  1. Watermelon baits I've seen are translucent and I most often swim them in clear water on sunny days. Green Pumpkin baits are opaque and I fish them most often in cloudier water and/or on overcast days and I'll usually choose an opaque color when I intend to drag the bait on the bottom. I have no idea whether the bass care, but this mindset gives me parameters when choosing baits to buy and/or fish. oe

  2. Well today was certainly not a numbers day but after catching lots of fish last week Chris and I decided to hit to La Cygne again today. We had rain off an on for the first half of the day and then pretty steady rain the second half of the day, at least the temps were in the 40's most of the day and wind wasn't terrible. The plant was not generating when we got there. No generation equals no action on power plant lakes. It took us almost 3 hours to get a bite and the first half dozen were serious dinks, only one would have even topped a pound. We came around the point and noticed the visibility had dropped to a couple hundred yards so we knew they'd started generating and the warm water running into the lake was creating steam so we figured we'd get to the outlet again because those fish react first. Not much going on other than one dink and one missed bite. I was fishing a Series 5 on a sand/gravel ledge where the current runs along when my bait got crushed. I wasn't sure it was a bass at first until she came up and wallowed. She was hooked good until she wallowed next to the boat again and the front hook popped out. She pulled like crazy and I thought for sure she'd come off but Chris finally got the net under her. I was shaking so bad I couldn't hardly get her on the scale. 24" long and 15" around and 7.51 pounds. We probably didn't catch another half dozen the rest of the day and it was raining pretty hard and starting to get dark so we headed to the ramp but decided to fish around the ramp for a minute before we left. I was fishing a Bandit 100 in mistake color off a rock pier when it got stopped. We both thought it was around 3 pounds when it first came up and wallowed around. Once it got to the boat and dove down it was obvious we'd underestimated her. She was barely hooked on the back hook but she stayed stuck and we got her in the net. Not quite as big as the first but at 21.5" and 13.25" and 5.88 pounds she was certainly a great way to end the day!

  3. http://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/msn/dc_mayor_wants_the_redskins_name_change_discussed/12617422 people really are too sensative. While they are at it the Reds should have to change their mascot because it is offensive to people with big heads. I don't hear any native americans complaining, it is random people with nothing better to do, just like the up roar about the braves batting practice caps. Everything gets blown out of proportion these days, jeeze.

  4. I've been passing the down time this winter upgrading and supertuning a few of my reels, doing some decorative butt wraps on my favorite rods and I even dabbled with rod building (just finished my third). All this to avoid going ape sh!+ with FWS (fishing withdrawl syndrom) that normally has me tying a piece of yarn to the end of my line and casting for felines in the family room. I decided to do something about avoiding it, or at the very least postponing it a little. I got together with a couple of buddies and we're heading south to a lake with open water tomorrow. WOO HOO!!! I heard that Lake Geneva has open water access and that got me to thinking about a few lakes south of here that aren't closed to fishing. We decided on Shabona in DeKalb county here in Illinois and while they will be looking to catch some tablefare in the form of crappie and perch, your's truly will be christening one of my new rod builds and a suspending Fat Free Fingerling and Smithwick Rouge. Don't plan on catching anything with the posibility of a cold as it's going to be damp and windy, but who cares? Not me!

  8. Your a funny guy !!! Thank you for your support in this matter I am part Cheerokee and I too am not offended by this name they have been given, although I see the conflict with the elephant issue, I wonder if that means the republicans will have to change their symbol as well, we will keep the other for the rest of the government cause they are all a bunch of jackass's any way !!!

  10. Im part blackfoot and I approve of this nickname. I had a discussion with Aubie and Big Al the other day. We three decided that the Aubie is offensive to tigers everywhere, and that 9 out of 10 elephants are offended by the way Big Al is portraying them. As a representative for these poor animals we are filing suit for name changes. We are thinking the University of Alabama Greys and The University of Auburn Light Greys. Hopefully old people wont be offended by the words grey. As for the link to the story and its comment section. I like the name The White Devils. Im curious how the mascot would look. If they were playing in a snow storm would it disappear? What would the uniforms look like? If they were all white too and it snowed would they also vanish?

  16. Watermelon black flake in clear water, green pumpkin black flake everywhere else. That means green pumpkin more often than not. I've tried various flakes versus black and many different basic colors and saw no difference in catch rates. The only thing I got was more confused and much poorer. So I just try to KEEP IT SIMPLE. You can drive yourself crazy with 20 different colors for every plastic bait you might use.

  19. Watermelon/red flake Green pumkin/black flake Pumpkin/black flake Let me also suggest you purchase a booklet from your DOW. Match the hatch to thei lizards and salamanders in the area you're fishing. Sometimes you'll find a color you normally wouldn't use.

  20. Abu Garcia or Pflueger are the way to go. especially for a great reel in the 50-60 dollar range, can't beat the President.

  21. great advice. i wouldn't mind agreeing on a final price up front. "can we agree on a price now? if it passes inspection and a test drive on the lake will you take $5,xxx? whats ur bottom line?". it lets him know ur serious buyer and he's got to back his words via a mechanic that it's a good boat. the transaction is less stressful and you can negotiate any repairs the mechanic might recommend from that starting point.

  22. I have an about 5 year old Abu garcia cardinal that still works perfectly and trust me I beat that reel up. It has survived rain, mud, drops and caught hundreds of fish. For the price it is a great reel line up. Also I am a big fan of the pflueger presidents. I have been putting more money into bait casting setups lately so i havent picked up a higher end spinning reel but I do use my friends from time to time.

  30. I would meet him at a reputable boat shop of your choice and have them check it out for you. You will probably have to pay for it and if he has a problem taking it to a reputable shop, don't buy it. The money spent will probably be worth it the long run, especially if the boat is several years old.

  37. I myself am also a fan of using matching equipment. The set of core rods and reels that I fish the most by far are all the same brand and model reel with the same brand technique specific rods. Sure I have other reels and rods that I sometimes fish along side these five setups but for the vast majority of my fishing I really enjoy the continuity of my Citica E and Powell Max combos.

  39. I hope the activists from PETA didn't view this program !! I could hear them sitting around the table drinking blueberry spinach iced latte's..... " Thats so foul and discusting....forcing those poor defenseless fishies to be thrust in the crotches of those big ugly nasty screaming fisherman. Lets start a lawsuit right now. Aren't bass protected under the US Consitution ? There must be an ammendment that covers crotch pollution for wildlife. And those noisy lines....what is it called.. braid ? It hurts my ears to hear that high frequency whine as thry reeled in those poor fish. I'll bet that line damages the cross members of those docks they kidnapped those fishies from. " Sorry, too much Kopi Luwak.

  40. Used to use Bombers back in the day, then switched to a few KVDs. Recently caught a big sale at DSG, and picked up a huge assortment of Bomber Square As, and Shallow As. I personally think that the Bombers outperform the KVDs.

  41. Nothing better than a pump shotgun for home defense. And while your at it, get some #7 1/2 target loads. If you have ever patterned a shotgun, even at 25 yrds with a cylinder choke, bird shot will only spread to about a basketball size. That is plenty of damage and won't go through walls. Jeff

  45. It seems like we had a similiar thread last year about this time that turned into a multi-page slugfest of baitcaster vs. spinning. If I remember correctly, I even tried to use "science." In the end, myself as well as several others ended up looking rather foolish, and we came up with this: 1) there are advantages to both 2) it's largely a matter of personal preference. I think any fisherman limits himself to some extent if he only fishes one or the other, but by no means does using both techniques make you a better fisherman than the guy who only uses one. If you think you might like to try baitcasting, find a willing (and patient) buddy to help you out using one of his. At the end of the day, pay him for all the line you ruined in birdsnests, and decide if you like it enough to give it a try.

  46. I watched it on the Outdoor Channel yesterday during the day, and it will be on again tomorrow evening. I like the new fish handling rules. Two minute penalty if the fish touches the carpet of the boat, and two minutes if the fish is thrown back into the water from above the gunnel. Good to see them promoting healthy release techniques.

  49. Yes they are! It amazes me that such a foul natured, stinky, slimy, ugly creature could taste so good. You have to know how to fillet them, though. I use the "5 steak" method, One back strap, two sides, and two tail fillets. Just cut around the Y-bones, and get this:
