  1. So I've been around this Internet thing since around 1997 (33 yrs old) and since then I've spent a lot of time in various online social communities from the younger gaming crowd forums (very funny people by the way), early days of MySpace, yahoo user groups, YouTube commentators, pc geek forums, and tons of other odds and ends. I must say without a doubt, the community on bass resource is the most respectful, mature, helpful and good natured folk I've ever come across. I don't know if it has to do with fishing being the topic or what but I think there's something to be said about people that share this passion. Anyway, thanks for being such a great group. That is all. See you on the water!

  6. That makes no sense. The bass in Japan and Cali get big because its the perfect storm. Many many variables come together to create the perfect enviornment to produce world class bass. Its more then just food. Non trout lakes in Ca have produced bigger bass then any place on earth except Japan. Add trout to those lakes and that's just one more ingredient to help them grow. Trout are extremely high in protein. They make big perfect weight gaining meals, much better then mammals and baby gators. Every lake in southern Cal has a lake record over 16lbs and most of them are over 18lbs. The trout definitely help but they are just one element. It takes more then just trout. They have the perfect climate for growing. Not too cold during the winter so they slow down but are still feeding and growing. The summer is not too hot where they are burning calories. Super deep clear lakes where they can hide from anglers and possibly the most pressured lakes in the USA so the fish learn to avoid danger which allows them to grow. Plus in Ca it is frowned upon to keep a big bass which gives them a chance to reach their maximum weight. The only other similar place to So Cal??? Japan. Sorry but the odds of any other place producing a 20lber are not realistic. If you think its cheating then that's your opinion and you entitled to it, but the facts are facts. When was the last time a legitimate 20 lber was caught outside of CA or JP? 80 years??? 50 years?? A few fish in the high teens( over 17) are caught here every year. Only Japan can match CA. I wish you luck on your quest of the WR but realistically you live in the wrong place.

  9. Hey Guys. I just wanted to hear your thoughts on Clay Dyer? He is such an inspiration to me. Living proof that your dreams are never to big. I believe we could all learn alot from him. He has alot of wisdom and is a sharp human being. No rude comments please because he is a good example of what good is left in this world. Thanks.

  11. I happened across a closeout on Rattling Raps at Dick's. I'm not that big a fan of them but it was such a good deal that the "bait monkey" got me. I took some of them fishing and couldn't get any but one to run straight. I tried over and over to tune them. Finally, in disgust I took the split rings off and tied directly to the loop. That didn't work either. Finally I tied on a snap. Low and behold problem solved. I took the split rings off the rest that I'd taken with me and used the snap. Apparently the rings were the problem. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem with these or other baits?

  17. I really like the Carbonlite rods (especially the Mico guide version) but would not own the reels. I know people that work for Bass Pro and they have informed me the newer Carbonlite reels have some issues. They say the Pro Qualifiers are a better choice for reels. I would reccomend a 7' or 7'6" MH for jigs and flipping and pitching. For crankbaits I would say the Crankin Stick in a 7' or 7'6" MH would be a better choice since the Carbonlite isn't really made for crankbaits.

  18. I would go with a Spinnerbait next. That way you have both a finesse and power method under your belt.

  19. I cast it and let it sit for a 5 count. 3 pops quick and then a 5 count pause. My old man taught it to me and its worked for years. I'm sure other methods will work, but if I get out of sync, I can visualize my dads hand making contact with the back of my head lol

  20. Hi Stitch - glad to hear you're out on the water. Which size Rap was it and what type / pound test line were you throwing ? Sometimes the smaller rattle baits run a little funky when thrown on a heavier line. A-Jay

  21. I agree with Darren regarding the statement of buying a rod or reel without handling personally. Even if a rod gets a 5 out of 5 from everyone, the feel may not be right for you. I never buy a rod/reel without holding it and looking at the workmanship. Hence why I haven't bought a Phenix Rod, Lews or an *** Black. All get rave reviews, but without holding it (no dealers close by me). I won't buy new, used maybe an option to keep open as you can hold and feel the rod before purchasing if no dealers are nearby. I do not have experience using either of the rods you mentioned, but in the range you are looking at..my recommendations would be - Veritas, Compre and Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth..I sound like a broken record, but that last rod is amazing. Very sensitive and can handle all what you are looking for.

  22. u kinda get what u pay for in the reel dept with exception of some brand IMO, but shimano citica is a great starter reel for the price, i would reccomend it over the revo s for sure at the same price point. with that being said, another 30 bucks gets u a curado g or a revo sx, now ur starting to get into the lines of 160-165 and i feel is a big jump in quality from the citica. just my opinion. and then another 30 gets u a stx or a chronarch, as i owned and still own all of the reelsmentioned above with exception of the revo s, i have had a few lemons in the batch but overall pleased with all of thier performance. but they do seem to perform with a few trips on thier belt, i guess its the movements n motions of using it possibly that work the parts thoroughly? but hope this imformation has been helpful.

  23. Every Shimano reel I own, gets smoother with use, I can't say that about any other brand. In fact just the opposite, they start out smooth and go downhill.

  25. Ya' know, I'm sure we had this exact same kind of thread a while back, and what's funny, if I remember correctly, it had the same kind of tone in the OP, and then had the same kinds of initial responses.... at which point, I said the same things I stand behind now.... First off, I think their might be more bucket fishermen and, more of them that actually catch fish, in the Southern US. I spent 3 years in Louisiana, and compared to Nor Cal, this is just what I saw, first hand. That said, on the fairly rare occasion I see a "bucket fisherman" up here in Nor Cal, they have almost never caught squat, to begin with ! They'd have to fish for a 10 years, to fill that 5 gal bucket LOL Oh sure, their will be exceptions. Heck, I used to be a bucket fishermen > which is to say, I carried all my tackle, bait, etc, in a 5 gal bucket, while I walked "miles" of shoreline. Use to whack em' too. Released all of them. However, you just will not catch any number of fish, in the lakes up here in Nor Cal, sitting on the shore, in any one spot. Bottom line > Most of these so-called bucket fishermen have pretty much zero effect, on anything I am fishing for. Peace, Fish PS, Reading back over the responses, Marty your right that "small ponds" could be effected.... but the question would be, how small ? I mean, obviously if you can cast all the way across it.... or your cane pole reaches to the center LOL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Edit: Around these parts, the people you have most to blame for hurting fish populations is not bucket fishermen.... It's the straight up, professional poachers ! These guys are high tech ! They don't sit in one spot, on the shore, like a goof ball.... they get out on boat, and use every technique, legal or otherwise, to catch as many fish > over the limit, as is humanly possible, and keep every last one of them ! I'm SURE these idiots hurt my fishing

  26. Btw that senko isn't too big on the delta, it's a bit small, the 6" and 7" ones will catch 1 1/2-6+ lbers all day long, also I recommend tnt baits Wadda jig in 1/2 oz in brown. It's unbeatable there
    1 point
  27. Those two are completely killer on the delta, wacky rig that senko and its the right color and bump the speed trap on the tules and there's a 99% chance you will catch something, let the senko fall weightless and twitch it a few times, then reel up and move to a new spot to cast

  28. I would also look at trying the 7" ribbontail worm or a baby brush hog

  34. The Delta system is a world class bass fishery, the difference it is tidal influenced. If you want to save a lot of time and money my suggestion is contact Andy "Cooch" Cuccia. Cooch giudes on the delta and time with him would be priceless, give him a call. Tom Cooch has a Vedio on utube that should get you started.

  35. Not only read, but also watch a lot of videos on youtube. There are a lot of informative videos. Pay attention to how they fish a particular lure you might be interested in. With access to so much valuable information these days, you will be catching a fish in no time.

  36. Senko's are excellent to start with...i know frogs this time of year work good also...go to this site...he is a top guide on delta and is very helpful...good luck! thefishinginstructor.com p.s. leave alittle slack in your line and let fish take the senko...set the hook right before line fully tightens...senko's are loaded with salt and bass don't let go quickly so no need to set hook too fast

  37. Walk up and down that shoreline and cast that senko around those docks and boats and let it sink to the bottom. If its a big enough fish you probably won't feel the "tap tap tap" of a little fish. The line will just feel heavy or start moving. Reel in the slack and do a strong sweeping hookset. That should get you a fish before long. Or just cast that crankbait along those docks as well. Reel it in an bang it into the dock supports, or do an erratic stop and go retrieve.

  40. What I see is a man in the spotlight without a blemish on his "character". You're not going to read about Tim out gang banging at a strip club nor arrested for DUI at 3:00 in the morning. He is a role model for our youth and an inspiration to his fans. I wish we had more men likeTim Tebow, George Brett, John Elway and Cal Ripken.

  44. Sorry, have to disagree there. I have 4 of the Gen2 Premiers, an MGX and a Gen3 STX. I vastly prefer the dual brakes on the Premier and G3 STX to the IVCB system on the MGX. Much easier to set and much more consistent. My MGX now lives below decks as an emergency spare reel. I tried for a long time to get happy with it, even changing spool bearings after a few months. Just never clicked. And you read that a fair amount with the IVCB system. So I will not be buying any of the Gen3 Premiers with that same IVCB system in them. Oh, and in the G3 reels, the STX is only like 1/3oz heavier than the Premier.

  45. NW!!! Check out Dick's for this week's specials for Father's Day. They have a Skeet Reese baitcaster combo for $80. Great start and under $100. You can use the remaining $20 for some line and baits, like crankbaits, spinnerbaits, Chatterbaits, Senkos, etc.

  47. I have a couple thoughts on that: 1. If you are not confident that what you are doing is the right thing, you're probably right. 2. This is where the "tournament mentality" of most guys begins to get in the way. You "have" to catch fish or your "have" to be good at a bunch of different stuff. No, you don't. You HAVE to be good at one technique. That's it really. The better you are with one technique, the more you will use it and become familiar with the nuances of that technique. This breeds confidence. Confidence catches fish. "Beware the man with only one gun. He probably knows how to use it."
