free. I've worked as an estimator and a PM, either may be a valid option. And Raider I had union guys who wanted to sponsor me! Not all PM's are butts, Becoming a PM who has real world experience makes you a very valuable asset. Because you've been there and done it.

  37. Mashed the barb down on my 3/0 WG hook, pulled a little sub-pounder out of some reeds with a zoom lizard, and by the time I got 'em on the bank, the hook already slipped out. Made it alot easier for me, and for the fish Also caught a big little sunfish on the lizard by a dock, and hooked 'em all the way through his mouth. Hook slipped right out like nothin happened, where as I would have torn him up some if the hook still had the barb up.

  38. Rig it any way you want it, the difference between one and the other is that when rigged "backwards" ( by the pointy end ) the bait sinks AWAY FROM YOU if allowed to sink on a slightly slack line; something that can make all the difference in the world.

  42. I have a glass rod to throw deep divers and a graphite stick to throw squarebills and shallower stuff. I feel the need to "feel" the shallower runners a lot more to work them through the timber, than feeling a deep diver digging the bottom. The hookup to land ratio on the glass rod (for me) is phenomenal.

  43. Love a fiberglass crank rod for everything but squarebills. If you consistently are hooking into big fish on long casts with rattlebaits glass rods are just a better tool in my opinion. I can feel everything I need to including changes in bottom composistion, deflecting off cover, etc. That said, not every glass rod or the line its throwing are the same.
