bama_bassin Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 On a lake with lots of grass and shad as primary food source. Quote
tholmes Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 I'd use the same lures that you use on cloudy, breezy days. It ain't raining where the fish are Lipless cranks or spinnerbaits (in shad-like colors) run over the top of the grass would be where I would start. Tom Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 22, 2012 Global Moderator Posted March 22, 2012 I like topwaters (particularly buzzbaits) in light to moderate rain. If it gets heavy I switch to a wakebait, spinnerbait or swimjig. The rain breaks up the surface and makes them less spooky so fast moving baits seems to really appeal to them. Quote
Shane Procell Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Fishing in the rain can be incredible and I love it. If its raining and overcast I'll throw a frog for starters unless its cold. If they won't take a frog then I'll throw a spinnerbait. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 I fish durning rainstorms all the time, especially in my kayak. I reccomend you get a STORM kicking minnow with a color that matches the baitfish in your area, and shad colored spinnerbaits, sexy shad works best. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted March 24, 2012 Super User Posted March 24, 2012 Spinnerbait just under the surface and bulged. Wake baits. I have had pretty decent luck on a large propbait like a wounded spook. i also like large black worms swam through the junk. Quote
Floridalargemouth Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 I typically fish whatever I'm throwing when its not raining. I've never really noticed a difference in the number of strikes I get in the rain or out. The same pattern should work just as well. Capt. Dalton Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 whatever they are fishing on tv too many people are struck by lightning Quote

J_Pearson Posted March 26, 2012 Posted March 26, 2012 whatever they are fishing on tv too many people are struck by lightning It can pour like a maniac and not lightning once. I burn a big spinnerbait, wake a swimbait, or walk a spook, depending on the time of year. I absolutely love fishing in the rain. Quote

This is the first recommendation for this swimbait...I bought a few and was VERY disappointed; it kept rolling on me. Try a black spinnerbait with gold colorado blades Quote
Super User bigbill Posted March 26, 2012 Super User Posted March 26, 2012 I am a light rain fishing freak. I like fishing during the fronts. We do leave the water when a micro burst is comming our way. My hottest lures have been so far using inline spinners during the rain, inbetween the rain showers when it stops and right before the front hits, about 2hrs before the rain starts. 1/4oz bass size Joes Flies in fire tiger apache Joes Flies in glo tiger Joes Flies in blackgnat silver blade Strike King silver blade with black tail #3 size Mepps anglia silver blade, brown tail #3 silver blade, grey tail #3 red/whire/silver blade / brown tail #3 Hank Parker on TV once showed me how good the mann's baby 1 in brown crawdad can be in the light rain too. I found it works all the time in some cases. I try a swimbait all the time like the YUM one thats 6'' long in white. They seem to attack it and try to rip it off my line but no hook ups yet. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 26, 2012 Super User Posted March 26, 2012 I can't believe nobody has mentioned a Chatterbait. Killer in the rain with a Baby Craw trailer. 1 Quote
hbird Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Ive actually fished a topwater Trick worm and just walk the dog across the top. Something Very bright like yellow or white. I caught about 6 in a 1 hour period on this method from the bank. 1 Quote
A-Rob Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Spinnerbait or crank for me in those situations...more b/c its dark/cloudy when its raining, and often a bit of chop on the water Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Really? This is the first recommendation for this swimbait...I bought a few and was VERY disappointed; it kept rolling on me. Try a black spinnerbait with gold colorado blades yes sir! what you have to do is use light tackle, 8 - 9 pound flouro, and a fast action rod. Works beautifully. Buy the one with the plastic lip, the one that's lipless sucks. Let it sink and jerk retrieve. Try putting a small splitshot about your knot. I caught my PB on an 8" kicking minnow last year. Quote
buzzfrog Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 if warm in summer buzzbait, seems all my big buzz hits are before the rain and during on a buzzbait Quote
MN_SONNEN_ANGLER Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Not sure if it has been mentioned but i agree with the faster reaction baits in rain, the RAT-L-TRAP by bill lewis lures is an awesome lure for ripping over or through weeds. i like the 3/4 oz with 20lb mono line and a med hvy fast tip rod to get good power, if ripping through the weeds or not i like that set up best for the RAT-L-TRAP. Super User bigbill Posted March 30, 2012 Super User Posted March 30, 2012 Standing in one spot during the light rain i caught 19 bass with a joes fly firetiger apache 1/4oz bass size inline spinner. I also caught some pink color looking pan fish too. They looked like pink / white sunfish. Sometime during the front, when the front is approaching or when the heavy rain slows down to a lull i can't seem to get a handle when the frenzy will start but i find it to be non stop action fish after fish no matter were i cast i catch fish. I think they would bite a bare hook too. Quote
POPRG Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 One of my best number days was fishing a wicked downpour columbus day weekend a couple years ago...set up near the lake dam/spillway and it was runnin real hard creating a solid current dead center of the spillway..these fish would just stem the current and slam anything you threw at em. started w/ a jig, went to a spinner bait and ended up using a super spook for some insane topwater action. Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted March 31, 2012 Super User Posted March 31, 2012 I would throw a rage tail shad in shad colors, along with a buzzbait or propbait. Spinnerbaits are great in a light drizzle if the topwaters aren't working. Quote
jkarol24 Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Before I talk about baits, it important to first explain the location of the bass. The rain begins and runoff starts to occur. This runoff is carrying little insects and yummy morsels from land into the water for baitfish to eat (shad in your case). Further, this rain will also add a tint of color to the water, further pulling in bait to the banks or in the grass. Even more, this runoff will warm the near-shore waters, again attracting shad. Now the bass arent dumb, you can bet they will be close behind those shad looking for an easy meal. So I would be trying to mimick the shad, whether it be a spinnerbait, shallow crank, or a buzzbait. A fast moving silver frog over the grass would also do the trick. Mimick the shad in shallow areas and you will find the bass ready to eat. Quote
