  2. Normally in my experience it doesn't matter that much but I was in a tournament a couple of months ago and I was throwing a black shore minnow spook and my pardoner was throwing a bone spook. They where absolutely killing mine and weren't even giving the bone colored one a sniff. He didn't have a black one and I dug through my box and found another black in a different size. He put it on a started catching fish. Moral of the story......it usually doesn't matter but on occasion it does.

  3. For a modest amount of money you can get an electric scale that will accurately measure to the gram. For some more money, you can get one that measures down to the tenth of a gram. (that level of accuracy seems like overkill to me) Anyway, several years ago, I had the same question, i.e., How much does this bait or that bait weigh? Spend the money, get the scale, then you'll know. As an additional bonus, should you ever spill a box of assorted weights, it makes sorting them out again go much faster. An extra additional bonus, should you ever decide to participate in the recreational chemical industry, an accurate scale is a necessary tool.

  4. Over the summer, I ordered a Hawgtech Hawg Handler to try out. I paid retail, $79 if I recall. I really didn't set my expectations too high, but I had already seen several positive reviews. My skepticism came from dealing with handles made by Bassart, ZPI, and other JDM sources. I got my Hawgtech Hawg Handler, and my initial impressions were, man this handle is big. I immediately had an application for it. I fish for salmon and trout in the fall with spoons and bass tackle. It's a blast, but they can really put the screws to your gear. This year, I was going to step it up to something that I could put some pressure on them with. I picked my Dobyns Champion Extreme 745 saddled with a Chronarch 200e7 spooled with 50# Power Pro. This worked well, but once I swapped the stock handle out with the Hawgtech, man that was powerful. I really expected some flex, but I feel it made the system stronger. I set the drag pretty high, pushing 5 power rod to it's limit, and was horsing big fish in, literally able to winch them with the longer, stronger handle. Toss in some super smooth, comfortable, oversize bearing supported cork knobs, and well you get the picture. Any application where you need power - deep cranking, punching, Carolina rigging - this is a valuable upgrade that isn't just "bling." In fact, that it looks so good is just a bonus. Again, I have been literally abusing my setup and after dozens of fish in 15-25 lb. range, I see no signs of wear or failure. I've beat up some stamped steel handles, from some "pretty popular brand names" here, but this one is holding strong. If you are looking for a functional, relatively value priced, good looking upgrade for your reel - I highly recommend a look at Hawgtech. https://www.hawgtech.com Some "Hawgs"

  5. At one certain spot, they must've been having their own little "Bass Super Bowl", because the first two I caught there were this BLIMP and this Perfect FOOTBALL... Several others followed suit and made this stop memorable for sure! It's amazing how fast the fish can change from long and lean, to all CHUBBED up in just a few weeks after the first cold snap! Caught'em dragging 1oz jigs with Rage Lobster trailers. When the Fall weather in Tx turns cold and Windy... It's time to gear up and put the pads on because the Bruisers won't necessarily play fair with you The BITE and the FIGHT are serious because they're feeding up and adding as much weight as possible for Winter So IMO, if you want a Big Ole Pig... this is a GREAT time to Get'r'dun

  11. nitro freak to answer a few of your observations, of course each lake or stream has a different set of circumstances. some sections of a lake can withstand the withdrawl of bass without replacement. this would be because those areas have great spawning years every year. in the case of the upper reaches of table rock, spawning success does not happen because of the continual release of cold water from beaver lake to keep trout alive that they stock in the white river below beaver dam. in the eagle rock area of table rock, and as far down as big m, the water during spawning season can fluctuate in one day from the low to mid 60's, and in a matter of hours be as cold as 50 degrees. if bass had laid eggs while it was warm enough, that 50 degree water hitting them kilss everyone. hence, the upper end of table rock can not sustain the continual taking of bass without them being returned. in the old days, bass catching was about equal over the entire lake. in fact the upper portions of table rock might have even been the best. once beaver lake was put in and they started stocking trout, the bass population has been on a continual decline on the upper end of table rock. the exceptional high water we had for a few years seemed to help spawn a little. it allowed bass to get far enough away from the cold water release to have some success at spawning. in any case, tournament anglers taking bass from the upper end of table rock continually and they are hauled 40 to 50 miles to be weighed in, and released right at the weigh-in site never make it back to the upper end. they are just gone for good. bo

  13. Sweet and Sour Pork Chops tonight, with grilled corn on the cob and wild rice !! 4 large thick pork chops "Bone In" cooked the way you like them, grilled, broiled, oven baked. 4 ears of sweet yellow corn on the cob still in the shuck, grill them as you grill the chops. Cook the wild rice while your chops are cooking. Sweet and Sour Sauce, 1/2 cup of firmly packed brown sugar, I prefer light brown sugar, you can use dark but it will give it a really sweet taste and you won't get the eveness of sweet and sour. 2 Tablespoons of Corn Starch 1 large can of pineapple, chunks or crushed 1/4 cup of white vinegar, or 1/16 of a cup if you don't want it to have a bite to it. 1/2 of a finely chopped Red Bell Pepper Mix the brown sugar and starch together until the brown sugar no longer clumps and it looks like a powdered sugar mix, if the mix does not smooth out, add or keep adding a touch more corn starch until it does, just be really careful not to add too much starch, add in the vinegar and the pineapple and mix thuroghly, if there is not much pineapple juice in the can you can add a little of your favorite juice, apple or orange juice, the mixture should look nice and wet but it needs to be somewhat thick. If you like your peppers to have a charred taste to them you can pre-grill them first, it adds an excellent flavor to the sauce, otherwise just add the red pepper to the mix and stir again. Turn the burner on medium high and stir continuously until mixture starts to thicken nicely, remove from heat, try to avoid making it boil, it tends to give the sauce a burnt taste and it really makes a mess too. You can either use the sauce to make sweet and sour rice, or you can use it for the chops, or both, one of my families favorite dishes.

  15. That's an impressive report. What bothers me the most is post-release mortality. We were at Kentucky Lake a couple of years ago on a BassResource Roadtrip. A major tournament was going on at the same time (FLW?). The weather was brutal, but cold not hot. On the first or second day some of us were at the ramp in a small bay where fish had been release the previous day. I have never seen so many big, dead bass. It was TOTALLY disgusting. With today's technology, immediate release is a possibility. Big O has some very specific thoughts on the logistics. There would be costs involved, but the main argument has revolved around destroying the dynamics at weigh-in. The answer in a nutshell is to put on a show like you would see at a rock concert, huge screens and action packed video. The point is, huge fish get that way because they find the perfect environment in which to grow. Releasing bass immediately back to their "neighborhood" would be a huge step forward. Good for the fish and good for the future of tournament fishing.

  17. Yes, the Gen2 got the dual brakes, and the very strong and smooth drag system. Not sure if the Gen1's had the "infini" spool (sp?) where the spool shaft is 2 piece. Anyway, the Gen2 is great, great reel. Probably the very best AG low profile reel ever produced. The Gen3's went away from what made the Gen2's so great, the dual brakes. They now use the IVCB brakes. I have those in my MGX and they are not as good/versatile as the dual brakes. They have just not been as well received on the forums. I've still yet to read a non-sponsored persons review of a G3 Premier. Very odd, that. Fortunately, the dual brakes are still available in the G3 STX, and it is actually lighter than the G2 Premier. And much cheaper. But mine is not quite as smooth at times as the G2 Premier. Nothing horrible, just a little gear noise when retrieving a lure quickly, something none of my 4 G2 Premiers have.

  23. Jon and I went to my favorite lake in the whole world today. That's right, we went to Hillsdale. It treated us surprisingly well. We were hoping for a keeper 'eye but of course we didn't catch any of those, walleye is pretty much the only thing I didn't catch. We got out there around 1 and fished until 3:30 and spent most of our time right by the Gardner Rd bridge with jigging spoons. We had probably 15 whites, 5 or 6 crappie, 5 drum, 2 bluegill, 1 catfish, and 1 walleye plus several huge shad that got snagged on our spoons. Nothing big enough to take pictures of but most of the whites were nice sized ones and they were slamming the spoons. I actually caught one that had mud in his mouth and coming out his gills. Best we could tell was he attacked my spoon right as it hit bottom and got a mouthful of mud along with my spoon. Jon caught the only walleye but it was only about 8". We fished silver and white spoons, color didn't seem to matter. Water temps were 43-42

  25. I use the VMC spinshot hooks (love them) and I reel into the fish and lift the rod, no setting. Caught 4 pounders doing this. this is also Glenn's "method" of drop shot hook setting.

  26. What I'll do in most cases is simply reel down, lowering the tip of my rod while reeling and gently lift or sweep my rod. Thin wire hooks penetrate more easily and run the risk of ripping through if you hook like trying to set a dull nail through the mouth.

  29. All my spinning rods are either GLX or NRX. The sensitivity of all of them is excellent, and the SYR is no exception. Because it is a bit stiffer tipped, I think it is a bit more sensitive than the DSR for feeling more aggressive taps/hits. But it may loose a few fish because they might detect that resistance more so than the DSR. Many of my dropshot fish never bang the lure, they're just there when I pick up the line a bit. I think that's were the DSR may produce a few more fish, but looses out on the sensitivity a bit to do it. I have a Certate on the SYR and a Stella on the DSR. I'm not into figuring out where the balance spot is on a combo, so I can't really say on that part of it. Both of those reels are relatively heavy, at least compared to most of my baitcasters, but they seem to work well with those rods.

  37. Yep, we want to take the guys who fish from shore in a bass boat so they can enjoy the experience. Hopefully we will have more boaters in 2013. If not, then we need to consider taking guys out for two hours at a time. In an eight hour day each boater can take four fellow fishermen in their boats. Just food for thought.
