  1. great fish, definitely a monster and a true beauty, but i am getting this eerie feeling that you maybe perhaps by some minuscule chance did not actually weigh the fish... I know i know, "let the guy be", "he is excited about his PB", yadayadayada. Welcome to the forum

  3. EDIT EDIT EDIT 6/18, 8am: I originally thought this was 8lbs, but due to a faulty scale, it is only around 6.5lb. Thank you everybody for your inspections and comments.! Hello everybody! Been reading stuff on this site and forum for a while now, and now I have something to share! New PB!! Caught this 6.5lb 21" bass on Lake Wingra in Madison, WI on 6/17/2013. Was fishing on the end by the dam in the water on a boat, water was only a couple feet deep. Fought hard with the lilly pads. After catching it, I was so excited I trolled the boat to shore and a kind lady snapped a picture for me. Bass was let go to fight another day. I am not sure I will ever catch a larger one in WI, the state record is 11lbs 3oz and that was 73yrs ago... Equipment I used: 7' St.Croix mojo bass plastic rod Quantum Escalade HD reel 30# power pro braid line Lure: Strike king shim-e-stick worm on 3/0 gamakatsu wacky hook, fished wacky style.

  5. Brian, open ended query that should give you enough information to scramble your brains. When I go to my double secret pond where we catch five and up ladies all the time, here is what I love to throw during the year: Jig and Pig - The big ladies love 'em but fishing is slow so unless you have patience throw something else. Baitcaster presentation. Senkos - Great bait in a pond. Throw it wacky rigged. You can use a baitcaster or a spinning rig for Senkos. Shaky Head - This technique is also outstanding. Use a green pumpkin or watermelon Zoom Trick Worm or a Swamp Crawler on a light shaky head jig head on a spinning rig and have some fun. Water is clear use watermelon; if stained go with the green pumpkin. Keep it simple. Drop Shot - Rig it up and throw it out. No need to drop it straight down as if you are on a river or lake. Finesse worms in the color of your choice work great. Just remember to lift the rod softly over your head to set the drop shot hook. Baby Brush Hogs - If the pond has any wood, grass or pads consider throwing a weedless Texas rigged Baby Brush Hog. Spinner or baitcaster. Crankbaits - Bandit 100s style usually work great in ponds. Sexy Shad or Chartreuse with Blue Back for starters and then change colors as you wish. Baitcaster. Shad Raps - Silver with black back or silver with blue back, depending on cloud cover. Spinning rig works them great. There are so many baits out there that the guys will scramble your mind. Keep a log of each trip so you will know what was productive and under what circumstances. Check out the log when you go back to the pond, especially the weather conditions you memorialized in your report. Senkos are so much fun to throw as they give you a rush when you see that line start to move. Same with the shaky head. Remember to walk about 50-feet away from the bank when moving around a pond; wear your polarized sunglasses; always have your needle nose pliers to remove the hooks in your pocket or tackle bag; and don't go overboard with rods and baits. Also leave a note at home as to where you will be and the time you are expected to be home. This is very important anytime you go fishing at a pond or in a boat. We call this our Float Plan. Good luck and let us know what worked and post a few pics of the big ones you nail.

  6. I love the Strike King Rage Craw in Falcon Lake Craw color. Here is a picture of some of my NS jigs. The far left is a Brown Craw in the Black Series. If you have the Knock out in the Brown Craw its basically the same. The craw has the perfect amount of orange/brown that set its off very well. So far for 2013, this has been my #1 producer for bass in clear and lightly stained water.

  7. Soft plastics, soft plastics, soft plastics... Wether it is a senko, a t-rigged trickworm, or a creature bait, bass in small ponds love soft plastics! Can't go wrong with a wacky rigged Yum Dinger!!

  8. First of all, welcome to Bass Resource. As a beginner bass fisherman, I would strongly suggest that you begin by reading the articles that have been posted in our Fishing Articles section. Also our videos provide very valuable information There is an encyclopedia of information posted in those places. Secondly, if you are looking for fishing tackle, I suggest you visit our Flea Market forum. Mike Goodson Global Moderator

  9. I use rattle traps (lipless cranks) when I fish a new pond that I havent fished before. They cast far so you can cover alot of ground. Keep them close to the shoreline cover but not too close to get caught up in the weeds. I would use floro or braid to be safe. I caught 27 in 1.5 hours today with this technique.

  10. It appears our friend hasn't been on the site since a few days after his last post. So I guess I can let the cat out of the bag now. Just after his last post, some sleuthing by myself ensued (yes, I'm patting myself on the back here), and I discovered the golf course he was fishing was the McDowell Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale Arizona. So I gave them a call and gave them a heads up. I also found better pictures of our friend, and forwarded it to them, along with a link to this thread, so they could positively identify him. Suffice to say, they were VERY interested, and appreciative of the heads up. They said they would increase patrols on that particular area of the course, especially after school hours. Our friend, Tyler, logged in a few days later, but didn't post, and hasn't been back since. As it turns out, bragging about illegal activities on the Internet is a pretty dumb thing to do. I presume he got caught, which is why he no longer visits here. Oh...just in case he didn't get caught...I had his mother's phone number handy, and was fully prepared to show her this thread with her son's pictures...bragging about dragging his little brother into his illegal activities. But, I presume the golf course did that already. I also know what high school he attends. It's not something I needed to know, but stumbled across it during our investigation. And no, I will not go into details how we figured it out. It wasn't easy, but Fluke and I have a combined 27 years of experience doing this kind of stuff, so....we'll leave it at that. The point I'm trying to make is this: We take illegal activity VERY seriously at BassResource, and will report and/or cooperate with the authorities in all cases. We will NOT tolerate it. It's clearly explained in our Forum Rules and FAQ's, and it played out here. Glenn

  11. Looking back at some of my older posts, I discovered something. I'm a "grumpy old man". So right up front, my apologies to anyone I have offended with my "grumpyness". Is that a word? And my appreciation to all on this forum for putting up with me. I'll try to put that part of me on a leash. That taken care of, I had a great day fishing today. 2 bass 5# each 1 bass 3#. Seven bass total, but those were my biggest. I can assure you, I won't be grumpy for a few days at least. Thanks guys, for your patience with a "Grumpy old Man". Hootie

  12. I know this is going to show how new I am at this, but I thought someone would get a laugh at it. Has anyone done the following before? I was bank fishing and traded out my 4lbs test line for 12lbs and was doing good at the end of last week. Well, Monday morning I got caught up in some standing timber and figured I would just pull to see if I could get the lure free and wrapped it around my index finger. I gave it a yank and immediately remembered that I had switched out my line. Instead of snapping the line or pulling the lure free, I sliced my finger open. It's ok though because it cauterized the cut from the friction at the same time it cut into my finger. I wasn't bleeding and I figured I would keep on fishing. That was the third cast of the morning. I moved to a different spot and, two casts later, got caught up in another tree. I gave two quick pops of the rod over my head to try and get it free, and snapped the rod. I guess you could say that it was a Monday for sure. I was a little frustrated because it's the only good rod/reel combo I have. I only have a couple of those $20 combos in the corner of the garage now. Oh well, I can use those until I can get something else. I hope this brought someone a laugh. It has taken me two days to laugh about it.

  13. I was in the same boat as you for a whole season in 2012, ok maybe not a whole season. I tried senko and other knock offs and I never caught a thing. So, this year I was determined to catch fish with it. It is the only thing I brought with me and forced myself to fish it, finally broke my streak. I caught a ton of bass, of course they were all 1-2 lbs. Still, nothing beats gaining confidence in a technique by catching and not "fishing". Maybe do the same and don't give up?

  14. MCS, good luck tomorrow. BTW I think I am in the lead, only until AK produces the proof of his catches!! (LOL, just messing with you AK. I know you are having technical issues.) I have not been able to go out much which is what I expected this month. The heat down here isn't helping either.

  17. I caught a nice 5lber the other day that was like that. Seemed to be a healthy spawned out female that was blind in her right eye. I also caught this little guy on a 4" senko that had a fluke with a 4/0 ewg attached to about 10' of line stuck in his throat.

  18. Can't catch fish that aren't there. With that water temp, there is a reason you are catching fish up shallow. They should be on the first drop or up spawning at that temp. My guess is you are fishing where you "think" fish should be instead of where they actually are.

  20. The drive shaft bushing is 5x9x3 and you can find them for around $10. I installed them on 2 of my citica e's and didn't really think it made that much of a difference. Switching to the curado E handle with bearings and bigger knobs was the best upgrade.

  24. What you are refering to is probably the Fenwick elite Tech Smallmouth rods. They are called smallmouth rods because of marketing and also it indicates what the actions and powers you will see in the series. For instance, you don't see flipping and pitching much for smallmouth so there isn't any longer heavy powered rods, instead there is a mix of moderate fast, fast, and extra fast actions in powers of medium light, medium, and medium heavy and the handles are slighlty shorter and only one spinning rod is 7'4", the rest of the series is 6'10" and under. If you talk to river smallmouth anglers most use shorter rods with lighter line, even the braid is usually less than 30# in most situations. You can use the rod for anything really, the marketing is just a thing to say that the series was made with powers, tapers, and lengths that smallmouth anglers prefer.

  25. Finally got a decent one to post up on a baby brush hog. But tomorrow is my last day fishing for a while so I didn't worry about a pick with the tape, did a quick measure and she was a solid 19". Besides it looks like AK is the only one playing this month, but where are the pics bro? LOL NIce work AK keep it up you got this.

  26. i have a booyah pond magic spinnerbait in white with a little bit of red on the head of it, it absolutely kills pond fish. also, texas rigged worms are a staple for any pond fishing arsenal. also rage tail lizards and baby rage craws and rage toads are great pond baits. shallow diving cranks work wonders as well, someone mentioned the 1-minus above, id second that. plus a white buzz bait...

  27. I'd have to say that if you are questioning the water quality, you are probably right to be concerned about eating fish from it. You know they sell fish at the store, right? Just playin'

  28. Traveler, we have a state owned lake about 35 miles from my home and my bass boat is allowed on it as long as I don't use the motor. It is a trolling motor lake, only. Never had a problem. I agree with your suggestion to contact the water authority. However, you have to make sure you speak with a person with some authority as lower level employees will take the easy way out and say "no." I really don't think six inches makes a big difference but you never know.

  33. Very soon, Tackle The Storm Foundation is going to announce a huge undertaking involving possibly 100's of children, young adults, and their families. It will be our largest donation of rods and reels to date and for the last couple weeks I have been scrambling to stock our warehouse in Alabama with as much fishing stuff as we can get our hands on, but we need money to do that...so after dinner tonight Barb walked out the front door to take Riley for a walk, and was shocked to see a very long skinny box leaning up on the porch. The universe works in mysterious ways because inside the box, were one of a kind fishing rods...one of a kind made by Adam Murray and the kind folks at CastAway Graphite Rods. CastAway went out and created a very, VERY limited edition of Tackle The Storm Foundation rods, beautifully done, and then had their four Elite Pros,Marty Robinson, Bill Lowen, Russ Lane and Todd Faircloth autograph a rod each. As soon as I get back from the Elite Tournament in Wisconsin I will put these rods up for auction on Ebay,, and every dime raised will go to buy the things we need to help all the children we have pledged to help. These rods could not have found a better time to be sitting on our front porch...then they did today. CastAway Graphite Rods...you rock guys,

  34. Thanks for the kind words! db sent me a link to this thread and I just had to register so I could thank everyone for their comments and support. The response to this little project has been absolutely overwhelming and I just cannot get over the generosity of the folks in this community. If you have not yet heard, all four rods sold the very next day after db had posted them on his Facebook page. The average selling price was $400 each!! This is going to buy a lot of tackle for some very deserving kids. I've followed db's fantastic writing for many years and finally got the chance to meet him at the Classic last year. As soon as he told me about his foundation, I knew we just had to do something to help out. CastAway is blessed with an amazing Elite Series pro staff and we all agreed that this would be a great way to help out db and some pretty amazing children. We look forward to doing more stuff like this in the future...it has to be one of the most rewarding parts of an already awesome job! Thanks again for all of your comments, support and allowing me to join your forum. I look forward to getting to know all of you better in the future.

  36. Buzzbaits man, I use a black one and a white/chart one...I am fishing this in a same type of lake as you are (Near Parry Sound Ontario). They are usually in the 10-20 feet, lots of rock, boulders, shoals and humps. There are sandflats man made for the cottage owners. If they are short striking my buzzbait, I place a trailer hook on it.

  37. I agree, and I'm kind of a stickler for not leaving anything on others' docks. This particular lake is mostly permanent docks on wooden or steel pylons, and even some old docks built on rock filled cribs made out of old railroad ties. As they slowly deteriorate underwater, they become snag magnets, and typically encrusted with razor sharp zebra mussels. Not exactly something safe to be climbing on or around, child or adult. But your point is important, and well taken, and to elaborate, even in this situation, never, never, never leave a hook in a mooring line or on the top side decking of a dock. That's an accident waiting to happen. In the 20 years or so we had our cottage on Port Bay, only a couple times did we ever find a hook in the dock. Says a lot about local anglers, I guess.

  43. I hate to admit it but back in the 70's, when bass fishing was new in Maine, the bass was considered a trash fish. Maine law books and many anglers wanted to rid Maine of bass. So the laws encouraged a no bass limit, and permitted just about a complete removal of bass from many waters. Of course bass were pretty resilent, and survived the early days. I like a lot of anglers at that time, would go home with a load of bass alive in the live well. Being tired and arriving home late, many time I would release the fish in another body of water near my home. what happened is that a lot of waters that were barren of bass, now are good bass fishing. Todays laws discourage any moving of fish from one body of water to another. Maine still favors the brook trout over all other species of fish. Many Mainers like myself would like to see the state stock more ponds and lakes with fish that Maine does not have. EX; Walleyes, Steelhead. It won't happen as long as there is a brook trout swimming in that water. We didn't have pike until about 15 years ago, and now there are many ponds with them, all at inland fisheries displeasure. In a quarry like you are discribing, sure the fish would survive, and probably flourish. Just be discrete about it.

  44. Went fishing today and got to borrow a pair of Wiley X P-17's with the Green Emerald lens. Great pair of glasses. The lens was very easy on the eyes and we were in bright sunlight a good part of the trip. Excellent polarization. I only have some Cocoons and my prescription polarized to compare but I could see much better under the surface. The P-17 frames were a little small on me so I'll need to look for a larger frame but I'm leaning towards Wiley X with this lens.

  45. So I've been around this Internet thing since around 1997 (33 yrs old) and since then I've spent a lot of time in various online social communities from the younger gaming crowd forums (very funny people by the way), early days of MySpace, yahoo user groups, YouTube commentators, pc geek forums, and tons of other odds and ends. I must say without a doubt, the community on bass resource is the most respectful, mature, helpful and good natured folk I've ever come across. I don't know if it has to do with fishing being the topic or what but I think there's something to be said about people that share this passion. Anyway, thanks for being such a great group. That is all. See you on the water!

  47. I understand you are young and do not have much life experience. BUT it's called "private property" for a reason. You asked, and was told "no". In my state that denial of permission makes it "criminal trespass" which is a felony. Youth does not exempt you from the law of the land. When you are older and have property of your own that you payed for and have to be responsible for accidents or injuries that occur there, maybe you'll have a better understanding of why it is this way. For now, I recommend you have enough honor for yourself and respect for the property owner to honor his wishes. Who knows when approached in a respectful fashion at a later date, he may grant that permission. HINT; never call. Always approach the man in person, dressed nicely, and be respectful. Sound like your Dad? I am a Dad. Another thing; taking your brother and exposing him to the consequences is not an honorable thing to do in my opinion. Just my .02.

  48. We do NOT condone illegal activity on this site. Trespassing is illegal. You properly asked permission (good for you!), didn't like the answer, so you ignored it (shame on you!). You got lucky once when an employee looked the other way, but don't count on it. He could get fired for that - perhaps he already has, or has since quit and been replaced with a much stricter employee. When you are caught and are brought up on charges, you'll have nobody to blame but yourself. So don't even THINK about complaining at that point. Bottom line when fishing golf courses or other private ponds, ask permission. If permission is given, be respectful and don't leave any trash, damage any plants or property, and don't abuse the privilege. If permission is denied, respect that and move on to another golf course or property owner until you find one who'll give you that "yes" you seek. There's no gray area on this. You don't have to like the answer, but you must respect it, and abide by it.
