  2. Alright, here is another thing I want to do for next month. This will not affect the number systems at all, and I will do this so Lou doesn't have to. For every catch I would like to record what lure and color you were using, and maybe how you were fishing it (weight size, line, and the way you presented it) if possible. I would like to take a survey for myself and for you guys that are maybe new to fishing a little, and maybe it will help to see some patterns. I follow the Farmers Almanac, and its also built into my watch. It will also help to see what baits were the most productive for the month, and maybe help others to try out a bait they may have otherwise not usually go for. If you would be interested, let me know. I would also take that info into what bait caught your biggest fish for that month.

  3. It's not just sex ... Try explaining to your casual fishing friends that you are catching bass on a "Spook". I don't care how long that name has been in existence it's still quite offensive to a lot of people. I feel very uncomfortable with that term so I refer to them as "Walk the dog" baits.

  4. I'm finding this topic getting real interesting. Posts, screen names, quotes in the signature area are not uncommon here, yet they have not been removed. The explanation is simple, the majority of the people on this site are male, not a minority and share the same religion, for the most part they just not been exposed to others. Case in point, every Xmas the well wishes go out for a happy holiday season, during the Jewish New Year a thread was made wishing people of that faith a happy new year, not one single post in response to that. I don't have to imagine what discrimination is, I've been living it for 68 years. I'm sure this post will be deleted, as the thrust is not intended for the use of a sweet beaver.

  5. No. The weight of a name is not as large as we permit it to be. It's not something abstract and contained by our "permission." Language is the most powerful tool we have to shape our perceptions. Language frames thought. Different languages alter perceptions according to cultural influences. Language and it's influence is to us as water is to fish......so pervasive, so omnipresent we sometimes don't even notice it. My objection isn't to "racy" language, and certainly not to sex. It's to the use of language to foster cruelty and exclusion. Naming women's body parts is the specific thing that I mean. It doesn't matter whether I "see" smut everywhere (which I don't, also funny!) It doesn't matter that the original intent of the manufacturer wasn't to bash anybody. Language has tremendous power all it's own once it gets out there. This is an objective matter. It has nothing to do with any of our personalities. I'm talking about language, not sex! I think that was the topic, wasn't it? Hey, it stung when one of you that I so respect implied I see sexual reference everywhere (therefore there is no real issue, only one in my prudish mind). Wow! Don't kill the messenger One thing I am sorry about is that I may have ruined the light-hearted tone of this thread. But I had to say something. We have many different ethnicities, minorities here who understand all too well how language is used. I plead guilty to being a bit heavy on this topic. Please understand.

  8. With me being a young bank fisherman, I know there are significant differences when deciding on what to throw and using different tackle then what you would do from a boat. I wish there was a "Bank Fishing" forum on here to try and limit and breakdown specific question when posted on the forum whether its from a bank fisherman or not. This could help us that strictly fish from shore and do not have a boat, or if you are just headed out on shore for a change. This is just my thinking and just a suggestion. Anyone else think it would help for us bank fisherman?

  11. scientists decided to create a new species of gamefish. so they crossed a koho salmon with a walleye, and came up with a fish called a ko-wal. well, it got real big and had nice markings, but it didnt fight worth a chit. so they crossed the ko-wal with a musky, and came up with a fish called a ko-wal-ski, and it was so f-ing stupid they had to teach it how to swim!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1FZCdEQjUM

  13. Oh lordy. You and Martin better never go fishing together. I can see the 2 of you in a canoe fishing, meanwhile the canoe is still up on the bank. That's funny right there, I don't care who you are. Lord I apologize, and be with the starving Pigmeys in New Guinea. Ay Men!

  14. Bank fishing forum is a great idea. It is really needed? I don't think so. Like someone said earlier, pin it and leave it in the General Fishing Section. This topic will help a lot of people. I bank fish 80% of the time and tips and advice are always welcome. Great polarized glasses is great tool to have while bank fishing. They allow the angler to see many things that are vital in catching fish.

  15. You can't predict the damage you are doing to your eyes with either ill-fitting, poorly-made or both glasses. I've heard people complain about the price of Costas or any other premium made glasses. You know what they have never complained about after using them? Eye strain and vision problems. You buy insurance for your cars, boats, health, etc. IMO, this is like purchasing insurance for your eyes. "Oh, I'm clumsy and I tend to drop things in the water / sit on them / allow the dog to eat them / have them stolen by the Loch Ness Monster." Obviously being facetious toward the end but you get the point. If you spend money on these things and still treat them with the disregard of a pair of aviator glasses you picked up at the gas station, then I dont know what to tell you.

Under Central Bass Fishing I started "So Y'all Want To Learn Toledo Bend" on Aug. 07, 2008. We have 178 pgs, 2,656 replies, & 296,202 views! Notice I said "we", because it'll more than one person to keep it going.

  21. Joe Balog baits? He is a pretty good smallie fisherman. It's a goby imatation of a tube. Drag it or work it slowly. I passed on them based on the price. Regular gobies have a straight fan tail. If you try one remember gobies do not have air bladders so they can only swim horizontally. They dart around the bottom. They are soft rayed & very fatty. I think that is the reason smallies don't puke them up. They most digest very quickly.

  25. Of course it is ... it's about everything fishing. Look at the main page of the forum and we provide a huge opportunity to discuss anything related to the fishing industry. That includes a whole lot more than dropping a lure in the water. Like everything else there are other aspects of the sport. I for one am happy to see a topic like this. Interesting discussion about the industry. Will it catch more fish ... no. It sure helps me relate to my fellow fisherman by getting to understand their opinions on a somewhat controversial subject.

  26. As you can see from the pics I am catching these fish way out in the middle of this particular lake on structure near deep water. A lot of the fish I am catching aren't on bottom. I have caught a few with a jig though. The shallow bit is done for me for the year. I will be focusing all of my attention for the rest of the year in or very near deep water in 15-45 feet.

  27. Yesterday I went back out to the same place that had ben so productive the day before. It was mostly cloudy with winds out of the southwest at 5-15 mph. Day time high was 48 degrees, water temp was 50 degrees. I started out fishing with the three most productive lures fro the last three days a crankbait, a spinnerbait and a jig. The fishing for the day was a little bit slower but still pretty productive. I was not able to cull any fish today unfortunately. Still looking for that 10 lber. I caught 7 largemouth and 2 smallmouth. The biggest largemouth were 5-10, 5-2, 4-3, 3-6. I caught my biggest smallmouth for the year a 4-1. I lost the biggest smallmouth I have ever seen. It was so fat and round that it could not jump. It just kind of came off. That fish was huge. I wish Ianded that one it was going to go on my wall for sure. I figured I would post a couple fish from the day 5-10 Largemouth 5-2 Largemouth 4-1 Smallmouth I am hoping to get out fishing a few more times.

  28. I agree with much of what KyakR has to say. Many people that feel PC has gone overboard probably are not women, or a minority that has received verbal assaults or have been discriminated against, no need to list them all. As far as a lure name goes I don't pay too much attention, but I do pay attention to people and their feelings.

  30. When placed in an uncomfortable position many people "attack" first. So if the people you are with are not comfortable with your hobbies (fishing, quilting, sewing, scrapbooking, etc.) they will say something negative to bring the others to their side against you. Happens all the time in real life. Deep down inside these individuals may be insecure or not used to ladies being interested in a "sport" which is a male's territory. A lot of young girls are not interested in football. So they do not wear either NFL or college team colors nor go or watch the games on TV. If a young lady likes football and has no support system (another female who likes football) then the girls who are not into football will critique and make fun of her out of their insecurities. My wife lets me alone with my fishing and I let her alone with her quilting. She joins me for fishing functions and I join her for quilting activities. When asked if I quilt we say "no, he fishes" and that's that. If anyone attacks me verbally I can turn on them in an instant and destroy them with a verbal attack. Not proud to be able to do this but it is something I learned many years ago. So ladies, you go fish and let the other women do the dishes, laundry, clean house, do yard work, shop and stay at home watching TV.

  31. The weight and gear strength of a spinning reel needed to accomplish deep cranking and heavy punching of thick vegetation would be essentially a saltwater type of reel. The reel would be extremely heavy compared to a comparable casting outfit. I would like to see the internals of a spinning reel that has been used for deep cranking for just one season. Guessing if the reel lasted that long the insides would be in iffy shape at best. The name of this site is Bass Resource. Nobody would come to this site expecting to discuss the ins and outs of saltwater fishing, trout fishing, or walleye fishing for example. Just like nobody goes to stream trout fishing sites looking for an exchange of info on popular bass gear. Yes, this site offers a "sub" forum for other species and such applicable discussions should be held there. Advice should be given with "bass" fishing in mind unless the person is asking for some other species specifically. As others have noted the main objective of this site is to help people become better "bass" anglers. The layout of the forum allows all aspects of bass fishing to be dealt with in a specific manor to maximize angler success. The spinning vs casting debate comes down to personal preference to an extent, but for those capable of using both, "most" will agree spinning for lighter lines and finesse and casting for almost everything else bass related. Pick the right tool for the job. There is a reason the overwhelming majority on here pick one over the other in various situations.

  33. Wouldn't a better title be "Behavioral Differences in Species Between Regions"? I grew up fishing in SE Texas, where there weren't a lot of SM, but any bass would nail a crawfish anything. I'm now in El Centro, Ca. and these bass don;t know what a crawfish is. 6 months fishing, not a single bite on a craw anything. Lot's of fish on a Rapala CD 7 or 9 in brown trout (they stock brown trout in this pond every spring) that a fish from SE Texas would look at funny. There just aren't any brown trout there. It looks funny/odd to them. Paying attention to local forage is much more productive than behavior of a certain species of bass. They will all eat basically the same thing. I've never seen one spit out a shad to go eat a crawfish or vice versa. I have seen them ignore something that doesn't appear to be their natural prey for the location.

  34. Im sure that the case but yet could be deceiving. If you saw me at my local lake in certain spots it looks like Im just swinging for the other shoreline when actually I found areas far out on bottom that hold fish routinely. One area off a point out 100-110 feet on bottom Ill throw and hit weeds drag a few turns toward me and the weeds stop for a 15' or so then weeds again. In this opening is where bite occur. Its been this way for years I know the spot and others like it. A good sensitive rod helps as well to tell you what out there your radar in your hands.

  35. With Kentucky bass it's never 1-2 it's always a school! We got into em in April back in 6-Mile & boated 35-40 in an 1 1\2 hours. If they weighed 6-7 lbs they would eat the prop off your motor thinking it was a buzzbait!

  36. why does everything have to be about race and offending a woman with yall? Zara Spook, racist? LMAO you got to be kidding me the Mandingo racist? Lmao, ever thought there was a porn actor with that stage name? Beaver offend you? get over it. I never ONCE gave the name beaver a second thought UNTIL someone said " the sweet beaver is a great bait, so about the name if it offends you." ONLY THEN did it click. Maybe, just maybe the only reason you are "offended" is you think in those terms in life? Perhaps if people's mind wasn't stuck in the gutter you wouldn't think in such terms....... it's fishing, so fish! If you want to be offended to the point where your adult mind is about to collapse then join a therapy group.

  38. MCS, gave me a new idea for next month. I will include a list of all the participants after the 5 day sign-up period. That way we all know who is in the contest . I have in the past told all of you how many participants we have but never who the participants are. I will include the participants names and what part of the state they are from. That way we have an idea how the different regions in the state is doing. What do you guys/gal think?

  40. Caught this extremely large blue catfish on a dropshot while fishing for walleye. Size 1 hook with a 3" gulp minnow, ML-F rod 10lb. test line. This area has some serious current as well, which made for a great battle. Lost another one that broke me off. My scale tops out at 25lbs. Anybody care to guess the weight of this thing? I weigh 210 for comparison. Regardless of the weight, it is by far the biggest catfish I've ever caught. Fish was caught on the Potomac River near Chain Bridge in Washington, DC.

  43. Any reel does more than hold line, it applies drag that slow and tires a fish. Loosen the drag too much will reduce your chances of landing a fish the caliber of a tarpon, too tight isn't good either. Reel of choice doesn't matter, but I do believe spinning users play the fish more, if for no other reason lighter line is being used.

  45. straight mono. P-Line OG (PF) or CXX, 25 or 30lb. You'll cast off baits on braid, especially 50lb. If you do use braid, use 65 or 80lb straight to the bait for topwater swimbaits or with a 25lb fluoro leader for sinking baits like hudds. Tie a crazy alberto knot to join the leader to the braid.

  46. it was a legitimate call and made appropriately. And if you watch the play he slid in, the throw was missed and he got up and stumbled over middlebrooks. The call is pretty easy actually and should be made regardless of the situation of the play. As far as the hit by pitch call on Beltran it is never called if a batter doesn't move out of the way but it is called if they lean in to the pitch, which he didn't do.
