  1. I am a little different, I use a 7'mh that is a cut down trolling rod, its a little faster action than your average crankbait rod but not by much, my reasoning for this is the strikes are violent, its one of the few techniques I use braid with and I want something to give on the strike. For line I use 30-50lb Power Pro braid, the only reason I use braid is so I can snap the jig through weeds cleanly, this draws strikes and insures my jig stays weed free even through the heaviest cover. As far as where I fish them I am generally fishing them shallow through the sparse to heavy weed cover, I generally look for isolated stands of coontail or pads and swim and pop my jig directly through them, occasionally letting it fall after I rip it out of the weeds. Swim jigs can also be an excellent choice for deep weedline work, slow rolling them along the edges of deep weedlines in the summer can be deadly. For shallow work I go with a 1/4-5/16 oz original for the deeper stuff it is a flip and swim in 1/2 and above. As far as hooksets go (for the light wire) I generally reel down on the fish, feel its weight and just sweep the rod back, the fish generally hook themselves and you don't need a huge hookset, it is a light wire hook and you risk the chance on blowing it out during the hookset. For the flip and swims, swing away it is a heavy hook, it can take the abuse...lol As far as jigs, I obviously am biased but we took along time developing our swim jigs getting the look and feel right before bringing them out, the original swim jig swims true is hand built, tough as nails and is everything I wanted in a swim jig. The Flip and Swim is a heavy hook model that can pull double duty as a flipping jig and is still a great option for swimming around real heavy cover and out deep since it is available to 1oz. That being said there is alot of very good swim jig makers out there, Brovarney and lethal weapon are the original cheesehead style jig makers, Seibert and others build good heavy hook models. i generally shy away from mass produced brands on just about everything and don't have a comment on any of the "big" companies stuff. As far as trailers go, I generally use a Paca Chunk in the summer, in the spring I use a single tail grub, mainly action plastics 4 or 5 inch mag grub, they have the perfect tail for not wrapping around the hook and fouling, and I also use swim bait type trailers like a cut down Berkely grass pig, 4" LFT live magic shad (thanks RW) or other hollow body offerings.

  2. Both were good games. I mean if it wasn't for a turnover on the 1 and a missed field goal that Akers usually makes that game would have not been nearly as close. I am really looking forward to the Super Bowl. Two,good defenses and more smash mouth style offenses.....like the old days of the NFC east.

  4. Look at the replay, Pollard was aimed and attempting the tackle, heading straight to Ridley's chest, then Ridley lowered his head and shoulder into him and knocked his own self out, did a split and kneed the ball loose LOL Complain about hard hits coming from a team with Rodney Harrison as their enforcer for years. Wasn't he voted dirtiest player EVER???? man u patriots fans cry worse than your coach when you all lose. Throw Wes to the wolves, but not that god of a man u call Brady no, he didn't suck when it counted. LOL

  5. Well, I'm on the other end of this debate - I want the vendor to see my ID. In fact, I do not sign my cards with my name - I write "See ID" in that space on the cards. If my cards some how end up in the wrong hands, Joe Shmoe might get my ID as well, but what are the chances he's a handsome as me . . . . A-Jay

  7. The most commen mistakes I see people making all the time are: #1 shaking the bait TOO much #2 not using the proper sized weight to get it to, and keep it (the sinker), on the bottom. #3 fishing it too fast #4 using it dirty water WHEN they are not right on top of fish #5 putting self imposed limitations on the technique.........I know guys who think it's only a deep water smallmouth tool, or that it's only good for dinks, or you can only fish small baits on light line with it, that you can only use spinning tackle with it, and etc.......

  10. Ok - I just finished watching this latest Extended Cast broadcast. I did enjoy it. But now that all the competitors have fished and the first round of eliminations to chop down the field of 24 has been completed, here's a few thoughts . . . . . I've had enough of the dock fishing dink fest. I hope that at least one of these holes is dock-less and will require the anglers to look for and find fish that are not all drawn to obvious man made shore line cover. Maybe fire up that side imaging or the down scan and even put the Hydro wave to work. I was looking forward to seeing someone use their electronics to find fish and put together a couple of different patterns. Those of us who fish northern lakes know so many are often void of docks or have very few, so you have to come up with something else; especially if you want something other than a 15 ounce bass. I do realize that because of the format and the brief period that the anglers have to actually find/catch bass, they'll go with whatever is available, and a show where no one catches wouldn't work but these guys have skills - so lets see them . . . . 12. Why question his success? (Well, I question the Dancin' Eel. LOL) I posted this pic here a couple years ago. This is Bill and my handicapped brother who has been deceased for 10 years. In the early 90's, my father had won a fishing trip with Bill Dance. He and Bill arranged to make special accomodations for my brother to tag along.A once in a lifetime trip for my bro. It says alot about the man.

  16. Those are the only hooks I use and I've never had an issue with them. Aaron Martens takes the same hooks and bends them out just slightly and says he has better hook ups than he's ever had. Maybe try that.

  17. He's already been there, done that. The tournament trail is a real grind with no guaranteed paychecks. He's making plenty of money on his shows and I'm sure the schedule is a lot easier on him than fishing tournies would be. Besides, if he stopped filming shows, we wouldn't have his awesome blooper tapes to watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AeLUSxGf8M

  21. 1) Power Shotting - Heavier line (10lb+ FC, 4/0 EWG Hook, 1/2 oz weight) Use it like a carolina rig. All the things about not moving the bait too much still applies. I T-Rig a senko on this and can cover a decent amount of water with it. I also can chuck it into grass and it is surprisingly weedless. Also works with 6 pound test and a 1/0 hook. Never thought of going heavier on the line and weight so will give it a shot. Thanks for a great post!

  22. What you see is and was directly under the boat, unless you use the display in the circular, flasher mode. As the image scrolls across the display everything but the latest vertical line of pixels is a recorded history of the bottom you passed over. To be more precise it shows what was under the transducer. To keep it simple. As soon as you see a bottom feature that interests you, throw a marker buoy over the side. That marker buoy will not land on that piece of bottom. Depending on boat speed it will be beyond that patch of bottom you saw. So, when you drop the buoy, make a 180 degree turn. As you pass the marker buoy, you should see that patch of bottom appear on the display. Drop another buoy when you see it. That patch of bottom will be between the two buoys. If your unit has a mapping feature, you may be able to "mark" that spot. It will work the same way as the marker buoys. I like to use marker buoys because they provide clearly visible points of reference. I use them to mark contour lines, and edges of vegetation. While it's possible to do it with some electronics, I prefer the buoys in most situations.

  25. Don't underestimate the power of the drop shot <<Yoda voice>> I have experimented with various ways (on shore and boat) and found it to be an exceptional tool. Some out of the box ideas to consider ... 2) Experiment with the way you put the bait on the hook. Nose hooking and wacky are commonplace. Don't forget to try threading it on, t-rig, etc. Each has it's pros/cons 3) Try all Fluoro vs. Briad with a Fluoro leader. One will work for you in terms of sensitivity. Stick with the one which gives you better feel for the weight and for those sometimes subtle strikes. 4) Swimming a bait ... nose hook something like a Zoom Swimming super fluke Jr. and using the power shotting technique do a large drag and pause technique. Gives the swimming fluke a swim and pause presentation which rocks. Hope this helps

  26. Answer me this then, out of all those trips to the red zone, how many of those trips turned into points? Are you really going to pick those two plays and single those out for game changers? I agree with you in the fact that those did have an impact on the game, but it's not what cost you the game.

  28. On erie I use a net then a boga to unhook multiple treble jerk baits. I have never seen any damage attributable to the use of a boga grip in salt water or fresh water. When fishing for toothy critters the boga can be very helpful for most fisher people.

  29. You mean like when Lgmouthgam fondled an in-store Lews and then proceeded to write a 5 paragraph "review" of the reel and how it couldn't be better than his Shimano? Oddly enough I didn't see the Posse slap him around for that buffoonery.

  31. Just have to tip your cap and wish the Ravens luck Quillback, they play a great game! Same with the Niners, they could have mailed it in when they got down by 17, but they hung in there and played flawless in the second half.

  32. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I'm recording it and watching it later, If they're fishing docks again next episode I'll probably be doing a lot of fast forwarding. I'm hoping in the future they fish lakes where guys are using a lot of different techniques. Like they did last year.

  33. Only a few more months!! I went to fish off the shore at Leesylvania yesterday (not expecting to catch anything.... and didn't). It was a great day just to get out, cast some lures, and test new equipment. I just wish I could have taken my boat out. I really need a heated garage so I don't have to worry about winterizing my boat. This way I can go out on warmer days. Anyways I'm getting sidetracked. Can't wait for the spawn.

  34. I pretty PO'd at the Patsies right now. Thanks Wes for dropping a pass that was right in your chest, didn't you do that last year in the Super Bowl also? Bill Buckner has now been replaced by Wes Welker as the Boston choker. At least Buckner only choked once. Thanks Aaron Hernandez for staying in bounds as time was running out in the 1st half, coulda just stepped out of bounds and stopped the clock, but for some inexplicable reason you turned into the middle and got tackled inbounds. The Patsies played like boneheads, the Ravens played smart. Congrats to the Ravens for being the smarter team.

  35. Never say NEVER, man I am glad the Ravens won, Brady could have run for two or three first downs at the end and possibly made it interesting, but he was to chicken with Lewis there and caused "Belly Ache" to cry! LOVE IT

  36. Hats off to the Ravens and the 49ers for playing some of the best football in recent times I have ever seen. Both games started slow for both champions, both champions never gave in and made the right adjustments while on the road and deserved the right to be called division champions. For the first time we will see brothers as head coaches square off for the right to be called a superbowl champion....something tells me it won't be the last. Good luck to the brothers and we cant wait to see what you have planned for the Superbowl......at least neither will have to endure the halftime show.

  37. Moving the bait too much and too fast. You're imitating a small prey item and trying to make it look natural. Most small creatures don't make lots of big movements. Fish it slow and thorough.

  39. Yeah, Ed has been just as important as Ray for several years now. He is incomparable as far as free safetys go. Hes a little older but Kapernick still needs to know where he is otherwise Ed is gonna be dancing in the Superdome. Ed and Haloti Ngata get forgotten about so often but those two men make that defense what it has been. It all start up front with Ngata and in the back end with Reed. Im glad to see those guys finally get there. Theres alot of unheralded guys on the Ravens team. Yea, i like a ravens fan, i do pull for them when im not pulling for my panthers.

  42. All the major companies injectors and molds use a 5/8 hole and can be interchanged, with the exception of Jacobs. Some 2 piece hand pour molds can be injected and some wont shoot properly without vents. My Senko mold would not work.

  43. Dobyns Savvy 703 or 704 depending on your intended techniques. If you want a general purpose rod, go with the 704, the 703 is a little soft for jigs etc. as far as a reel, Lews Tournament in your choice of retrieve speed. You will have a nice, well balanced rig with enough money left for line and perhaps a lure or 2.

  44. Unwritten rule, if you touch the leader it's a catch. What you see on TV is not reality, those fishermen are experts in handling some of those larger fish. It is also frowned upon by certain state's governing bodies to remove an fish from the water, even for a photo op, tarpon quickly comes to mind, not that people don't do it. I can understand someone thinking not putting the fish in the boat is cop out, bear in mind they are not flipping 5# fish, the small ones are just hoisted in just like what you would do with a bass. I'm sure you don't lip a pike or muskie, cudas and kingfish are pretty mean hombres, a lot of guys are walking around with scars on their legs from those guys, they'll go after you even after being gaffed. A pretty large majority of saltwater fishermen take home their catch for the dinner table, many of those fish are gaffed or netted, unless already limited out, not in season or under sized. Don't think it's unusual while fishing for a some species, a 7' shark hits you instead, happens all the time, unless one is real expert best course of action is to cut the line once you get it alongside (if you do, lol). I caught this 7 footer last year, care to pull into the boat? http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/gallery/album/273-reef-shark/

  45. Yes it does lol if you look it has a sticker that says redman classic on it. My dad won the redman classic out of that boat in 1993 plus he put the boat together when it came in cause he worked at a ranger dealer. So yes you could say it has sentimental value lol

  48. Question, would you turn a 16 year old loose on a 30 thousand dollar car. Of course you wouldn't. There are some growing pains that go with with boating just as there are with cars. Not just with safe operation of the boat, but the maintenance, upkeep, and small mechanical problems that will pop up if not closely watched for. And also the handling them boat in shallow or very rough water. Not to mention your comfort level of backing and handling a 20+ foot trailer. I understand that you may have a lifetime of boating experience on large boats. But since you did not mention it, I'm assuming that you do not. My suggestion, buy a boat. However, do not break the bank. You should be able to find a used boat for less than half of 30k. I would suggest a 16 -17 foot boat with a a smaller motor. An aluminum boat would be good. Use it for a season or so and if you still want a nice bass boat then sell it,and go get one. I say this because alot of people get goo goo eyes and after a few months they lose intrest. Remember you can save alot of money by looking thoroughly and buying used. Then you can use more money for gear!
