  2. Caught both these fish in one night about an hour apart from each other. The big one was caught around 7 30pm off a silver and black husky jerk, he was in about 5 feet of water and i was fishing on the shore.Fish #2 was caught off a yellow and black top water original spook about 60 feet out in deep water with heavy veg. All these fish were caught in northern nj.

  3. We had a bragging rights tournament for the KC area guys on the forum yesterday on Melvern Lake, KS. It went great with lots of really quality smallmouth (for Kansas) caught. I fished with my wife and although she didn't catch a bunch of fish she did catch the biggest of the day in our boat She was fishing the smallest Luck E Strike squarebill that is a whopping 1.5 inches long and 1/8oz on 6lb test when this tank of a smallmouth hit it going the other direction. I thought maybe she'd snagged a carp by the tail until it jumped. She kept telling me to take the rod because she was going to lose it but I just talked her through it until it got close enough to get in the net. 18.5" and 3.96 pounds and second or third biggest anyone caught. I did my best but came up a little short of matching her fish. My biggest was this 18 1/4 incher that helped us to our second place finish.

  5. Talked to the guide I hired for Wednesday. He says the fish are up shallow in the creeks on wood and other structure. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs and texas rigged worms are the ticket this week.

  6. Funny that this topic comes up today. My friend caught this earlier this morning. It's not a crappie or bream, but just as astounding. This little guy was 7-8" tops. x3 on the roadrunners, although I personally prefer the Northland Whistler jigs. Same difference.

  7. Here's a few more. #9 Man shall not go directly to a spot shown by another man the day after being shown said spot. #10 On road trips, with the duration being more than 45 minutes, but less than two hours, the purchase of breakfast for the driver by the passenger shall be acceptable in lieu of gas money. In addition, under penalty of ridicule, no vehicle, regardless of value shall be exempt from gravel roads/muddy roads.

  8. Bass see a wider color spectrum then we see and can see these colors in very low light. Bass also have the ability to see fast moving objects in detailed slow motion instead of a blurred motion Forget the black and white vision, it's a myth. However black and white are both high contrasting colors that are often good lure choice. Tom

  9. Wanting to haul more that one Kayak at a time easily when I kayak fish with others I made updated my trailer to do the job. I took by existing harbor freight trailer, some 1 1/4" EMT, 4 two hole EMT hanger, screws and kayak carriers. I may shorten the pipes to pull the outside kayaks in a bit.

  10. The men of the square table have the job to deem what is manly, and what is not manly in common male situations. We here, need to decide what is manly and what is not manly in common bass fishing situations. (I know some of you have trouble with being told what to do, but this is a joke, don't get worked up.) #1 Man who takes another man fishing to a spot where neither man catches fish, shall provide his guest enough beer to forget that any such fishing trip ever occurred. #2 A bass that has been hooked, reeled in, lipped, and released is considered a CATCH. Follows, jump offs, long distance releases, and touches do not count and NOBODY CARES. #3 No man shall photograph any bass estimated to be under 14" (and subsequently post it on all your favorite fishing forums). Just tell us about it- we believe you. #4 At no time is it ever permissable to use the term "rubber worm". #5 When a non-fisherman asks if you're catching anything, you shall always reply, "Nah, this lake sucks. Nuthin' in here 'cept carp." #6 When the boat plug is forgotten, a digital picture of the infraction with the boat owner shall be posted on the internet to thwart off repeating offenders. #7 No fish shall be reported as a 5 pounder unless the scale is pulled down to at least 3 pounds. #8 One shall never ask another fisherman where he caught his fish. If asked where one caught said bass, it is always acceptable to reply "In the mouth" That's enough from me, who's got more?

  11. Three months ago I marked April 27 in my booking calander to fish with my good friend Mike from the You Tube channel, MikeyBalzz Fishing. I had fished with him on his boat up at Lake Okeechobee late last year and we wanted to get together and do a glades trip on my boat. I made a suggestion for an area that is typically going off for me this time of the year. We could not have had a better day. With both of our cameras rolling, we crushed em on the Spro frog all day. Here are a couple of the better ones I caught today and the bottom one is Mikes best fish from our Lake Okeechobee trip.

  15. Maybe I'm missing something but a revo premier I would think is already a quality reel. And where did the balancing come from? To the OP maybe you got a dud? I would think it should be smooth with no catches. Also how does the distance compare to other spinners you have?

  16. Nice fish guys! Glad to see everyone getting out. I got out yesterday and today. Slow day yesterday..only managed 2 LMB around 2lbs. One on the jig and the other on the jerkbait. Today I got out and caught 5 smallies in a few hours. All on the jig around wood in deeper water None under 2 lbs, and the biggest was this beautiful 3lber.

  20. I think that it is just the nature of top water frogs that you are going to miss most of your strikes. I most often use the Zoom Horny Toad hooks, but I know I've tried others whose names escape me right now. I feel like if I am batting 300 on top water frog hits, that is a great day. This winter while digging through tackle, I found an old pad lure - a Heddon Moss Boss - basically a top water plastic spoon. I think when it gets to be frogging season, that is the lure I'll start with this year.

  21. It depends on the type of tournament that I'm fishing. In an open jackpot type tournament, I'm going for broke. In a trail tournament where I'm competing for points throughout the entire season, I tend to go for a limit first. At the end of the year, an angler who consistently weighed in a solid bag will be higher in the standings than the guy who finishes near the top in some tournaments and the bottom in others.

  22. I just started using baitcasters for bass fishing. I mainly use em for heavy cover, rattle traps, jigs and blade baits. I am not new to baitcaster as I have used them for a while in saltwater but I recommended 12-15lb berkley big game for most applications. It's a bit stiffer then other monos but it's tough as nails us its cheap. Backlashes will occur at times just be careful picking them out to avoid weakening the line. I respool every 2-4 weeks because I fish every day

  23. From all the reels I currently own to the ones I've had in the past here is how I look at it. The reels I have that are in the $120-$150 range are what I call work horse reels, these have some good features and perform very well day in and day out, if you are hard on equipment that is the best bet to buy, the downside is they aren't buttery smooth as the high end reels and while you will get great casting distance out of these reels they will fall short of their hier end siblings. The $180 -$220 reels are the gold standard, these reels have features that won't take a beating but they are still solid and will take a little abuse, but the performance you will get is noticable on first cast. These reels are smoother, cast with less effort and make even high pressure fishing a little more enjoyable, guys that buy these reels have a hard time going even slightly less expensive. Reels in the $250 - $300 are on a different level, these reels will be extremely smooth, braking systems when dialed in will make it close to impossible to backlash and the bearings will be of a very high grade. These reels will have tight tolerances and are precision instruments that don't take too much abuse but at thise level you are more likely not to throw it on the deck 15 times a day either, most who can afford these never go back unless they are forced to by finacial situations. Finally we get to the 300++ reels, these are the platinum reels and just picking one up you feel the difference, they feel like they are sculped and fishing with these make everything easy as the smoothness of retrieve and ease of casting is on a level not many ever experience. I left room in the numbers as there are some that fall between the price ranges but it is what my experience has been over 30 years of buying and using tackle. I know ther are multiple reels built by one company but they are built to the companies specs, not their own and I have found that in fishing products more than any other type of product, you do get what you pay for 99% of the time. Are their cheap reels that go beyond their price point? Yep the same for rods but these are the exceptions and not the rule so choose the best you can afford and you'll have a good set up.

  26. I've looked at them a couple of times. I don't have a rod capable of handling the things though, and no budget for another combo. If you guys start killing them on 10XD's I will have to sell a kidney and buy one.

  27. Perhaps with screws, nuts, and clips. The engine, suspension, and transmission - you know.... all the important parts - are not. The Cadillac is put together using much more quality components than a Cobalt, and same applies for reels. The gears, bearings, and materials are very different. Low end baitcasters will have plastic gears, a graphite/plastic frame, and poor bearings. Pick up a low end and high end baitcaster and you will feel the difference.

  28. I keep it simple, jigs/plastics = browns/greens in clear water, some form of purple and/or black in stained water. Hard baits = translucent or natural colors in clear water, brighter colors with lots of chart., blue, or orange in them in stained.

  30. First baitcaster, stick with mono until you get comfortable. You will backlash, no point in wasting money on other lines until you get more comfortable.

  32. Had the best day out this year and was out fished by size and by number of fish caught. Who out fished me but none other then my son Noah. He managed to catch around 30 bluegill and 1 crappie in about 1.5 hrs. He picked the spot also the first spot I picked and we didn't even get a bite ad he kept begging he wanted to go across by the falls. So I took him over by the falls and first cast he got a nice sized blue gill then another and another almost every cast and the first 10 or so were good sized so we put em in a bucket and I fried them up tonight thought he only ate 1 small piece before passing out but it was almost 2 hours past his bed time by the time I cleaned them and got everything in order to make them. I managed maybe 5 blue gill all dinks not even worth keeping and even he let me know it. He did want to keep one for his baby brother he said since it was a baby fish lol. The crappy was his first ever I was so excited for him and it was a good sized crappie probably 15" I was so proud of him. He got it all by him self I bait the hook but he did all the rest. The whole time he kept saying how blue gill are the best fish ever and how proud he was lol he had a blast as did I. I usually don't fish when we go but he's got a good grasp on the concept I just let him fish but then he kept telling me to put a bobber on and catch some fish so that's what I did well tried.

  33. Ended up fishing on the Patriot on a 6 hour salmon trip. Only one was caught out of 12 anglers. I never touched my rod all day as the deck hands rigged them on the down riggers and mine never went off. Did stop by TW. Small retail shop but friendly staff. Best part of the trip was the Tri Tip sandwiches and the farmers market!! Pretty town and nice people too!

  34. No one in particular, I tend to like guys whom I have either met in person, or who are funny and personable on TV. Swindle, Hackney, Ike, KVD, Scroggins, Shaw Grigsby, are amongst the guys I am always pulling for. Brian Snowden doesn't get much TV time, but he's a super nice guy. He and I have a mutual friend and I have bought some of Brian's used gear in the offseason. A bunch of pro's were at BPS in Auburn last summer, and I went out to do the whole meet and greet thing with them. Brian was there and he and I talked for a long time. He asked me as many questions as I asked him, and made a genuine offer that if he has time between tournaments and on his way up to fish the St. Lawrence Elite event this summer, that he'd like to swing by my way and fish with me for an afternoon. Semi-chuckle worthy story of that meet and greet, standing in line like everyone else for a handshake/picture and a couple questions with KVD, people in front of me were asking the usual stuff, like...what's you favorite lake, favorite color crank bait, how do fish this or that. When I got up there, I said "hey you spend a lot of time on the water, what kind of sunscreen do you use to keep from turning as red as your shirt" He actually laughed, and said no one has ever asked him that before............but he never did tell me what kind of sunscreen he used LOL.
