  4. My 12 yo daughter has been fishing with a kiddie rig for two years now. Whenever I would bring up the idea of getting a new spinning rod and reel, she fought it tooth and nail. My Dad (her Grandpa) told her that he was going to buy her a new rig. Saturday he went out and got her an Abu spinning reel on a Berkley rod. She loves it. We are heading out tomorrow to try it out.

  11. The turtles are probably stirring up craws and scaring baitfish out from cover and the bass are following them to capitalize on the easy feeding opportunity they're creating. I've seen bass follow carp for the same reasons. If they follow behind them they're safe, just like how small fish will follow by the tails of sharks and billfish in the ocean because they're out of reach as long as they stay away from the business end!

  15. I'm no pro who can cast lipless cranks 60yards, but the action and power of your rod helps cast certain baits better. Glenn says he pitches and flips to cups in his back yard to practice, I practice casting all the time across my yard. Distance comes in time. Accuracy is key

  16. I had the pleasure to fish with both Glenn and Kerri at this year's roadtrip. I have a pretty good pulse for who in the world are genuine good people, and these two fit the bill. While fishing with Glenn, I was able to hear the story of BassResource and its beginnings. I also heard the beginnings, motives, and accomplishments of Tackle the Storm. I was moved by the concept and thought behind it, to know what can be achieved in the heart of a child. Simply the smile it must bring knowing they have lost everything, but in some small way reach towards normalcy by fishing. A sport we all love and ourselves would hate to lose. As I told Glenn, the world is a cold, cruel, evil place and that's not going to change. But to know that I can somehow change that for a child for the price of a pack of plastics or crankbait......well I am all in. so here is what I am going to do, I hope you may also follow suit. For every "big un" I catch this year I will donate to Tackle the Storm, enough to purchase a child a rod and reel. Everyone's "big un" will be different, as everyone's water is different, so you decide. I have chosen 4#.

  17. Spent Friday through Monday up at my summer home with the family. Got out to fish just about everyday with decent success. Weather was in the upper 70's clouds and sunshine for the most part. Had a few storms trickle in on and off Friday/Saturday. Water temps were uppers 70's and broke into low 80's on Sunday with a lot of sunshine. I had a lot of blow ups at the good hours for topwater, and I spent the rest of my time punching weed mats with my new Siebert Outdoors tungsten punch skirts. I will write a review in the tackle section of that after this post. Overall I had a great time with a lot of blow ups on the frog. I think every bass that hit my frog I caught, but I missed a dozen pike or so. They just can't seem to inhale them the same way a bass can. Lost a really nice pike at the boat. Here are some pictures from the GoPro of a few catches. Big bass of the weekend. 21" and 4lb 11oz. Just goes to show you the length and weight difference of the northern bass vs a southern bass. This guy was fun to catch and fought like a beast in the thickest, nastiest slop. You can see how much lily pad and weed growth I have to work with. I love it. Big pike of the weekend. Just around the 30" mark. Nice fish that smashed my LiveTarget frog. A few more pictures of other fish. I have some video footage that I'll try to put together showing some of the catches.

  25. How I got into fishing: 4 years ago I used to hear all my friends talk about walleye fishing so I thought I'd go with them. We went under a bridge in town, being 12-13 years old shore fishing was all we could do. My friend let me use his 20$ rod ad reel combo and a mister twister and jig and somehow I caught a 16" keeper walleye and I was surprised as all heck and stuck my fingers in his mouth to find teeth. A week later I found my dads old 6'6" Shakespeare ML rod in the garage with 20year old mono and took it to the river around my house and sat under the bridge and casted my mister twister and jig combo for 10 minutes then I thought I got a snag because my rod was bent in half and I wasn't moving it. I started to reel in and I knew then after my rod pumping up and down it was a fish, turned out to be a 3lb smallie. I spent the next 3 months reading every fishing book in the library and watching bass fishing videos on YouTube from after dinner till midnight... I will never forget the feeling of that ML rod bending in half.. That's why I bass fish.

  27. Once fry leave the nest, they are fair game. By percentage, there are far more panfish and other species fry in any body of water, so those are going to represent a larger portion of their diet. Still, there's a reason "baby bass" is an available color in just about every lure imaginable.

  30. He does talk about suspended fish. His experience led him to fish open water during mid thru late summer; which in this area is right now. I just reviewed this chapter in the book. He talks about open water long line trolling, a technique that is done by such a small select group of anglers, that if it works - no one is talking (or writing) about it. Clearly the thermocline plays a role here. Any and all efforts have to be above it. There is no doubt in my mind that unless Bill was unbelievably lucky, his success using this particular technique must have come very slowing and required hours upon hours of nothing before he started putting together anything close to a pattern here. The more I think about what's happening on the waters I'm fishing, the more sense this makes. Right now the thermocline on the lake is at about 25 - 30 feet. The water is very clear, you can often see the bottom in 20 ft plus. Without much shoreline cover, there just aren't many places for the fish to hold close to the bank where they can't be seen. This is not going to make them feel safe at all. I don't think it's a stretch to believe that since they can't go down to get away from danger, moving "out" is the only option. This would make them very hard to find and even harder to catch. Clearly a very time consuming task and not one any tournament angler could reasonably consider which is why I believe that you just don't hear or read about it. I have the ability (boat & tackle wise) to make a decent attempt at this. Unfortunately this bite is fairly short lived but it's one I don't necessarily have to do at night which provides more fishing time. Mr. Murphy discusses the lures he found productive and I have some of the same or similar baits. But with this being a trout lake, I'm seriously considering adding a treble to a couple rof 12 or 16 Hudds and slow trolling them up, down and across the open water of the lake. Can't catch any less big bass than I already have so far . . . . . More to follow. A-Jay

  34. I figured out what its for when I went to the fireworks on the 4th. It is used I conjunction with a device called a cell phone to grab the attention of teenagers, especially those of the female persuasion, and prevent them from enjoying carnival rides and funnel cakes and live music and fireworks. It gives people the ability to show off small nuances in their pathetic lives to others lacking those nuances in their own pathetic lives. It allows adults to reconnect with people who didn't care about each other 20 years ago and confirm doubts they had about why they didn't keep in contact. Mix in a booty call or two and there you have it. My step daughter is one of those who has fallen for the spell. Drives me crazy how obsessed she is.

  38. As far as those spooted bass go, I once held the potential IGFA World Record in my hand. I had, like many others, hooked into this one and it broke me off. And like so many other bass, when it was thrashing around to get my broken off hook out of its mouth, it jumped into my boat. Not knowing the difference at the time, I foolishly released it back into the water without a picture or an official weight. But I am sure it was the IGFA World Record!!!! Jeff

  41. Why a magnum fluke? Why not a Super Fluke or a regular Fluke first? I fish from the bank too and i always have: - Shallow Cranks (KVD 1.0 in bluegill, sexy shad, chartreuse/black - Senkos (watermelon, junebug, green pumpkin) - Plastics to T-Rig (baby brush hog, paca craw, etc, all in green pumpkin) - Flukes/Super Fluke (white pearl, baby bass) Topwater: - Koppers frog - Cavitron buzzbait (black/black blade)

  42. There are 2 popular nail weights available, the expensive tungsten R2Sea 3/32 oz and the less expensive and some what larger Lunker City lead nail weight. The system also may include the worm saddle harness. All these item are available from TW. The rig is very simple; cut 1/4" off the worms nose to create a flat spot. Install the worm saddle harness about 1 1/2" above the worm nose. Insert the 3/32 oz nail weight flush with the worm nose flat spot. Use an Owner or Gamakatsu wacky weedless size 1/0 hooks and wacky hook about 1 1/2" above rhe worm nose or use the saddle. This rig is best used on 8 to 10lb FC line with either spinning or bait casting. Drop shot rods work very well. Cast, let sink while line wactching for strikes like a Senko. When the worm hits bottom it will stand up and you just make little shaky hops along the bottom. Very effective rig for all sizes of bass, water depths to 25'. Tom

  48. In it or over it. Top water lures that are weedless, hollow frogs, plastic toads, maybe a buzz bait. In it. - get a heavy tungsten weight at least an ounce, or and ounce and a quarter, and a soft plastic bait that is texas rigged to be weedless. Pitch it up there and let it fall, ur may have to jiggle it a little if it is really thick. Punch skirts are optional, but i like em. Either way, i would make sure that both my topwater rod and my punching rods are stout (heavy action or up) and fast reel loaded with braid. You said the water is clear, so you can use a fluoro leader, but make it at lleast 20# test, if not 25.

  49. Exactly. I love to fish a huge worm. I had a 40+ fish day last spring with a Manns Jelly Worm. I just use a 5/0 hook and set the hook like I normally do. I've even found that a big bass will inhale one of the 16" custom worms that I fish with from time to time. The funny thing about little ones is they will be the ones who try to rip the rod out of your hand. The big ones just pick it up and slowly swim off with it.
