I'm a huge fan of Siebert Outdoors (board sponsor) football and brush jigs. 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 oz are the weights I use the majority of the time.
Northstar Custom Baits (another board sponsor) makes a very fine quality jig as well.
even more reason to believe this place is magic. Today i was getting skunked, decided to pull out the big guns and toss a senko. Fish on and get this i didnt even lose it. First time i have been able to reuse a senko...
Picture or it didn't happen
You know, in FL it's perfectly legal to open carry a firearm while hunting, fishing, or camping, assuming you have a CCW license Might want to think about that one... LOL
I picked up 4 different models of Daiwa spinning reels of which only the SS1300 is still in production. Two of the other 3 models were top-of-the-line (or nearly so) in their day. I don't think I paid $100 for any of them. All were used but one, and it was on sale. New is nice. Good price on a quality used reel in good shape is better.
I believe the calculators are this length ^^^.... lip to fork.
I know in the bragging rights thread everyone is measuring tip, but the technical measurement of length is to the fork. That will cut 2-3" off of the length of the fish.
I have never caught a fish with a senko still in the package or out of the water, but other than that.................no, they work year round and on any type of presentation you can dream up. Some of the internet experts claim they are no good on shakey heads, drop shots, as jig trailers, or dirty water.......but I beg to differ.
Of those 2 choices I would take the 7mm Mag. I had one before when I hunted and it was by far the best rifle I have ever owned. The only downside to it is that the ammo cost more than the 30-06.
Brian, what you do when the drag slips on the hookset is say thank you, drag, for protecting my nice, new, expensive rod. If your drag is set correctly, as Tom indicated, it willslip on a geronimo hookset. It doesn't take much to set a hook. If your drag is set at 3 pounds, all three pounds of force are concentrated at one tiny, sharp hook point. It will penetrate.
My wife, two girls, and I get by on about $300 a month, and some of that is feed. We raise and can our own vegetables, have chickens for eggs and meat, and most of the other meat we eat is wild game.
Corey, first welcome to the forums.
Walmart caries a Berkley Lightning Shock spinning rod for about $50. I would recommend a 7' MH (medium heavy).
Add to that a $30 - 50 spinning reel. Spool it with 30lb braid. ( I prefer Power Pro)
Read through the articles section and pay particular attention to:
Tying a palomar knot
Texas Rigging soft plastics.
Fishing in dark stained water, always use a dark color. Black with Blue flakes is always a good choice for dark water.
Feel free to send me a PM if you have more questions.
In my experience a shaky head works better than a jig. Fishing for spots down here we tie a few sun flies above the ds bait. It's a blast catching 2 at a time.
Set the drag with the reel mounted on the rod you use: run the line through all the guides and tie a simple over hand loop on the line end. It takes 2 people to do this; hook the loop intro your fish scale, stand back about 10 feet,l hold the rod up about 2 o'clock and reel down until the drag slips or you reach 1/3 the line strength, do not exceed 4 lbs tension. With the load applied adjust the drag until the drag just starts to slip while your partner is telling you what the pound force is. Most medium/heavy to heavy bass rods are fully loaded at 3 to 4 lbs of tension. 6 pounds of force will over load a heavy action rod, unless it's made for lures that exceed 1 1/4 oz rating; flipping rods and swimbait rods. Most fresh water reels will not hold more than 8 pounds of drag load without causing severe damage to the reel.As mentioned you pay $$$ for state of the art drags.....use it.
Tom
PS; be aware that using dead weights and lift upright can overload most rods because you lift the weight with the rod. Don't exceed 3 lbs for most fresh water rods if you do this.
I have Rage craws on ALL my jigs, flipping, swimming, or casting it has always produced for me. I have tried other trailers in the past and get bit, but overall I see a huge increase in interest with Rage craws.
Nice_Bass, that was my guess, somewhere a little under 4 lbs.
Derekxec, I couldn't agree more. Pictures are terrible to judge size as the bass can look tiny or huge depending on how far away from the camera it is. Plus I am 6'3", 240lbs so if the fish is even with me or even a little behind me it tends to look small. So, based on that theory it was most likely a 8 lber that I just held too far from the camera and behind me haha .
Thanks for the input guys!
I like using a Gammy 1/0 weedless split shot/drop shot hook. I cast it out, let it sink to the bottom, Give it a good lift off the bottom and then let it sink again. Repeat back to the boat. If you rip it off the bottom aggressively enough you will feel the wiggles of both sides of the worm. Sometimes they want that aggressive twitch. Other times a smoother lift is needed.
This setup also worked for me skipping under trees and docks.
And I'm sure people are sick of seeing your negativity that you bring to threads. Do you think everyone knows how to search thru threads? Do you think everyone has the time to search thru threads like some of us do? What if its a 13 year old kid that has a time limit on the internet? What if its an old timer that is new to the internet? Also when people ask a repetitive question they might feel its more personnable when people answer in their thread. So have some respect for others in here even if you might not like it.
To the OP sorry for the distraction. Carry on guys.
You didn't give us any information such as age, fishing experience. type of water. weight of lures, or amount you can spend. I am going to assume young, no experience and $150 max. A spinning outfit will have you fishing almost immediately. Half dozen casts and you will have the casting technique down (but probably not accuracy).
Cheap good rods: Berkley Lightning Shock or Shimano Sellus. If these are too much, look at a Berkley Cherrywood.
Cheap good reels: Shimano Sonora or Pflueger Trion GX-7
The Shock/Trion will have you out the door for less than $90 with tax....about $75 if you can find a Walmart having a sale on the Lightning. My local Walmarts never do.
Approximately $10 more will get you a Pflueger President...an excellent reel for the money.
I would suggest a 6'6"-7' Medium Fast (or MH Fast) for a first rod. This length, power and action make for a very versatile rod.
You will get a lot more specific replies if you would supply more information.
If I haven't welcomed you to the forum before, then
Took my son to South Lake Park to kill some time, first cast with a lipless and this guy hit it 5 feet from the bank. My boat is being held hostage by the City of Overland Park and their road work. Ever since I gave sizzle my Cabela's deep cycle battery for his pond boat three weeks ago he wont return calls or take me fishing on the pond
That's quite a list of calamities right there.
Perhaps viewing it as "experience gained" will help you through it.
My Dad always insisted that assuming responsibility for and then learning from "Bad Luck", helps reduce the majority of it.

Well Braun is down how many more to go?!?! I made the nessecary waiver wire aquisitions, only have 1 named player on both my teams.
You all think fallout from this will help clean up the game? shape the playoffs? If texas loses Cruz that will be a blow to them.
What your thoughts on Chris Davis he swears he is clean, the only two guys I believe are Fielder and Miggy because they look like they never hit a gym before and they have produced since day one. Davis scares me a bit, I want to believe in him but I know from Palmero that you cannot trust anyone. Let's just say I am not willing to bet my salary on that. LOL
Siebert has the best customer service of any major jig manufacturer I have found. 90% of the jigs I use are northstar and siebert. I also like dirty jigs and revenge swim jigs. Wire tired and paint durability are major factors for me.
You can look a long time but in my opinion you can not find a better jig no matter what style you are looking for than siebert jigs--great jigs and great guy to deal with
I was out fishing at a pond in the winter for trout and we were catching them every cast...nothing big, but fun on ul tackle.
Before we got to the pond we noticed a red tail hawk perched in a tree. ..we started fishing and I hooked one, as I was reeling it in this hawk swoops down and grabs my trout. This happened 2 more times after another hawk decided to join the first one. Needless to say I Wasn't too upset, it was really cool to see.
ive also fed a heron a bluegill and have had a snake take a bluegill from the end of my line
It's always good to target visible cover and/or structure. But I also cover as much water as possible because there are lots of good spots where there is no apparent reason for it being good.

Please, allow me to put my boots on as I smell some poop.
i like the strike king kvd heavy cover swimjig in sexy shad with a zoom super speed craw on the back or the regular ultravibe speed craw, iv had luck with a zoom horny toad with about an inch bit off it. ive even put a shadilicious on the back of it. but u can also swim any jig, caught alot of nice fish swimming a eakins jig over and thru grass. anywhere theres cover and where the spinnerbait bite has slowwed down and the fish want something more subtle than a spinnerbait or a chatterbait has proven a good time for me, spring thru fall. just my experience is all. hope this helps u, if ur on a budget, try ur favorite jig and trailor in different situtations while swimming it. experiment with diffrent trailors also. let the fish tell you what they want is my best advice, there is no substitute for time on the water. good luck and hope this helps
