  4. After reading the rest of the posts another thought comes to mind... When I'm driving the boat, if my backseater is somehow left too close to shore, or left dangling out in deeper, unproductive water, I would expect him to speak up. Sometimes I get so into my own pattern that I forget about the other guy. I'm a naturally considerate person and if I'm making the day miserable for another guy, I want to hear about it! Even if that means both of us on the front deck, I'll make the necessary adjustments without a second thought. This goes for pattern issues too. If I'm struggling and you think you know where they are, speak up. Unless you want to go out into 70 ft of water and bobber fish, I'll probably change in a heartbeat.

  5. Say you had a store bought Medium Power, Fast Action Rod that measured 7' in length and you removed the handle and the reel seat, cut about 3 inches off the butt section of the blank and reassemble the reel seat and cork handle (maintaining the same rear handle length as before). What would that do overall to the action and power of the rod? I assume it would tend to make it a Mod.-Fast Action rod now, but would it do much to the power?

  6. Here is a preview of a rod I am building. Got a little tiger wrap going. Couple more coats of epoxy and it will be finished. Your thoughts on this thread work?

  12. I think it would do virtually nothing to the action or the power. But the best solution may not be as simple as you want. To get a new reel seat and new cork over the butt of a tapered rod, you have to oversize their diameter and use what I consider excessive amounts of filler and epoxy when you glue them in their new, smaller diameter position on the blank. To avoid that, I have always removed rod guides until the new handle components will slide over the tip of the blank and down into position with a proper fit. Basically, it's like building a completely new rod - only you have to also strip the blank of many of its existing components without damaging the blank. Bottom line, it's not something I'd recommend trying unless your are into rod building anyway, or don't mind trashing the rod if you screw it up.

  13. So let's say you catch a huge 10 pound or whatever weight bass. You want to have it mounted. To put it bluntly how does the taxidermist kill the bass or do you have to kill it? In regards to the replica alternative how is this done? Bring a picture or something? I saw these two topics mentioned in another thread but there were no specifics on it. Thanks!!! Joe

  14. If you want to go into tight areas while on the water-that is exactly why you should not get a talon. They do not deploy down and out of the way when on the water but the power pole does. Also two talons do not work like two power pole because they are too close together, waste of money it does not work very well at all. But two power-poles work well at holding sideways in the wind because they create a wide footprint. Also about the cost- beside better performance and features the sportsman II is less expensive than the talon. The talon retails for 1450 and the sportsman II is 1195 and you don’t have to spend another 169 for the tilting bracket. The power pole adapter plates are also less expensive and come with a powder coated finish not just the plain anodized aluminum169.00 verses 225.00. So when you add it all up you'll sill spend a lot more for the less effective talon than you would for the real thing.

  15. I caught my PB on a Mojo Rig. It is dynamite in grass. Sometimes I just don't feel like spending all that time to rig it up so I found a fast way of accomplishing the same thing. I just tie the hook on the main line and then grab what is called a Water Gremlin Bullshot weight and pinch it on. Water Gremlin Bullshot sinkers are bullet weight splitshots that come through the grass a little better than the mojo weights you buy at the store.

  16. Drop shot, with the bail open as the boater speeds off with the TM on max power. Count to 30, close bail, reel in fish. You wouldn't believe how many I've caught like that. Boring, but deadly.

  17. Shimano is having a $30 rebate on their Chronarchs and Curados, so those would be my top two choices. If you pay retail for the reel the post rebate price would be $170 for the Chronarch and $130 for the Curado. Both are great reels at that price point and will keep you happy for years and years.

  19. if its skin, if you can get it there that day or at least the next day the latest, wrap the fish in a wet towel and then sit it into a cooler full of water and ice.. you do not want the fish to be in direct contact with ice thats why you wrap it in a towel, the ice will burn the skin. if your not getting it there sooner than later. wrap it in a towel, soak the towel full of water then put it into a trash bag add a little extra water in there and into the freezer she goes.. bring it to the taxidermist frozen in the towel as it is and its his job from there. after you catch the fish be gentle, yea he is dead or going to be yea but he will still bruise and etc.. don't let him bang around the boat, don't beat his head in with a club to kill him, don't gut him out. don't do that stuff..

  21. A question like this is hard to answer as there are no real grading systems from one blank manufacturer to the other on power and action. to answer your question on this specific blank move your hand position up the rod 3 inches to get the feel of it. I do not believe that you are going to make the rod a moderate by cutting 3 inches you may see a little bit of a difference. It will be minor when it comes to action I would believe. You will probably see a bigger difference in the power but even that will be slight with only 3 inches. By trimming the butt you will see the power drop more towards a medium light (not saying it will be a medium light) if you were to trim the tip you would be moving more towards the heavy side. Now again let me restate that it is all relative on the maker and construction of the blank. My question is if it is a high end rod becareful as any modification to the rod or blank will probably void any warranty. I would be intererested to hear what Deleware Tackle would have to say on this subject.

  22. To sum it up, your cuttin the backbone, not the top, so action won't be affected but the length the backbone can pull on will take more load

  23. If you do it in the privacy of your own home and the bass is consensual... If it was legaly caught you are entitled to do whatever you want with it. Go ahead and eat it or bury it in the garden. Don't let anybody make you feel guilty. Hunters don't get replicas of animals they have killed. There's that goofy show on tv, the name escapes me, where people have their dead pets mounted. I have a 7lber skin mount on my wall as well as some other species of fish. If, in the future I get an 8 or a 9 I may just take pics and do a replica. If I get a double digit, who knows.

  24. I'll second Brian's reply. Distance will come in time. Try to be patient, trust me, I know that's a tough one! As I had mentioned in a previous post, practice as much as you can, whether that's on the water or at home. I'm not familiar with your reel, not sure if it has any internal braking system or not. If it does, then as you get more comfortable with the reel and remain backlash free keep, you can back off the braking which will give you more distance. When I first started, I was told to adjust to line tension knob so that you have to move the rod some to get the bait to move. Then make smooth casts, not getting the rod to load up, until I was comfortable and not getting backlashes. After I was comfortable, that's when I backed off the line tension slightly so the bait dropped every so slightly and continue practicing. Keep making the adjustments with the line tension until the bait would basically "free fall" with no tension at all. Hope this helps! If you have any questions, let me know and I'll help out the best I can!

  26. Good luck Bill. Here's a belated 3/23 report: Sorry that I’m late getting this out. Mark and I met up at our secret spot only to find two other anglers working it. They were fishing ultralight tackle mostly using in-line spinners. They said that they each caught about 15 bass with the biggest at 16”. When I arrived, my buddy Mark had already caught several bass on plastic worms. I noticed that the water was up a little bit, which was nice to see. There was a lot of scum on the water’s surface. I guess it had turned over. The fish didn’t seem to mind. I caught this well fed fat 14” largemouth on a chatterbait on my first cast before catching up to Mark. I caught this next fish on the very next cast, followed by a backlash that cost me 10 minutes of valuable fishing time. These 14” fish seemed to be about my average on the evening. Mark with a chunky largemouth caught on a plastic worm. Mark had to leave soon after that, but the fish and I stayed until dark. Here’s another of those average ones: I really liked the colors of these fish. I finished the evening catching a small largemouth on a buzzbait. That was the first bass that I’ve ever landed on a buzzbait in Maryland in March. What incredibly good fishing weather we’ve had this early spring. I finished with 13 fat bass all around 13-15” on my favorite chatterbait (gold with white skirt, white ringworm trailer), and one dink on a buzzer. After catching several bass, I started getting a lot of hits but missing them. I added a trailer hook and that helped my hooking percentage quite a bit. Unfortunately, the trailer hook, making the lure not quite as weedless, caught a log making my cast about 1” too long from being perfect, and I lost my favorite chatterbait. Those Z-Man chatterbaits really get a lot of attention, but I’m not really happy with their hooks. I find them difficult to sharpen and keep sharp, and they’re dull right out of the package. I’ll be checking other brands to see if their hooks are any better. I’ve caught a lot of bass, and big ones, on that lure over the past several years, but that hook issue is their one drawback. Anyone have recommendations of one of these style lures with premium sharp hooks? The bass seemed really aggressive. I love the reaction bite, so that’s all I tried. I think that if I had fished a worm, my numbers would have been much better, especially if I had followed up my misses with the worm. I’ll admit it, I was lazy. If the fish hit and I saw that it wasn’t a big one, I moved on looking for the big bass. Picky, picky, picky… I didn't get any big bass. I know that these fish pictured in this post aren't all that big, but pictures help tell the story and they're much more pleasing to the eye than just text. My next trip out will be Friday morning Upper Tidal Potomac. We’ll test the waters for stripers and fish for bass if we don’t locate the rock.

  27. As long as you can pass your leader and connecting knots, a rod with "micro" guides can used for anywhere you'ld use the rod otherwise. Ice up and filimentous algae are other situations where they may not be ideal. As for durability, if you regularly step on your rods it probably doesn't matter what guides you use.lol The best guide choice for any rod is the smallest, lightest one that will do the job.

  28. I have been using Yo Zuri 6 through 20 on spinning and baitcast for over two years. The 20 is somewhat stiff but not bad at all. The 6 and 8 on my spinning reels has been outstanding. I have experienced zero twist or coiling issues that is caused by the line. I fished a whole season with the same line on my tube rod. No issues. I can't explain why you have problems. I don't need a refund. I'm more than satisfied. My reels are Shimano Saros 3000 if that's a help. I always close the bail mannually.

  29. Spider Grubs are one of my top 3 river smallmouth baits. When i first discovered how smallmouth reacted to them i became an addict very quickly. Needless to say i stocked up heavily, and agree the best action i've seen so far is the GYCB version. But if RAGE came out with one.....ohhhhhh baby. just sayin

  30. Series 3 or 5 can't remember, strike king 6-9 foot diving green gizzard shad color. I was catching my bass in 8-9 foot of of water. I would crank it down till I made contact with the bottom. As soon as I felt bottom I would slow my retrieve down as slow as I could and keep contact with the bottom, all of a sudden the rod would load up and I thought "dang I'm stuck".... then you could feel the head shakes!
