  1. Over two years ago I made a post in the Smallmouth section mentioning my mild obsession with catching a 7 pound smallmouth and asked those to post a picture of thier 7 pound+ smallmouth (below is a link to that thread) http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/84036-quest-for-the-7-pound-smallmouth/?hl=quest Since that post, I read and digested what I could concerning catching big Great Lake smallmouth. I talked with Scott Hovanec about his experience on the water several times and BRONZEBACK67 gave me a lot of good advice. The one guy who really provided me a lot of information was Dwight Hottle. I read and reread his posts and even talked with Dwight a few times on the phone (what a nice guy) to really understand his system. I even ran into Dwight and AJay on the water this past Monday and talked with them a little more (AJay is a really nice guy as well. I have yet to meet a jerk from this place, which is what I think makes this a great forum. Only nice guys are here). So after digesting all this information, adapting Dwights system to fit my style and boat, and having an incredible amount of luck on my side, the dream finally happened. Yesterday around 10:30am, I caught that 7 pound Smallmouth that I have dreamed about catching for the last seven years. It was 21.75 inches long with a 16 inch girth and it weighed 7 pounds even (talk about JUST achieving your dream). Fortunately, my friend and his father were also out fishing not far from me and I called them over to witness the measurements and take my picture. After the photo, the fish swam off strong and ready to make someone else's dream come true (that is assuming there are other idiots out there like me that dream of catching a fish). It was just a great experience to finally achieve that goal. Now on to that 50" Muskie!

  3. Chad and I are headed back to Dallas and I wanted to thank Glenn, Kerri, Long Mike, Alpster, and RW for all the effort they put in for us! Big O, thanks for the presentation on a cold rainy night and all the Rage products you shared with us! I also wanted to thank the whole BR road trip crew for an awesome good time and memories!! To those that couldn't make it, the catching was non stop and the camaraderie was excellent!

  6. Probably a thread looking for a short life span. Like Maico noted, a reel is only overpriced if you paid at or over full retail for a current production reel. There are always guys out there that are best described as "best bang for your buck". Typically wont fish a reel over $100 and may prefer setups that are all purpose. At the opposite end you have the high end enthusiasts/collectors. These folks look for simply the best of the best out of a reel that may only be used for one bait or style of fishing, something rare, or a reel with a color scheme to match a rod or custom build. Is the guy fishing Texas rigged worm with the $100 budget reel missing out on any more fish than the guy using the megabass hedgehog or Daiwa Z? Did the guy fishing the latter over pay for a reel? The answer essentially lies in level of expectations, budget, and level of perfection one looks for. Some folks meticulously take care of everything they have to a level of care that would drive most people nuts. Then you have some that are in more of a hurry and just sort of toss things around without second thoughts and are harder on their equipment. Since a reel for these folks will be put through the ringer they may have a hard time justifying a "pretty reel" since it will get beat up quickly. I know guys that refuse to buy reels other than pro qualifiers and others that only fish $300-$600 reels. Guess what, ... the guys catch the same amount of fish and do equally as well on the water. The guy fishing the $300 reels has a totally different expectation of his reels, and while they may not catch him any more fish he says he gets more enjoyment out of them with respect to their looks and performance. So back to the question at hand... without bashing brands that I don't care for I will say that most reels in today market place are priced fairly for their market segment for what they offer the angler in their stock form. While I have a reels from $100 - $500 in the rotation I have no problem catching fish on the $200 and less reels nor do I have an issue with their performance. It all boils down to angler preference / expectations / budget for determinimg the price to performance ratio for a reel.

  8. Right now I'm using berkey vanish FC and I've heard nothing but bad reviews on it.. I have a 4ft leader on my jig rod of 14# test and I'm afraid I'm going to lose my jigs with it. I'm fishing 1/2oz Siebert Outdoors "Big O" jigs and 1/2 oz swim jigs.. What # test do you think I should buy? I'm fishing <12 FOW or less pitching docks and lay downs. Thanks for the advice!

  9. No need to give up using Rage Tails since I can copy them in colors I chose anytime and make the craw attachments more durable by over-pouring a bit. Good point, well said! There are subtle differences in trailer tail actions and like most similar type lures, discriminating anglers have to feel something is appropriate, individually and with bias. Cost is a factor when unit cost is beyond the unique value of something - such as the Rage Tail - and I personally do not chose to pay triple for something I could make myself or find a reasonable or better substitute costing less. (BTW the jighead I used and added a skirt to was from Lurecraft. I wouldn't suggest buying them because the bristles fall out after a few trips. I buy most of my jigs from http://www.tourneyjigs.com/ and add skirts bought from fishingskirts.com.) Frank

  10. Weights went up today! Plenty of 3- to-4 pounders caught today. Most people caught 20-30 bass - a mixed bag of largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. I had a double-digit bass break off on me!! Should've retied a few casts before that. Doh! All-in-all, a great day on the water....again!

  11. Things like fish photos, though they seem insignificant, give me a lot of insight into my own hangups, and I like to think that when I can be honest about my hangups, maybe I'll be able to be more gracious to others about theirs. I don't think we can really begin to live life authentically together until we can admit that we are small and frail and therefore, we owe others the grace to be small and frail in their own ways too.

  12. This thread has become a pile of poop. You guys can't judge a product by ebay prices. They are all over the price map and many of their prices are guys that get great discounts and are selling it for crack head price because they're just selling it out of their trunk. You have to judge it be retail price. On the other hand a product is only worth what you're willing to pay for. Why buy a Lexus when a Toyota will do just fine getting groceries and taking you to work? Some people like things more refine and they can afford it. If we all live by the ignorant thinking then BMW's, 500k+ houses, premium suites, John Deere tractors, and anything premium are all over priced. The truth is if we all were millionaires we'd be buying some high end fishing gears that many others would say its over priced.

  14. Here's what I've found.....Chigger Craws, Yum Craws, Net Bait, and most other "claw" dominate baits......and I have quite a few..."flap" their claws in an alernating action, i.e., one after the other. The Rage Craws 'swim', 'flap', 'roll', whatever you want to call it....but they do it together at once.....main difference. Now is this a bad diffrence? No. Each style has it's place. I personally prefer the alternating flap under most circumstances for my jig trailers, Rage Craws when the fish are really active during what we call here in OKla. warm water....hot for most of the rest of you. Rage Craws are awesome rigged tex-rigged alone. I've posted here before about all the different ways they can be fished this way......swim on top, swim sub-surface, hop, drag, etc. But for a jig trailer I prefer the alernating "flap" action.

  17. If no one had the nerve to try something they had never done before, nothing would EVER get done.I bet Mike had to service his first reel before there would ever had been a second one. It's great to have someone to instruct you, but that's not always possible. I have tackled a lot of jobs for the first time. Matter of fact, anything I ever did, I had to do it the first time. Sure, I have had some dismal failures, but also a lot of successes. Hootie

  18. I've found that color selection is more important while ds'ing than most other presentations. There are exceptions of course. Some days they will slam any color, but other days bass can be very picky. Just last weekend I fished Burke Lake down in your neck of the woods and the patterns were nothing like the Potomac only 2 miles away, despite similar water color and temp (fish were also deeper and oriented more to depth/structure than cover.) I had to upsize the offering and go to a darker color. Fish started to nail it then. The distance between the bait and weight can also be a factor, though not as important. Are you 100% sure there are fish in the area you're fishing? I should also mention that if you're not using a tungsten ds weight you might be missing more fish than you know. Lead weights are so soft that a strike often feels the same as when the weight is hitting the bottom. A tungsten weight will allow you to feel the difference between when the weight is hitting a rock/log and when a fish is inhaling the bait.

Paired it with the Lew's TP and they look great together and feel amazining! Can't wait to get some line on it and put some smallies in the boat! Just wanted to say thanks for all the great info and input you guys gave me!! Dave

  24. Fished the Dotte this afternoon. Pretty strange to see only one other trailer in the lot when I pulled in. Anyway, I caught five in about three hours. All caught on a jerkbait. Used a smaller jerkbait today than I have in the past, and that seemed to make a huge difference. Two fish were 14.5"...caught one in about two feet of water that had a bloody tail. Looked for beds for awhile afterwards in the same area, but didn't see any. They'll be moving up very soon.

  26. It's a good starter rod. Nothing fancy and is not going to be extremely sensitive. It is not on par with the vendetta as mentioned above but If you want a really good rod that IMO surpasses the vendetta and is cheaper retail get the H20 ethos (I own both)

  27. Was a good day fishing at Winni (Lee MIlls) took my father with me total 16 fish, Most on blade runner jigs with rage crawdad for the trailers. My dad still catches them on a chartreuse gitzit ugliest thing if you ask me but he gets them. Smallies were right near the shore. I also saw two beds nothing on them so wont be long now up there. Crawdad color seemed to be the go to color for me. The weather man lied it was windy up there

  29. now, now shane. simmer down. no one has personally attacked you so there's no need to personally attack anyone else. this is not a contest or a challenge. the title of the thread says, this is about alternatives. it's always so refreshing to see someone with such supreme self confidence and positive self esteem on here. me, not so much. i am an average fisherman at best and i learn things every time i hit the water. you are obviously a great fisherman. much better than me. infinitely better than me. i idon't care which baits are better and i don't care which one of us is better. fish how you want and can afford and so will i. i get to use what i want to fish with and so do you. ragetails are great baits. i have caught a bunch of big fish on them. it's not the product that i have issue with, it's the price. peace man. so much drama over baits. wow. 30. We have many options for our arsnel. In fact, we have way too many options which cause us to purchase baits that we will use once or never or shy away from techniques that we are unfamiliar with. Our armed forces has a lot of weapons in their arsnel. And they practice with each one to become proficient when the time comes to select the most effective device to serve their purpose. We bass fishermen have to do the same with our baits, tackle and techniques. You will not be fishing your current pond your entire life. You will venture out and fish other ponds, lakes, rivers, reserviors and creeks along the bank and in a bass boat. You will encounter other challenges when fishing and you need to be familiar with other baits and techniques to use. You may leave the island and come to the mainland and work and you will have to be able to adapt to that part of the US you will be living. So how do you do this? You read books and magazine articles plus purchase DVDs regarding baits and techniques. You start a library and file the written articles for future reference. You watch and rewatch the DVDs during the winter down time or before you head to the pond to practice that technique even if you do not really have a winter in your area. You mentioned spinnerbaits and that they don't work at specific times of the day. On that day at that time they did not work. On another day and time they can be extremely productive. But you you have to have the knowledge regarding their size, colors, blades, water clarity, structure and other variables to make them work better. Check out Hank Parker's spinnerbait DVD plus others about fishing the spinnerbait and master the spinnerbait technique for future use. As tbone mentioned, leave all other baits home and rig up for one specific technique and practice, practice, practice. It does not matter if you catch anything. You want to learn the presentation so when the time arrives that you want to change baits and techniques you will be familiar with the one you will be using. You want to learn how the bait feels without a fish on it so when it feels "different" you will set the hook. And by doing this you will have to learn about fish habitat and their habits. You have to know when to throw a shaky head, a wacky Senko, a drop shot, a Texas rig, a Carolina rig, the many different sizes and styles of crankbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and buzzbaits plus other topwaters. You can drive yourself nuts with all of the options we now have at our disposal. Please read about rods, reels and line. As a part of your weapon platform you have to make sure you have the correct rods, reels and line as you mentioned in your post regarding line selection for each presentation. Read the reviews at Tackle Warehouse and also what rod lenghts and power ratings the pros use for various techniques. So how do we do it? We read. Watch TV fishing shows. Watch DVDs. We monitor this Forum and read the suggestions from fellow bass fishermen. We go to the pros web sites and read their tips. We read the tips at the top of this Forum's page. We join a bass club to learn from guys who have years of experience. We go fishing with a guide from time to time to learn a specific body of water. We fish with each other and learn from that experience. We talk to other bass fishermen. And we go out and practice new techniques or update old techniques. Consider suscribing to various bass magazines. Join B.A.S.S. or FLW and receive their publications. Visit the pros' web sites, especially Hank Parker and Woo Daves and read their articles. And start to think like the military and have a good arsnel of baits and techniques at your fingertips so you can be the top bass fisherman on the island. Good luck and remember to read, read and read some more as you practice, practice and practice!

  31. My girlfriends daughter is only 2 years old. One day, we all went to Walmart and look. So I go on over to Fishing department to see anything. The daughter wanted to go with me and she saw a Barbie fishing rig. So, i bought her it and twin tail grub along with it and such. So, we went on fishing and I taught her how to cast and such. Shes only 2 and she did learn a bit. Couple casts and helping her and all. She hooked 2 lbs bass. It made me proud! I cant wait one day and hear her say lets go fishing!

  34. Weightless 5" Senko in watermelon/blk flake or green pumpkin or black Texas/Wacky rigged, cast out let it sink pull up SLOW let sink again and it takes a long time to sink so this is definatly a SLOW SLOW SLOW bait and you have to keep telling yourself that, watch the slack line on top of the water for ticks or movement (when this occurs) put the rod down reel up the slack and set the hook firmly. You are relying on the fall of this bait. I love senko fishing it is what got me into bass fishing and i know you can pull those 2 or 3 lbers out when that senko twirls down in front of there nose, No bass can seem to resist it! Tight lines buddy and remember SLOW! Id go with wax worms for the bream and who cares about the carp;)

  37. WRB and cadman - props guys. y'all said a mouthful. SENKOSAM - congrats on discovering a great bait. no disagreement here. i think it's every bit as good as ragetail or zoom. welcome to the ever-growing fraternity of cost concious anglers on this board who think for themselves, rise above the propaganda and hype, refuse to be sheep, and catch just as many fish for less money. to the guys on the board that post so favorably about ragetail because you get free baits (yes it happens) - your bought and paid for opinions are irrelevant to a lot of the members on here. it's easy to spot you, gushing and cooing about the baits at seemingly every opportunity trying to influence other members to spend their hard earned coin on baits you are getting for free. to the guys who choose to BUY ragetail, zoom, or whatever because you like it and believe in it, that's cool. i hope you catch a ton of fish on them. what you are willing to pay to enjoy the sport you love is your business. have fun. bottom line, fish what you want and be happy.

  38. Because there are a ton of little bass in there the big boys are probably targeting those 8-10 inch bass. I would throw some bigger baits, swimbait and jerkbaits that are in a baby bass color. Or if the fish are active in the morning or evenings I would throw a top water hollow belly frog, those tend to get bigger fish. Good luck.

  44. Here's the thing, as much as I love, and fish, the Lobster, Craw, and Baby, they just don't work for me in every situation. Regardless of how loyal I am to them, I also fish the Critter Craw, Craw Papi, and a handful of others including the Creme craw. One of the primary reasons I fish the Rage Tail baits is the fact that Big-O is as active as he is here. It's tough to find that dedication and experience anymore, even in an industry that relies heavily on that standard of information. I will tell you, as well, the vast majority of my trailers are rage tail baits because of how effective they are. I don't care how many I go through. If it means I catch one more fish in a day, then it's worth it. The title, after all, calls the bait an alternative. It does not say a replacement for. Lik

  45. I would never make a statement saying there is no substitute for Rage Tail, because that is not true. These are all tools of the trade we need to assist us in catching fish. How you use them is up to you. There are many guys on this site that hand pour or use plastic injection systems that make craws. I've used them and they work just as well if not better than Rage Tail. So what makes Rage Tail so special, just because they are a sponsor and we have to promote them to our last dying breath. C'mon guys there is no one perfect plastic and many other brands catch a lot of fish as well. I would like to see what the response here would be if Netbait became a sponsor as well. What would would everyone say then? Would we have Rage Tail, Paca Chunk wars?????Just my persoanl opinion, if you want to delete this post go ahead. PS: With that kind of thinking since I own a Ranger than it's OK to make a general statement and say that there is no substitute for a Ranger boat? Senkosam, I like that you think outside the box and are trying new things and exposing everyone to new ideas. Job well done and I commend you on your ingenuity on posting other plastic baits as well in other threads on this site.

  46. I was always smaller than the other players, in H.S especially! I made the varsity as a sophomore and started every game. I was listed in the program at 5'8" 160lbs. I might have been 5'4" and 140 soaking wet! Don't get me wrong, I had been playing since I was 8 and knew how to play the game and was built like a tree trunk. You couldn't knock me off the ball but I could send you flying if I wanted to, correctly, not fouling. Most of the HS coaches were football coaches trying to make an extra buck, they were not knowledgable on how the game is played and I always got labled as a dirty player. The refs knew the game and I was never called for anything that they thought was a bad play. Nothing like knocking a guy off the ball sending him sprawling to the ground, getting the ball and sending your teammate down the field to score!!

  47. Its going up until Christmas. My wife said to hell with them. She's going and buying it tomorrow. He's gonna get it Christmas day. Its been awhile since I've seen her this mad about something. I'm just not cool with being told how to raise my son. I caused a small war when I took him coon hunting twice this past year, and squirrel hunting three times. I think she's the only one in that family with any sense aside from her granddaddy. I'm not depriving my son of something as simple as this. He LOVES hunting, fishing, and hiking. Or it may just be getting to spend time with me, while we are doing this. Either way. He is going to have an amazing Christmas, this year. He walked up to me in the store yesterday dragging one of the enormous pelican cases behind him. The dang case was twice his size, and had to weigh as much as he did. He told me, "here daddy, now I can have a case like yours to keep my rifle in." My heart almost burst with pride. Had to keep from laughing to seeing him dragging that giant thing behind him.

  49. Take a little bit of camping gear and spend the weekend at Marbin Farms Public Fishing Area. Also known as Charlie Elliot. It consists of 22 small ponds and lakes. Some of them are walk-in only. Three of the top ten bass caught in GA came from these lakes. Camping is primitive but free. You need a fishing license. You either need a three day fishing license or a year fishing license along with a WMA stamp. These are the lakes that I grew up fishing and there are some monsters in there. http://www.georgiawildlife.org/PFA/CharlieElliott There are many other places to fish in your area. Take a look through what is offered in this link and you should be able to find something close. http://www.georgiawildlife.org/fishing/opportunities

  50. Hey, I fish Lake Lanier in Gainesville Ga. I can tell you right now that they are shallow and you can use shakey head trick worms, weightless senkos, texas rigged worms, texas rigged imitation craws, topwater baits in the morning and evenings, and frogs. Bass are holding around cover such as weed beds, stumps, docks, laydown trees, brush, etc. There is a good bit of hydrilla in the lake right now growing up and this is where bass like to stage. The females are staging a little deeper around drop offs getting ready for the spawn. It looks like it will be raining when you come to Ga but don't let that stop you because they will still bite. The lake will probably be stained because of the rain but it doesn't mean you cant catch them. May have to use a brighter color and garlic scent attractant but that will take some experimenting. I caught a 4 lb bass about 12 feet from the shoreline on a black zoom frog around a weedbed and then went back a few days later and caught the same bass on a weightless senko in the same place. Good luck on your fishing trip here in GA. PS. Try and use natural colors if possible like green pumpkin or watermelon.
