  1. Looking back at some of my older posts, I discovered something. I'm a "grumpy old man". So right up front, my apologies to anyone I have offended with my "grumpyness". Is that a word? And my appreciation to all on this forum for putting up with me. I'll try to put that part of me on a leash. That taken care of, I had a great day fishing today. 2 bass 5# each 1 bass 3#. Seven bass total, but those were my biggest. I can assure you, I won't be grumpy for a few days at least. Thanks guys, for your patience with a "Grumpy old Man". Hootie

  3. My old man and uncles have "Grumpy Old Men Club" each Sunday. No wives. They all bring food and drinks and usually watch sports. I'll see if they're recruiting for any of you guys. :-)

  5. There are a number of private lakes I fish where the association has purchased or leased weed cutting boats. These boats are docked on the lakes throughout the season. The weed kills with herbicide are generally done before the vegetation gets a stronghold. Neither of these options seem applicable to your situation. Methinks water level has raised and it's underwater.

  6. Then bass fishing would be as boring as golf.

  7. Yesterday was a great day for me, I consistsntly caught decent fish all day long, at the end of the day I noticed a very big female tucked up against the bank. I tossed a chatterbait past her and slow rolled it back to me, on the sencond cast she slammed it. I barley got her on the bank, I really could have used a net. After weighing her she was 11.6lbs. My new PB, my buddy was as excited as I was and was adiment about me keeping it, im a strict catch and release angler. My question is, how big would a fish have to be before you would keep it?I've been fishing seriously for about 8 years and have never had a double digit bass. But even so I think I would have felt bad keeping her. Thanks!

  8. Trying to find- in cooler and stained water- the sort of bass I want to fish for; failing thrice in a row; snagging and losing big baits and small jigs; and catching a few 2-3 lb class fish. (About the third pic; the ground was wet and the fish was calm enough to not thrash around.)

  9. I want to wish all you dads a happy fathers day. I was blessed with being able to go fishing with my dad and son today as we have every Fathers Day I can remember. Fishing was good today although bass were not the target species since my dad can't stand and cast all day. We probably caught 75 fish today. Mostly small to medium gills, but a couple at 9". Also got about a dozen bass, some perch, and a hammer handle musky @ about 20"

  11. I have two go to lures..... if the bass are chasing then I love to use a rapala dt4.... if there more sluggish and I need to work for bites my all time go to lure is a texas rigged zoom brush hog in watermelonseed color.

  12. My go to lure is a texas rig worm. I can cast it into any tight spot, I know the various presentations well and can detect even light bites. Basically, one's go to rig comes down to what you want to throw and master. I am a martial artist and we have a saying that I think can be adapted to fit here. The saying goes like this "don't fear the person who has practiced 1000 moves 1 time, fear the one who has practiced one move 1000 times" Basically, what you decide to perfect will become your go to attack.

  13. First off, they're young. 23-24yo. Anyway, they're both pretty much broke. They qualified to fish the championship at KY Lake. The boat needed some carb work done and livewell pumps before they went. Kid who owned the boat wanted the non boater to help with some cash. They split everything else 50/50, and he felt repairs should be shared as well. Non boater didn't help and apparently they argued the entire week in KY. It's of my opinion, the boater should be responsible for all the maintenance and repairs of his boat. I guess some people feel differently.

  15. Well that's the kicker of the story, Im a minimalist when it comes to fishing, 1 rod and reel, small Plano in my pocket and and scale in hopes of needing it. I leave my phone locked in my car because I don't get service where I fish anyway. My buddy who was with me is old skool so no camera phone. All I have is his verification to the story and a great memory do that's good enough for me. thanks again guys for the comments and opinions.

  19. They are really tough to bend but I usually bend them up so there is barely daylight between the hook and the bait. It doesn't take much maybe a 1/16"-1/8" This is on spro popping frogs. They are just as weedless after the bending as they are before hollow body frogs usually always land hook points up because of the weight is on the belly of the bait. It easily doubled my hook up ratio.

  21. Glenn, 1. Have fresh line. 2. Tie directly to the Pop-R. 3. Throw out - let sit until ripples go away - pop it - reel in some slack - pop it - reel in some slack - always leave some slack in the line. Change pattern to a pop-pop-wait or pop-pop-pop-wait cadence to try to find out what the bass want. 4. Throw Pop-R parallel to grass and pads and around docks, piers, pilings and other structure you see. 5. Make sure there is a feather on the tail hook. 6. Consider changing front hook to one size larger. 7. Use mono to help keep the lure on top of the water. I don't like mono leaders on braid due to one more weak spot in the line. 8. Use a spinning rig. 9. Wait a second to two after the strike to set the hook. Easier said than done. 10. If bass misses the Pop-R throw a Senko or YUM Dinger to same spot as fast as possible. 11. Throw Pop-R first thing in the morning and then during the day. So many of us throw it at dawn and don't touch it for the rest of the day. How do you fish a Pop-R or a RICO?

  23. So, I guess it affects all of us eventually. Sometimes it actually works in my favor. I get grumpy at home and when my wife finally gets fed up, she says, "Will you just get out of here and go fishing?".... I win....lol "Grumpy Old Men".... hey! That would be a cool title for a movie! Hootie

  29. Yes, go ahead and spray it. It leaves zero residue and zero evidence other than the line being awesome to work with.

  33. Hooked > I personally don't kill "big, trophy sized bass". The bigger it is, the more important it is for me to release it unharmed... And here's why > Because by killing a huge fish, I will have single handedly reduced my own odds of catching a monster (that same monster) in the future ! Don't think it can happen ??? I have caught, released, and re-caught and released multiple big bass, sometimes a year or two later > with photo proof. And I've done this in huge res. of 20,000 acres or more ! {big bass can be very territorial} The first time this happened, we thought it was just the most amazing, long-shot thing that could possibly happen ! Then it happed again.... and again.... and again ! Nowadays we don't even trip when we re-catch and re-release a big fish. If you C/R enough big fish, it starts to happen on a regular basis. Bottom line; If I C/R a big fish, then you catch it, and it becomes your new PB, that's awesome ! Congrats ! Now you can do whatever you want with it. But I'll be honest, my primary reason for releasing that fish was to increase my own odds of catching a big bass in the future, not yours. IMPO, "well done" replicas, look better / last longer, anyway..... along with a beautiful enlarged photo of the actual fish, hanging right beside it Peace, Fish PS, I always have to laugh, when some guy hundreds or thousands of miles away from me, catches and keeps a big bass, from some random lake that 99.9% of us will never fish in, then some goofball gets his panties in a knot, over it LOL Hey, if that guy wants to "hurt his own odds" of catching big bass in the future, who am I to argue ? Releasing big bass, is just one of many reasons, that I've caught a bunch of big bass.

  35. 35 years ago I saw what damage WD40 can do, my customer was not very happy at the time, a mistake that came out of my pocket, I mention these things so those who don't have to get it right, or make their living servicing reels, don't make that mistake, the hundreds of people I rely on for my income depend on me using the proper parts tool's lubes and solvents. So a professional tech in the industry, I try to steer new folk's at the task in a safe trouble free manner, so they don't make those mistakes, and pay for them themselves. But I agree 100% you are entitled to your own opinion, and can continue to service your reels anyway you like, but I have never herd of any professional tech using WD40, maybe they just haven't found it's marvelous qualities yet??? my mistake,,,,TIGHT LINES!!

  37. I hate losing lures eacpcially to fish! Last night I went through a whole pack of senkos in 3 hours. Another day I was using too water frogs and like an idiot I made 3 horrible casts into trees and lost 3 different frogs! The line got wrapped around the branch and so I had to cut the line. What are the odds I lose 3 different snag proof lures in one day.

  38. I would watch out for a major headache in the first 48 hours since the incident. it may be the only sign of a deadly brain infection that will kill you about 10-12 days later without any other sympthomes. And if you get a fever head straight to a doc as well. The other day I got snakehead blood and water from canal sprayed DIRECTLY into my eye, and couldn't rinse it for hours. Some feared that the zombie apocalypse would start with me, but i'm still here and kicking a month or so later ;-)

  39. Sorry, have to disagree there. I have 4 of the Gen2 Premiers, an MGX and a Gen3 STX. I vastly prefer the dual brakes on the Premier and G3 STX to the IVCB system on the MGX. Much easier to set and much more consistent. My MGX now lives below decks as an emergency spare reel. I tried for a long time to get happy with it, even changing spool bearings after a few months. Just never clicked. And you read that a fair amount with the IVCB system. So I will not be buying any of the Gen3 Premiers with that same IVCB system in them. Oh, and in the G3 reels, the STX is only like 1/3oz heavier than the Premier.

  40. H2O Xpress Ethos, anywhere there is an Academy store you can replace a broken rod no questions asked. Heck doesn't even need to be broken, just got it and don't like it take it back, no questions asked. I broke 2 of their rods, totally my fault, set the hook high and hard right into a branch. SNAP! Then fell on the other one. They took them back, Plus it's one helluva rod for $60-$80.

  41. Yea I am the same way 100% of the fish I catch I release. I just take a few pics then off they go. I don't eat fish so there is no point in me keeping them.

  42. Depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. Depends on what I'm fishing. I keep 4-6 rods on deck at any given time. I change up if the structure changes. I may toss a jig at the dock posts and then skip a fluke or senko underneath the same dock and then switch over to a t-rig on a drop. This could all happen in a matter of a few yards. OR I could throw a PB&J mop jig all day every day for the rest of my life and be happy.
